Sentinel-Echo.com Sizemore, Mahan hired at North Laurel By Denis House, Sports Editor
Brad Sizemore
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. — Brad Sizemore and Eddie Mahan have been hired to guide the North Laurel boys’ and girls’ basketball programs. Sizemore takes over after one season at Garrard County, where he guided the Golden Lions to a 10-18 record. Garrard won its first game in the 45th District tournament, but then lost its second. The previous season, Garrard finished with a 4-25 mark. He was an assistant at South Laurel High School for eight years. Sizemore was also a member of the 2000-2001 Cardinal team that finished 27-7 and advanced to the Elite Eight in the boys’ state tournament. He was a member of the coaching staff that captured the 2005 state title. Eddie Mahan served 10 seasons as a varsity assistant for the women’s basketball team at the University of the Cumberlands. As the top assistant for the program, Mahan has been involved in all areas of the program that enjoyed seven conference championships in the competitive Mid South Conference during his tenure. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1241063751/Sizemore-Mahan-hired-at-North-Laurel TheTimesTribune.com Roscoe Denney will move from South Laurel to North Laurel By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
It’s been a couple of weeks since Brad Sizemore was named to replace Jim Conway as the North Laurel Jaguar basketball coach. During that time span, Sizemore has been able to have seven open gyms, while constructing his coaching staff. With one spot still open, it’s safe to say Sizemore recorded a slam dunk when he confirmed former head coach and South Laurel assistant coach Roscoe Denney will be one of his assistants next year along with former Jaguar player Billy Carson. thetimestribune.com/sports/x709152856/Settling-In

Bluegrassrivals Girls Basketball Preseason Top 20
Please keep in mind that this season is MUCH tougher than last season. However, remember that last season we correctly predicted every Sweet 16 team and had almost the exact same poll as the coaches and AP, BEFORE they released theirs. We know what we are doing, and we are well known in many areas as THE place to learn about and discuss girls basketball.
Here is my attempt at creating a Top 20:

Harlan Daily Enterprise Clay County still the team to beat in 13th Region Enterprise Staff Report
13th Region coaches likely took a sigh of relief after the graduation of Clay County's Whitney Belle Jackson and Kayla Smith last season. There will be big shoes to fill in Manchester, but the three-time defending champions are still the favorite to capture another regional crown this season. While Clay County is the favorite, this year's race could be closer than those in previous seasons with Harlan, Harlan County and Bell County all waiting to take over the top spot in the region. 49th District Clay County (27-7) Coach: James Burchell Overcoming the loss of the region's top player, center Whitney Belle Jackson, and one of the top guards, Kayla Smith, would be tough for most teams to overcome, but coach James Burchell expects the Lady Tigers to be just as good with a nine-deep rotation that should lead to a more balanced attack. "We did lose two awfully good players, but I think we're just as strong," Burchell said. "I think we'll have more depth, and I like our physical strength." Burchell says 5-5 senior point guard Alisha Mitchell (9.4 points per game last year) is much improved after losing 20 pounds. "She's a lot quicker and will score more. She's pretty steady at the point," he said. Burchell has also been impressed by his post tandem of Morgan Chestnut (8.1) and North Laurel transfer Cheyenne Madden (12.9), both 5-11 juniors. "I think we're real strong on the point and real strong inside," Burchell said. "Our wings have to develop. We have to shoot the ball and handle the ball. We turned it over a little too much this summer." Sabrina Smith (6.7), a 5-9 senior, is back at a wing. The other side is up for grabs with sharp-shooting eighth-grader TaLaura Mathis (3.1) competing with seniors Natasha Gilbert and Victoria Jackson. Sara Robinson, a 5-10 sophomore, provides quality depth in the post. Clay is favored to win its fourth straight regional title and fifth in Burchell's six years, but identifying the Lady Tigers' top rivals for the crown is not easy. "I think our region will be pretty strong," Burchell said. "It's hard to say who has improved the most since the summer, but I think Harlan County, Harlan and Bell are going to be there. I think Harlan County matches up better with us than anybody in the region." ROSTER
Seniors - Natasha Gilbert, 5-6, G; Victoria Jackson, 5-5, F; Alisha Mitchell, 5-5, G; Sabrina Smith, 5-9, G. Juniors - Morgan Chesnut, 5-11, C; Cheyenne Madden, 5-11, F. The Times-Tribune Redhounds fall to Tigers 61-58 By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
A two-for-10 shooting effort in the third quarter combined with a one-for-four performance at the free-throw line played a big role in Corbin’s 61-58 loss to Clay County. The Redhounds entered the second half with a 33-26 lead, but after misfiring on their first seven shots to begin the second half, the Tigers managed to respond with a 16-1 run and they held on in the end to win by three points at home. The game between the two 13th Region rivals had a regional tournament feel to it, as Smith helped guide Corbin to a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and a seven-point edge at halftime. thetimestribune.com/sports/x781757657/A-quarter-short

The Times-Tribune Can Whitley County end the streak? By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The 13th Region’s top two teams will square-off against each other today at Whitley County High School. Larry Anderson’s Whitley County Lady Colonels are 4-0 and have been outscoring their opponents by an average of 15 points a game, while three-time defending region champion Clay County is 2-0 and doesn’t seem to have missed a beat after losing the services of Whitney Belle Jackson, who graduated. The Lady Tigers also bring to the table some top notch credentials. Clay County is riding a 46-game win streak against 13th Region opponents. The Lady Tigers are also 90-2 against 13th Region opponents dating back to the 2005-6 season. The last time James Burchell’s squad lost to a 13th Region foe was back on March 9, 2008 when South Laurel handed the Lady Tigers a 74-64 loss. Whitley County is the last 13th Region team to hand Clay County a regular season loss and that came on Jan. 21, 2008 when the Lady Colonels picked up a 44-32 win. Clay County might have lost the services of Jackson, but they picked up former North Laurel star Cheyenne Madden, who scored a game-high 18 points during her first game in a Lady Tiger uniform this past week. The Lady Tigers also possess Sabrina Smith, Taluara Mathis, Morgan Chesnut and Alicia Mitchell, who all have the ability to score in double figures. thetimestribune.com/sports/x91294832/Can-Whitley-County-end-the-streak

The Streak Goes On Clay County runs 13th Region win streak to 47 games By Tim Branstetter, Staff Writer
Two of the top teams in the 13th Region squared off in what turned out to be a tournament type atmosphere as Clay County managed to come from behind and capture a 57-53 victory over Whitley County. Former North Laurel Lady Jaguar Cheyenne Madden led the way for Clay County with 20 points, including a three-point play to seal the win and keep the Lady Tigers' 47-game region win streak alive. The Lady Colonels led 27-16 at the end of the second quarter and managed to hold on to a 40-37 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers turned to Alisha Mitchell who scored eight of her 19 points in the final frame. Mitchell scored a basket that gave her team the lead at 54-53 with :30 remaining to play.

WYMT Sports Clay County Lady Tigers - "The Streak" Reporter: MacKenzie Bates
For the past several seasons, the Number-Two Clay County Lady Tigers have represented the 13th region in Bowling Green by going on a winning streak that has spanned almost four years. When it comes to High School Girls Basketball in the 13th Region, The Clay County Lady Tigers are the cream of the crop, with three Straight Trips to Bowling Green. But back on March 9th, 2008, The Lady Tigers lost to South Laurel in the 13th Region Title Game. Fast Forward almost 1300 days later, Clay County remains undefeated in the 13th Region. That's 46 straight 13th Region Games. And The Lady Tigers did it in Dominating Fashion winning by an average of 22-points a game and only 11 of those victories, were only by single digits. And each time Clay County takes the court in region competition, the pressure to win is on. Most teams don't like to talk about a streak. But for the Clay County Lady Tigers, they talk about it in practice all the time. They want to make sure they use that as motivation to help keep the streak alive and ultimately, get back to Bowling Green. Clay County's goal each year is to have a chance at the state level, but for that to happen, the Lady Tigers say they need to keep the Streak Alive as long as possible. www.wkyt.com/wymtsports/headlines/Clay_County_Lady_Tigers_-_The_Streak_135718488.html
