Campbell claims regional title

Raleigh Campbell claimed a regional championship in the Shot Put during the first night of the Class AAA track meet at Pulaski Southwestern Tuesday night. J.D. Mills and Wes Smith also qualified for the state track meet with second place finishes. Mills finished second in the Shot Put and Smith finished second in the High Jump.

Shanda Copeland finished 4th and Whitney Jackson placed 5th in the Discus to score for the girls team. Dustin Smith finished 8th in the Triple Jump, Brittany Collins finished 9th and Morgan Mills finished 11th in the Long Jump. C.J. Miller placed 12th in the High Jump.

Five Clay County runners qualified for the finals Thursday night with top eighth finishes in the prelims. Morgan Jackson placed 6th in the 400, Tiffany Smith was 6th in the 100 hurdles and 3rd in the 300 hurdles, J.V. Hooker placed 6th in the 100, Jeremy Garrison placed 2nd in the 400 and Cameron Rice was 6th in the 200 and 2nd in the 300 hurdles.

Justin Sanlin ran 15th in the 100 and 11th in the 200, Jeremy Sizemore was 12th in the 400, Brittany Collins was 10th in the 400, Maggie Sizemore was 15th in the 100 and 11th in the 200, Morgan Mills was 10th in the 100 and Natalie Morris was 13th in the 200.

The finals in all running events, relays and one half of the field events will be held Thursday. The top two finishers qualify for the state track meet.

Track: Jackson, Garrison and Campbell take Regional Championships

Three members of the Clay County track team won regional championships during the Class AAA meet at Pulaski Southwestern this week. Eighth grader Whitney Belle Jackson took the Shot Put title, sophmore Jeremy Garrison crossed the finish line first in the 400 meter run and senior Raleigh "Little Moe" Campbell won the boys Shot Put. All three will now compete in the state track meet June 1st and 2nd.

Campbell and five of his teammates will also complete in the state meet with second place finishes as Campbell took second in the Discus. Other second place finishers were: 8th grader Blake Smith in the High Jump; sophmore Shanda Copeland in the Shot Put; Juniors Cameron Rice in the 300 Meter Hurdles and Wes Smith in the High Jump, and senior J.D. Mills in the Shot Put.

Those who finished 3rd through 6th to score for the Track Tigers were: Tiffany Smith who took 3rd in the 300 hurdles and 6th in the 100 hurdles; J.D. Mills with 4th in the Discus; Shanda Copleland took 4th and Whitney finished 5th in the Discus; Morgan Jackson took 6th in the 400; Dustin Smith was 6th in the Long Jump and Tish Sizemore was 6th in the High Jump.

Two girls relays scored for the Tigers as the team of Tabitha Byrd, Mariah Owens, Angela smith and Kendra Wagers took 4th in the 4x400 and the team of Brittany Collins, Morgan Jackson, Mariah Owens and Tish Sizemore finished 6th in the 4x800.

Four boys relays scored as the 4x200 team of Raleigh Campbell, J.V. Hooker, Cameron Rice and Justin Sandlin took 3rd as did the 4x800 team of Jeremy Garrison, Matt Langdon, Jeremy Sizemore and Andrew Vaughn. The team of Jeremy Garrison, Matt Langdon, Cameron Rice and J.V. Hooker took 4th in the 4x400 while the 4x100 team of J.V. Hooker, C.J. Miller, Justin Sandlin and Dustin Smith took 5th.

In the team standings Clay County finished 4th in the Boys and 5th in the Girls. The host team Pulaski Southwestern won the Boys Regional Championship and North Laurel claimed the Girls title.
