Church Planters in West AfricaSince October of 2006, MARK and PARKER PHILLIPS have served as church planter apprentices among the Songhai people group of Niger, West Africa. After completing four months of French language study, they are working with a tutor to learn the Songhai language. They are busy building relationships with the people they live among and are seizing opportunities to share the Gospel. Mark and Parker appreciate your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. This week, remember them in your prayers and ask God to give them increased opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Florence Baptist AssociationCoordinating mission and ministry projects among 37 churches of the Florence Baptist Association in South Carolina takes a significant amount of LOUANNE STEWART’s time. The reward is worth it: the opportunity to change lives with the power of the Gospel. Recipients whose lives are directly affected by the various projects and volunteers who develop a passion for a lifestyle of missions are the legacy that comes from her efforts. You are part of these efforts and the fruit they bear as you faithfully support the Cooperative Program. Pray for Louanne and her husband, EDDIE, as they mobilize churches, work with volunteers, and invest their lives in ministry in South Carolina. Showing Love in Their HomeWAYNE and KAY LOWE* have established a presence among the Kurdish people. Kay works with several families to provide health advice, and God has done incredible things. When a hospital denied treatment to a severely dehydrated baby because they couldn’t insert an IV, the mother brought the baby to the Lowes’ home. Through prayer and liquid gelatin, Wayne and Kay were able to help the child become strong enough to nurse again from his mother. Remember the Lowes in prayer as they continue to seek ways to share the Good News through helping others. * Names changed for security reasons STATEMENT: God calls our people to be His messengers: preachers, teachers, missionaries, and other kinds of servants. In Jesus’ teachings, ministry is never separated from financial support. Giving to our church supports the ministers and the ministries. Spreading the Word Across BrazilAs strategy coordinators for the interior of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, STEVE and MICHELLE RIDDLE research the most effective means to reach the Gaucho people for Christ. Last year, Steve and Michelle traveled to more than 20 locations meeting with leaders to find locations for new work, to prepare people for ministry, encourage the multiplication of churches, and train many in the work of evangelism. Hundreds of Bibles have been distributed, and new Bible studies have sprung up, resulting in many new believers. Your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program is spreading the Word of God across Brazil. Pray for the Riddles and for new believers to have a burden to reach out to their lost neighbors. South America is the focus region for the 2008 Lottie Moon offering theme “GO TELL the story of Jesus.” STATEMENT: It has always been true of God’s people: When God reveals a need, His people give willingly. Giving a tithe is appropriate; many of us can give even more as God leads. World ChangersAfter taking a youth group to a World Changers project and becoming involved in the leadership aspect of this mission experience, JON HODGE knew God was leading him into missions. Today, he serves as a national missionary for student volunteer mobilization. Jon is responsible for the logistics of more than a dozen World Changers projects in five states. World Changers provides youth opportunities to meet physical and spiritual needs through hands-on missions projects. Pray for Jon and his wife, LINDA, as they invest themselves in the lives of young people. STATEMENT: How does wealth keep a person out of the Kingdom of heaven? Wealth replaces God as the most important thing in a person’s life. It is not impossible for a rich person to enter heaven; it just requires more discipline. Faithful, generous giving is good discipline for all of us. Sharing the True Kingdom of GodBeing a church planter strategist in the Salt Lake Valley in Utah has many challenges. The area is home to 1.7 million people, and only three percent have a relationship with Jesus. ANDY and JOANNA ROBERSON eagerly embrace the challenges in a state that boasts the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Many resources are needed to engage those living in Utah with the truth of who Jesus is and why He came. This week, take a moment to remember the Robersons in your prayers as they advance the true Kingdom of God. Pray for partnerships that will encourage the work. Ezra 1:5-6 Then the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites—everyone whose heart God had moved—prepared to go up and build the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. 6 All their neighbors assisted them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with valuable gifts, in addition to all the freewill offerings. Collegiate Churches in HarrisonburgDAVID and SHIRLEY PROFFITT’s vision for church planting started with their son, Aaron, whose desire to begin a ministry at James Madison University transitioned into church planting. David and Aaron started Aletheia Church, the first collegiate church to begin in Harrisonburg. Currently the Proffitts serve as missionaries in Richmond, Virginia, where they started the Aletheia Campus/Student Organization at Virginia Commonwealth University. With your prayers and commitment to the Cooperative Program, they hope to launch a new church out of this organization. Pray for the Proffitts as they use this faith-based student organization to cross cultural, international, and generational barriers to share Christ and raise up a new generation of on-mission Christians. (For more on David and Shirley Proffitt, see Baptist Press Article dated 3/6/08) Acts 20:35 In every way I've shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive. Evangelical ImmigrantsOver the past 10 years, the number of evangelical churches in Spain has doubled, due to the arrival of many evangelical immigrants from other areas of the world. For many years, DAVID and KELLY ROGERS have been praying for more laborers for the harvest, and they believe God is answering those prayers in an unexpected way. David and Kelly want these immigrants to share the Gospel and start new churches throughout Spain – reaching both native Spaniards and newly arrived immigrants. They excitedly watch as a number of believers latch on to these ideas and begin to put them into practice. These evangelical immigrants are receiving training in evangelism and church planting. Pray for David, Kelly, and for those receiving the training as they reach out to the lost across Spain. 2 Corinthians 8:4-5 They urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will. Mission Service Corps MissionariesA 25th wedding anniversary trip to New England deepened the desire for DEWEY and KAThIE Aikens to extend their missions involvement beyond their North Carolina home. Today, they serve as Mission Service Corps missionaries managing the Calef House and Retreat Center in Vermont. This center houses mission teams assisting Vermont churches and ministries. As staff members of the Green Mountain Baptist Association, Dewey and Kathie are active in equipping and encouraging churches and leaders to reach the lost living in the state. Your gifts given through the Cooperative Program empower the Aikenses as they seek to reach Vermonters with the Good News of Christ. They would appreciate your prayers this week. (For more on Dewey and Kathie Aikens, see Baptist Press Article dated 3/3/08) STATEMENT: Despite great difficulties, the Macedonian Christians found a way to support ministries beyond their local community. Your Prayers Will Make A DifferenceAs director of missions for the Siskiyou Baptist Association in southern Oregon, ALAN DAWS assists and resources its 14 churches and missions in starting new churches, developing leaders, and helping existing churches be healthy. Only 20 percent of the people in the association’s area claim to be affiliated with any religious group. This is an overwhelming task, but Alan and his wife, RAETTA, know with your prayers, they can impact those living in Southern Oregon with the Gospel. Pray for Alan as he leads the churches in the association to reach many lost people for Christ. STATEMENT: Our stewardship is revealed in all areas of our lives. Eddie and Janice in MozambiqueEDDIE and JANICE RAY are strategy facilitators in northern Mozambique. Recently, the Rays received training on a new church planting approach which included a witnessing tool called Creation to Christ. The next day, Eddie was feeling ill and nearly stayed inside, but he didn’t. As he walked through the marketplace, he talked with a couple of young men about the Gospel, but they showed little interest. Still feeling quite ill, Eddie sat under a shade tree. Soon, a young man approached Eddie, saying, “My name is Bafana; you must tell me about God.” After Eddie shared, Bafana prayed to receive Christ. Eddie learned that when you get up, go out and seek the people, God will send unanticipated opportunities. This week, please pray for the Rays and for many more opportunities to share Jesus in northern Mozambique. STATEMENT: During Paul’s brief visit with the leaders in the church at Ephesus, he reminded them of three necessary principles for growth as Christian stewards: salvation in Christ, living and serving unselfishly, and discovering that real happiness in living is in giving. Prayer Walking Volunteers Reap HarvestWhen LOUIE and ELIZABETH RODGERS* arrived in the Pacific Rim, they knew of no believers. They have since discovered 20 Christians among primarily rural people groups. Last year, volunteer teams prayer walked over 1,000 miles throughout villages. Most of the locals had never heard about Jesus, but many allowed the team to pray for them. During one prayer walk, Louie and Elizabeth befriended Maung* and his family. Each time they visited his home, they told a Bible story, and on their last visit, Louie and Elizabeth gave Maung and his family a Bible – the first Bible in the entire village. Reaching the lost and spreading God’s Word are the fruits of your participation in the Cooperative Program. Pray with the Rodgerses that many more people will receive the Word and be saved. * Names changed for security reasons Romans 13:6-7 And for this reason you pay taxes, since the [authorities] are God's public servants, continually attending to these tasks. Pioneer Baptist AssociationThe biggest need in the Pioneer Baptist Association in West Virginia is for people to invest their lives in church planting that all may hear the Gospel. BERNARD TOPPINGS serves as the director of missions for the association, which has 13 churches and 5 missions. Bernard and his wife, NELLA, pray that God will lead them to the places He wants churches to be planted and the people to plant them. The Pioneer Baptist Association is small in number, but with your prayers and support, the Toppingses know they can have a huge impact in the lives of lost people living in West Virginia. Take a moment to pray for Bernard, Nella, and the churches of the Pioneer Baptist Association. Peru's Aymara PeopleNestled in the Andes Mountains, Peru’s Aymara people are animists. They eke out a living as farmers, paying offerings to spirits to ensure their harvest. Many believe their spirit will inhabit a mountain when they die. Few have a personal relationship with Christ. RICK and KELLY MARTINEZ serve among the Aymara. Empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit, they use Bible studies and storying to share the Gospel. Churches have been started in two Aymara villages, but hundreds more remain without a witness. Pray for the Martinezes to be invited into more Aymara villages and that Aymara believers would develop a vision for sharing the Gospel with their own people. South America is the focus region for the 2008 Lottie Moon offering theme “GO TELL the story of Jesus.” Ecclesiastes 5:10 The one who loves money is never satisfied with money, and whoever loves wealth [is] never [satisfied] with income. Volunteer Teams Making A DifferenceALLEN and LAURELLE STOUDENMIRE coordinate and lead volunteer teams from the United States to the least evangelized areas of Guatemala. Local churches and volunteers first saturate an area with prayer walking. Then, they distribute materials such as the Gospel of Luke and cassette tapes of New Testament stories door to door, sharing personal testimonies of how God has changed lives. Teams also pray for the needs of the families and encourage home Bible studies. The local pastors and church leaders follow up with new believers – starting Bible studies in homes and then combining the studies into larger fellowship groups. Through this method, Allen and Laurelle are seeing many people come to know Christ. Thank you for your support through the Cooperative Program that is reaching people door-to-door in Guatemala. Pray for the Stoudenmires this week. STATEMENT:The Scripture says that we can honor God with our material possessions and that we are to give God first place in our giving. As we face a new year, let’s resolve to obey that biblical truth. Let us honor God with our money and make giving to Him through our church a priority. Church Planters in WisconsinPlanting and developing churches in southern Wisconsin, missionaries MARK and DEBBIE MILLMAN are praying that God will continue to send new church planters to the state. Mark is the director of missions and church planting strategist for the Central Baptist Association, providing direction and leadership to 13 churches scattered over 17 counties that have a total population of 1.2 million people. There is very little evangelical presence in this area, but with your faithful participation through the Cooperative Program, the Millmans are able to impact those living throughout southern Wisconsin for Christ. Pray for ongoing encouragement and spiritual health for the association’s pastors and their families. STATEMENT: Material things are a vital part of life, but not the most vital. Though we often measure our self-worth by what we possess, wealth itself cannot bring genuine meaning to life. Using wealth, such as giving to God through one’s church, is how wealth adds meaning to life. Laramie County Community College A student’s day at Laramie County Community College is divided between work and school. This creates the need for a variety of methods that will engage students in hearing and responding to the Good News of Jesus Christ. AARON BELL serves as the Baptist Collegiate Ministry director. He and his wife, MELODY, want all 5,000 of the students to come to know Christ, which is no small task. Your commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program allows the Bells to spend time with students, which in turn opens opportunities for them to share the Gospel. Pray for student ministry leaders to be faithful and responsible in their commitment to share the Gospel. Ask the Lord to start a revival among the students attending Laramie County Community College. Mark 6:7-10 He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean spirits. 8 He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a walking stick: no bread, no traveling bag, no money in their belts. 9 They were to wear sandals, but not put on an extra shirt. 10 Then He said to them, "Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place. Divine AppointmentsAfter hearing that the small community of La Rinconada, Ecuador, had an interest in hearing the Gospel, Darrell Musick and some national coworkers drove a vehicle as far as the terrain allowed. When they arrived, the two women sitting on the porch were open to conversation. Darrell shared with the women the newly recorded creation story in the Quichua language. One of the women tearfully said that she and others had been praying for a church in their community. Join Darrel and his wife, ROGENE, in praying for more “divine appointments” to share the Gospel with those God has prepared to hear His message. Thank you for praying for Darrell, Rogene, and the people of Ecuador. A Passion for BrazilPHIL and DONYA KESLER spread their passion for missions in Brazil, thanks in part to our commitment to putting love in action through the Cooperative Program. The Keslers’ team recruits, mobilizes, trains, and facilitates the sending of Brazilian missionaries to the field in Brazil or in other countries. Through an initiative called Churches Multiplying Churches, Phil and his team also partner U.S. churches with people groups in Brazil who have little access to the Gospel. Join Phil and Donya as they pray that, through U.S. church involvement and national efforts, they will see the unreached peoples of Brazil come to faith in Christ, as well as see new churches planted and multiplying rapidly. Showing Love Though ActionsSTEPHEN EDDLEMAN was participating with his three teenagers in a World Changers project when he answered God’s call to missions. World Changers gave him the opportunity to see how showing love through actions often provides opportunities to share Christ’s love with others. Today, Stephen serves as a national missionary working with World Changers. Our commitment to reaching people by working alongside sister Southern Baptist churches helps Stephen as he organizes logistics for World Changers and Power Plant projects, both of which provide hands-on missions experience for students. If You Do Not Pray, We Can Not StayERIC and RAMONA REESE work to make Christ known among the poor living in the hillside slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They navigate around drug lords, vote-hungry politicians, and witchdoctors as they share the Gospel. One misstep can prohibit them from entering an area for an indefinite time. As they prayer walk through these dangerous communities, they ask God to show them the houses He has prepared for them to enter. The Reeses also post Scriptures on the most used entrances to these communities. Their prayer slogan is: “If you do not pray, we cannot stay.” Please take a moment to pray for Eric, Ramona, and those living in the slums in Brazil. Travelers and The Bridge Fellowship ChurchLOUIS and SHELLEY SPEARS learned about a group called Travelers when one of them started coming to the church Louis pastors, The Bridge Fellowship Church in Mesa, Arizona. Travelers are called that because they don’t stay very long in one place. They even speak a kind of language of their own, using words that other people do not understand. While their geographical location may change, God always knows where they are and what they need: a relationship with Him. Your faithful support through the Cooperative Program enables the Spearses to reach out to this group who perceive non-Travelers as outsiders. Pray that the Spearses will be welcomed by this group, and that many will come to know Christ through their efforts. STATEMENT: It is right to be thankful for the many blessings we receive. Joy at the University of HiloHaving been an international student herself, missionary Joy Turner knows what it’s like to feel lost geographically and emotionally on a college campus far from home. Impacting the Lost in ColumbiaFERNANDO and BRENDA LARZABAL work to mobilize International Mission Board personnel and national churches to reach out to the 85 indigenous groups of Colombia who have yet to respond to the Gospel. The Larzabals are also involved with a university student center. These students come to the city to study but have poor academics, few resources, little technology experience, and limited family support. As the center meets these academic and physical needs, the students often become open to spiritual matters. Thus far, more than 20 students have responded to the Gospel. You are impacting the lost in Colombia and around the world as you pray for and give through the Cooperative Program. Pray for the Larzabals and these students this week. South America is the focus region for the 2008 Lottie Moon offering theme “GO TELL the story of Jesus.” STATEMENT: Paul speaks about lifestyle in these verses. While Christians and non-Christians share much of life in common, there is a big difference in the desire to honor God and serve others, as Christians experience God’s grace. Praying Specifically For ThemLARRY and NANCY JACKSON partner with churches from the U.S. to reach those living in northern Peru. Approximately 22 churches are working with 12 Peruvian people groups. Each church commits to visit their adopted people group three to four times a year for four years. When congregations from the U.S. come to Peru, Larry asks them to take note of the names of the pastors and town officials in their area. These congregations then pray specifically for them. Larry and Nancy can attest to many instances when barriers were broken down and lives changed due to prayer. Your prayers and your participation through the Cooperative Program are making a difference. Thank you for praying for Larry and Nancy this week. South America is the focus region for the 2008 Lottie Moon offering theme “GO TELL the story of Jesus.” John 3:16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Transforming Communities in the Houston AreaMissionary MomentIn Houston, Texas, the ministries of Gano, Fletcher, and Joy mission centers reach out to the impoverished communities in the inner city. They also are training ground for summer and semester missionaries who experience first-hand what it means to be a missionary who crosses cultural and language barriers. Missionary GINGER SMITH directs the work of the centers, the goal of which is to “transform broken and neglected communities in the Houston area.” Pray for this ministry and for summer and semester missionaries to serve in impoverished communities all across North America. STATEMENT: Christmas is the celebration of the greatest display of stewardship known to mankind. This is God’s stewardship of salvation. Our faithful giving to God through the church is a continuing celebration of God’s gift to us in His Son. Baptist Campus Ministry in IllinoisMissionary MomentA campus evangelism missionary at Illinois State, SERENA BUTLER has led Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM) students to do creative outreach such as handing out toaster pastries to students rushing to classes every Tuesday morning. Each pastry is labeled with a Bible verse, or as one student called them, “a God saying.” The label also contains BCM meeting and contact information. Between 300 and 350 toaster pastries are given out each week. This is just one creative example of how you are reaching out to people of all ages in your state and across the country as you participate in the Cooperative Program. Pray that this and other outreach efforts will provide opportunities to effectively share Christ on campus. Matthew 2:11 Entering the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and falling to their knees, they worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Quilombolas of BrazilMissionary MomentThe Quilombolas of Brazil are descendents of fugitive African slaves. Many ran away to isolated villages to restart their lives, but their customs, steeped in superstition, remain intact. Many of the villages are so remote that they remained unknown to the outside world until recently. KEITH and DEBORAH JEFFERSON work to reach the 2,842 Quilombolas villages throughout Brazil. In two villages where there were no Christians, two small churches now worship. These believers have left their ancestral religion to worship the one true God. Pray for the Quilombola people and for coworkers to join the Jeffersons as they share with these who have little or no access to the Gospel. South America is the focus region for the 2008 Lottie Moon offering theme “GO TELL the story of Jesus.” STATEMENT: These wise men traveled a long way to deliver their gifts in person. How fortunate we are to have a workable plan through which our gifts go directly to the need. Let us give with confidence that soon our gifts will become a blessing. Your Commitment is Making a DifferenceMissionary MomentJustin* is a Muslim teacher in a village near SHAD and MICHELLE SPANNAGEL and their children, Hannah and Haven. As church planters among the Western Fulani in Niger, West Africa, the Spannagels visited Justin and his family each week, sharing the Good News through stories. When the rainy season came, roads to Justin’s village became impassable. But not even muddy, rut-filled roads can stop the Gospel from spreading as the Spannagels use a four-wheel-drive truck to visit the village. Your love for the Lord and commitment to reaching people through the Cooperative Program enable Shad and Michelle to visit Justin and his family on a regular basis. Justin accepted Jesus as his Savior and has a burden for his family and his village. Pray that they will hear and accept Jesus. * Name changed for security reasons STATEMENT: The new year brings new opportunities for us to practice our faith through our giving. Our giving provides the resources for us to help reach the lost for Christ. Let’s resolve to work to be able to grow in our giving this year for God’s glory. Wolof People Group, Senegal, West AfricaMissionary MomentJEFF and RISA GRACE balance business office responsibilities with participation on the Wolof people group team in Senegal, West Africa. One day their language tutor, Ibu, couldn’t teach because his teeth were bothering him. The prayers and suggestions of his Seriñ (Islamic religious teacher) didn’t help. Jeff asked if he could pray for Ibu. Most Muslims believe that Jesus’ name is powerful, so Ibu was willing to receive prayer. The next day, he returned to class pain free. Jeff and Risa pray that Ibu will realize that only Jesus offers true healing. Cooperative Program gifts from churches like yours are impacting people in West Africa who do not have a personal relationship with Christ. This week, pray for Ibu to be saved, and pray that God will continue to use Jeff and Risa to spread His love. Psalm 39:6 Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
