cartermatt.com The legend of Bopper and Mark is born
“The Amazing Race” is back — and just twelve minutes into this season, we admit that we were already screaming at the TV. No show manages to make us so angry and excited at the very same time, mostly because we grow attached to teams in an insanely short period of time. So who stood out during this premiere? While there are the same collection of predictable “dating” and “sibling” teams, there were a few notable standouts. Bopper & Mark – These two may already be reality TV legends. They are quite possibly the biggest fish out of water we have ever seen on this show (at least since Dave & Mary), and we love them for it through and through. They also seem to honestly need the money more than any team we’ve ever seen, as it appears that they’re not even living in an actual house. We had our fears that they would go home this week, but they did manage to pull themselves together to land a few spots ahead of going home. Overall, this season has promise — the first team to leave was admittedly not the most exciting, and there are plenty of memorable people left worth rooting for. If there was one glaring problem here, it’s that none of the challenges (including the skydiving task that led to the “Fitness” driving disaster) were entirety original. Thanks to an extended preview at the end, it also felt far shorter than any other season premiere we’ve seen. What did you think of this first episode? Mark and Bopper get "No Respect" from TV BLEND Author: Patrick Hodges
The twentieth season of The Amazing Race got underway on Sunday night. I was in Vegas all last week, so I missed out on doing a preview of this season’s contestants. In the interests of saving space, I am going to stick with the same format I did last season and just list the teams in the order that they finished, along with any interesting moments and highlights they may have had during the episode, along with some cursory introductions. Starting Line - The Bridlewood Estate Winery in Santa Barbara, California. The teams’ first task was to search through 100 tethered balloons for one of eleven total clues to their first destination. Then, they would drive themselves to LAX where they would get tickets to that destination, which just happened to be Argentina. After landing in Buenos Aires, the first six teams would then be given tickets to the first of two connecting flights to Salta Province (giving them a 2.5-hour lead), after which they would then drive themselves to the Argentinian city of… Santa Barbara. Cuuuuuute. Clue Box #1 was to be found by a very nondescript flower cart by the side of the road on the way to Santa Barbara, and it told them to make their way to a place called the Aerodromo Gilberto Lavaque, a rather smallish airport. Clue Box #2 was the season’s first Roadblock, which entailed one team member going up in a plane to perform a 10,000-foot tandem skydive, while the other team member would have to drive to a designated location and look for the landing site. Once both team members were reunited, they were given their next clue. Clue Box #3 was, interestingly, at another winery, located in the Patios de Cafayate. Teams were tasked with making 120 empanadas, 60 filled with meat and 60 filled with cheese. One thing, though: the two types required different “closing” techniques, which I was sure would throw some teams off. Turns out I was right, and the person judging the quality of the empanadas - who one team hilariously called the “Empanada Nazi” (Empanazi?) – was a stickler for detail. The first Pit Stop of the season was only a short jaunt away from the empanada-making emporioum, in a very picturesque courtyard of the Patios de Cafayate winery. Below is the order the contestants finished in, along with some of their more interesting moments...... #9. Mark (45) and William (aka “Bopper”, 41) - Two (interracial) best friends from Manchester, Ky. They pride themselves on being from “the other side of the tracks”, which is fine, as long as they don’t keep bringing it up, and as long as their intense hick-ish drawls don’t wear thin quickly. And after one episode, it already has. Bopper is loud, obnoxious and missing a lot of his teeth, and Mark not only has a penchant for getting carsick whenever he has to ride in the back but talks like Mykelti Williamson’s character from Forrest Gump. I really don’t like to stereotype people, but this team is making it too d**n easy. This does not bode well. This season will, according to my source, include visits to Tanzania, Italy and Germany, as well as first-time destinations of Paraguay and Azerbaijan. See you in seven. chicagomag.com Chicago-Area Corruption: Is Clay County Really Worse? By Whet Moser
Today a team of UIC researchers, led by prof and former alderman Dick Simpson—the Larry Sabato of Chicago politics—released a report called "Chicago and Illinois, Leading the Pack in Corruption". It makes the broad point that the "Chicago area logged the most public corruption convictions of any federal jurisdiction in the United States during the past 36 years," and that "on a per-person basis, only the District of Columbia and Louisiana had more convictions than Illinois. Yeah, I know, dog bites man. The city has an incorporation-long history of public corruption, and it's clearly a problem. But corruption takes different forms, and rural areas tend to slide under the radar because they're outside of major media centers (which reduces not only attention, but the sort of investigative coverage that can lead to federal charges). So at the very least I wanted to compare Chicagoland to another area known, if not widely, as a hotbed of corruption: eastern Kentucky. One of the ongoing problems in central Appalachia is political corruption—not always federal-bust-level corruption, but comfortable clatches of locally powerful men who call the shots. Clay County in eastern Kentucky, arguably the poorest county in Appalachia and one of the poorest in the nation, just saw practically their entire government go to federal prison, or at least the small number of men who basically ran it, led by the poetically named Cletus Maricle..... leoweekly.com ‘Amazing Race’ party Sunday at Hooters in Jeffersonville
So, did you watch the new “Amazing Race” last Sunday? I’m sure you saw the new team from Kentucky — Bopper and Mark. They seem like decent enough guys — perhaps a bit red around the edges. The Manchester, Ky., team is certainly more entertaining than the clown couple — or those douchebags from Jersey. Bopper Minton and Mark Jackson will be in town Sunday at Kent and Vyxsin’s viewing party for the next episode of the “Race.” Kent and Vyxsin, as you recall, were on two past seasons of the show and represented Louisville well. This might be the only viewing party this season, so make your way over to Hooters in Jeffersonville to meet the new team. It’s all ages and free. Sara Havens events.leoweekly.com/?p=13800

Bopper and Mark boil their way to third
Starting the second leg of the around-the-world race in the wine region of Argentina, the teams quickly ended up bunched together as they were forced to wait until sunrise to collect the first clue. The detour offered the option of building a solar kitchen and then successfully boiling a pot of water ("Boil my Water"), or loading up a donkey with kindling and making a trek to a local village where they had to build a fire ("Light my Fire"). Nine teams opted for the less physically strenous task of putting together the solar kitchen and then waiting for the sun to work its magic and make a tea-kettle full of water whistle. But assembling the sun-catching contraption without directions proved to be a real adventure for most. Not for the Kentucky buddies, though, as Bopper and Mark made quick work of the task and left in first place only to find that an 18-hour bus ride to Argentina's capital city awaited them. Bopper Minton, Mark Jackson
Amazing Race Recap: Bopper and Mark come in fourth By Jackie Burrell, Bay Area News Group
When last we met, the math-challenged clowns were cartwheeling off into the Argentine sunset, and Rachel McWhiny from the Big Brother team had declared herself less than smart. In other news, the Earth is round and water is wet. On episode three and the remaining eight teams are headed for Asuncion, Paraguay for what CBS has teased will be a "fruity challenge." We are seriously hoping for some Carmen Miranda action, but we'll settle for that awesome watermelon stacking we're been seeing in the previews. Major Dave and Rachel and the Border Patrol are first out of the gate but naturally, the first, sold-out flight doesn't leave for another eight-plus hours, so they're soon joined at the airport by everyone else in true bunch-up style. Still, the foursome scores standby seats along with Mark and Bopper, the self-styled Kentuckies, and federal agents Nary and Jamie, who are continuing to masquerade as kindergarten teachers. Everyone else has to wait for the 10:40 a.m. flight and Rachel McWhiny of the Big Brother team is peeved. Just then, Major Dave and Rachel, the Kentuckies and "the teachers" arrive at the melon challenge. Bopper promptly gets a melon to the head, as an appreciative crowd thoroughly appreciates the spectacle. And now the exodus begins as the teachers and Kentuckies switch detours, opting for harp strings over falling watermelons. The Mississippi cousins run into Bopper in the parking lot and assume he and Mark have completed the task. Bopper reassures them -- "You'll knock it out easy!" — then takes their taxi, a move he knows means "heh, they're gonna kill us." Of course, the Mississippi cousins take one look at the melon fiasco and promptly leave to get another taxi, seething and thinking murderous thoughts. The final tally The Jersey Shore boys, Joey Fitness and Danny, get third place, while Mark and Bopper take fourth, and "the teachers" nab fifth. Only then do the frustrated Major Dave and wife Rachel get the sixth spot -- and a little added humiliation from Phil, who can't believe they screwed up so badly. Neither can we. Mississippi cousins Kerri and Stacy come in seventh, if you're keeping score. The dating divorcees snag eighth place, and the twins, Eliot and Andrew, are eliminated from the race. Next time: Italy, where the remaining teams will rappel, paint a statue, whine, whimper and bicker some more. See you then! www.mercurynews.com/entertainment/ci_20102931

thenewsjournal.net Businesses near Corbin Primary School want to be annexed so they can sell beer by: Trent Knuckles
Since Corbin voters narrowly approved the sale of packaged liquor following a citywide referendum vote on Feb. 20, local officials say interest from businesses and individuals who want to sell alcohol has been high. According to Corbin Building Inspector Frank Burke, representatives from Liquor Barn and Liquor Mart stores have already expressed interest in opening locations in Corbin. Liquor Mart is a chain of stores owned by Corbin native Paul Taylor. It has locations in Richmond, Danville, Lancaster and Manchester. Last November, while organizers were still busy rounding up signatures to put the measure on the ballot, Taylor publicly expressed interest in opening a Corbin location if voters approved the issue. Officials say it appears three licenses for package stores will be allowed by the Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control Board for the city. The number of licenses allowed is based on population. An unlimited number of qualifying stores will be able to get licenses to sell beer. Approval of the ballot initiative has had another side effect, said Corbin Mayor Willard McBurney on Tuesday. Several local businesses have expressed interest in or outright asked to be annexed into the city of Corbin so that they may sell alcohol.' Corbin city leaders made the move two years to annex Fifth Street Road and Cumberland Falls Hwy. to the point where the two roads intersect as a way to open up the option to property owners who may be interested in annexation. Originally, the plan was to only annex Corbin Primary School. thenewsjournal.net/details/5967/Liquor-store-owners-lining-up-to-put-locations-in-Corbin;-annexation-requests-rolling-in,-official-say

Bopper Minton, Mark Jackson
huffingtonpost.com Will Team Kentucky use their second chance to take home the $1 million? "Amazing Race," Sundays at 8 p.m. on WYMT
After a grueling set of challenges in and around Turin, Italy Mark and Bopper were the latest "Amazing Race" (Sun., 8 p.m. EST on CBS) team to hear Phil Keoghan say those dreaded words: "I'm sorry to tell you that you are the last team to arrive." It was an emotional scene on the mat as the two best friends from Kentucky tried -- and failed -- to hold back the tears. Talking about how he wanted to make his sick daughter proud of him, Bopper shook Mark's hand and said, "We did real good." Then, as they prepared to be Philiminated, Bopper and Mark received some good news from a totally unexpected place. Border patrol agents JJ and Art had won $10,000 for coming in first place during the leg. They announced they were splitting their prize money with Bopper so he could pay off some of his daughter's medical bills. Bopper was overcome with emotion and told Phil that being on the "Race" was "an opportunity for me, fighting for my child. And that's all it means to me." Then, as the guys waited for Phil to tell them "you have been eliminated from the race," they got another piece of good news. "This is a non-elimination leg." The best friends survived to race another day. tvovermind.com The Amazing Race Sneak Peeks: Uglier Than a Mud Rail Fence [/b] By Shilo Adams
Part of the fun of The Amazing Race lies in the countries picked for the teams to visit. Either the race heads to a mostly unheard-of land and exposes an interesting country to millions or it goes to a familiar location and tries to find a fun area to explore within in. In tonight's episode, it's the latter, as the teams head from Turin, Italy to Bavaria, Germany, still eight-deep after last week's non-elimination. Once in Germany, they must find a way to Neuschwanstein Castle, homage to Richard Wagner and inspiration for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. However, Vanessa and Ralph fall into a little trouble, apparently taking a longer way to the castle than Vanessa would like. Their hostility toward one another is nothing new on The Amazing Race, but let's hope this is the stress talking and not a sign of their team collapsing. In better spirits are Bopper and Mark, which makes sense since they were spared last week. Joined by Kerri and Stacy at a puzzle challenge, the two cut up and hit on the witch toiling over her cauldron nearby. Part of me wants to be annoyed at how lightly they're (seemingly) taking things, especially considering their near-elimination, but too many teams forget to have fun on The Amazing Race. It's kind of nice to see two people that are behind and still not at one another's throats. Yes, there's a million dollars in play, but is that worth possibly severing a good friendship? Say what you want about 'em, but Bopper and Mark are running the race their way and you have to respect that. The Amazing Race airs tonight at 8:00 on CBS. realitytvworld.com Mark and Bopper overcome "speed bump", survive another week By Elizabeth Kwiatkowski
The Amazing Race's twentieth season eliminated Kerri Paul and Stacy Bowers during Sunday night's broadcast of the CBS reality competition. The fifth episode of The Amazing Race's twentieth season began where last week's broadcast left off, with the Race's eight teams meeting with The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan and leaving the course's fourth Pit Stop at Piazza Castello in Turin, Italy. Since they had been the team to finish in first place at the Race's fourth Pit Stop, "Border Patrol Agents and Friends" Art Velez and J.J. Carrell were the first team to depart from Piazza Castello, also known as Castle Square, at 8:57AM. They were then followed by "Married Couple" Dave Brown Jr. and Rachel Brown at 11:33AM, "Friends" Joey "Fitness" Lasalla and Danny Horal at 12:11PM, "Dating Divorcees" Vanessa Macias and Ralph Kelley at 12:27PM, "Federal Agents and Friends" Nary Ebeid and Jamie Graetz at 12:56PM, "Engaged Couple" and former Big Brother houseguests Brendon Villegas and Rachel Reilly at 1:18PM, Kerri and Stacy at 3:58PM, and "Friends" William "Bopper" Minton and Mark Jackson at 5:54PM. Upon opening their departure clues, the teams were instructed to travel by train for 10 hours to Ehrwald Austria, Germany, and once there, drive across the border, make their way to the Gasthof Zum Rassen restaurant and then search for the Travelocity roaming gnome -- which would feature their next clue. Bopper and Mark knew a Speed Bump task was awaiting them in the near future because they had arrived at the Race's fourth Pit Stop in last place, incurring the penalty as a result of the non-elimination leg. Bopper and Mark learned they must listen to an expert yodel and then master the skills of yodeling a specific tune. The team was required to hit all the right notes in order to receive their next clue. Bopper and Mark completed their yodeling Speed Bump task quickly and efficiently and then selected the "Fairy Tale" Detour task. Upon receiving their next set of clues, the teams had to figure out that they were looking for the Neuschwanstein castle, the palace and home of former Bavarian King Ludwig II, whose bedroom was where they'd find their next clue. The castle had also inspired the setting for the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. Bopper and Mark then made it to the Pit Stop mat and snagged sixth place. Nary and Jamie made it to the Pit Stop mat afterwards and were greeted by Phil, who told them they had finished the leg in seventh place. Kerri and Stacy then arrived in eighth -- and last -- place. www.realitytvworld.com/news/the-amazing-race-eliminates-cousins-kerri-paul-and-stacy-bowers-13282.php

WYMT-TV City of Williamsburg goes moist
Fourteen votes was all that separated those for and against restaurant-only alcohol sales in Williamsburg. The vote was 533 yes to 519 no. Williamsburg is now considered "moist.” Those who witnessed the process said was basically a split decision. Even some of those who supported restaurant alcohol sales were surprised that it actually passed. There are 2,987 registered voters in the town and 35 percent headed to the polls. Restaurants that seat more than 100 people and have at least 70 percent of their sales coming from food have been given permission to sell liquor, wine and beer. Those who favored sales said they think it will benefit the economy. www.wkyt.com/wymt/home/headlines/City_of_Williamsburg_goes_moist_143590756.html

sentinel-echo.com Red Cross case worker is a native of Clay County By Magen McCrarey, Staff Writer
Recovering from a disaster begins with a neighbor’s helping hand, and often times that neighbor has a red cross stamped upon their chest. The American Red Cross keeps citizens united through their disaster relief efforts and has recently completed their assistance in Laurel County. A team of 11 client case workers for the Red Cross came for three days, knocking on the front doors of homes that are without a roof overhead and stepping through rubble-littered yards looking for homeowners. Homeowners that received major damaged were offered financial assistance, but between homeowners’ insurance coverage and Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster assistance, homeowners are well taken care of, said Rick Loyd, American Red Cross disaster action team captain from Nashville, Tenn. Eighty-eight homes in East Bernstadt met the Red Cross classification for assistance and cases were opened, many were for mobile homes — but not all would accept the help, Loyd said. “Most said ‘no,’ and to give the help to someone else that needed it worse,” said Red Cross Volunteer Judy Brown of Indianapolis, Ind., acknowledging their humble attitude. “And they had nothing,” Loyd added. For Brown and her husband, David, this wasn’t the first time they’d visited Laurel County but it was their first time out with the American Red Cross. Brown grew up on east Ky. 80 and her husband grew up in Manchester. Brown’s relation as a cousin to the Laurel County Sheriff John Root came to her advantage when finding addresses to visit. The Red Cross is not a government agency, and relies only upon donations of time, money and blood to do its work. An average of 91 cents of every dollar given to the Red Cross is invested in helping people with Red Cross services, said Coy Prichard, disaster services coordinator for the Southeastern Kentucky Chapter of the American Red Cross. To donate, contact Prichard at (859) 893-2395. Rockcastle County rejects alcohol sales By Karla Ward
A countywide referendum on alcohol sales in Rockcastle County failed to pass on Tuesday. More than 60 percent of voters opposed the measure, which would have permitted beer and wine sales at restaurants and allowed for some liquor stores but would not have allowed bars. It was the first time Rockcastle countians had had a wet-dry vote since 1939. Berea residents voted Tuesday to approve a measure that could allow alcohol to be sold by the glass at Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant. Unofficial results of the referendum show that residents of the East Berea precinct voted 146 to 57 in favor of permitting alcohol sales at "qualified historic sites." MOUNTAINSTORIES.NET How Ammonia Collins got her name
Ammonia Collins wasn't much fond of her name. It weren't spelled exactly right, in her opinion. Her Mama had named her "Aah-moan-Nye-uh" because she had heard the name somewhere in the mountains and thought it was pretty. Mama claimed it was either Cherokee or Choctaw and meant something right lovely, but she never remembered exactly what. The problem happened after she was born in 1951, when her mama tried to spell it out and write the name down in the family Bible and register here home birth at the courthouse over to Manchester, Kentucky. She dutifully rode from Beloved to Manchester with her husband Chester in their 1950 International Harvester truck, visited the County Clerk's office and with some difficulty and not just a little pride completed the short form announcing the birth and naming of Chester Woodrow Collins and Amy Rose (Sizemore) Collins first baby girl. realitytvworld.com Mark and Bopper move into second place on 'The Amazing Race' By Elizabeth Kwiatkowski
The seventh episode of The Amazing Race's twentieth season began where the last broadcast left off two weeks ago, with the Race's six teams leaving the course's sixth Pit Stop at Esplanade Estakada in Baku, Azerbaijan. Since they had been the team to finish in first place at the Race's sixth Pit Stop, "Married Couple" Dave Brown Jr. and Rachel Brown were the first team to depart from Esplanade Estakada at 9:15PM. They were then followed by "Border Patrol Agents and Friends" Art Velez and J.J. Carrell at 10:45PM, "Friends" William "Bopper" Minton and Mark Jackson at 10:55PM, "Engaged Couple" and former Big Brother houseguests Brendon Villegas and Rachel Reilly at 10:56PM, Nary and Jamie at 11:32PM, and "Dating Divorcees" Vanessa Macias and Ralph Kelley at 11:35PM. Upon opening their departure clues, the teams were instructed to fly to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania and they later discovered they could do so by stopping in Nairobi, Kenya. Bopper and Mark arrived at the travel agency and met the other two teams. All teams ended up booking the same flight to Nairobi. Once the plane landed in Kilimanjaro with all the teams onboard, Rachel R. and Brendon were the first team to rush out of the plane and airport, and they were soon followed by Bopper and Mark. The teams then rushed to Arusha Airstrip, where they were required to sign up for one of three charter flights to the Ngorongoro Crater. Upon landing, the teams retrieved their next set of clues and learned they must choose a safari vehicle, navigate their driver to the western rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and then find a Maasai warrior who would hand them their next clue. Bopper and Mark tested their luck with the "Courtship" task. "Courtship" required the teams to jump for an exhausting minute while they were nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. Once they could accomplish the task, they'd earn their next clue. Upon receiving their next clues, the teams learned they must unload materials stacked on a truck and then construct an elaborate safari pitch tent complete with a working shower. Once they built their camp properly and the showers worked, they could then race to the nearby Pit Stop -- the Race's seventh Pit Stop of the season -- which was located in an open grassy field ontop of a hill. Bopper and Mark finished their tent, frustrating Art and J.J. that people were beating them. Bopper and Mark then finished the leg in second place. In addition to regulating the sale of package alcohol, the ordinance passed unanimously by the Corbin City Commission Monday night and again Tuesday morning regulates the sale of alcohol by the drink. It included a new provision allowing restaurants to sell alcohol by the drink on Sunday. The ordinance permits the sale of liquor and/or beer between 6 a.m. and 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. until midnight on Sunday. With London also permitting the sale of alcohol by the drink and Williamsburg voters recently approving a referendum, Corbin commissioners said the addition of Sunday sales will make Corbin more attractive in trying to lure restaurants to the area. thenewsjournal.net/details/6090/EXTRA-CONTENT:-New-liquor-ordinance-will-allow-Sunday-sales-in-Corbin

Friends Bopper and Mark search for a clue on "The Amazing Race." (CBS Photo)
cbsnews.com Bopper and Mark move into first place on "The Amazing Race"
The most interesting part of the Tanzania leg of "The Amazing Race" Sunday occurred not at the end of the episode when a team was eliminated, but at the beginning of the hour-long show. One by one, teams were driven through Ngorongoro Crater for a safari in what host Phil Keoghan called the "Eden of Africa." All strategy and gamesmanship disappeared as contestants watched in awe as zebras grazed on the roadside, lions lazed in the sun and elephants lumbered across the trail. But once the idyllic safari ended, it was 'Game on' again. A second chance could not help federal agents Nary and Jamie, who were spared elimination last week. Their late start, plus the extra challenge they had to perform made them last to reach the pit stop and this time, they were eliminated. First-place in this leg went to Kentucky friends Bopper and Mark, who won a trip to Hawaii. This episode featured a double U-Turn, which allows two teams to target two other teams behind them, who must then perform both halves of an either/or task. Bopper and Mark refused to target anyone as did Iraqi vet Dave and his wife Rachel, who followed close on their heels. The difference is that Dave and Rachel had reached an earlier agreement with another team - border patrol agents Art and J.J. - that whoever reached a U-Turn first would target the "Big Brother" team of Brendon and Rachel. The border agents targeted the "Big Brother" team but were clearly confused. They thought the vet and his wife were ahead of them, but now they weren't sure. Dave wouldn't break his word, they kept assuring one another. The U-Turn did nothing to change the outcome of this leg: The targeted teams remained at the back of the pack but still reached the pit stop before Nary and Jamie. www.cbsnews.com/8301-31749_162-57414569-10391698/the-amazing-race-safaris-second-chances-and-soured-relationships

Mark and Bopper fall to last, but will race on by Gina Scarpa
As we head into the 9th leg of The Amazing Race teams are headed to Cochin, India where they must take a bus to Sacred Heart College in Thevara. At Sacred Heart College, teams face a Road Block. Both Rachels, JJ, Vanessa, and Mark take on the challenge of learning a Bollywood dance routine. Rachel (of Dave and Rachel) absolutely nails it and gives quite an impressive performance. In fact, she's the only one to get it on the first try! They are the first to take off for the next task, located at a nearby coffee house. Vanessa gets the dance on the third try, and Rachel gets it on the fourth, as does JJ, which leaves an exhausted Mark behind to try to finish this thing. When Dave and Rachel check in, Phil announces that they've won a trip to St. Lucia. This marks the fifth time they've finished in first! Brendon and Rachel arrive next, followed by Art and JJ, and Vanessa and Ralph. Back at the Road Block, Mark gives up after eleven failed attempts, which is heartbreaking to watch. After a pep talk by Bopper and his dance instructor, he gets back on the stage for one more try. They finally give it to him after twelve times through the dance and they head to complete Clutch It, then arrive last at the pit stop. They escaped elimination once before and make it through again. It's a non-elimination leg! The Amazing Race airs Sundays at 8/7c on CBS. www.realitywanted.com/newsitem/5324-the-amazing-race-20-episode-9-recap

Bopper Minton, Mark Jackson
Best friends from Manchester eliminated from 'The Amazing Race'
Two best friends from Manchester were eliminated Sunday from the sprint-around-the-world reality show The Amazing Race. William "Bopper" Minton, 41, a motorcycle mechanic, and Mark Jackson, 45, a former inspector for the state agriculture department, were part of the 20th season of the eight-time Emmy-winning show on CBS. The team struggled in recent episodes. Jackson experienced trouble with severe heat during a dance routine last week and with several bouts of motion sickness in previous episodes. In Sunday's episode, racers were in India and tackled a number of challenges including painting the belly of a Pulikali tiger dancer. Bopper Minton, Mark Jackson
Reality TV World 'The Amazing Race' cuts William "Bopper" Minton and Mark Jackson By Elizabeth Kwiatkowski
The Amazing Race's twentieth season eliminated William "Bopper" Minton and Mark Jackson during Sunday night's broadcast of the CBS reality competition. The "Friends" team became the seventh team eliminated from the around-the-world competition after they arrived at the Race's tenth Pit Stop at Cheena Vala Fishing Nets in Cochin, India, in last place. "The Amazing Race is called The Amazing Race for one reason -- everything about it is absolutely amazing," Mark said following his team's ouster. "Me and Mark, we've known each other all our lives. We made one deal before we left home. I said, 'Mark, we're leaving as friends and we're coming back home as friends.' I am definitely Kentucky proud, and if Kentucky is not proud of their boy, then shame on them, because I put 175% percent on the table. We're Clay County and Kentucky proud," Bopper explained. The tenth episode of The Amazing Race's twentieth season began where last week's broadcast left off, with the Race's five teams leaving the course's ninth Pit Stop at Bolgatty Palace, a heritage landmark, in Cochin after meeting with The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan. Upon opening their departure clues, the teams were instructed to make their way to a temple and then receive a greeting from the head priest along with their next set of clues. Bopper was worried about Mark still having heat stroke, as the last leg had exhausted him and made him sick. However, Mark was ready to continue racing and put everything he had into the next leg. The teams were then instructed to choose between taking on a Fast Forward task in which, upon completion, a team could skip a full task and go directly to Pit Stop or continue on with the leg normally. The Fast Forward task required the teams to make their way to another temple, find two priests and then participate in an undisclosed Indian ritual and once at the temple, learned they'd both be required to shave their heads. Before Bopper and Mark could choose to take on the Fast Forward task or head to the mats and matting place, due to the fact they had finished the Race's ninth leg in last place, they had to complete an additional Speed Bump task. However, the pair were not shown arriving at the temple and attempting to complete the Speed Bump until later on in the episode because they were so far behind. The Amazing Race began to show the beginning of Bopper and Mark's journey in the tenth leg. They arrived at the leg's first task, but before receiving their next set of instructions, they were forced to complete their Speed Bump. The Speed Bump task required the guys to properly paint a tiger on the belly of a Pulikali Tiger Dancer and prepare them for a dance. When the other Pulikali Tiger Dancers were satisfied with their work and then performed a dance for the Racers, they would receive their next clue and could continue racing. Bopper and Mark seemed to finish their Speed Bump at the temple quickly. Afterwards, they learned of the possible Fast Forward opportunity and chose to take advantage of it. They knew how far behind the other teams they were and believed their only shot at surviving in the Race was to do the Fast Forward and skip the leg's remaining tasks. Bopper and Mark then rushed to the Fast Forward task. Bopper and Mark arrived at their Fast Forward task and learned they'd both have to shave their heads. The two men were ready and willing to do it. During that time, Art and J.J. finally finished their Detour task and headed to the Pit Stop. Once Bopper and Mark completed the Fast Forward, it was a race to the finish for the two teams. Art and J.J. got stuck in traffic on their way to the Pit Stop, while Bopper and Mark seemed to sail smoothly to the finish. Art and J.J. then met Phil and became team number four. Bopper and Mark then arrived at the Pit Stop and were told they had finished the leg in fifth -- and last -- place. "Bopper and Mark, I'm sorry to tell you that you are the last team to arrive, and I'm very sorry to tell you that you have been eliminated from the Race," Phil told the team. "There's nothing we can do," Mark said. "We gave it everything we had my friend," Bopper added. "Yes we did," Mark confirmed. "Right down to taking off your hair," Phil said. "Right down to taking off my hair," Bopper noted. "You guys should be super proud of yourselves. You just ran 10 legs of The Amazing Race against some pretty tough teams -- going to places you've never been to before," Phil explained. "I had an amazing time on The Amazing Race, Phil," Bopper told him. "Driving through Salta and driving through Africa, I have no words to describe it. I had no idea what I was missing out on." "Yes we have," Mark said. "It was one of the most humbling experiences that I've ever been in in my life." www.realitytvworld.com/news/the-amazing-race-cuts-william-bopper-minton-and-mark-jackson--13417.php

Bopper Minton, Mark Jackson
Mark & Bopper talk 'The Amazing Race' Team Kentucky talks about their reception back home and more By Daniel Fienberg
In an "Amazing Race" season that has sometimes struggled to find teams worth rooting for, self-described Kentucky boys Mark Jackson and William "Bopper" Minton never had any trouble endearing themselves to viewers. Mark & Bopper were so immediately relatable and sympathetic and their enthusiasm for the experience of "The Amazing Race" was so contagious that at one point during the season, Art & JJ offered a chunk of a first place reward to Bopper, to assist his daughter. "The Amazing Race" isn't a show in which teams routinely give away their prizes, so that's not a gesture to take lightly. That was the first time Mark & Bopper finished last, but it turned out to be a Non-Elimination Leg and they recovered in the next Leg to continue their journey. A few episodes later, difficulties mastering choreography for a Bollywood dance number, coupled by health issues for both Mark & Bopper, led to their second time in last. Fortunately for them, it was a second Non-Elimination Leg. It was like "The Amazing Race" couldn't stand to see them go. Of course, when Mark & Bopper finished last for the third time on this past Sunday's episode, there was nothing to be done and Team Kentucky was sent back to Clay County, hoping they'd done right by their community. In our exit interview, Mark & Bopper talked about how they've been received back home, how they maintained their spirits on the Race and about that offer from Art & JJ. [As viewers of the show know, they're pretty passionate guys, especially Mark, and there were a bunch of questions I didn't get to ask... ] Click through for the full interview: www.hitfix.com/blogs/the-fien-print/posts/interview-mark-bopper-talk-the-amazing-race

thenewsjournal.net Williamsburg council to vote on Sunday alcohol sales
Williamsburg probably won't see the first sale of alcoholic drinks in restaurants until at least July and probably not until this fall, and when sales start they may be taking place seven days a week. On March 20, Williamsburg voters approved a referendum by a vote of 533-519 to allow the sale of alcohol at restaurants, which seat 100 or more people and derive at least 70 percent of their sales from food purchases. City officials say they don't know how much tax revenue alcohol sales will generate. The mayor said it depends on a number of factors, such as the number of restaurants and the number of people purchasing alcohol. Both Hong Kong Buffet and El Dorado have indicated they planned to serve alcohol. thenewsjournal.net/details/6143/Williamsburg-council-to-vote-on-Sunday-alcohol-sales

thenewsjournal.net Six more beer licenses issued; seven stores now selling booze in Corbin Dean Manning
Six more stores jumped on the beer wagon in Corbin Friday. After receiving notice that Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control has approved the licenses, Corbin ABC Officer Bruce Rains issued licenses for the Kroger stores on U.S. 25E and 25W, Circle K stores on Fifth Street and Gordon Street, Speedway on Falls Hwy. and Mega Mart on Master Street. They join Rite Aid, which has been selling beer since Wednesday. At least three more stores have applied to sell beer in Corbin, Rains said and decisions on those applications are expected in the next week. In addition, Rains said he expects several of the 13 stores for whom applications have been filed for licenses to sell hard liquor to eventually apply for a beer license. The 13 stores are vying for one of the three liquor licenses available in Corbin. A decision on who will receive those licenses is expected in late June or early July. thenewsjournal.net/details/6268/Six-more-beer-licenses-issued;-seven-stores-now-selling-booze-in-Corbin
