Tyler McDaniel defeats Mahle in a Six-Hole Playoff at Kearney Hill Golf Links
Lexington, Ky. – The final round of the PGA Junior Series sponsored by Genesis Networks at Kearney Hill Golf Links provided exciting lead changes and strong finishes down the stretch on Thursday. In the boys’ 16-18 division, Tyler McDaniel of Manchester, Ky. and Matthew Mahle of Lexington, Ky. faced off in a six-hole playoff. McDaniel prevailed in the end to claim the title after Mahle three-putted for bogey. Both players were playing well up until the final hole and were both three-under-par in the playoff. “I was wondering when it was going to end,” said McDaniel “I was hoping that I didn’t have to make knee-knocker putts to tie but I still had them and made them.” His final-round 71 gave him a three-day-total of 215. Fred Allen Myer of Nicholasville, Ky. had five birdies to shoot the low round of the day with a 69. He finished third overall. Short game wins championships, including recreational ones By James Millard
Members of the AJGA staff organized a Bunker, Pitch, and Putt competition for those playing in the FJ Invitational following round 1 of the event. Involving three stages and over 30 participants, each person had to hit a golf ball out of a greenside bunker, over a greenside bunker, and attempt a coast-to-coast, 109-foot putt. Scoring for the competition was done in the following manner: · If a player’s ball was more than five feet away from the hole, his score was five feet
· If a player missed the green, his score was 10 feet
· If a player’s ball was five feet or less away from the hole, his distance from the hole was also his score
· The winner was the person with the least total distance after all three sections
Bunker shots were made especially difficult with a gallery of players, coaches, parents, and staff watching from a close distance. The crowd, however, proved to be a meaningless distraction after Michael Pisciotta, Tyler McDaniel, Jake McBride, and Matt Gilchrest all holed out from the sand, taking an early lead after the first station. Tyler McDaniel of Manchester, Kentucky, was able to take control of his momentum, placing his final putt within three feet of the hole, close enough to secure the victory. With the win came a Scotty Cameron putter of his choice. Matt Gilchrest of Southlake, Texas, placed second and took home personalized MyJoys. ajga.typepad.com/ajgablog/2012/06/short-game-savant.html

Herald-Leader Tyler McDaniel one shot off lead in Kentucky State Amateur
Patrick Newcomb took the first step toward successfully defending his Kentucky State Amateur golf title by firing a 3-under par 68 in Tuesday's opening round at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville. Three other players with college experience — Jared Flanery (Morehead State), Tyler Mitchell (UNC-Charlotte) and Taylor Riggs (EKU) — also shot 68s on Tuesday. Former Lexington Christian Academy golfers Hunter Frazier and Hunter Stewart opened with 69s, as did Tyler McDaniel, who earned Mr. Golf honors after his freshman season at Clay County last fall. McDaniel had an eagle on the par-4 ninth. The 54-hole tournament continues today (Wednesday) and concludes on Thursday. courier-journal.comTyler McDaniel two shots back going into final day of Kentucky State Amateur
SIMPSONVILLE, KY. — Some of the best golfers in state history have put their names on the silver-plated Kentucky State Amateur trophy. Only a select few have done it two years in a row. Benton’s Patrick Newcomb is 18 holes away from becoming the 11th player to win the title in back-to-back years, joining the likes of Jodie Mudd, Frank Beard and John Owens. Newcomb, a senior-to-be at Murray State University, fired a 4-under-par 67 in Wednesday’s second round at the Cardinal Club and is at 7-under 135, good for a two-stroke lead heading into the final round today. Clay County High School sophomore-to-be Tyler McDaniel, the reigning Kentucky Mr. Golf, is two shots back at 137 after a 3-under 68. “I just want to play good, and if I win, I win, and if I don’t, then I don’t,” said McDaniel, who is 16 and the point guard on the Clay County basketball team. “It would be pretty sweet to win the State Amateur, especially in my first time playing in it.” www.courier-journal.com/article/20120620/SPORTS10/306200132/State-Amateur-Golf-Patrick-Newcomb-pace-keep-his-crown

kentucky.comTyler McDaniel finishes third at Kentucky State Amateur
The only reason Patrick Newcomb had to sweat out his second consecutive Kentucky State Amateur golf championship on Thursday was the sticky 92-degree weather. Newcomb's competition at The Cardinal Club didn't put any heat on him, so he was able to shoot a relatively stress-free even-par 71 to win the 101st State Am by four shots over Ryan McCann. The Murray State senior-to-be became the 11th golfer in the past 60 years to win back-to-back titles. While Newcomb avoided any disastrous holes, his closest challengers did not. Tyler McDaniel, a 16-year-old Clay County sophomore, began the day just two shots off the lead. But he lost the ball on his first tee shot in waist-high weeds and wound up taking a triple bogey. McDaniel finished with a 75 and tied for third at 212. Taylor Riggs, a sophomore at EKU who was in the final group with Newcomb and McDaniel, found a waste area behind the sixth hole, took a drop and a double bogey. He finished with a 73 and tied for third with McDaniel, Bryan Ratterman, Davis Boland and Matt Gann. Newcomb, 22, said he plans to try for a three-peat at Bowling Green Country Club next June. The last golfer to win three State Ams in a row was Bill Musselman (1970-71-72). Read more here: www.kentucky.com/2012/06/21/2233262/newcomb-repeats-as-state-amateur.html

Tyler 'Chip' McDaniel
courier-journal.com McDaniel becomes youngest champion in history of Kentucvky State Am
Tyler McDaniel neither backed up to his competitors nor backed away from history in Thursday’s final round of the Kentucky State Amateur. McDaniel, a 17-year-old who will be a junior at Clay County High School, became the youngest champion in the 102-year history of the tournament. He posted a 13-under-par 203 total for 54 holes and cruised to a six-shot victory over two-time champion Patrick Newcomb. With his scorching-hot putter leading the way, McDaniel carded a final-round 68. He started the last tour of Bowling Green Country Club with a three-shot cushion and extended it to eight shots on the front nine. McDaniel also threatened the tournament scoring mark, but came up one stroke shy to J.B. Holmes’ record at Traditions Golf Club in 2004. McDaniel was definitely on, especially with the putter. He birdied three of the first four holes — including a pair of 30-foot putts to start the day — drained clutch putts to save pars and maintain momentum midway through the round, and locked up the trophy with birdies on the 12th and 14th holes. Experience, even for a teenager, was one of McDaniel’s keys. He played in the final group last year at Cardinal Club and his first tee shot bounced off a cart path and into heavy weeds, leading to a triple bogey. His putting stroke showed no hint of shakiness. He dropped the two 30-footers on the opening holes and slipped home a six-footer for birdie on the fourth hole while his closest competition hemorrhaged shots.
