ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A FOSTER OR ADOPTIVE PARENT?
The Department of Community Based Services is in search of caring adults interested in fostering and/or adopting children (ages birth to 18yrs old). The need for foster and adoptive parents is great in our area. On average, Clay County has around 70 to 80 children in foster care. Although this number changes daily, the need for good homes in our county is a never-ending necessity. Clay County currently has only thirteen approved foster homes and our children need homes within their own county to help care for them in their time of need.
If you think you may be interested in becoming a foster or adoptive parent, please contact me or attend the informational meeting scheduled for more information.
Clay County Foster/Adoptive Parent Informational Meeting will be held at the Clay County Protection & Permanency Office on April 23, 2009 at 6 pm.
(The next set of PSMAPP training sessions will begin on April 28, 2009 and will be held in London.)
Please attend the Informational meeting or contact me at the below phone number or email address for more information or different meeting dates:

Heart and Soul Life Center
Manchester's first pregnancy help center plans to be open by the 1st week in June. It's time to start talking about our Earn While You Learn Program (EWYL) and begin to fill our store room. Have you ever looked at a pregnant teenager and wondered how she was going to meet the physical and emotional needs of a child? No teenager, no matter how mature, can understand the demands of a child. We at Heart and Soul Life Center know this all too well; and we are doing something about it.
We are in the process of instituting a nationally acclaimed program called Earn While You Learn (EWYL). Expectant and young mothers can “earn” baby clothes, furniture, maternity clothes, and many other necessities by learning. The program pairs a young woman or man with a trained volunteer who meets with her every week through individual or group sessions. Every lesson earns her $5.00 in “Mommy Money.” Completed homework earns another $3.00. She can also earn money by keeping doctor appts, WIC appts, HANDS appts, or other social service appts which help ensure she will have a healthier pregnancy and baby. This money can be spent in our Baby Store. The price of baby clothes run from 0.25 for bibs, 1.00 for a dozen diapers, 1.00-2.00 for an outfit or 30.00 for bigger baby furniture. We know that this program can have a positive impact on the lives of young mothers and a lifelong impact on their children. Our program will help break cycles of neglect and abuse. The one great need we have now is to build our curriculum and our inventory for the baby store. It takes a considerable amount of material to be able to offer a lesson once a week during pregnancy and the year afterward.
We are asking civic-minded businesses, parents, and concerned citizens like you to help underwrite this vital program. We hope to implement this program as soon as the center opens in June but to do this we need your help. Your contribution will make a difference in countless children’s lives. How you can help:
• Donate household items and adult clothing to our May 30th Community Yard Sale. Items are needed by May 29th. All items donated can be tax deductible if needed. Please specify if need a tax receipt.
• Donate new or gently used baby clothes (up to age 12 mths), toddler clothes (for big brothers and sisters), baby furniture, diapers, formula (Carnation Good Start), and maternity clothes to Heart and Soul's Baby Store for the Earn While You Learn Program. Items are needed by June 1st. After June 1st Baby Store donations will be accepted on the first Monday of each month.
• We need 40 people to become our partner by giving a one time donation of $100. All donations are tax deductible. Please make checks payable to Heart and Soul Life Center. Businesses will be given Heart and Soul Life Center "We support Family Life" counter displays. Individuals will be displayed on our "Family Tree" inside the center.
To help us make a difference please contact Tina Carnahan, center director at 598-1489 or 813-6094.
