The cholesterol myth Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of heart disease in most Western countries and is associated with the accumulation of cholesterol in the walls of the arteries. This eventually inhibits the flow of blood. When there is obstruction of arterial blood flow this leads to a heart attack or a stroke. We need cholesterol for proper brain and nerve function and to manufacture hormones like testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone and adrenal hormones. Cholesterol is both made and broken down by the liver. If you need less cholesterol the liver breaks it down – if it can. A toxic over worked liver causes elevated cholesterol levels. Sugar, bread, chemicals and preservatives in food, and even painkillers cause a toxic overload on the liver and the liver can not do what it is supposed to do. Constipation and an overgrowth of parasites in the digestive tract also causes an overload on the liver thus increasing cholesterol levels. If we remove all dietary cholesterol from our diet the problem does not disappear. As the cholesterol content drops, our body starts to compensate and manufactures more cholesterol. Low fat diets can be misleading. People who practically lived on olive oil or fish oil, such as the Eskimos, have the lowest incidence of heart disease in the world. High stress levels alone can elevate cholesterol. How to lower Cholesterol levels: Detox the liver, kidneys and colon. Take Omega 3 oils, like 1-3 tablesthingys flaxseed oil, to increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), which is a carrier to remove cholesterol from the blood vessels and take it back to the liver. Eat 1-3 tablesthingys of ground flaxseed daily, which helps to detoxify the liver and remove excess cholesterol from the colon. Take Olive Leaf daily to lower cholesterol. Take Vitamin A, C, E, and selenium as antioxidants. Take Vitamin B complex to reduce stress levels. Include the following foods in your diet: apples, carrot juice, cold water fish, high fibre foods like oats, brown rice, legumes and ground flaxseed, garlic and onions which are high in sulphur, grapefruit, raw unsalted almonds and walnuts. Avoid: Margarine (a little butter is more healthy), refined carbohydrates, white sugar, carbonated drinks, caffeine, fried and take away foods which are full of saturated fats and an extra burden on the liver.

Enhancing the health-giving properties of water Keeping one or two clear quartz crystals in a water pitcher is said to enhance the beneficial effects of the water. Using other varieties of quartz will impart different tastes, such as: amethyst, tiger’s eye, or aventurine. The crystal should be clean and the container plain-glass, with fresh, preferably spring, water. Ideally, leave 10-12 hours or overnight. It is best to use immediately, but it can be stored in the fridge. By adding a few drops to your pet’s water, or stroking through their fur, you can also enhance your pet’s health.

It's Your Party Planning a party for kids, grown-ups or neighbors? Here are a few "dos" (to be done) and "don'ts" (that ruin fun). If it's for kids, if possible, go somewhere child-proof like a restaurant that caters to such events or a city park. If it's at your place, order food in. Pizza, chicken and cake fills the bill -- and kids love it. Hired entertainment helps keep them busy. Themes and decorations keep it interesting. For kids, balloons, games and stuffed animals add fun. For adults, food, drinks, music and d?cor from foreign countries or regions of the United States work well. To ease the load, have guests bring something, too. For spills, blot with club soda, spread salt and vacuum when dry.

Emergency Drinking Water Natural disasters come without warning, and survival depends on thinking ahead and knowing what to do during and immediately afterward. One of the most important things you'll need after a tornado, hurricane, earthquake or flood is a good supply of fresh drinking water in case tap water is cut off or contaminated. Plan ahead. Keep bottled water on hand, making sure it's accessible, dated and changed every six months. If you're caught off-guard, there are many options for emergency drinking water. One is your hot-water heater. Turn everything off and carefully open the faucet at the bottom. Other sources are toilet tanks, melted ice cubes and juices in canned foods. Do not drink swimming-pool water or spa water. If you have to purify water that's polluted or contaminated, strain it first to remove any sediment or matter. Then boil it for five minutes or treat it with 8 drops of liquid bleach per gallon. We take water for granted, until we need it. Be smart and plan ahead.

3 Myth-Busters About Cancer Test yourself: Which of these three cancer myths is a fact? Cancer is not contagious -- myth or fact? Some cancer is caused by contagious viruses, like HIV. So in a way, you can catch cancer. You can't directly swap cancer through bloodstream, saliva, or germs, but you can pass along some of the organisms that could cause cancer in a roundabout way. This is especially true for cervical and liver cancers, as well as some lymphomas.
Protecting your immune system can make your real age as much as 6 years younger.

Burglary Hide and Seek TV's "Police Story" premiered on this day in 1952. It was based on police files and real-life crime, where burglaries rank No. 1. Even if you've taken steps to protect yourself -- like locking doors and windows, installing security lights and having mail and papers picked up when you are away -- you still might become a target for burglars. Most burglaries are of the grab-and-run variety, taking four minutes or less. Think as the crooks do. You know they know about keys under doormats. Same goes for obvious hiding spots in the home for valuables, such as cookie jars, sock drawers and under mattress. They're the first places a crook looks. The most ransacked areas are bedrooms and dining rooms, while broom closets and garages often are ignored.

Drains vs. Brains It's the time when the world breathlessly awaits the Nobel Prize Awards and announcement of those who made great contributions to humanity. In fact, we submitted one of our contributions to mankind. Who knows, maybe it'll win. Ever notice when you're working with small parts over -- or even near -- a drain of any type (in a sink or tub or on a basement or garage floor), that when you drop one, it rolls and rolls right into the closest drain as though drawn by a magnet? Well, fear no more. All you need to do is remember to close the stopper first. "No stopper," you say? "Just an open drain"? Then cover it with a towel (or whatever), and you'll never disassemble a p-trap to retrieve a part again. OK, maybe we won't win a Nobel Prize, but surely we'll get a thank-you for saving the day. Somehow it seems only fitting that "Mighty Mouse" also made his debut on this very same day in 1955.

Keeping Your Car Paint Fresh A scratch in the paint job of your car is an eyesore at best and certainly an annoyance. Most surface scratches are a lot easier to remove than you might imagine. In many instances, all it takes is a little car polish and a bit of elbow grease. Remember, we said polish -- not wax. There is a difference. Wax is just that -- "wax" -- a protective coating, and polish is a liquid that contains a mild abrasive (it is not a protective coating). A polish-wax is -- you guessed it -- a wax that contains a mild abrasive. It is important to note that polishing should be done in the shade. Also, we have found that most polishes, rubbing compounds and waxes work better when applied with a damp rag.

Eat Up to Slim Down If you're trying to lose weight, for heaven's sake don't starve.
Instead, change what -- not how much -- you eat, so you walk away from a meal feeling full, not frustrated. Instead of a big bowl of spicy chili, have an equally big bowl of zesty gazpacho; instead of a wedge of berry pie, have a whole pint of juicy strawberries. In other words, cut calories and fat, not portions. It works, say scientists.

I’ve got you under my skin... An abscess is a build-up of pus formed within a more-or-less walled of space from infected, broken down tissue. Abscesses form in various parts of the body, including inside of the ear, on the liver, or at the roots of the teeth. They are treated by draining of the pus, or lancing, which eliminates the underlying infection. A boil is an abscess on the surface of the skin. * Drink plenty of fluids * Eat a portion of fresh pineapple daily; pineapple contains the enzyme Bromelain which fights inflammation and aids in healing.

Chain Gang Remedy When you put your fine gold and silver neck chains away gently and with great care, does it seem as if the jewelry goblin and neck-chain monster get into your things, causing twisting and tangling? We have the solution to prevent such nasty tangles. To keep fine neck chains separated and from getting tangled, cut a plastic drinking straw half the chain's length; then snip off an extra quarter inch. Open the clasp, drape one half through the straw, bring the other part around the outside and refasten the clasp.

Are you fat deficient? Depression, Dyslexia, ADD, fatigue, struggling to lose weight, or gain weight, dry skin, hair or eczema, brittle soft nails, PMS and painful periods, dry watery itchy eyes, arthritis and inflammation, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, water retention, liver problems, Diabetes, memory-loss, Alzheimer's and Schizophrenia have all been likened to an Omega 3 and 6 deficiency.
Most people are eating too much saturated "killer" fats and are undernourished in essential, healing fats.
Seeds with the the highest level of Omega 3 are flax seed 57% Omega 3, 16% Omega 6 and 18% Omega 9. Take the oil (2-5 tablesthingys per day) in conjunction with the ground flax seeds and mix it with yogurt or have it over your evening meal.
Best seeds for Omega 6 are hemp, pumpkin, sunflower, safflower and sesame.
Eating fish, such as Salmon, Mackerel. Herring, Sardines, Anchovies, and Tuna, on a regular basis will also supply you with omega 3 oils.
Did you know that if Omega 3 oils are taken during pregnancy, the IQ of the foetus can be increased dramatically.

Make Every Step Count Is your pedometer lying? You may be walking that extra mile without even knowing it.
Pedometers can be an inspiration. These fitness gizmos count your daily steps as you strengthen your legs, lungs, and heart. And every step, including those to and from your car, adds up -- or should. But researchers have found that so-called bargain pedometers vary wildly in reliability. To accurately log your fitness progress, spend $15 to $30. Pedometers in this price range proved most accurate in a recent study. Exercising regularly can make your real age as much as 9 years younger.

Good-Mood Food Which food can make you happier: an apple or some chocolate?
If you immediately said "Chocolate!" you're right, but (there's always a but) only if you really enjoy it. If a wave of fat-and-calorie guilt washes over you after the last bite, it negates the mood boost that chocolate provides. Sweet solution: Buy chocolate that has at least 70 percent cocoa. It's high in cholesterol-fighting antioxidants, and the flavor is so intense that a little goes a long way. Getting the right amount of antioxidants through diet or supplements can make your real age 6 years younger.

Drown Your Sorrows Heartburn (burning and pain in the stomach and chest) presents the following symptoms: bloating, gas, nausea, shortness of breath and /or an acidic or sour taste in the throat and mouth. Heartburn can be caused by a hiatus hernia, alcohol, smoking, and eating acidic foods. Although milk may temporarily reduce the symptoms, it will cause the stomach to increase acid production, causing further heartburn.Use of antacids provides temporary relief, but reduces absorption of nutrients, such as Iron, as well as increases blood pressure and irritates the kidneys. The following may help: * Drink Chamomile tea after eating to relieve esophageal irritation * Drink a large glass of water at the first sign of heartburn * Wash a potato and juice it. This may be mixed with other juice for flavour and should be drunk immediately.

House Sitters Planning to be away from home for a few days, a week or more? Then you've probably done the things you should do -- like stopping your newspaper delivery, having a neighbor pick up your mail and using timers to turn lights on and off at night. But experienced burglars can spot a house that seems too quiet and inactive. After a bit of surveillance, they make their move and break in -- often in spite in your efforts to fool them. There's one more trick that homeowners often overlook and that's inviting someone in to house-sit. Inviting someone to stay while you're away might be a nice break for a relative or friend and a bad break for those who wish to break in.

Gift of Family History Both Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton appeared in the "Godfather" films, which chronicled the history of the Don Corleone family. And both were born on this day. Although your family is likely less famous (or infamous) than that of Don Corleone, it still has a rich history that is worth learning about and making a record of -- for family members, and others, to enjoy for years to come. Want to make your next family gathering special? It's not too early to get started. Start by asking family members for contributions such as memorable stories, old photos and handwritten favorite recipes. Then, organize them in a scrapbook. Post recipes on a page with photos and warm words about the cook, and include shots of earlier family gatherings, like holiday meals and backyard cookouts. Make copies and put them in binders. At your next big get-together, give everyone a copy.

Go Nuts Making a heart-smart grocery list? Add a bag of peanuts. Saving your own life doesn't get much easier than this: Eat a handful of peanuts twice a week. Or almonds, walnuts, or Brazil nuts, if you prefer. Men who do this slash their risk of suddenly dying from a heart attack by almost half. Why? It's all about the good fats.
Eating a low-fat diet -- and eating healthful unsaturated fats when you do eat fat -- can make your real age as much as 6 years younger.

Kicking the TV Habit Ever look at your watch and then have someone ask what time it is, and you didn't know? What did you have for dinner last night? Don't know? We do all sorts of things mindlessly, including watching television. If you're over 55, you remember what life was like without television, but for most it's become a way of life -- a friend, baby sitter and fixture in our lives. Today kicks off "National Turn-Off-Your-TV Week." Organizers urge Americans to start kicking the TV habit to promote richer, healthier, more-connected lives. If you've had enough of bad programs and bleary eyes, here's what to do. First, rethink TV viewing. Look at TV listings to select things you?d like to see. Then stick to your choices and turn the TV off when they're over. Get up and out of the house. There's a world out there with books, plays and real people.
