TheTimesTribune.com Clay County (9-10 softball) eliminates South London with 2-1 victory By John Henson
With South London ace Mackenzie Powenski on the mound, the Clay County All-Stars knew their margin for error was slim in the loser’s bracket finals Tuesday of the District 4 Tournament (ages 9-10) and they responded by making none in a 2-1 win. South London defeated Clay County 6-1 in a tournament matchup last week as Powenski pitched a one-hitter and Clay was unable to overcome six errors. Clay County advanced to a championship game matchup today at 6 p.m. against North Laurel, the only unbeaten team in the tournament field. Clay needs two wins over North to capture the district title and earn a State Tournament bid in the process. Clay’s Brianda Owens won the pitchers duel matchup against Powenski as she allowed only two hits while striking out six and walking three. Clay took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Shelby Phillips led off the game with a single. Powenski struck out the next two batters before Lauren Smith was safe on a fielder’s choice grounder. Owens was safe on an error to bring home Phillips. An error on a ball hit by Owens set up the game-winning hit, a two-out single up the middle by Carley Hoskins. wildcatworld.com Happy Birthday to Richie Farmer!
Richard Dwight “Richie” Farmer, Jr. was born August 25, 1969 in Manchester, Kentucky. Farmer was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Kentucky in 1988. He played for the University of Kentucky from 1988 to 1992, where he posted career averages of 7.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. Though he was never a star at Kentucky, Farmer - along with his fellow seniors Pelphrey, Sean Woods and Deron Feldhaus - had shown that, through hard work and dedication and faith, the sort of things folks in the Bluegrass hold in the highest regard, they could do what most observers thought was impossible: Win. On Senior Night, the school surprised Farmer and his classmates the media had dubbed “The Unforgettables” by raising their jerseys to the rafters alongside those of the most hallowed Kentucky names. Farmer, the boy who dreamed of suiting up for the Wildcats, was now forever enshrined among the program’s legends. A Republican, Farmer is currently serving his second consecutive term as agriculture commissioner and is ineligible for re-election at the expiration of his term in 2011. On September 1, 2010, Farmer announced he would run for lieutenant governor on aticket with President of the Kentucky Senate David L. Williams in the 2011 gubernatorial election. www.wildcatworld.com/?p=14630
