Missionary Moment Jacob and Jessica Dahl ELLENSBURG, WASHINGTON Today we're going to pray for two of our collegiate missionaries who serve in Washington State. They are our missionaries because our church supports them through our Cooperative Program giving. Jacob and Jessica Dahl (say like DOLL) serve in Ellensburg, which is a university town less than a two-hour drive southeast of Seattle. Our missionaries are campus ministers who are working to reach the some 12,000 students who study on the 380-acre campus of Central Washington University. It's a big mission field when you consider that only about one in 10 students is a Christian. Washington State needs new churches, but the liberal/secular mindset in the state makes outreach slow. The busiest time for Jacob and Jessica is in the fall when nearly 2,500 new students arrive to start their studies. They go all out to make early contact with the students before they settle into a church-free routine for the year. Let's pray for Jacob and Jessica and their very challenging ministry. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Royal Ambassador Grows up to Plant a Church in Virginia Virginia As a Royal Ambassador, KENNY BRITTON grew up with an understanding of the significance of missions. Kenny had never considered becoming a church planter until leaders at the church where he was serving as a children’s pastor asked him to lead a new church planting endeavor. Throughout 2015, Kenny laid the groundwork for the new church in Prince William County, Va., by gathering a core team. Your gifts given through the Cooperative Program help to provide for Kenny’s family as he tells people about Jesus. Pray that Kenny and his team will continue to grow spiritually as they serve Jesus. Syrian Refugees Depending on God in Difficulty Central Asia After months of Bible studies with Christian workers DAVE and CAROL BRANSON*, seven Syrian refugees made the decision to follow Christ. The new believers reached out to other refugees and met seven other families who also wanted to study the Bible. The group is now learning to pray and depend on God through the difficulties they face. Their employers demand long hours and cheat them of their wages. Local school children hit and ostracize the refugee children. But through the Cooperative Program, hurting people are receiving hope. The women told Carol they rejoice as refugees because through those trials they found the truth. Squashing Fear in Hungary Europe SAMANTHA is a volunteer in Hungary with Hands On, an IMB program that helps young adults spend a semester on the mission field. After the Brussels terrorist attack, her friend Petra said she was scared the terrorists also would come to Hungary. Samantha said sometimes she is scared, too, but she shared that Jesus is victorious so Christians don’t have to worry because their hope is secure in Christ. Petra said she also wanted a relationship with Jesus. Samantha shared the gospel with Petra and a few days later, she accepted Christ. Praise God that your gifts through the Cooperative Program sent Samantha to share with this new believer. Ministry to Gypsy Children Europe IMB worker JACKIE LEWIS* works with gypsy kids from the slums, orphanages and those she sees digging through dumpsters. She shares Bible stories with them and loves seeing them uncover something new in Scripture. Jackie also feels burdened to meet families—to sit in their homes and talk about family, culture and Bible stories. God responded to that burden with Andre and his wife, Stanka. As she got to know this family, she learned about their passion to reach their people with the gospel. Pray God uses gifts through the Cooperative Program to help Jackie teach this couple about the Great Commission and how God uses the least expected people for His glory. Helping Ohio Baptists Engage in Gospel Conversations Ohio JACK HELTON knows firsthand the power of the gospel to transform a life. He had a troubled home life when he came to faith in Jesus. Today, as the state director of evangelism for Ohio, he helps Ohio Southern Baptist churches proclaim that gospel. He helps pastors throughout their state understand their communities so they can better engage them in gospel conversations. Your gifts given through the Cooperative Program help Jack travel to churches so he can mentor and support the evangelistic work of Ohio churches. Pray that God would help Ohio Baptists reach the 11.5 million non-Christians in the state. Use Your Talents to Share Christ Europe IMB worker RUSTY FORD had been ministering to Raul’s family for years when Raul’s uncle shared that Raul was struggling with drugs. Rusty took Raul to a Christian rehab center for treatment, counseling and prayers. During his treatment, Raul accepted Jesus, followed by his twin brother, Jorge. The brothers are kickboxing champions and wanted to use their passion for boxing to reach others, so Rusty helped them start kickboxing classes at a church. Through the class, they have shared the gospel with more than 50 guys, and many have decided to follow Christ and stop using drugs. Praise God that gifts through the Cooperative Program enable Rusty to disciple these brothers as they share with others. Missionary Moment Joe and Judy Bowman FORT MORGAN, COLORADO We're heading out to the American West today as we pray for two of our missionaries named Joe and Judy Bowman. They have started a new church in Fort Morgan, Colorado, called The Mission. Fort Morgan is a farming community in the flat part of the state, northeast of Denver. Farm and factory work in the area has drawn people from Central America, South America and Somalia. Joe says many people there think they are Christians but have no relationship with Jesus Christ. He loves seeing people begin attending church and growing in their Christian faith. Our church is supporting Joe and Judy in their ministry in Colorado through our Cooperative Program giving. Let's pray now that their church will grow and that many will come to faith in Jesus Christ, becoming growing disciples for Him. Missionary Moment Jamie and Rachael Reynolds HAZARD, KENTUCKY Today we're going to visit the hills of eastern Kentucky because that's where two of our missionaries serve. They are Jamie and Rachael Reynolds who direct the work of the Three Forks Baptist Association. It's a fellowship of more than three dozen churches, but they are mostly small and spread over a big area. That's why Jamie and Rachael welcome teams of Southern Baptist volunteers to come help them minister to the people in and around Hazard, where there is much poverty and many kinds of social problems like alcoholism and drugs. Since many people do not have a personal relationship with Christ, it means there are spiritual problems as well. These are conditions found all over the Appalachian region, and it's why thousands of Baptist volunteers are needed. We are helping support Jamie and Rachael in their ministry there in Kentucky through our Cooperative Program giving. Let's pray for them now. Missionary Moment Kambiz & Sepideh Saghaey SOUTHEASTERN BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY There was a man in Central Asia named Kambiz Saghaey (say kahm-BEEZ sop-AWE- ee), who once worked to stop a church there from telling people about Jesus, just as Saul did in New Testament times. In fact, for nine months he tried to shut that church up. But the church stood firm. Eventually Kambiz began doubting his Muslim faith. He asked God to show him the truth. A voice told him that Jesus Christ is the truth. In that moment, Kambiz became a follower of Jesus. Now he equips people to share their faith, just as the apostle Paul did. And that church he tried to stop? He became its pastor! Kambiz survived prison and certain death in Central Asia and eventually he and his wife came to the U.S. Now he is studying and serving as coordinator of the Persian Leadership Development program at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina, offering help to Farsi-speakers. Southeastern is one of the six Southern Baptist seminaries we support through our Cooperative Program giving. Today, let's thank God for guiding Kambiz and preserving his life. Let's pray that his ministry to Farsi-speaking people will have results far and wide just as Paul's ministry did!
