OLD VERSION

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE OLD STORY:

MODERN VERSION

The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.

CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.

America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog goes on TV with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green...'

Liberal groups stage demonstrations in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, “We shall overcome.”

Liberal preachers have these groups kneel down to pray for the grasshopper's sake.

Liberal politicians condemn the ant and blames President Bush, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper's plight. They go on TV and claim the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the IRS and given to the grasshopper.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and peaceful, neighborhood.

The entire Nation collapses bringing the rest of the free world with it.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Be careful how you vote.

10 years ago Sunday I was living in Alexandria, Virginia. I lived 1 mile from the Pentagon and was awaken by the impact of American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon. I had no idea at the time what had happen or what was about to unfold that unforgotten day.

I was working for the United States Secret Service and on a normal day it would usually take me 20 minutes to get to work at The White House from home however that day running lights and siren took me 4 hours to get around abandon vehicles all along the interstate.

This time every year I never forget that day and the days thereafter and the time I flew with President George W. Bush to Ground Zero in New York City one month after the attacks. Being directly involved in 9-1-1 this really changed me. Opened my eyes and made me have a different outlook on life, made me really appreciate life more, family & friends. I have a few phrases that I try to live by and they are as follows;

“The ones that you love tell them daily that you love them because tomorrow they may be gone! Take one day at a time, Live Like You Were Dying, Enjoy it, and yourself.”

I want to personally thank all of our Police, Fire, EMS, First Responders, Public Safety personnel and all of our Military men & women who put their lives on the line everyday to keep us safe and our freedoms secure! And to all the ones we have lost trying to protect us and our country, you will never be forgotten! Also all the families who have lost loved ones due to this act of terrorism, you will always be in my prayers!

I just wanted to share this, I rarely talk about it and just a few people know this but I just felt like sharing after these 10 long years after 9-1-1.

We should never forget!

Are computer based voting machines really secure?



...I never did like the ideal of voting with a computer and this story from bradblog.com does not make me feel any safter. Brad is a left wing nut who argues that only evil Right Wingers would ever consider stealing an election but this information is distrubing for anyone...

The Vulnerability Assessment Team (VAT) at the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois has managed to hack a Diebold Accuvote touch-screen voting machine. As noted by the computer scientists and security experts at Argonne's VAT, largely all that's needed to accomplish this hack is about $26 and an 8th grade science education.

What makes this hack so troubling --- and different from those which have come before it --- is that it doesn't require any actual changes to, or even knowledge of, the voting system software or its memory card programming. It's not a cyberattack. It's a "Man-in-the-middle" attack where a tiny, $10.50 piece of electronics is inserted into the system between the voter and the main circuit board of the voting system allowing for complete control over the touch-screen system and the entire voting process along with it.

Add an optional $15 radio frequency remote control device, and votes can be changed, without the knowledge of the voter, from up to half a mile away. Without the remote, the attack can be turned on and off at certain times, or by other triggers. The voter would have no idea that their votes have been changed after they've already approved them as "correct" on the various confirmation screens, and even on the so-called "paper-trail".

The inserted chip can later be removed after the election without there being any way to ever know that someone had completely manipulated the system.
