Zach Lewis, Morehead State Football Spring Game Set For April 29 Morehead State Press Release
MOREHEAD, Ky.—Morehead State football will begin its spring practice session Thursday evening at Jayne Stadium. The Eagles are hoping to build off late-season momentum with the intent of competing for a Pioneer Football League championship.
The practice period will last for three weeks, most of the month of April, before culminating in the annual MSU spring football game. That game will be played Friday, April 29, at 6:00 pm at Jayne Stadium.
Despite the momentum from the end of the 2010 season, when the Eagles finished 5-6 and closed out the year on a two-game winning streak, Morehead State coach Matt Ballard notes that the start of spring practice is always about reinforcing fundamentals.
“It’s been a long time since November. When you start out spring practice you’ve got to start with ‘back to square one,’” Ballard said. “It’s simple, it’s basic. The basic bottom line, on both sides of the ball, we’ve got to be sound fundamentally, in technique and we’ve got to execute.”
Ballard doesn’t expect any scheme changes, which is expected given the core of the team he has returning. On the defensive side of the ball, Ballard will lean heavily on both the leadership and on-field play of defensive lineman Jerome Raymond and Mark Hall.
“Mark Hall and Jerome Raymond have set the standard and what they have done speaks for themselves. I feel like they’ve led the pack with the way they’ve led in the weight room,” Ballard said. “With everything they do, with their leadership skills, they just raise the entire level of play of our football team.”
The MSU offense will again be under the direction of quarterback Zach Lewis, who has a year and a half under his belt as the starter. Lewis will have multiple experienced weapons in backs like Ronnie McDermott and Desmond Cox and receivers Donte Sawyer and Jaison Yoshimura.
“Zach Lewis is our ring leader and it’s really important for him to take that next step in his development,” Ballard said. “He has really bought into his development in the weight room this winter. Offensively we have to be more efficient and we have to execute.”
Morehead State opens the 2011 season at home with a Thursday night game against nearby Kentucky Christian University.

May 19, 2011 Tigers first, Lady Tigers fifth in Fear Les Diamond Ratings Les Dixon: Times-Tribune Sports Editor
Boys Top 5 1. Clay County Tigers (23-5) I know I keep saying this, but the Tigers just keep winning against regional foes. They are now 12-0 against 13th Region competition and winners of 17 straight overall against 13th Region competition. Their last loss? Try an 8-7 decision to Williamsburg on May 19, 2010. The Tigers survived a 9-7 scare from Williamsburg just a week ago. 2. North Laurel Jaguars (13-13) The return of Marcus Carson will make a world of difference for the struggling Jaguars. North Laurel has lost three games in a row, but look for things to change with Carson back in the lineup. 3. Knox Central Panthers (13-9) 4. Corbin Redhounds (14-18) 5. South Laurel Cardinals (12-16) Girls Top 5 1. North Laurel Lady Jaguars (17-11) 2. South Laurel Lady Cardinals (17-8) 3. Whitley County Lady Colonels (15-13) 4. Corbin Lady Redhounds (11-17) 5. Clay County Lady Tigers (22-4) The Lady Tigers saw their 12-game win streak come to an end after dropping a 9-4 decision to Corbin. The Sentinel-Echo Tigers edge North Laurel to claim 13th Region title By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — MANCHESTER — Brandon Griffin’s two-out single scored Corey Corum with the winning run as Clay County retained the 13th Region title with an 11-10 win. The Jaguars gave themselves a very good chance with a quick start and maintained a lead until Clay County struck for four runs in the fourth inning. The Jaguars had chances late, but left six runners stranded in the last two innings Clay County’s winning rally began with Brooks issuing a walk to Tyler Young. Corum tried to move the runner with a bunt, but Brooks fired to second for the force out. A stolen base and fly ball moved Corum to third with two outs. It was then that Brandon Griffin jumped on the first pitch to drive in the game-winner. Read the entire article at: www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x2051366072/Clay-again-finds-a-way-to-win

Now that Kenny Roark has been name the head football coach at Clay County the big question for Tiger fans is >> Who is Kenny Roark? He had 16 straight winning seasons at Middlesboro, highlighted by the Class A State Championship in 1998 before his first losing season in 2009. herald-leader.com State baseball tourney up next for State Am golfer from Clay County By Mike Fields
Todd McDaniel
Clay County senior pitcher Todd McDaniel might be on the mound against St. Xavier in the Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark on Monday. If so, McDaniel won't feel the heat of competition any more than when he played in the Appalachian Wireless Kentucky State Amateur golf championship at Kearney Hill Links this week. Staring down a clean-up batter or a birdie putt is all about focus and confidence. McDaniel, who will play college golf at Kentucky, has straddled the two sports the last two years. McDaniel, who only pitches for the Tigers, is 14-6 over the last two seasons. He set a boys' state record by playing in six state golf tournaments, and he's been in the last two state baseball tournaments. courier-journal.com Matt Spalding, St. X crush Clay County 4-0 in state tournament Righty strikes out 5, drives in 4
LEXINGTON, Ky. — St. X jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and finished with 12 hits in a 10-0 victory over Clay County in the first round of the Kentucky National Insurance State Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. No. 18 Clay County (28-7) entered with the gaudy offensive numbers — .417 team batting average and 10.9 runs per game. But St. X (.285 batting average, 5.3 runs per game) was the team that lit up the scoreboard. St. X (27-10) advanced to face No. 23 Warren East (29-12) in Wednesday's 6 p.m. quarterfinal. Warren East beat Letcher County Central 6-2 earlier Monday. Senior Matt Spalding, a Western Kentucky University signee, was the star on the mound and at the plate for St. X on Monday. Spalding (7-4) allowed two hits and struck out five in five innings and went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and four RBIs. herald-leader.com State baseball: St. Xavier mercy-rules Clay County By Mike Fields
No. 2 St. X got terrific pitching and terrific hitting in a 10-0 mercy-rule rout of No. 22 Clay County in the first round of the Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State Tournament Monday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Matt Spalding starred on the mound and at the plate. The senior right-hander, who signed with Western Kentucky last fall and was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round last week, threw a five-inning three-hitter, striking out five and walking none. Clay County senior catcher John Wilson, who has signed with Eastern Kentucky, looked comfortable competing against St. X. He stroked a double off the left-field fence and displayed a strong arm behind the plate. Last year, Clay County lost to eventual champ Harrison County in the first round of the state tournament. Clay County coach Jason Smith said St. X has the same look: "In my opinion, they have a great opportunity to win a state championship." The Daily Independent Junior golfers tee off By Rocky Stanley
Tyler McDaniel
June 16 - ASHLAND, KENTUCKY - Red-hot Tyler McDaniel struck quickly before two weather delays in grabbing a two-shot lead after Wednesday's opening round of the Natural Resource Partners Bluegrass Junior. The 15-year-old from Manchester, Ky., had one of the earliest tee times (7:48 a.m.) and put up a 4-under-par 66 at Bellefonte Country Club. McDaniel is on a roll to start his American Junior Golf Association career. In his first event last week, he shot rounds of 67, 68, 69 to win an AJGA Junior All-Star tournament in Ringgold, Ga., for age 12-15 players. The brother of University of Kentucky golf signee Todd McDaniel parred the first 10 holes, but wasn't satisfied. Tyler's score bettered the first-round 68 by his older brother last year. Todd went on to tie for fourth place with a 209 total. Read the entire article at: dailyindependent.com/localsports/x947029741/Junior-golfers-tee-off
