Family Adventure Quest Offered In 2009 By Kentucky State ParksThe Kentucky State Parks will again be offering the Family Adventure Quest in 2009 and the theme has a presidential flavor. The Family Adventure Quest – a series of challenges and quests that families complete by traveling and taking pictures across Kentucky – is focused on the bicentennial celebration of Abraham Lincoln, who was born in Kentucky in 1809. This year’s challenges will take you and your team across the state to Kentucky State Parks and historic sites, as well as the Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site to explore and learn about our sixteenth President’s ties to Kentucky. While some challenges will simply require seeking answers through park visits or web research, many will require use of a digital camera to show your team along your journey. The prize for entries that answer all 25 questions correctly is an $85 gift card good at state parks. For answering 20 questions correctly, you can receive a $50 gift card. There is a $15 registration fee, which will get you an information packet with the questions, a commemorative day pack and a $5 gift certificate to the Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site in Hodgenville. Registration forms are available at www.parks.ky.gov (Look for the Family Adventure Quest logo) as well as photos of past year’s participants. Take Precautions with Holiday LightingFor many Kentuckians, the holiday season is an opportunity to decorate the home in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Taking basic precautions with decorations will help ensure that a fire won’t ruin your holiday, says Kentucky State Fire Marshal William Swope. Lighted candles evoke memories of holiday celebrations of the past. When properly used, candles are safe, but residents should be cautious. “Never leave a lighted candle unattended,” Swope advised. “Before you go to sleep, always extinguish a lighted candle. And never leave the home with candles burning.” Christmas trees are, of course, another decorating fixture at this time of year. Christmas trees cause about 200 house fires a year around the country, Swope noted. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers these safety tips: • Never use lighted candles on a tree. • Unplug tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. • Keep the tree at least 3 feet away from a heat source, like a fireplace. • Keep little children and pets away from wiring and lights. • Use lights that carry the label of an independent testing laboratory. • Keep a fresh tree well-watered throughout the season. Dispose of the fresh tree after four weeks. • When using an artificial tree, make sure it is listed as flame-retardant. More information and tips are available at: www.nfpa.orgThe State Fire Marshal’s Office is part of the Public Protection Cabinet. The preceding press release was from

Pine Mountain First Tee Chapter Receives National RecognitionThe First Tee program at Pine Mountain State Resort Park has received national recognition for its efforts to provide golf and character education to youths. The First Tee program is an initiative dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop through golf and character education. The First Tee program emphasizes nine core values that are connected with the game of golf. They are: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment. There are four First Tee chapters in Kentucky. The Pine Mountain Chapter was honored March 1 in San Jose, Calif., with an Ace ZONE Award – standing for Zeroing in On Network Excellence. The Pine Mountain chapter had the highest point total of all 206 chapters across the country and four foreign countries. The award is given for efficient operations, programming and participant involvement. The chapter, now in its eighth year, serves about 250 youths during the summer at the state park at Pineville. The children are from Bell, Harlan, Whitley and Knox counties in Kentucky and Claiborne County, Tenn., and Lee County, Virginia. “This award is a great tribute to the volunteers who work with these kids,” said Jerry Shoffner, the PGA professional at Wasioto Winds Golf Course at Pine Mountain. “Our biggest thrill is to be able to provide a positive influence in the lives of these young people from our community.” Pine Mountain was also honored when one of five World Golf Foundation Chairman’s Awards went to Jan Gann, who is a seasonal employee at Wasioto Winds and is the administrator for The First Tee chapter. The award is given for dedication and work for the local chapter and the national First Tee organization. “I was honored to receive this award for both myself and the staff of The First Tee Pine Mountain. Even though this award is given to an individual it represents the cooperative effort of everyone in the organization,” said Gann, a volunteer since 2001. She is a retired Kentucky Utilities employee who lives in Pineville with her husband Kenny. Eagle Ridge Golf Course at Yatesville Lake State Park, located in eastern Kentucky, and Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park, located in south central Kentucky were ranked #6 and #9 as “Best In State” by Golf Digest Magazine. In addition, Wasioto Winds Golf Course at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville, My Old Kentucky Home State Park at Bardstown and Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park at Burkesville were rated four stars by Golf Digest for “Best Places to Play” in 2008-09. These courses were evaluated by approximately 20,000 Golf Digest readers on a five point scale. “These awards once again validate the quality and conditioning that patrons have come to expect from the Kentucky State Parks Golf Trail Courses,” said Dan Strohmeier, PGA Director of Golf for the Department of Parks. The newest addition to the Kentucky State Parks Golf Trail courses is General Burnside Island State Park near Somerset -- a newly renovated course designed by Brian Ault. The course re-opened in May, 2008, and features zoysia fairways and tees with bent grass greens. The course measures 6,394 yards from the back tees and is on an island surrounded by Lake Cumberland. Ault also designed the courses at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park and Hidden Cove at Grayson Lake State Park, both recognized nationally by Golf Digest. Kentucky State Parks are also offering a new golf package this year – the Chip Shot. The Chip Shot package includes 18-holes of golf and lodging with rates at $79 per person per night April through October. The parks continue to offer the popular all inclusive Tee’s & Zzz’s golf packages at resort parks which include golf, lodging, breakfast and dinner and gift card. Rates are $109 per person per night from April through October. The best golf in Kentucky is now available at all 19 courses operated by the Kentucky Department of Parks. For 2009, the Kentucky Golf Trail is again offering a “trail card” that provides unlimited paid green fees for the cardholder. The trail card fees have been restructured and now include the daily pass holder play fees. They are sold at all state park golf courses and are valid through Dec. 31, 2009. Cards start at $475 for senior players (62 and older).
