Oneida Baptist Upset bid comes up shortBy PAUL LUNSFORD - Staff WriterONEIDA - The Cumberland Lady Skins advanced to the quarterfinals of the 13th Region All "A" Classic, but it wasn't as easy as expected as they edged host Oneida Baptist 38-32. Cumberland coach John Bond blamed part of his team's problems on the fact that there was no school Monday. "I just never did like playing ball games on days when we had no school," he said. "They don't sleep or go to bed, they don't eat the right food and lay around all day. You come in here and play sluggish, play flat and play ragged. "I thought we did a good job handling the ball and work for a good shot in the latter part of the fourth quarter. I was pleased with that." Freshmen Kendra Russell and Heather Maggard paced the Lady Skins with nine points each. All of Russell's points came on 3-pointers. Maggard grabbed 11 boards as Cumberland outrebounded the Lady Mountaineers 35-24. Delrena Mosley led OBI with 11 rebounds. Eve Tanoe, a 5-4 senior guard, led Oneida Baptist with 14 points. Dognawit Moges scored 11. Cumberland defeated OBI 53-22 earlier this season. "We're really maturing and have started to play together as a squad," Oneida Baptist coach Marvin Leuschke said. "This team of Cumberland beat us by multiple points in the last game. "The girls have really worked hard to get ready for this game. They did a good job." Samantha Sexton completed a three-point play and Russell nailed a 3-pointer as the Lady Skins took a 10-8 advantage after quarter. Moges and Tanoe each completed three-point plays to lead Oneida in the opening period. Cumberland took a four-point lead early in the second quarter, but a pair of baskets by Tanoe tied the game at 12-12 with 2:58 remaining in the half. Stephanie Whitt and Tanoe each exchanged a free throw as the game was even at 13-13 at the break. The Lady Skins outscored Oneida 16-11 in the third quarter as Russell hit a pair of 3-pointers. Tanoe had six points for the Lady Mountaineers in the period. Maggard, Marisha Tinsley and Whitt each scored baskets as Cumberland took a 36-28 advantage with 4:51 to play. Oneida Baptist lost Zunilda Lynch and Mosley to fouls in the final four minutes as the Lady Skins claimed the victory. Lady Dragons overcome slow start to defeat OBIBy PAUL LUNSFORD - Staff WriterONEIDA - The Harlan Lady Dragons overcame poor shooting and a sloppy first-half performance to defeat host Oneida Baptist 69-39. The first half featured six lead changes and three ties with Harlan clinging to a two-point halftime lead. "We had turnovers against their press, and that was the difference in the ballgame," Oneida Baptist coach Marvin Leuschke said. "We turned the ball over seven or eight times in the third quarter. "Harlan has a good, tough team. They won the Class 'A' Tournament, and you have to be tough to do that." Hanan Argaw nailed a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter for the Lady Mountaineers, but baskets by Patton, Huff and Allison helped Harlan to pull away to a 55-32 advantage. Delrena Mosley led Oneida Baptist (1-11) with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Eve Tanoe scored 10. "I was real proud of the girls. They did a good job," added Leuschke. OBI Mountaineers upset Green Dragons in All 'A' quarterfinalsBy JARROD SHERMAN - Sports EditorONEIDA - It might only be January, but Dail Smith gave the Oneida Baptist Mountaineers a finish worthy of March on Tuesday. Smith, a senior forward, nailed a short baseline jumper at the buzzer to lift the Mountaineers to a 45-44 win over Harlan in the 13th Region All "A" Classic quarterfinals. "We were going to him," Oneida Baptist coach Kenneth Woods said. "He's a seasoned senior, and he's been around awhile. I knew he'd make a short-range jump shot." Harlan led by a point when OBI's John Hensley rebounded Robbie Curtis' missed free throw and called timeout with 17.4 seconds remaining. The Mountaineers set up a final play, but the Dragons had a foul to give, and they used it when John Smith fouled Shawn Arthur with 1.2 seconds remaining. The officials conferred and reset the clock to 2.9 seconds. Smith found himself open on the baseline to receive the inbounds pass and hit the game winner. Both teams shot just under 50 percent, but they combined for 40 turnovers, including 26 in the first half. "We had a lot of unforced turnovers," Woods said. "We start four underclassmen - we start a sophomore, an eighth-grader, a junior, a sophomore and a senior. We've got the potential to be really good if we take care of the ball, but we didn't." Oneida Baptist (7-9) will face Barbourville in Thursday's first semifinal matchup at 6 p.m at Harlan. The Tigers slipped past Pineville 69-67 in overtime Tuesday. "(This win) really helps us," Woods said. "We've been waiting for this win for a long time. We finally got it, and maybe we can start playing better basketball." OBI falls in overtimeBy JOHN HENSON, Managing EditorRescued from a potentially devastating fourth straight loss by rallying from five down in the final 2:30, the Cumberland Redskins took no chances in overtime Saturday. The Redskins hit five of five shots in the extra session, finding the offensive execution they lacked through much of regulation, in defeating Oneida Baptist 58-49. Cumberland (19-7) appeared to be in control of the game with a 32-26 lead early in the fourth quarter, but that was before the Redskins temporarily fell apart against the Oneida press. With the help of two straight steals and baskets by junior center Mackey Moss, the Mountaineers reeled off six points in 30 seconds to pull even. Senior guard Dail Smith then heated up as the Mountaineers gained confidence, scoring five straight to give his team a 39-34 lead with 3:21 left. Brock Leisge and Kyle Simpson each hit 3-pointers and Brooks Hogue converted a three-point play in a 9-4 run that tied the game at 45-45 with 1:14 remaining. Both teams had chances to take the lead, but neither could convert. The Redskins could manage only an off-balance 3-pointer by Simpson after Desmond Johnson stole an OBI pass with 19 seconds left. It was all Cumberland in the overtime. Moss scored 16 to lead the Mountaineers before fouling out halfway through the fourth period. Smith added 10, all but one in the fourth quarter. Tyler Hixson scored 17 as Oneida Baptist (7-9) won 37-26 in the junior varsity game. Shawn Arthur poured in 30 points as Oneida Baptist (5-1) won 47-38 in a freshman game. Lady Jags knock off OBIBy Les Dixon, Sports EditorNorth Laurel Lady Jaguars stumbled into post-season play losers of six out of their last eight games. North Laurel (15-12) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, as the Lady Jaguars rolled to an easy 58-26 win, thanks in part, to their defensive play. North Laurel limited the Lady Mountaineers (5-18) to only 9-of-50 shooting from the floor, while forcing Oneida Baptist into 24 turnovers. Not only was Oneida Baptist struggling on offense, but the Lady Mountaineers didn’t have any answers on defense either. North Laurel’s Stephanie Strange scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win, while connecting on 8-of-12 free throw attempts. The Lady Jaguars finished the game hitting 20-of-65 shot attempts and 2-of-4 from 3-point range. North Laurel advances to the semifinals with the win and will face-off against 13th Region defending champion Clay County (23-5). The Lady Tigers are 11-0 against 13th Region competition and knocked off North Laurel earlier in the season, 50-37. Tip-off for Wednesday’s game is slated for 6:30 p.m. North Laurel’s boys pulled off a 60-57 upset win over favored Jackson County in Monday's nightcap. The Generals (13-15) knocked off the Jaguars (11-16) earlier in the season by the same score. The Generals connected on only 5-of-24 shot attempts in the first half and 15-of-51 for the game. The Jaguars will be back in action Wednesday in the semifinals against Red Bird (13-11). The two teams faced each other last year in the 49th District Tournament and North Laurel had to fight back from a double-digit deficit before pulling out the win. Game time is set for 8:15 p.m. Read the entire article at....TheTimesTribune.com

Jags stun Mountaineers North makes it an all-Laurel district final with 3-2 win over OBI By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer:
Even after falling behind to Oneida Baptist two times in Wednesday’s 31st District semifinals, North Laurel rallied to a 3-2 win over the Mountaineers to set up a third meeting this season with South Laurel. This time the district title will be at stake. If you had to pick a favorite going into Wednesday’s 31st District semifinal, you probably would have picked Oneida Baptist. The Mountaineers were on a four-game winning streak and already had a win over North Laurel this season. Oneida Baptist opened the scoring with 13:30 in the half. After several strong attacks led to missed opportunities, Eddie Dennis finally found the back of the net. The goal may have energized the Mountaineers, but it did nothing to North Laurel’s confidence. With 5:50 in the half Sam Marcum got in front of the Oneida Baptist defenders and punched it past the keeper for the tie. It would be the start of a big night for Marcum. Going into the half tied with the Mountaineers was an advantage for the Jaguars. It was just minutes into the second half when Oneida Baptist reclaimed the lead. Adam Stockton’s goal came on a follow. Again falling behind did not rattle North Laurel. There were 23 minutes to play when Marcum tied the score. It was a long shot that took a bounce past the keeper. A minute later the Jaguars just missed another chance in front of the goal. The Mountaineers began to show a touch of desperation. They worked the ball much quicker and with purpose. The North Laurel defense was equal to the task, shutting out the Mountaineers for the final 36:30. The two goals allowed in district tournament is the fewest allowed by North Laurel in two games this season that did not include Middlesboro and Buckhorn. And this was a much bigger stage. The winning goal and the finishing touch on Marcum’s hat trick came from effort and good fortune. A hard kick caromed off the face of Hunter Riley and ahead of the field. Marcum was the first one to the ball and finished again. The clock seemed to drag as the North Laurel defense withstood attack after attack in the closing minutes. In soccer, the official clock is not on the scoreboard. The officials keep the time on the field and stop the clock when there is an injured player. The final two minutes could take two minutes or they could take five in real time. Or they could seem like 20. For the second straight game, the middle of the field became a North Laurel celebration. This one carried over into the stands. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1372395372/Jags-stun-Mountaineers

Sentinel-Echo.com New soccer alignment will place Oneida Baptist in district with Bell County and Middlesboro
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Soccer postseason could undergo a significant change starting next year, as new district and regional soccer alignments for each of the state’s 16 regions were drafted by the KHSAA Board of Control at its regular November meeting. The soccer alignment is the latest as the KHSAA Board of Control continues to revise team sports alignments using the current adopted basketball alignment as a model. The proposed plan, submitted to member schools for feedback, would begin in the 2012-13 school year and revamp the composition of the 16 regions. The reasoning for this is to allow for future growth in districts where soccer is in its infancy, or schools that plan to start soccer programs. While some districts may appear to have stark differences in the number of teams, the difference is not as great because some schools currently field only a boys’ squad or a girls’ squad. “Obviously there are different numbers of teams in each region and in many cases, differing numbers of districts within regions. This is necessary as soccer continues to be a developing sport in terms of school participation,” Commissioner Julian Tackett explained in a letter to the state school administrators. “However, it was felt that the current alignment (in place for the 2011 season) was a potential deterrent to teams adding soccer as travel was greatly increased as the travel went across traditional region lines.” According to the current draft, the new soccer alignment would be projected for 2012-13. The final decision will be made at the KHSAA Board of Control meeting on Jan. 25, 2012. REGION 13

sentinel-echo.com Lady Jags punch region ticket against OBI By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — It took less than a quarter to realize the only drama would be if North Laurel reached 100 points. With 2:03 to play, Sarah Oliver drew a foul on an offensive rebound. Her free throw gave the Lady Jaguars triple digits in the 100-34 win. North Laurel’s previous offensive high had been 71 points in wins over Middlesboro and McCreary Central. You have to go back to Dec. 2009 to find a game where the Lady Jaguars topped 100 points, a 114-18 win over Cordia. North Laurel did earn a spot in the 13th Region Tournament at The Arena in Corbin with the win. Oneida Baptist played hard for four quarters, but lacked the ammunition to keep pace after falling behind 14-0. The Lady Mountaineers did score midway through the first quarter on an offensive rebound. ONEIDA BAPTIST (34) — Kehler 7, Nichols 2, Tebbs 9, Kebede 6, Proctor 10.
