Thelma lived in Berea most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Edith Nicholson. Thelma retired from the Purchasing Department of Berea College in 1993. She was determined to help when she realized a need. During her time at the college, she would often buy coats and shoes for students who didn’t have enough money to buy their own. She would give them money for food if she thought they were hungry. She made sure to approach them in a compassionate way so they wouldn’t be embarrassed to accept her help. She bought countless extra umbrellas so they wouldn’t have to walk to class in the rain. Her warmth and compassion will always be remembered. When her children were small, their school, Silver Creek, didn’t have a library or parent committee, so she and a few others started a parent group. They proudly opened a library, even though the only space available was a closet. She is survived by: her son Ralph King, daughter Teresa and son-in-law Mike Neil; and her two grandsons, Joey Neil and Seth Neil (and fiancée Morgan Tharpe) all of Berea. Three surviving sisters are Laura (Bill) Baker of Georgia, and Geneva (Ronald) Held, and Bennie Ann (Harry) Campbell of Berea. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her brothers Joe, Carlo and Kenneth Nicholson; and one sister Blanche Isaacs. Thelma was blessed with a large family, with many nieces and nephews. She was Mamaw to her extended Neil family and all her grandsons’ friends. Thelma was loved by all who knew her and she will be greatly missed. Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Butch Pennington on Tuesday, May 25. Interment followed at the Madison County Memorial Gardens.
