Harlan County (16-6) led Clay County (16-6) late in the third quarter in the team’s 13th Region championship matchup last season before falling and again in the fourth quarter Thursday only to see the Lady Tigers walk away with a 45-35 win. The Lady Bears got off to a quick start offensively. Senior Johnnie Parker had seven points in the first quarter and junior Miranda Davenport added a pair of 3-pointers as Harlan County jumped out to a 17-9 lead. LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — MANCHESTER—With 4:19 remaining in Friday night’s 13th Region tussle between South Laurel and Clay County, the Cardinals had whittled a 19-point deficit down to five when Jeff Hale drove the baseline for a layup to make it, 59-54. Lady Jags draw Clay County in 49th District tourney By Denis House, Sports Editor, Sentinel-Echo.com
The bad luck continues for the North Laurel Lady Jaguars. Monday, they learned that their three suspended players wouldn’t be back for the remainder of the season. Then on Friday, they drew region favorite Clay County in the first game of the girls’ 49th District tournament, which will be held at Clay County High School. The Lady Jaguars lost to Clay County earlier this season, 59-48. But at that time, North had Cheyenne Madden, Ashley Woolum and Kendall Ellington. But those three have been suspended for a violation of rules, with Madden and Woolum with-drawing from North Laurel High School and enrolling at Rockcastle County. The opening games of the girls’ tournament will be on Feb. 22, when Oneida Baptist meets Jackson County at 6:30 p.m., followed by the North Laurel-Clay County game will be at 8 p.m. The finals will be Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. The North Laurel Jaguars avoided drawing Clay County. The Jaguars received a first-round bye, and will play the winner of the Jackson County-Oneida Baptist game. The Generals and Mountaineers will play on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Read the entire article at: www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1248736209/Lady-Jags-draw-Clay-County-in-49th-District-tourney

Roy Bowling undecided whether he will return to coach next yearEnds season with loss to Clay County in District By Les Dixon, Sports Editor of the Times-Tribune
North Laurel’s season of promise quickly turned into a season of despair after three key Lady Jaguar players were suspended for the remainder of the season heading into February. Roy Bowling’s squad entered the 2010-11 campaign as many prognosticators favorites to unseat Clay County as the two-time defending 13th Region champion come March, but things drastically changed after North Laurel lost the services of Cheyenne Madden, Ashley Woolum and Kendal Ellington. The Lady Jaguars were 11-6 with the three suspended players and 4-6 without, which included their disappointing 63-26 loss to Clay County in the first round of the 49th District Tournament on Tuesday. Is Bowling going to return to coach at North Laurel next season? “Well, that’s to be decided,” he said. “Rex (Fredericks) and I are sitting down right now and talking about it — we just don’t know right now. When we do decide, we’ll get everybody in here and tell them my decision. As of right now, we’re here, but that could change.” Read the entire story at: thetimestribune.com/sports/x1709531119/-Worst-season-I-ever-had

No stopping Clay’s Mathis By Les Dixon, Sports Editor, The Times Tribune
For those that didn’t know how good Clay County reserve Talaura Mathis is — they do now. Clay County finished the game shooting 20-of-39 from the floor, which included a seven-of-17 effort from three-point range,. The Lady Tigers also outrebounded Pineville, 32-17. It’s Clay’s day again in district finalTigers win 8th straight title with 67-51 win over North Laurel By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer, The Sentinel-Echo
MANCHESTER — To knock Clay County off the 49th District throne it would take an nearly flawless game by North Laurel. If there was a flawless game played Saturday, it was by Clay County. Clay County won 67-51 for its eighth straight district title. The Tigers have not lost in a district title game since a 52-51 loss to Rockcastle County in 2003. This year’s version of the Tigers played like they had been here before. A North Laurel team that graduated six seniors last year didn’t have the experience to call upon. Clay stays on top Lady Cards fourth quarter rally runs out of steam Sentinel-Echo
After trailing by as much as eight points in the second half, South Laurel tied the score with under three minutes to play. It would be just seconds later when Alisha Mitchell put the Clay County Lady Tigers back on top. The defense sagged down to help on leading scorer Whitney Belle Jackson and left an open shot for Mitchell. That would be enough points for Clay County to close out the win, 40-30. This is actually the third straight region title for Clay County and fifth in the last six years. They have 46 consecutive wins against 13th Region opponents. Their last loss came in the region finals in 2008 to South Laurel. Read the entire story at: www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x977544797/Clay-stays-on-top
