Reaching Africa and the Middle East in Paris, FranceThough they live in Paris, the ministry of JORDAN and LISA TATE* focuses on several people groups who are not from France. Assisted by your prayers, the Tates share Christ with the city’s two million Muslims from Northern Africa and the Middle East. Along with their responsibilities as strategy leaders, prayer coordinators, and culture and language acquisition coaches, the Tates enjoy sharing Christ with their neighbors. One morning each week, Lisa has breakfast with a North African woman who has become a close friend. Sometimes other women from Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and America join them. Bible stories and spiritual truth also are shared as these women build friendships and find support in one another. * Names changed for security reasons Romans 13:7-8 Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect, and honor to those you owe honor. Church Planting in Sir LankaGREG and SYDNEY CARGILL* are praying and working toward a church-planting movement among the 2.5 million Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims living in Sri Lanka. Following a training event, a national partner led a small ministry team into a village where they came across a man troubled by demonic influence. The team shared with him that God had given them authority over demonic forces. After the group prayed over him, the evil spirit departed. Immediately, the man took the group to share with others. He meets regularly with nine new Christians, and several have been baptized. Pray for this man and for the Cargills as they continue to serve the Lord and you in Sri Lanka. * Names changed for security reasons STATEMENT: In almost everything we do, there are reference points. The first commandment is important in reference to our giving. Christians are good stewards when they live, give, and care in a way that puts God first; in a way that says, “God is owner, we are managers.” The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Reaching Students on Campus in CanadaGREG and SHAWN IDELL are responsible for ministry to more than 100,000 university and college students in Edmonton, Canada. Students’ spiritual needs are being met in part through a Baptist student ministry group at the University of Alberta, Grant MacWewan College, and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Your prayers and participation in the Cooperative Program empower the Idells’ efforts to put love in action with our northern neighbors. Greg also volunteers as the chaplain for the University of Alberta’s football team and leads a pre-game chapel service. The Idells have planted a student church on campus. Recently a Chinese couple has opened their home to small group meetings after the wife, Lu, became a Christian in October of 2006. This week, please join the Idells in praying that Lu’s husband, Xianli, also will choose to follow Christ. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Now about the collection for the saints: you should do the same as I instructed the Galatian churches. On the first day of the week, each of you is to set something aside and save to the extent that he prospers, so that no collections will need to be made when I come. Sam and Lisa Paris in VenezuelaSince 1991, SAM and LISA PARIS have been working with national Baptists in church planting/developing in the west-central area of Venezuela. Their most recent focus has been the unreached population of professionals and university students. This highly educated group comprises approximately 20 percent of the country’s population. Sam and Lisa utilize resources such as literature, training materials, and multimedia outreach tools to minister to this community. Pray for a network of home-based churches in the city of Barquisimeto and the community of Cabudare. Ask God to use professional and university-educated believers to reach out to their families, neighbors, friends, and coworkers. Your faithful participation in the Cooperative Program is making a difference. South America is the focus region for the 2008 Lottie Moon offering theme “GO TELL the story of Jesus.” STATEMENT: Fathers are to be responsible for managing the affairs of their families. Providing the material necessities for one’s family is as much a part of Christian stewardship as giving to God. But providing for one’s family and giving to God should be kept in line. A Concert Ministry at the University of MassachusettsReaching college students at the University of Massachusetts and Amherst and Hampshire Colleges requires creative methods. One innovative approach missionaries NATHAN and SARAH CARTEL use is concerts—two a week. Relationships and conversations that result from these allow students to learn about Christ or to grow in their Christian faith. The Cartels are seeing an average of 200 students at these concerts—students who would not normally set foot in a church. Join the Cartels in praying that the trickle of interest which has started with the concert ministry would turn into a flood of new believers on these college campuses. 1 Timothy 5:8 Now if anyone does not provide for his own relatives, and especially for his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Church Planting in Maryland and DelawareRolando Castro and his wife, Zulma Acuna, are church planters in Maryland and Delaware. Rolando supervises church planting among Hispanics and other language groups. Currently, 20 percent of the 105 churches in the Maryland/Delaware convention are ethnic. Rolando encourages and trains language pastors to plant churches. He also helps find the places, pastors, and partners for church plants. Rolando is grateful for your prayers and requests that we join him in praying that more ethnic people will hear and respond to God’s call to plant new churches. STATEMENT: Worshiping regularly on the Lord’s Day reminds us that Christ arose victorious over sin and death. When Christ’s life fills and directs our lives, our faithful giving each Sunday becomes one expression of our commitment to Him. Taking Care of MissionariesWho takes care of missionaries as they serve the Lord, and you, in the field? DWAYNE and BETTY MITCHELL serve missionary families in Zambia, meeting logistical needs such as transportation and housing. They are excited to help new missionary families become established among people groups who have little or no access to the Gospel. Dwayne and Betty meet missionary families’ physical needs, and in turn, the families are able to meet the spiritual needs of those in Zambia who need to know Christ. Last year, the Mitchells assisted two new families with secure and comfortable homes among two of the least reached people groups in Northern Zambia. Pray for the Mitchells and for the two new missionary families serving in Zambia. Developing Leaders in North DakotaServing as an associational director of missions for Northland Baptist and South Valley Baptist Associations, MORGAN MEDFORD and his wife, JANIS, help the 12 churches scattered over an area that encompasses the eastern third of North Dakota, some 25,000 plus square miles. Morgan focuses his efforts on developing leaders, helping churches develop ministry plans, as well as leading the associations to do church planting. Even though most of the congregations are small, the needs of those living in the area are great. Pray that the churches in eastern North Dakota will share the joy of knowing and loving Jesus. Also pray that new churches will be planted which will impact families living in these rural communities. Greater Detroit Baptist AssociationForty-eight churches, 13 missions, and 16 Bible study fellowships are part of the Greater Detroit Baptist Association in Michigan. Led by director of missions, Joe Ryckman, this association includes the largest predominately African-American city in America as well as the largest Middle Eastern community outside of the Middle East. Unfortunately, many of the older churches in the association are declining. Please join with JOE and MARGARET RYCKMAN in praying that God will use your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program to create in Michigan churches the desire to grow and reach their communities for Christ. STATEMENT: The Hebrews’ worship of God was prompted by commitment. Commitment resulted in trespass (repayment or guilt) offerings and peace (fellowship) offerings. For Christians, Christ has made a once-and-for-all-time sacrifice for our sin. Our giving is our gratitude. Following the Call in Brazil & FranceDON and BILLIE DIXON began their service as evangelist/church planters among the hearing and hearing impaired in Brazil. Since then, they have lived out this calling in various cities in Brazil and France. After taking a leave of absence to help their oldest son and daughter-in-law with the addition of quadruplets, they are now city strategists, leading the International Mission Board team in Lisbon, Portugal. New Bible studies lead to new churches which are meeting in homes, office buildings, university campuses, and elsewhere. The Dixons are grateful for your prayers and for your faithfulness which enable them to put love in action though the Cooperative Program throughout Portugal. This week, pray for the Dixons and their team. STATEMENT: The answer to the first question in this Scripture is “nothing.” The answer to the second question can be that the Christian gives whatever he can back to God, because God has given him eternal life. We also give to help share the Gospel with others. Nehemiah Church Planting ProfessorAs Nehemiah Church Planting professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, GUS SUAREZ leads students to learn about and engage in church planting. He trains language/cultural people to reach people from different cultures, laypeople to reach others in the marketplace, and injects a passion for church planting at every level of church leadership. Your prayers and support through the Cooperative Program assist Midwestern students in receiving the training they need to pursue God’s call on their lives. Pray for Gus and his wife, DIANA, as they train up a new generation of pastors and church planters. STATEMENT: Freedom is precious to Christians. God created us free to manage our lives and the material resources that He provided for our use. We have freedom to use a worthy portion to serve Christ, as when we give to our church. This pleases God and fills our own lives with joy. "The Well" in BangkokStriving to help women and men leave prostitution and start a new life in Christ, SUSAN MATTHES works with two other International Service Corps members in the red light district of Bangkok, Thailand. Susan and her coworkers accompany former bar workers who have completed a program called “The Well” back to their province to present prevention programs to at-risk teenagers. Susan hopes that these who have found Christ will share the Good News with their families and friends. The first bar girl that Susan met talked with her about leaving the bar. The LEAD Team in South AsiaDENNIS and LOIS HARTNETT (names changed for security reasons) are one of six couples who make up the LEAD team in South Asia. Each couple travels to teach basic Bible doctrine, leadership, and church-planting principles to national leaders. Pastor Vipul (name changed for security reasons) learned about chronological Bible storying at a LEAD seminar in India. Though skeptical, he gave it a try. He went to a Hindu village and left with 30 names to follow up with and an invitation to return. Six months later, he was telling stories to more than 120 people in eight different villages. Your faithfulness to the Cooperative Program is helping spread the story of Jesus. Pray that the people of these villages will have open hearts as they hear the greatest story every told. Montana's Big Sky Baptist AssociationThe 12 churches and two missions of Montana’s Big Sky Baptist Association are trying innovative ways to reach the ranching communities with the Gospel and start new churches in towns that are declining in population and where mainline churches are closing. EDDIE SMITH serves this association as director of missions. He and his wife, MARY, ask you to join in praying specifically for the pastors working with ranchers. The churches are very small, and the towns are often isolated. Your prayer support is a great encouragement to the pastors and people living in Montana. Please add the Smiths to your prayer list this week. Genesis 14:18-23 Then Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine; he was a priest to God Most High. He blessed him and said: Abram is blessed by God Most High, Creator[10] of heaven and earth, and give praise to[11] God Most High who has handed over your enemies to you. And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.[12]Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the possessions for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand in an oath to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, that I will not take a thread or sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you can never say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. God's Word Continues to Spread Across Northern AfricaAs strategy coordinators for an unreached people group of Northern Africa, MARK and LINDA WEBBER (Names changed for security reasons) design and implement strategies to foster a church-planting movement among this population. Nationals living in this restricted access country could be jailed or killed for having Bibles in their homes. In the past year, the first Gospel radio broadcast in this people group’s dialect aired within the country’s borders. The Webbers are able to respond to questions stirred by these broadcasts, and in recent months, they have heard of two families who have come to the Lord. Cooperative Program gifts from churches like yours are taking the Gospel to those living in this restricted access land. Pray for the Webbers and for God’s Word to continue to spread across Northern Africa. STATEMENT: A person’s giving to God is prompted by a basic attitude. Abraham is an example. His attitude was that all he had belonged to God. He refused to keep the things he captured in battle even after he gave 10 percent of it in gratitude and worship. Unselfishness and giving go together. Hearing Impairment Becomes MinistryTHAD NORRIS (name changed for security reasons) had no idea what God had in store when he moved to Central Asia. Because of hearing difficulties, learning Russian made Thad nervous. After a suggestion from a coworker, Thad enrolled in classes to learn Russian Sign Language. Now Thad easily communicates with the deaf. Because of his own hearing impairment, the deaf have accepted him as one of their own. He has guests, usually deaf, in his home regularly. God has given him many opportunities to share His Word, to challenge new believers, to travel to other cities, and to connect with some of the more than eight million deaf in Russia. The Gospel is spreading, thanks to your faithfulness in praying for these who have responded to God’s call to full-time missionary service. Pray for Thad this week. STATEMENT: To take this truth seriously, you find yourself working side by side with God in the field, warehouse, bank, shop, office, home, or pulpit. The Cooperative Program at Work in Reno, NevadaMELANIE LAWLER grew up in Mississippi and professed Christ at an early age. After surviving a major medical crisis, her faith became even stronger. Today, Melanie is a missionary serving as ministry evangelism specialist for the Sierra Baptist Association in Reno, Nevada. Ninety-five percent of the association’s population do not have a relationship with Jesus. ESL ministries, kids’ clubs, food ministries, and special community events enable Melanie to assist churches in introducing people to Christ. Whether it’s across the ocean or across the country, you are putting love in action as you participate in the Cooperative Program. This week, pray for Melanie as she helps churches reach beyond their walls and into their community to share the Gospel. Praying for the Harvest in MadagascarThe island of Madagascar remains an enigma to the outside world – a mystery that TONY and TONYA ELLIOTT (names changed for security reasons) work to solve. By surveying the Malagasy people, Tony and Tonya create prayer advocacy materials. The information the Elliotts gather is used to write job requests for career missionaries to work with the different peoples of Madagascar. When the Malagasy people beg Tony and Tonya to start a church and teach them about Jesus, they are thrilled, yet heartbroken, as they don’t have time to work with each group. The harvest is great, and the Malagasy people are waiting for more workers to tell them about Christ. Your increased participation in the Cooperative Program will send more laborers to the harvest field in Madagascar. Pray for the harvest and for laborers on this island. Genesis 25:29-32 "Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field, exhausted. He said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I'm exhausted." That is why he was named Edom. Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright." "Look," said Esau, "I'm about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?" The Righteous WayThough MOSES and BETH MIVEDOR are still in language study, God is moving mightily among the Fulani of West Africa. The broadcast “The Righteous Way” is a chronological Bible storying series in the heart language of the Fulani people. The broadcast airs twice a day, seven days a week. Many members of the community have contacted Moses and Beth with interest in the program and have requested copies of the stories. Even the Mivedors’ local tailor has asked to borrow a copy of the JESUS film, and many of his neighbors have watched it in his house. Putting Love In ActionDANIEL and DENISE CLYMER work with Native Americans in New Mexico, where there are 34 Native American Southern Baptist congregations. Daniel is helping develop statewide strategies to reach Native Americans. Denise plays an important part in the outreach strategy and coordinates a food pantry and clothes closet. Daniel grew up in a church that was committed to putting love in action through the Cooperative Program. Now he is on the receiving end of your gifts and faithfully shares the love of God with those living in the state nicknamed “The Land of Enchantment.” Pray that the work will thrive in the days ahead, and that more Native Americans will come to know Christ and be bold witnesses to others. Praying for a Spiritual RenewalAs national missionaries for church renewal, BOB and PHYLLIS FOY’s passion is helping churches (especially those plateaued or declining) coordinate lay-led revival weekends that take their members on a spiritual journey of awakening, equipping, commissioning, empowering, and sending to evangelize and disciple their Acts 1:8 mission fields. God is honoring your prayers and using your gifts to equip volunteer leaders and others to lead in this discipling process. Church members are challenged to use their God-given gifts to build the Body, at home and abroad. Pray for a spiritual renewal in your church and across America. STATEMENT: Birthrights usually placed the eldest son in an honorable position. Stewardship was involved in addition to responsibility and accountability. Christians are blessed with a birthright and are also responsible and accountable for the way life and resources are used. To Party or To PrayMissionary KENNETH DILLARD serves as campus pastor at the University of Cincinnati. He meets with students for personal discipleship, plans ministry events, and interacts with other campus ministers, faculty, and staff. Located in an area surrounded by Greek houses, students involved in Baptist Collegiate Ministries search for ways to connect with the hundreds of students who would rather party than pray. His wife, MARY, is a partner in marriage and ministry. God’s love is being shared on college campuses across America, thanks to your participation in the Cooperative Program. Praying for ProtectionBoth GARY and MARGARET SIMONDS (names changed for security reasons)use their vocational fields as avenues for sharing Jesus with those in Northern Africa and the Middle East. Gary works in the business world as a consultant on leadership and management for young professionals. Margaret is a physician providing quality medical care at a refugee clinic. Patients have opportunities to see the JESUS film, speak with national believers, and receive free Bibles. People are coming to Christ, but many are fearful of openly acknowledging they are followers of Him. Pray that God will send people with open hearts to the business seminars and the clinic. Also pray for the protection of new believers. STATEMENT: Giving to God has always been in relation to the amount God gives to people. A Catalyst For UnReached People GroupsHANNAH MORRISON (name changed for security reasons) came to East Asia to be a catalyst for new work among an unreached people group. She spends much of her time studying language and helping a local believer lead a small group. Hannah has witnessed more than 10 people give their lives to Christ, as well as the first baptism ceremony within her group. One believer from Hannah’s fellowship regularly shares his faith and reaches out to others from his dialect group. Many of these new believers struggle because they cannot frequently worship with other Christians. God is changing the hearts of those who regularly meet together – they have set aside their idols to follow the true and living God. Changed lives are proof that your Cooperative Program gifts are making a difference. Pray for these new believers this week. 1 Thessalonians 4:10b-12 "But we encourage you, brothers, to do so even more, to seek to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, so that you may walk properly in the presence of outsiders and not be dependent on anyone." Testament of God's CallingDANIEL CACERES’s greatest joy is leading people into a personal relationship with Christ. Daniel and his wife, MARTA, are North American missionaries starting new churches in Oklahoma. Daniel serves as the state Hispanic Church Planting Strategist for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma. The 77 Hispanic churches he helped start in the past five years are a testament to his living out God’s call on his life. Pray for Daniel and Marta as they seek to do their part in fulfilling the Great Commission by personally sharing Christ and starting new churches among Hispanics in Oklahoma. (For more on Daniel & Marta Caceres, see Baptist Press Article dated 2/29/08) STATEMENT: From the beginning, a part of people’s stewardship—management of God’s world—has involved work. The New Testament champions honest work. From our work, we have financial resources to give through our church to support God’s work. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Reaching Out to Students in OregonThe majority of the 4,000 full-time students at Central Oregon Community College and Oregon State University-Cascades in Bend, Oregon, are not Christians. ANDREW and MICHELLE DAVIS are collegiate evangelism missionaries on these campuses, focusing on sharing Christ and helping others to do the same. Building relationships with students is key to seeing this accomplished. This week, pray that the Davises will have many opportunities to share God’s love with these young adults. Pray that students’ hearts will be open to hearing about Christ, and that campus leaders will allow ministry to be ongoing. New Believers in MexicoCHARLIE and ROBIN JANNEY work in a heavily populated area of Aguascalientes, Mexico, where there are problems with drug addiction, violence, and abuse. Through evangelism projects, Charlie and Robin have begun five Bible study groups in homes and a children’s club on Saturday mornings. Many in these small groups have accepted Christ, thanks in part to your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program. Join the Janneys in praying that a new church will begin in this area as these small groups come together for celebration. Also, rejoice with Robin at the success of a women’s retreat held this past year. A total of 56 women, including those seeking spiritual answers, attended. Pray for these new believers in Mexico and for Charlie and Robin this week. STATEMENT: The New Testament supports growth in Christlikeness. All Christians are to grow in all areas of life. Growth in the grace and knowledge of Christ will have visible expressions. For many Christians, growth in giving is a tangible evidence of spiritual growth. Starting Home ChurchesApproximately 11 million Jat Sikhs live in the northwestern state of Punjab in India. Less than one-half of one percent of them are followers of Jesus. In July of 2006, IRENE WAYNE* began discipling Jaspreet Kaur.* Because there is no church in their village, this family has had to travel great distances to worship with other believers. Irene visited with them to discuss the possibility of a house church. Jaspreet didn’t realize that she could start a church with only a small group. The family is excited to start a church in their home. Pray that Jaspreet’s family will start a healthy church that will reproduce many times over among the Jat Sikhs. * Names changed for security reasonsThe preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Large Mission Field in PennsylvaniaLARRY and MELYNDA SNYDER serve in the Harrisburg/Hershey region of South Central Pennsylvania as church planters. In a state with some 15 million residents, only four million claim a relationship with Christ. The Snyders understand that their task is great, and they are thankful that they can count on your prayers and your support through the Cooperative Program to assist them in fulfilling their mission. They have adopted a team approach to church planting and are working to guide Living Legacy Church to be part of a church planting movement where Christians are fully equipped and passionate to go and make disciples. Pray that this church will be healthy and growing. STATEMENT: Giving has always been an expectation of God for His people. Christian giving, however, is for a larger purpose than when the Israelites gave a tithe. They gave out of duty; we give to reach the lost for Christ.
