Clay County Tiger Football 2011
The Clay County Tiger football team will host Johnson Central in the Appalachian Bowl Friday September 2.
WYMT Sports Mr. Football candidate closing in on state rushing record
In 2008, we started the football season with two quarterbacks looking to catch Tim Couch's state records in two different categories. This year we have a running back sneaking up on the state's all time rushing record. Johnson Central running back and Mr. Football candidate J.J. Jude currently has 5,498 rushing yards. That's 2,726 yards shy of the state record held by fort Knox's Derek Homer. The record of 8,224 yards has stood for 15 years. www.wkyt.com/wymtsports/headlines/Mr_Football_candidate_closing_in_on_state_rushing_record_127976748.html

WYMT Sports South Laurel Pigskin Preview
Our DQ Grill and Chill Pigskin Previews resumes with the South Laurel Cardinals who are using a winless 2010 as motivation to bounce back this season. South Laurel is eager to put 2010 behind them and move the program forward In 2011. After a winless season, there is a new attitude on this team and they expect that to carry over on the field. South has plenty of returning lineman this season. They expect boys up front to help get the skill position players in the open field and put points on the board. Cardinals Coach Larry Welch believes in his players. Welch wants them to have fun playing for the Red and Black but to also establish the winning tradition once again at South Laurel. The Cardinals will return to the gridiron in the Pioneer Bowl August 19th against Lynn Camp. www.wkyt.com/wymtsports/headlines/South_Laurel_Pigskin_Preview_128044093.html

Clay County Tiger Football 2011
Bell County will play Clay County at Tiger Stadium October 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
The Middlesboro Daily News Lexington Catholic holds off Bobcats in second half by Anthony Cloud, Staff Writer
LOG MOUNTAIN – It was a rainy night Friday as the Bell County Bobcats played a close game against the Lexington Catholic Knights. At one point there was close to a 45 minute delay for severe weather. After a second half comeback, the Bobcats fell short to the Knights by a score of 33-27. Bell drove down inside the LexCath 15 in the final minute, but were stopped on fourth down as the Knights held on. The Bobcats had most of their success on the ground. They put together a total of 423 yards on 60 attempts on the ground. Cory Davenport was the leading rusher for Bell County. He rushed for 258 yards and had a total of 2 touchdowns. Right behind Davenport was Jonathan Polly, who put up a total of 116 yards on the ground and a touchdown. It was all about the passing game for Lexington Catholic. Kyle Bolin went 11-20 through the air for a total of 216 yards. Read the entire article at: www.middlesborodailynews.com/view/full_story/15162440/article-Lex--Cath--holds-off-Bobcats-in-second-half New coach, same high expectations for Bell County Bobcats in 2011 by JAY COMPTON, Sports Editor
LOG MOUNTAIN — The coach Wayne Mills era officially kicked off tonight for Bell County and once again the Bobcats have their sights set on making a deep playoff run come November. There are plenty of other changes for the Bobcats this season, of course. Not only is Mills taking over for Dudley Hilton, who left Bell for the University of Pikeville after last season tied as the winningest high school coach in Kentucky history, the Bobcats also graduated 12 seniors that went a combined 52-4 over their high school careers. The losses were especially hard on defense where only two starters return. The biggest returning star for the Bobcats is senior running back Cory Davenport. He ran over over 1600 yards on just under 150 carries in 2010 and found the end zone 26 times. There is plenty of depth behind him in juniors Jonathan Polly and Ryan Collett who are expected to start as well in the Bell wishbone. Davenport will also serve as the punter with Brandon Spade handling kickoffs and freshman Hayden Gilbert place kicking. Bell has a new starting quarterback for 2011 in junior Corey Oslonian. He’s been the back-up the last tow years after playing the position in middle school and on the JV and freshman teams. Junior Brandon Spade is the new tight end. Mills said he’s had a great summer and has made himself much stronger over the off season. Another junior, Tyler Green will start at split end and the Bobcats have a god mix of other receivers that will see the field when they spread the field. The group includes senior Dakota Collett who has returned to the Bobcats after spending time away while his father travelled in the military, sophomore Justin Warwick, freshman Dylan Cox and junior Jeffrey Saylor. Three starters return along the offensive line, led by senior right tackle Caleb Carter, senior guard Brent Marsee and junior left tackle Jonathan Burnett. Junior Tyler Mills will also see time at guard along with senior Connor Gray. Junior Hunter Marcum is the new Bobcat center. Bell’s base defense is switching from the 6-2 to a 4-4, but operates on most of the same principals. Realignment has placed the Bobcats in Class 3A in a district with Corbin, Wayne County, Casey County and McCreary Central. The change put then in a region with the western part of the state and a deep playoff run will likely see the Bobcats playing games in Louisville and Paducah. One rival that’s not on the schedule this year is Knox Central where Mills coached the last eight years. He said the Bobcats will likely be playing the Panthers again in the near future. centralkynews.com Prep Football: Garrard tops Clay County 40-38 in 4 overtimes in Hall of Fame Bowl [/b] By HAL MORRIS
LANCASTER - The 500th game in Garrard County history may have been its longest and one of the wildest. Cory Wilson scored a touchdown and ran the two-point conversion in the fourth overtime Friday, then the Garrard defense stopped Clay County’s two-point conversion as the Golden Lions held on a 40-38 Hall of Fame Bowl win. Wilson ran for 109 yards and three touchdowns and Markell Hayes rushed for 89 yards for the Golden Lions, who rallied in the final minute of regulation to force overtime after losing their halftime lead. Clay scored on the first play of overtime on Joey Dezarn’s 9-yard run and quarterback Zack McGeorge added the conversion. Garrard answered when Wilson scored on a 3-yard run. He was stopped on the conversion, but Clay was called for a face mask and Wilson ran it in on the next play to make it 32-all. Both teams turned the ball over in the second overtime and neither team scored in the third. Garrard got the ball first in the fourth overtime and Wilson scored on a 2-yard run on fourth down, then blasted in for the conversion to make it 40-32. McGeorge also scored on fourth down on Clay’s next possession. But on the conversion try, Bradley Rector pressured George into throwing a low pass to give Garrard the win. The Garrard defense held the bigger Tigers to 121 yards rushing on 41 carries and outgained them 287-228. Garrard dominated the first half, outgaining Clay 175-29 and leading 16-0, but Clay stormed back to lead 24-16 thanks to two McGeorge touchdown runs. www.centralkynews.com/amnews/sports/highschool/amn-prep-football-garrard-tops-clay-county-4038-in-4-overtimes-in-hall-of-fame-bowl-20110820,0,2893328.story

The Times-Tribune South Laurel ends 11-game losing streak with win over Lynn Camp By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
South Laurel coach Larry Welch didn’t know what to expect coming into the opening game of Pioneer Bowl VI against Lynn Camp. His team entered the game riding an 11-game losing skid and Welch knew Friday’s match-up against the Class A Wildcats would be a good opportunity for his team to get its first win since a 42-13 win over Middlesboro in 2009. He was right. Welch’s Cardinals jumped out to a 27-0 lead and never looked back during their 34-7 win over Lynn Camp. David Mitchell’s Wildcats turned out to be their own worst enemies by committing five turnovers in the first half with three coming inside their own 30-yard line. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1699202267/Losing-skid-is-over The Sentinel-Echo Cardinals make short work of Lynn Camp By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
BARBOURVILLE—Not since Oct. 30, 2009 has the South Laurel football team enjoyed this feeling. It was 658 days ago that the Cardinals won at Middlesboro 42-13. They did not win again until Friday’s 34-7 decision over Lynn Camp in the Pioneer Bowl at Knox Central. But the win meant more to South Laurel coach Larry Welch and his team than just ending a streak that included a winless 2010. They were coming off a week of tragedy and adversity that causes a team to rearrange priorities. Welch did not want to speak much about the week, but was obviously emotional when Travis Burns and other players tried to present him with the bowl trophy. One of the issues the Cardinals faced this week was the death of Burns mother. Burns returned to practice late in the week and was named the game’s defensive MVP. Now South Laurel can go to practice with a different outlook than they enjoyed in a while. South Laurel will play Saturday at 8 p.m. against Campbellsville in the Cumberland Valley Bowl. The first game will feature North Laurel against these same Lynn Camp Wildcats. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x531750055/South-Laurel-back-in-the-win-column

WYMT Sports Pigskin Preview: Knox Central Panthers In 2009 the Knox Central Panthesr finished 7-5, and in 2010, they rebounded with a 10-3 finish. This season, they look to advance even further in the post season. But in order to be great, its all about the little things. Knox knows all about the little things. And they know for them to be state wide contenders they have to do something they've never done. "I think in the history of Knox Central, we've never won a district championship. As a first year coach that is my number one goal," says coach Scotty Russell. Under new head coach Scotty Russell, the panthers are recharged and ready for the new season. And for them it all starts with the line. With guys like Codi Diamond, Tyler Grubb, wide out Jeffery Canady, and quarterback Johnathan Barger leading the charge, the Panthers are a force to be reckoned with. Knox Central has a tough road ahead of them but they have been preparing for a state title run their entire life. WYMT Sports Whitley County Pigskin Preview
Our DQ Grill and Chill Pigskin Previews continue down south with Whitley County. The Colonels got hot at the right time last year and look to continue that momentum in 2011. Whitley County has high hopes for 2011 after a season of ups and downs last year. The Colonels lost 5 of their first 6 games before turning it on in district play to finish at .500 and a trip to the second round of the playoffs. Returning for the Colonels is Running back Jordan Chute who ran for more than 600 yards and five touchdowns. But the bread and butter of this team will be its defense. With several returning veterans, Whitley County will be much improved after giving up a little more than 30 points a game last season. The Colonels have a tough schedule with several teams that made deep playoffs runs last year. But this team believes it is their time and it starts August 26th on the road at Russell County. www.wkyt.com/wymtsports/headlines/Whitley_County_Pigskin_Preview_128401468.html

Clay County Tiger Football 2011
Herald-Leader Roark family divided on Friday nights By Mike Fields, Staff writer
Middlesboro senior quarterback Chase Roark had a sensational season opener, passing for 338 yards and three touchdowns and running for 155 yards and a score as the Yellowjackets beat Bourbon County 41-21 last Friday night in Paris. Meanwhile, about 50 miles away in Lancaster, Kenny Roark, Chase's dad, made his debut as Clay County's head coach as the Tigers lost to Garrard County 40-38 in four overtimes. It wasn't until the next day, back home in Middlesboro, that father and son got to trade football stories and check out videos of each other's games. Kenny Roark was synonymous with Middlesboro football for a long time. He was a star lineman on the Jackets' Class 2A state runners-up in 1974 and '75 before going on to play center at Kentucky. He later coached Middlesboro for 17 years and led it to a Class A title in 1998. Chase, then 5 years old, was on the sidelines for that championship game. Roark was the Jackets' coach for Chase's freshman and sophomore years, but he got out of coaching the next season. Still a teacher at Middlesboro, though, he was able to watch his son every Friday night last season. Roark missed coaching so much he decided to get back in it at Clay County. Chase could have transferred and played for his dad, but he chose to stay at Middlesboro. Roark will get to see his son play twice in the next few weeks. Middlesboro plays at home against Hancock County, Tennessee Friday night and Clay County doesn't play until Saturday at Marion County. Middlesboro and Clay County also have different open dates in September. Chase wants to play Division I ball and is drawing interest from UK, Louisville, Cincinnati and several other schools. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder has thrown for more than 6,000 yards in his career. Middlesboro offensive coordinator Jason Chappell, who coached Allan Holland Jr. at Perry Central and Ricky Bowling at South Laurel, says Roark is as good or better than both of them. www.kentucky.com/2011/08/26/1857555/notebook-roark-family-divided.html

They lost a nail-biter to Lexington Catholic, 33-27 in week one, then came from behind for a 32-26 win at 6A Lafayette last Friday. Middlesboro senior quarterback Chase Roark has had an outstanding start to the season, throwing for well over 600 yards and eight touchdowns with no interceptions over the first two games. He’s also ran for over 200 yards three TDs. In contrast, the Bobcats rely on a punishing ground game. They’re led by senior running back Cory Davenport who has run for over 400 yards and five touchdowns to go along with a kick return for a score. The Bell-Middlesboro game should kick off around 9:30 p.m. Friday. Read more: www.middlesborodailynews.com/view/full_story/15273395/article-2011-City-County-Bowl-previews

WYMT Sports Top Ten match up Friday night in Manchester
The #10 Knox Central Panthers have a date with the #5 Perry Central Commodores this Friday night in the Appalachian Wireless Bowl presented by B&W Resources. The Panthers defeated West Jessamine 21-13 last week. Coach Scotty Russell knows perry's offense is explosive. But their game plan is to find a way to keep Commodores linebacker, Matt Robinson out of their backfield.

Sentinel-Echo.com South Laurel downs Campbellsville, 34-32 in 3 OT By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — After the winless season South Laurel endured in 2010, it might be hard for them to believe they could win. Saturday’s 34-32 triple overtime win over Campbellsville may be enough to convince them. The end finally came when Josh Brown intercepted a Campbellsville pass for a two-point conversion that would have led to a fourth overtime. It was a nearly identical play to the first overtime when Brown was called for pass interference to set up a game-tying touchdown. The Cardinals will host Russell County Friday night. The Lakers are also 2-0 with wins over Marion County (48-21) and Whitley County (30-0). www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1642533975/Cardinals-find-a-way-to-survive-in-3-OT

The Times-Tribune Cardinals face tough task ahead By Tim Branstetter,Staff Writer
The South Laurel Cardinals have made a complete 180 since last year and are off to a 2-0 start, but things get tougher as they host Russell County on Friday. One person could stand in the way of the Cardinals getting off to a 3-0 start and that's Russell County's Nick Britt. The junior tailback nearly single-handedly defeated Whitley County (30-0) with his blazing speed and ability to change directions. The Lakers opened the season with a 48-21 win over Marion County. They have a lot of team speed, but Welch knows it all starts with Britt. South Laurel is off to an impressive start with a 34-7 win over Lynn Camp and a 34-32 double-overtime win over Campbellsville. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1078444869/Cardinals-face-tough-task-ahead The Clay County football team will travel to Knox Central September 30 for a district game. For the third straight week, Scottie Russell’s Knox Central Panthers will be playing in a bowl game, but this week’s game in the Appalachian Wireless Bowl against upstart Perry Central might be the biggest one. Not only will the game be on television, but the Panthers are going up against a team that is coming off a huge win against Johnson Central, while the Panthers managed to squeak past West Jessamine. Perry Central (2-0) is coming off an impressive 35-27 win over Johnson Central. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1095932849/A-lot-on-the-line The Clay County football team will travel to Whitley County September 16. The Times-Tribune Whitley County searching for its first win By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Most coaches would believe they have a lot to work on after seeing their team drop a 30-0 decision the week before, but Whitley County coach Jim Black saw a lot of positives from last week’s 30-point loss to Russell County. Whitley County will have its hands full Friday on the road against Rockcastle County. The Rockets are 2-0 on the season after opening up the season with a 45-0 in over Sheldon Clark and a 45-8 victory against Frankfort. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1642535246/Whitley-County-searching-for-its-first-win
