Harlan Daily Enterprise Russell ready for new role as Knox Central head coach by JOHN MIDDLETON
Scott Russell was unparalleled on the football field during his playing days at Evarts. Now, the 1991 Mr. Football award winner will attempt to match those achievements as the head coach at Knox Central. Russell was named the Panther’s new coach in the offseason after Wayne Mills left to take the head job at Bell County. While the Panthers were successful during Mills’ tenure, Russell said he plans to put his own stamp on the program. The Panthers won 10 games and advanced to the regional finals last season before falling to Bell County. bleedbluekentucky.com Interview with 2013 OL Jacob Hyde of Clay County by Derek Jacob Hyde
Last night I caught up with Offensive Lineman Jacob Hyde. Hyde lives in Manchester, Kentucky and attends Clay County High School. Hyde is in the class of 2013. He told me that the recruiting process is going well for him right now. He currently has one offer, which is from the University of Kentucky. He is also getting interest from Alabama, Nebraska, Louisville, and Tennessee. Hyde attended a showcase at UK last month and also participated at NUC100 (National Underclassmen Combine). He won the Freshman Overall MVP at the NUC in Lexington. This year he wants to help his team win district and have a shot at the state title. Hyde is currently 6-2 and weighs 310 pounds. He runs a 5.56 40 yard dash. Hyde is being recruited by UK Coach Greg Nord. Thanks to Jacob for taking the time to do an interview with BBK. He is certainly a prospect to watch, as he has two more years of high school football to play. Clay County will be at Whitley County September 16.
TheTimesTribune.com Whitley County football coach Jim Black being quiet about starters By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
The Whitley County Colonels have a lot of starting spots to fill after losing 90 percent of their offense from last year’s team, but to find out who will be filling those roles you might have to attend a game as coach Jim Black is running a top secret operation. Whitley County’s strong point should be their offensive line. Several of the players up front have played valuable minutes for the Colonels. The Colonels will not have much time to adjust to their new roles because of a tough schedule that starts out with Russell County. They will face Bell County, Somerset, Boyle County, Rockcastle County, Lynn Camp and Clay County in their non-district schedule. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1443108428/Top-Secret

TheTimesTribune.com Knox Central picked to win newly-aligned district By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
These are exciting times if you’re a Knox Central Panther football fan. The Panthers are ushering in a new era as first-year coach and former Mr. Football Scotty Russell takes over a team that is being picked by many to win their newly-aligned district. Knox Central returns the core of the nucleus that turned in a 10-3 season in 2010. Quarterback Johnathan Barger returns, along with Division I prospect Jeffrey Canady, and not to mention a solid offensive and defensive line. A newly-aligned district has a lot of people buzzing that Knox Central has a good chance to capture the school’s first-ever district championship. Knox Central’s new district will contain some familiar faces with Rockcastle County, Clay County and Russell County forming the new district. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1452097809/High-Expectations

Clay County will open the 20011 football season at Garrard County August 19
centralkynews.com Despite the numbers, Garrard County Football coach Scenters optimistic By HAL MORRIS
His team may look a little different — and smaller — than expected, but Garrard County coach Mark Scenters sees no reason not to keep the same expectations for his team. Two players — lineman J.K. Howard and running back Jadarious Brown — transferred to Danville shortly before preseason practice started. Garrard also lost some players to academics and others to attrition once preseason conditioning started. But Scenters has not panicked. He simply upped the conditioning since more players may have to go both ways this season, and he’s looked for some younger players to plug in. What a smaller team can do, Scenters said, is give the team a strong core. And he likes the core of players he has coming back, especially at the skill positions. Junior quarterback Billy Abney has started every game since his freshman season and threw for 1,382 yards and 17 touchdowns with eight interceptions and ran for three more scores last year. The Golden Lions return their top two rushers in seniors Cory Wilson (1,090 yards, nine TDs) and Markell Hayes (776 yards, 11 TDs). Speedster Hayes also had 23 catches for 264 yards and four touchdowns and scored and 15 total touchdowns. Scenters he can be used in several positions. Garrett Caudill, J.T. Lyons and Cody Brown, a transfer from Georgia, could also see time in the backfield. Tyler McCoy had a huge season last year, catching 31 passes for 733 yards and nine touchdowns, and is expected to have similar numbers this year. The Garrard coach is also counting on Austin Napier, who missed last year with a knee injury, to be a good possession receiver with big-play ability. The line is where Garrard was hit the hardest by losses, besides just Howard, when it comes to depth. But Scenters is counting on returning starters Layne Marsee, Ronnie Saylor and Dylan Worley to step up. Bradley Rector, Shae Garcia, Dakota Hisle and Lee Collins are all expected to get their shot at playing time. The Garrard defense gave up 34 points per game last season, and Scenters said it continues to be a point of emphasis. Leading tackler Bret Dowell (78 tackles) is back at linebacker. www.centralkynews.com/amnews/sports/highschool/amn-preview-2011-despite-the-numbers-garrard-coach-mark-scenters-optimistic-20110802,0,2715056.story

madisoncourier.com Former Clay County assistant coach now the head football coach at Trimble County Mark Campbell, Sports Editor
Trimble County interim football coach William Blair (center) kept it light at the team’s annual photo day Monday.
Although he grew up in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, when new Raiders football coach William Blair was looking for a place to continue his coaching career he followed his heart to Trimble County High School. On one hand there was Blair's love of a woman - his fiancée is from Louisville and he wanted to be closer to her. On the other hand there was his love of small towns - and Bedford reminded Blair of his Rockcastle County hometown enough that it was love at first sight. Blair arrived at Trimble as the junior high coach but found himself elevated to interim varsity coach after the teaching position of former head coach Chris Collins was eliminated this year and Collins moved on. After playing in high school for Rockcastle County, Blair went to the University of Kentucky and was a long snapper for the Wildcats in the final year of the Guy Morris era (2002) and the first year of Rich Brooks' tenure (2003). After college, Blair went home to Rockcastle County where he served as a football assistant four years before going to Clay County one year as the defensive coordinator and then back to Rockcastle before leaving for Trimble. madisoncourier.com/main.asp?SectionID=18&SubSectionID=289&ArticleID=64470

Mike Fields' notebook Former Mr. Football Russell moving up to head coach at Knox Central By Mike Fields, Herald-Leader Staff writer
As a star running back at Evarts High School, Scott Russell always knew when to power inside, when to sprint outside and when to make a cut. That's how he rushed for 7,090 yards — then a state record — and why he was named Mr. Football in 1991. After 14 seasons as an assistant, the last eight at Knox Central, Russell is the Panthers' new head coach. He takes over for Wayne Mills, who left Knox Central to succeed Dudley Hilton at Bell County. Russell, who played college ball at Lees-McRae for one season before finishing his career at Union, is ready to make his mark at Knox Central. Reflecting on his days at Evarts (which was consolidated into Harlan County High School a few years ago), Russell said he didn't think his state rushing record would last long. Derek Homer of Fort Knox set a new mark (8,224 yards) in 1996. Four other have since eclipsed Russell's total. But Russell did manage to hang on to his high school sweetheart. He and his wife, Michelle, have three daughters — Meredith, Makenna and Madalyn. www.kentucky.com/2011/08/12/1842568/mike-fields-notebook-former-mr.html

lebanonenterprise.com Marion County football season set to begin Friday in Campbellsville
Marion County High School Head Football Coach Jeff Robbins is expecting this year to be different than any other year he’s been at MCHS. By returning six starters on offense and four on defense, most with at least two years of varsity experience, Robbins is looking forward to a successful season. The upcoming schedule for the Knights holds some daunting tasks. With four former state championship teams on the schedule, the Knights should be challenged on a regular basis. Eight of the ten teams on this year’s schedule finished at least two games above .500, and seven of those eight teams went at least the second round of the playoffs, according to Robbins. The Knights open up action this Friday night Aug. 19, when they take part in the Forcht Bank Bowl held at Campbellsville University. The Knights will take on Russell County at 8:30 p.m. The following Saturday night, Aug. 27, the Knights will host Clay County in the Heart of Kentucky Pigskin Classic at 8 p.m. www.lebanonenterprise.com/content/2011-football-season-set-begin-friday-campbellsville

The Clay County Tiger football team will travel to Garrard County Friday night to take on the Golden Lions in the "Hall of Fame Bowl". Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM
centralkynews.com Prep Football: Garrard will be tested by Clay in season opener [/b] LANCASTER — Clay County lost the bulk of its skill position players off last year’s squad, but Garrard County coach Mark Scenters said the Tigers also had a huge addition to the team with former Middlesboro coach Kenny Roark taking over as their coach. The Tigers were predominantly a throwing team under former coach Shannon Arnett, but Scenters expects Clay to stick to the ground and use its size up front to try to pound on the Lions. Clay‘s offense returns only senior, wide receiver-defensive back Joey Dezarn, from last year’s 8-4 squad. Dezarn caught 22 passes for 483 yards and four touchdowns and had four interceptions on defense. Additions have not been part of Garrard’s preseason after losing several players. What Garrard does have in its favor against Clay is the experience at the skill positions.
