Manchester, KY: Detective says suspect in slaying of family of five in Leslie changed story herald-leader.com
MANCHESTER — A man accused of killing a family of five in Leslie County in 2004 steadfastly denied involvement when detectives interviewed him the day of the slayings, according to a recording. However, the story that Clayton D. Jackson told that day didn't match details that he later put in a letter, according to earlier testimony. Jackson, 30, is charged with killing Chris and Amanda Sturgill and their three sons, Michael, Robert and Jordan, early on Feb. 6, 2004. Chris Sturgill, 25, a coal truck driver, was shot in the chest with an arrow before the family's mobile home at Roark was set on fire. The boys, ages 4, 3, and 18 months, died of smoke inhalation. Amanda Sturgill's body also was found in the burned-out home. Read the entire story at....intimateviolencedeathnews.blogspot.com/2011/03/manchester-ky-detective-says-suspect-in.html

herald-leader.com After easy wins, Richie Farmer on a bumpy political road
For someone who says he once swore he'd never go into politics, Richie Farmer made it look easy in his first two campaigns for public office. Farmer, a sharp-shooting state basketball champion from Clay County in high school and a guard on the beloved 1992 University of Kentucky team that nearly won a Final Four spot, capitalized on his status as a basketball icon to win election as agriculture commissioner in 2003 despite missing a number of campaign forums. He cruised to a second term in 2007, leading all vote-getters even as the man at the top of his ticket, Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher, lost re-election by a wide margin. It's been a different story this year, as Farmer runs for lieutenant governor on a ticket with Senate President David L. Williams, R-Burkesville. His tenure has been successful, however, with increases in farm sales and the growth of a signature marketing program even as the number of employees dropped by 20 percent, Farmer said. Farmer said the Kentucky Proud program, an initiative to boost sales of farm products produced in Kentucky, has grown from a handful of participating producers to more than 2,400 during his tenure, with retail sales topping $500 million. Farmer said his record in running the Department of Agriculture efficiently is a plus for the ticket. But he also said it would be foolish to think that the name recognition he enjoys from his days as a basketball star isn't a great asset as well. Attorney General Announces Election Fraud Hotline Results
Attorney General Jack Conway announced today that his Election Fraud Hotline received six calls between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. (EDT) during the Primary Election on Tuesday, May 17. Two of the calls dealt with general election fraud complaints, three dealt with procedural questions and one call was a media inquiry. There were no vote-buying allegations. There were 106 calls to the hotline during the Primary Election in 2010. "I appreciate the efforts of our citizens who exercised their right to vote and thank them for being our eyes and ears in the polling places," General Conway said. "Obviously the low voter turnout affected the number of calls we received during the Primary Election." The Office of the Attorney General, Kentucky State Police, the Kentucky Board of Elections, the Kentucky Secretary of State and the U.S. Attorneys from the Western and Eastern Districts of Kentucky are reviewing the complaints and will investigate any that prove to be criminal in nature. The Office of the Attorney General, by law, cannot provide details regarding specific complaints or possible pending investigations. As required by statute, the Office of the Attorney General will draw six counties in a random drawing within 30 days of the Primary Election, and a post-election audit will be conducted in those counties. The preceding was a press release from....

Williams, Farmer win Republican nomination, will take on Steve Beshear kentucky.com
FRANKFORT — Kentucky Senate President David Williams won the Republican nomination for governor Tuesday, clearing the way for an expensive, no-holds-barred brawl with Democratic incumbent Gov. Steve Beshear in November's general election. Williams, who celebrated his primary victory Tuesday night at Lexington's Marriott Hotel with running mate Richie Farmer, turned back a tougher-than-predicted challenge from Louisville businessman Phil Moffett and Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Holsclaw. If the race is close, the campaign of independent Gatewood Galbraith could become a factor. Galbraith, a Lexington attorney, is trying to get 5,000 voter signatures to get on the ballot with running mate Dea Riley, a Frankfort political consultant. wymtnews.com Voters to decide if Manchester can sell alcohol Reporter: Marcus Conroy
Voters in Manchester will soon have a choice, stay dry or allow packaged alcohol sales in the city. It's a debate you not only see on front lawns, but also on Facebook. Donnie Smith has lived in Clay County his whole life, but says he's tired of watching businesses close and money dwindle. He says he's confident packaged alcohol sales would jump start the area's economy. His church's pastor says the cost of more access to alcohol is too much. Smith attends church at Manchester Baptist, whose pastor, Ken Bolin, has a simple view on drinking. Bolin also says he hopes people weigh the cost of bringing alcohol legally to Manchester before they make a decision. The election is on June 21st.
