The Cowboy and His RopeThe cowboy uses a rope to round up his strays. But what does a Christian use to go after the lost—to the people who do not have a relationship with Jesus? We cannot “hog tie” people and drag them to church to hear how much God loves them. Missionaries Bill and Ruth Howse, in Arkansas, have a method of rounding up the lost. They work with horseback ministries in Arkansas and have led many cowboys to Christ. Pray that these new believers will grow in their relationship with God and that they will share their new-found faith with others. Pray for God’s blessings upon Bill and Ruth as they serve Jesus, and you, in Arkansas. STATEMENT: Many welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem by spreading their cloaks on the road He traveled. We, too, honor Christ by making available to Him what we have. Let us give ourselves and our possessions to worship Christ. Scripture in Their LanguageA minority people group living near the borders of East Asia has begun to hear and believe in Jesus. BRETT and ROSALYN KNIGHT* began working among this group more than a decade ago. A team of Bible translators, including believers from this people group, has produced eight passages of Scripture in their heart language – the beginnings of the first Bible in their language. This week, join the Knights in praising God as His Word spreads among this people group. Lift up the Bible translators as they labor to bring God’s Word to those living in this area of East Asia. *Names changed for security reasonsThe preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Muslims Without a CountryDAVID and ELIZABETH REED* sometimes encounter a wall of wariness as they work among the Uyghur people in the former Soviet Union. This group of Muslims is the second largest population segment in the world without its own country. Through one doctor’s trust, David and Elizabeth have successfully completed a number of medical and humanitarian projects in a village at the base of “Heavenly Mountains.” The first time David met the doctor, he shared the Gospel with him. While the doctor has yet to make a decision, he has become the Reeds’ champion as they start new work. God is using your prayers and your gifts to the Cooperative Program to open doors around the world. Join David and Elizabeth as they ask God to start the first church there, as well as draw the doctor to Himself. * Names changed for security reasons We do not have the power that Jesus had. We do have powers, however, to use as responsible stewards. For example, we have the power of presence and action. Being here today and giving to God are both powerful witnesses. Love In Action in QuebecQuebec, an Eastern Canadian province, has one of the largest, most unreached people groups in the world. Only .5 percent of Quebecois attend an evangelical church. GARY and SUE SMITH are working diligently for the Kingdom of God as they embrace the challenge of planting churches that will reach these people for Christ. Pray that God will raise up church planters for the work, especially indigenous ones. Also, pray that current church starts and churches will continue to passionately love the lost to Christ. You are putting love in action in Quebec as you participate in the Cooperative Program. STATEMENT: The message of this Scripture is that we are to love, be charitable, and have a giving nature. A Christian steward expresses concern for others by giving whatever is appropriate. Giving is right because it is compatible with God’s nature and the nature He planned for us. A Heart and A Vision for Church PlantingBILL and CAROL LIGHTY serve the Pikes Peak Baptist Association. Bill, a native of Colorado, provides leadership and strategic planning help to the pastors of the 46 churches in the association. In addition to his many responsibilities, Bill provides a listening ear for area pastors and churches and makes resources available to assist them in planting additional congregations, which in turn, will reach more people for Christ. Starting new churches in order to reach the increasingly diverse population of Colorado is hard work. Baptist Campus Ministry at the University of DelawareAt the University of Delaware, missionaries BLAKE and JENNY HARDCASTLE reach out to 16,000 students, thanks in part to our support of the Cooperative Program and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Knowing that only about 300 of these students are involved in evangelical Christian groups on campus, there is a great need and opportunity to share the Gospel. As Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM) director, Blake leads Bible studies and mentors students to boldly share their faith. This week, pray for Blake and Jenny and for the students who attend the BCM regularly but who have not made professions of faith. Pray for student leaders to grow in their faith. Catching the VisionOnly five Baptist churches exist among the 3.5 million Spanish-speaking Colombians who call themselves Paisas. In 2007, after 15 years of no new work, DAVID and JOYCE CRANE rejoiced when a house church found a home in an older residential area. One week later, five of its members started a new house church in the hillside of the adjacent mountain. These lay disciples have caught the vision and are putting into practice their training and prayer walking to make new contacts. Your prayers and participation in the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering are making a difference. Pray for these new believers as they step out to share God’s story with people they’ve never met. South America is the focus region for the 2008 Lottie Moon offering theme “GO TELL the story of Jesus.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Praying for a Spiritual Awakening in New YorkLandon and Cristy Reesor want to see a church planting movement emanate from metro New York City and expand to other unchurched cities in North America and ultimately to unreached people groups at the ends of the earth. Home to the third largest metro environment in the world, with 21 million people, New York City’s diversity includes 140 languages and representatives from practically every country. New York City is one of the world’s most influential cities; it desperately needs a spiritual awakening that will point people to Christ. Pray that God will multiply the ministry of the Reesors and raise partners to join the journey of church planting in New York. STATEMENT: God created people just a little lower than Himself for a purpose. He put people in charge of the world. Christians reveal their management skills by the percentage of resources they use for themselves, for citizenship, and for Kingdom work. A Living TestimonyAMAURY SANTOS is a living testimony to the work of your Southern Baptist missionaries. Born in the Dominican Republic, Amaury was introduced to Christ at the age of 14 and was helped in his faith journey by International Mission Board missionaries at a large, bilingual church in Santo Domingo. Today, he is a church planting missionary in Florida. Our participation in the Cooperative Program enables Amaury to train leadership, locate facilities, and assist sponsoring churches in beginning new language ministries in Florida. Pray for him and his wife, STEPHANIE, as they serve Christ through church planting. STATEMENT:“Man shall not live by bread alone” is among the first of many teachings Jesus gave us about relating to material things. The importance of wealth and possessions often influences a person’s desire to give to God through the church. African Men Gathering for PrayerOn Monday nights in a small, dingy restaurant, men gather for a time of prayer, sharing, training, and Bible study. This is unusual in the culture where KELLY and LINDA SMITH* serve in Central Africa. Most men never openly share their feelings with others – especially other men. However, these men are beginning to reveal their struggles and praises – many for the first time. Pray for Ntaganda, Emile, Augustine, Sam, Martin, and Eric. Pray for Innocent, the newest member, as he seeks to find peace and contentment. He has not surrendered his life to Christ, but he is open to knowing more. Pray that others will join the group, and that they will start similar groups in this war-torn area. * Names changed for security reasons STATEMENT:Christian stewardship includes the way we live our lives before our children. Mothers like those in Timothy’s family—Lois, his grandmother, and Eunice, his mother—were good stewards in the home. Most stewardship, including giving, is learned in the home. Georgia Hispanic CongregationsWorking in south Georgia with Hispanic congregations, Dennis Rivera is praying that more Hispanic Christians will embrace a vision of witnessing outside of their own communities. As they assist churches and associations in starting Hispanic congregations, Dennis and his wife, Rossy, pray that the estimated 300,000 Hispanics in South Georgia will become Christians and join healthy, growing churches. The Riveras need your prayer support in order to effectively reach out to the growing Hispanic population with the Gospel. Pray that the Lord will send more laborers to this harvest field. God Is Working Through Personal RelationshipsDAVID and BILLIE HUNTER* have seen an unprecedented response to the Gospel in the Middle Eastern city where they live, especially among Muslim professionals. Through satellite TV, radio, and the Internet, an increasing number of residents are hearing the Good News of Jesus. The Hunters also have seen God work through personal relationships. One of their team members befriended an employee at a local restaurant. The Muslim woman asked for help improving her English. English lessons were soon replaced by discipleship sessions from the Bible. The woman became a Christian and began sharing her faith. God is blessing your participation in the Cooperative Program. The Cooperative Program at Work in HungaryOur commitment to the Cooperative Program enables RON and ROBIN BROWN to find ways to reach those residing in the western side of Hungary. Recently the foreign language department of a local university asked Ron to teach an advanced English class. Occasions such as the birthday of C.S. Lewis, a discussion about American Thanksgiving traditions, and questions about Christmas afforded opportunities for Ron to talk about Christ. At the end of the class, 10 students eagerly took Hungarian-English New Testaments as a gift, and doors remain open for further witnessing opportunities. Students also are invited to participate in house group gatherings where the Bible is studied and the Gospel is discussed in depth. Pray for the Browns as they continue to search for ways to introduce the Gospel to the lost in Hungary. STATEMENT: Giving to God is to be approached with such reverential awe that we dare not mar the experience with unconfessed sin. Let us examine ourselves, ask for forgiveness for our sins, and then present our gifts to God. The North American Mission FieldGeographically, Guam is in the western Pacific and is part of the Mariana Islands. However, as a U.S. territory, Guam is also a North American mission field. JIM and JENNY DITTY coordinate church planting and the strengthening of existing churches in the Guam Baptist Association. The association is comprised of six churches, one mission, and one Bible-study church plant and encompasses work in 600-700 square miles of land. It includes people from all of the islands. From large cities to small islands, your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program is making a difference. This week, join Jim and Jenny in praying for revival in the islands. Mark 12:41-44 Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. Summoning His disciples, He said to them, “I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed—all she had to live on.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Judy Miller and One StoryThrough a new program called OneStory, JUDY MILLER shares God’s Word with oral learners in Benin, West Africa. Judy asks participants to repeat each story with accuracy. After sharing about Adam and Eve in the garden and their subsequent fall, Judy asked listeners what this story revealed. One young man answered, “Well, man once walked with God in the garden, and then because man disobeyed God, that friendship is broken. We need someone to fix it!” Pray that this young man and many oral learners like him will come to the realization that their friendship with God is broken and that Jesus is the only way to reconciliation. Thank you for your love for people and support of the Cooperative Program that allow vast numbers of unreached people to have access to God’s Word. Proverbs 30:8-9 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me. Give me neither poverty nor wealth; feed me with the food I need. The Study of a LanguageIn the fall of 2006, CLIFF and CLAIRE THOMAS* arrived in East Asia and began language study. As time passed, their communication skills grew, and by the following spring, conversations lasted longer, relationships began to form, and Cliff started to drink cup after cup of tea as he chatted with the locals. Whispering Pines and Silver LakesThe Whispering Pines and Silver Lakes Baptist Associations in the Utah/Idaho Southern Baptist Convention are located in the Idaho panhandle in some of the fastest growing areas of Idaho. There are a total of 13 churches and two new works. JOE BONEY, director of missions and church starter strategist, is responsible for encouraging, supplying resources for churches, and assisting the pastors. Your participation in the Cooperative Program is reaching people, assisting pastors, and starting churches in this growing area of Idaho. To the Least of TheseMissionaries MICHAEL and MARILZA ALLEN describe Uptown Baptist Church in Chicago, Illinois, as a multicultural, multiethnic, and multieconomic congregation. There are at least 15 different languages represented in the congregation. Michael serves as senior pastor of this diverse church. In addition to the church services, there is a ministry to the “least of these,” thanks to your commitment to putting love in action through the Cooperative Program. More than 300 people are fed a nutritious meal each Monday night, and 50 homeless people sleep in the basement each evening. The Allens are seeing many people come to Christ; they ask that you pray for God to provide additional space for future growth. 2 Samuel 8:9-11 When King Toi of Hamath heard that David had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer, he sent his son Joram to King David to greet him and to congratulate him because David had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Toi and Hadadezer had fought many wars. Taking the Gospel to the StreetsAMY JOHNSON is taking the Gospel to the streets of Nicaragua in Central America because of your obedience to the Great Commission and commitment to the Cooperative Program. Strong Evangelistic OutreachThe following article was written by Dr. Bill Mackey, executive director of the Kentucky Baptist Convention.....Dr. Bill Mackey, executive director Kentucky Baptist Convention I am so grateful for pastors and associational leaders who take the initiative in evangelistic outreach. I was recently exposed to two great examples of this evangelistic commitment. The first example is Muhlenberg Baptist Association where God worked in a tremendous way through an evangelistic crusade held Oct. 12-16. Thirty-six churches from the association were involved in sponsoring the crusade led by evangelist Ronnie Owens from Tazewell, Tenn. According to Director of Missions Ray Gilliland, the crusade resulted in 51 professions of faith, 20 rededications, a commitment to missions service and other decisions. As a result, New Harmony Baptist Church baptized seven people the next Sunday. The second example is that set by the Second Baptist Church of Greenville where Ray England is pastor. I had the privilege to preach at this church during Friday-Sunday night services that saw several people make decisions for Christ. This church actively reaches out to its community through 34 different ministries. These include an “Angel Food” ministry that serves 350 monthly, a youth and children’s ministry that has 147 enrolled in Sunday school, a summer lunch program that serves 250 children and a meal ministry that serves 65 senior adults three meals each week. Church members are also actively involved in Upward sports programs that serve children and families through youth basketball and soccer leagues. Second Baptist has experienced outstanding growth during the past 10 years. Sunday school average attendance has grown by 100 percent (401) while worship attendance (566) and resident membership (901) have each grown by 120 percent. During the same time, undesignated receipts have grown by 166 percent ($831,750 in 2007). Since 1949, the church has contributed more than $1.7 million to missions through the Cooperative Program, with 40 percent given in the last 10 years. CP gifts were $88,864 in 2007-08. The church has added a Family Life Center where the contemporary worship services are conducted, along with special services. The church’s Family Life Center is very spacious and includes a full stage, bride’s room, large gathering space, and up-to-date technology. England said the church’s top five “essentials” for growth have been: 1) being genuinely friendly, 2) developing evangelistic relationships, 3) knowing people and relating to them, 4) adding contemporary worship, and 5) becoming missional in emphasis. The church’s ministerial staff includes Bob Thurman, associate and minister of education; Brian Schindler, minister of music and youth; and Josh Smith, minister for children and recreation. England said he is very grateful for the staff, outstanding lay leaders, and those who share the Gospel with passion. Please pray for Brother England’s health as he continues to give visionary leadership, and for pastors and staff members in all churches. Dr. Mackey's column appears weekly in the Western Recorder. International Seafarer's CenterSome 2,500 miles away from the ocean, MARSHAL BUNDREN greets ships from all over the world carrying crew and cargo up the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Port of Indiana in Portage. As director of the International Seafarer’s Center, Marshal sees more than 300 ships come and go during the year. Marshal ministers aboard the ships as well as at the seafarer center. He appreciates our prayers and asks that we pray for many lives to be changed by the Gospel as a result of the International Seafarer’s Center ministry. Pray that the Gospel will spread as these crews return to their home countries. STATEMENT: The Bible challenges Christians to be faithful stewards. In this Scripture, Paul uses the word stewardship in the context of sharing the Gospel. Faithful giving is one way we can help share the Gospel and express our stewardship. Challenging Churches to Look OutwardChallenging churches to look outward to minister to their communities, including prompting a vision for church planting, is the primary focus for KEITH and ANN LAWRENCE. Keith serves as associational missionary for the Maine Baptist Association, providing training, resources, and encouragement to 18 churches as they accomplish their task of reaching the 1.2 million people in their local harvest field. Keith and Ann know the task is too large to accomplish on their own. They are counting on our prayers and our commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program to impact the people living in their area. This week, pray for the communities who need new churches and for pastors to serve them. Exodus 20:3 Do not have other gods besides Me. Baptist Friendship House in New OrleansMICHELLE BRUSS is a US/C2 missionary at Baptist Friendship House in New Orleans, Louisiana. This is a transitional housing ministry for homeless women with children—a demographic that is the fastest growing population of poverty in America. At Friendship House, women receive assistance as staff and volunteers help them address their spiritual needs as well as helping them with day care, school placement, employment, financial planning, and locating affordable housing. Your love for people and participation in the Cooperative Program make it possible for Friendship House to share Jesus with those who come through its doors in a city that is still recovering from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. Pray for all who come through the doors of the Friendship House and for the volunteers and staff as they share the compassion of Christ. STATEMENT: A part of Christian stewardship is being a good citizen. Taxes are to be paid when due, thus fulfilling our obligations. The one part of Christian stewardship that can never be satisfied is our need to express love. Loving, as expressed in giving, is an ongoing characteristic of a Christian.
