KSP London Post Gets New Crime-Fighting Tool
(London, Ky.) -- Lt. John Yates (right), of Kentucky State Police Post 11 in London, visited Frankfort recently to pick up a new Crime Scene Response Vehicle (CSRV) from Gov. Steve Beshear (center) and KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer (left). The Ford Super Duty Truck is equipped with everything needed for on-scene crime analysis including a generator, trace evidence analysis and a latent fingerprint processing machine. The CSRV will expedite investigations by providing detectives with greater storage capacity and state-of-the-art tools to collect all possible evidence at the scene. This enhanced capability will assist in prosecuting criminals by providing additional visual evidence that will lead to stiffer penalties. No public funds were used to purchase the truck. KSP utilized Asset Forfeiture Funds to acquire the $30,000 vehicle. These funds are from the sale of assets such as real property, vehicles, vessels, aircraft and jewelry that are seized by state, local or federal law enforcement during criminal investigations. "Positioning these vehicles at all KSP posts will be a valuable asset to KSP as well as an additional resource for local law enforcement," said Gov. Beshear. "Combining state and local resources, especially during difficult economic times, will provide the Commonwealth with more efficient and effective crime solving methods that will result in decreased criminal activity in our state." The preceding press release was from Kentucky State Police Post 11 in London which serves the following Kentucky Counties: Clay, Laurel, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Wayne, and Whitley.

Welcome to Kentucky! Well, Maybe Not.....
(Williamsburg, Ky.) -- On November 10th, at 12:06 p.m., Tpr Raymond Foley U/468 had responded to a possible wanted person complaint at the Kentucky Welcome Center at the 1 mile marker on I-75 in Whitley County. Tpr. Foley located that subject and was interviewing him when he heard two gun shots in another location at the rest area. He looked for the source of the gun shots and saw one subject, Tommy Lee Jones, of Lafollette, Tn., who was apparently wounded, running from a line of parked tractor-trailer units. Tpr. Foley continued to investigate and located another subject, Gary A. Smith, of Cleveland, Oh., carrying what he believed to be some type of weapon. He challenged, disarmed, and detained Mr. Smith. Subsequent investigation, including nterviews with both Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones revealed the following. Both accounts match in content and are consistent with witness statements. Both Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones were drivers of separate vehicles northbound I-75, arguing by CB Radio over allegations of moving violations. Both Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones agreed to stop at the rest stop to settle their differences physically. Both parties exited with sticks in their pockets. When they met, Mr. Jones struck Mr. Smith in the head with his stick. Mr. Smith sustained an injury to his ear and pulled a handgun from his pocket and fired two rounds toward Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones sustained minor, non-life-threatening, injury. Mr. Jones was transported to the hospital in Corbin by Whitley County EMS. Mr. Smith was released at the scene. The investigation is continuing by Detective Donald Wilson U/956.
