Living his dreamBy Jimbo Collins for the Times-Tribune.If you are one of those fans who travels to away games and listens to the local radio broadcast on your hand-held radio while watching the game, then you have probably heard “Country” Earl Owens – the “Voice of Clay County.” “Country” Earl Owens Owens is a DJ for Rock 105.7 in Manchester and has been involved in radio for 17 years. He grew up in Manchester and was a student at Clay County when the Tigers and Lady Tigers won state championships in the 1980s. The DJ was there when the legend of Richie Farmer was born. Farmer led his team to the Sweet Sixteen finals two years in a row, capturing one championship. “Richie graduated the year before I did,” Owens said. “I graduated with Russ Farmer, Box Rollins, Roger Simms and those guys. We were all seniors together.” When asked how he became the “Voice of Clay County” Owens responded with just one word – “Luck”. “The guy who normally did it at the time was sick,” Owens said. “Our Tiger team (boys) was at the WYMT Mountain Classic and our Lady Tigers were at the Fayette County Invitational Tournament and he knew that I was chomping at the bit and praying my dream would come true and I would be the voice of Clay County one day. “He got sick and the guy who helps him was in Hindman doing the WYMT Mountain Classic,” he added. “I was kind of the last resort to go to Lexington to cover the Lady Tigers and since ’91, the fourth game of the season, I have been doing it.” Owens said he has many great memories since he began broadcasting Clay County sports. “We had a couple of games in the state tournament that have been memorable,” Owens said. “We had a war against Central Hardin. I think that was in 1992.” “Of course, the constant battles with Jackson County and Rockcastle County in our own district over the years,” he added. “I’ve got a feeling that Friday night against Whitley County will be one of those type games that we will remember for a long time.” “Country” Earl relishes his job as the “Voice of Clay County” and wouldn’t trade it for any other job. “I love my job,” Owens said. “It was a life-long dream come true for me. I think my first memory of basketball was in 1977 with Clay County playing Lone Jack at Lone Jack. Ever since 1977, I have thought that this is exactly what I want in my life. After 17 years in radio, I still love it. I am thankful to have a chance to live my dream.” Read the entire article at....TheTimesTribune.com
