Heart Language Bible Storying [South Asia] Christian workers, DYLAN and JESSICA VILMEK,* teach South Asians to share the gospel using Bible stories and also to make audio recordings of the stories so they can be shared with others in a particular language group. Many South Asians are literate but still find it hard to understand what they read. Their education level is low and their preferred learning style is oral. During one training event, the Vilmeks’ goal was to craft 200 Bible stories into a particular people group’s heart language. Your gifts through the Cooperative Program help provide the gospel in many languages so that people can understand the good news of Christ. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. The Hope of the Gospel (Nevada) BEN BARFIELD is no stranger to planting churches. Formerly the church planting catalyst for Tucson, Arizona, and the founding planter of Common Ground Church, he is now the Send City coordinator for the city of Las Vegas. Las Vegas is much more than the Strip and casinos. It is a sprawling western city devastated by the real estate bust and a struggling economy. Vegas needs the hope of the Gospel. Your gifts through the Cooperative Program help to bring the people of Las Vegas to Christ. Pray for more planters to come to Las Vegas and for established churches to partner with ministry in Las Vegas. The Need for Authenticity in Relationships (New Hampshire) DAVE and SHANNON TATE serve in New Hampshire ministering to students and helping churches evangelize Nashua through missions outreach. Dave has his work cut out for him. “There is so little Gospel influence in New England that, for many of my students, the only Christians they know and associate with are at our church,” Dave says. “I think the students sincerely want consistent love, truth and authentic relationships with adults and peers but they don’t necessarily care to search religion.” Your gifts through the Cooperative Program will help Dave and his church encourage people in New England to look past religion to the Savior they so desperately need. Offer Grace and Peace to the Community (New York) CHRISTY DYER is part of a church planting team in Long Island City, New York. Her church, New City Church, seeks to offer grace and peace to the community. The population in the area is growing and estimates predict at least 100,000 will live in this 3-mile area in the next few years. As the population grows so does the need for evangelical churches. Most New Yorkers do not have a relationship with Christ, and even if they wanted to attend church on Sunday there are not many options. Your Cooperative Program dollars will help plant these much-needed churches. Pray God will open doors to relationships with people living and working in Long Island City. Surrendering to God’s Call (Wyoming) ELIAS MONTALVO is a native of Quito, Ecuador. As a child, he thought his status as a pastor’s son was his ticket into heaven. When he was eight—at a Royal Ambassadors camp in Quito— he learned he was wrong. He asked Jesus to forgive his sins and live in his heart. Years later Elias strayed from his faith but finally surrendered to God’s call to be the pastor he denied he would ever be. Now he is the Hispanic church planting specialist for the state of Wyoming. As you give through the Cooperative Program you are helping him lead Hispanic churches to catch the vision to plant many much-needed Hispanic churches in Wyoming. Join Elias in praying for the vision to become reality. Reaching Hurting People (Lebanon) DON ALAN*, a Christian worker living in the region, said that in Lebanon, Syrian refugees live everywhere and anywhere—in places that people in the West would condemn and places “that you would never imagine anyone living.” Christian workers are determining new strategies with hopes of reaching hurting people. They are partnering with local congregations to provide relief and to share the Gospel with them. “So many of them don’t know the deeper need they have for a Savior, but it shows on their faces as they deal with the hardships that life has put before them,” Don said. The Cooperative Program is making a difference among Syrian refugees. God Placed Students Where They Needed to Be (Slovakia) Baptist representatives TREY and ELISE ATKINS continue to be amazed and thankful for the college students God is placing in their lives. God, in His sovereign plan, has enabled Trey and Elise to meet students near the trash-bag section in Tesco while on a broken-down train or through other colleagues or friends with whom they have made connections in life. Gifts through the Cooperative Program support Trey and Elise and provide opportunities for both of them to share the Gospel and their love for the Lord boldly and sensitively with these college students in Bratislava, Slovakia. Prayer for the Children (Oregon) CLAY HOLCOMB was called into ministry during his college years. His passion for communicating God’s Word and seeing young people raised up to follow Jesus led him into student ministry. His first ministry position was in a church plant, which gave him a love for church planting. He is NAMB’s Send City coordinator for Portland and feels privileged to lead other planters to explore Portland and church planting in the context of the West coast. Your gifts through the Cooperative Program are helping Clay lead and coach church planters. Clay asks for prayer for his four children who are now living in a city that is very challenging to their young faith. The Message of Hope and Love (Puerto Rico) FREDDY VALCARCEL had a thriving ministry among Hispanics in Clarksville, Tennessee, but he sensed God calling him to something different. After much prayer, Freddy and his family accepted the challenge to plant a church in Puerto Rico among a people broken by legalism and hopelessness. Of the 130,000 people in Caguas, nearly 80 percent are divorced and 95 percent are single parents. Freddy knows the message of God’s hope and love is the only thing that can heal the broken families and communities in his city. Ministering to the Displaced (Armenia) Locking the door, Ani* turned to leave her home. She thought she would return in six months. Instead, her life has been plagued with visions of dead bodies and war. Loss of job, home and security has caused sleepless nights, fear and sickness. Twelve thousand forcibly displaced Syrian-Armenians now live in Armenia. Christian workers love and minister to the displaced by conducting camps, medical clinics and feeding projects. Burdened by God’s Command (Washington) DANIEL SON has been serving Christ in the ministry for the past 12 years. Life-Giving Churches [Massachusetts] DAVID and GAYLE BUTLER serve as Send City missionaries in Boston. David works to implement a church planting strategy for the city and helps mobilize churches to support the vision of planting 100 life-giving churches in every neighborhood in and around Boston by 2020. Though Boston has earned the reputation for being a world-class city, it was recently ranked as the 91st least “Bible-minded” city in the U.S. There’s no escaping the huge opportunity in this gospel-needy city. Many simply don’t know what it means to be a Christ-follower. You can partner in these efforts by lifting up in prayer those working there and by giving generously through the Cooperative Program. Spiritual Conversations [Poland] IMB missionary TED HOLMES tells of a Pinglish (Polish- English) camp where 70 youth experienced daily Bible study, English classes, worship and community. Toward the end of the week, spiritual conversations were lasting long into the evening. Seventeen youth made commitments to follow Christ. Family Hospitality [Central Asia] Because JUSTIN and SUE KAISE* often have guests in their home, much of their ministry is hospitality. In one year they had 270 nights of overnight guests. They also invite many Muslim friends and business relationships over for dinner. The Kaises strive to do ministry together as a family. Mirroring the Early Church [Southeast Asia] After teaching English classes, JEFF and KIM CRUSE often invite students to their home. They build relationships with them and share the gospel. One day, when one of their students was asked where he went to church, he answered “JKH.” It stood for Jeff and Kim’s house. During one Bible study, the Cruses read Acts 2 and asked the students if the group at their home resembled the early church. “Wow, we are a church!” said the students. Today, a second church has been planted and the students are actively involved in missions. Cooperative Program gifts help the Cruses plant churches among students. Serving to Build Trust [New Jersey] TIM and ROBIN NUSSBAUMER have been in New Jersey for more than 10 years planting gospel-centered churches. One of Tim’s goals from the beginning has been to partner with local school systems. One elementary school allowed the church to rent school facilities on Sundays, but it still took time to build trust between them and the church. To build this trust, the church cancelled a morning service to instead clean the school and do landscaping. Eventually, this relationship led to a tutoring and ESL class for the families of students. Pray for more church planters to have a heart for the Northeast and support them by giving through the Cooperative Program.
