Pikeville Bears picked to tie for fourth in MSC East
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Dudley Hilton's first edition of UPIKE football will finished tied for fourth in the Mid-South Conference East Division, according to the preseason ratings released today by the conference. Georgetown is tabbed as the favorite in the East Division with 24 voting points, including four first place votes from the six East Division coaches. Cumberlands is the team to beat in the West Division after picking up 34 voting points, including four first place votes from the seven West Division coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll. Georgetown is followed by Campbellsville, which moves to the East this year and received two first-place votes, while Lindsey Wilson was picked third. Pikeville and U.Va.-Wise were tied for fourth, while Kentucky Christian was selected sixth. WVU Tech is ineligible for Mid-South Conference championships in all sports this season. Hilton will coach his first collegiate game on Thursday, Aug. 25 when Pikeville plays host to Point, Ga., University at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. He won 345 games in 36 seasons of high school football in the Commonwealth, matching the state record established by Bob Schneider of Newport Central Catholic over a 44-year span. He led Bell County to two state championships, capturing the 1991 Class AAA crown with a 35-13 win over Meade County and the Class AAAA title in 2008 thanks to a 15-13 victory over Bullitt East. And, in 1997, he took over a downtrodden program at Bourbon County and led it to the Class AA state title in his first season, wrapping it up with a 39-28 win over Owensboro Catholic. In a streak that began after his second season, Hilton has had 34 consecutive winning seasons coaching the sport he loves. Cumberlands was tabbed atop the West, finishing one point ahead of Cumbeland (Tenn.) University. Shorter, Bethel, Union, Faulkner and Belhaven follow in order. Third-pick Shorter and sixth-rated Faulkner appear on Pikeville's schedule this season.

University of Pikeville football August 25 game will be exhibition
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville football schedule has undergone a couple of adjustments, one involving the first game and the other the last. The scheduled season opener will now be an exhibition game after Point (Ga.) University declared itself a club team this season. The game will still take place on Thursday, August 25 at 7 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex, but will not count in the season standings. Point, formerly known as Atlanta Christian College, will field its first football program this fall. As a result, it will play as a club. In the 2000 season, Pikeville's first season of football, the Bears went 7-1 as a club team. Additionally, the season finale against Kentucky Christian College will be a home game, giving the Bears six home dates on its 10-game regular-season schedule. Last season the Bears agreed to host the Knights, who were still working on their on-campus stadium. Kentucky Christian, a member of the Mid-South Conference East Division in football, will make the short trip to Hillard Howard Field to keep the schedule matrix in its proper form. UPIKE will now play its first game under legendary coach Dudley Hilton on Saturday night, Sept. 3 when it hosts Southern Virginia University. That game – as well as the Kentucky Wesleyan game the following Saturday – will kick off at 6 p.m. After a road game at Shorter (Ga.) University on Sept. 17, the Bears will return home on Sept. 24 to play Faulkner University at 1:30 p.m. All four games in October and both November contests will be against MSC East Division competition.

UPIKE football reports for duty
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The first edition of the University of Pikeville Bears have reported to campus. The UPIKE football squad is expected to number a school-record 192 after the entire squad makes it to the university as the Dudley Hilton Era begins at the school. Team members were to report Wednesday afternoon as the coaching staff set up registration tables at the Gym. While the process was to begin at 1 p.m., a line was formed by 12:15 as team members went through the check-in process. Practice will officially begin with two-a-days on Saturday. “We have a lot of excited young men and many of them are local products,” said Hilton, who left Bell County High School tied for the record of most wins in a career by a football coach in the Commonwealth. “They're thrilled to be here and we're really excited to finally get them here and get started.” Among those reporting early was starting quarterback Trevor Hoskins, a junior who set single-season records for completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns last year. “It's great to finally see everybody get to campus and see that they're excited about us getting cranked up,” said Hoskins, a native of Middlesboro. “Several of us have been here working hard this summer and it looks like the newcomers and the returning guys are ready to roll. There's a lot of enthusiasm here right now thanks to Coach Hilton, who I've known for a long time. It's great to see.” Having Hoskins be among the first in line meant a lot to Offensive Coordinator Allan Holland Jr. “It's all part of the leadership process,” Holland said. “It's something we've spent a lot of time talking about and he's definitely buying in. He wants to lead this team where we want to take it, and that begins for this team today.” The Bears will have an open exhibition on Thursday, Aug. 25 when they take on Point University at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex at 7 p.m. The regular-season opener will be Saturday Sept. 3 when UPIKE hosts Southern Virginia University at 6 p.m. at Hambley.

Media meets 186 UPIKE football players University of Pikeville Press Release
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Dudley Hilton and his University of Pikeville masses met the media and had photos taken on Friday in preparation for the 2011 football season. Coach Hilton's roster of 186 passed in front of camera lenses and was available for interviews to promote the season, which begins with an exhibition game on Thursday night when Point (Ga.) University comes to town for a 7 p.m. opening kick. The season begins in earnest on Saturday, Sept. 3 when the Bears entertain Southern Virginia University at 6 p.m. Both of those, as well as the other five home games, will be played at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. Gov. Paul Patton, the president of UPIKE, and new Director of Athletics Dr. Reggie Overton were also on hand to conduct interviews with media members. “Getting everybody in a uniform and seeing them come through after two and three practices a day was a welcome sight for this old coach,” said Hilton, who left Bell County High School as tied for the most wins by a high school coach in Kentucky history. “We're very excited about getting this season started and when you've got kids you can be proud of, you like to see the media come in. “There's nothing better than having a roster full of young men you can be proud of.” Pikeville's roster includes players from 16 states, with 84 hailing from the Commonwealth. Defensive backs are the most prevalent of players, with 37 playing that position.

Hilton saw his offense post 34 first-half points to open a big lead before cruising in, with many people seeing playing time after intermission. Many people were in the stands as well, as a crowd of 4,006 came out to see Hilton, who is tied for the most career wins for a high school coach in the Commonwealth, coach his first collegiate game. The Bears will open the regular season on Saturday, Sept. 3 when they host the University of Southern Virginia at the Hambley Athletics Complex. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. Pikeville posted 430 yards of total offense in the win, with a balanced attack of 181 rushing yards and 249 in the air. All went for touchdowns and all came in the first 6:11 of the period, as the Bears built a 34-6 lead by recess. Football rolls past Southern Virginia
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville Bears set a school-record in scoring as they rolled to a 63-18 win over Southern Virginia University in the regular-season opener Saturday night. The win came in Coach Dudley Hilton's first game as a collegiate coach after posting a state-record 345 as a high school coach. It also marked Pikeville's first win in the regular-season opener since 2007 and ran its record to 6-2 when the season-opener is a home game. Junior quarterback Trevor Hoskins opened the 2011 season in the same manner he played as a sophomore, when he set single-game and single-season marks for completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns. He finished the win 17-of-28 for 382 yards and four touchdowns before leaving the game in the middle of the third period with a 42-3 lead. Hoskins had touchdown passes to three targets, hitting sophomore Jordan Amis from 53 and 27 yards, senior Axxel Rivas for 52 yards and Tanner Napier from 15 before bowing out. The Bears finished with 623 yards of total offense, getting 414 in the air and running for 209. Pikeville got two more school records from unusual spots. After splitting time with two teammates last week, freshman Grayson Quick was a perfect 9-of-9 on PATs, setting new marks in each category. Amis led the Bears with 124 yards on five catches, while Rivas hauled in four balls for 97 yards and junior Trey Hutchinson three for 84. Freshman Marquis Terrell led a balanced rushing attack with 49 yards on only six carries, including a seven-yard touchdown. Senior B.J. Iverson followed with 47 yards and a 10-yard score, while freshman Danny Smith scored on his only carry, a 31-yard tote. Sophomore Akeem Bennett added a 17-yard scoring run. Southern Virginia (0-2) netted 268 yards on the ground thanks to the efforts of freshman Jerry Washington,. Who had 103 yards on 20 carries and a three-yard touchdown run. Four quarterbacks combined for 207 yards in the air for the Knights, with sophomore Mitch Stevenson leading the way with 19-of-37 for 181, including a 15-yard touchdown pass to junior Cameron Williams, and two interceptions. Williams had a game-high 57 yards on three catches, while sophomore Chris Harper, who caught a two-point conversion pass, led all receivers with five catches for 42 yards. Defensively, the Bears were led by freshman John Dudley Hilton, who started a middle linebacker and had nine tackles, eight going down as solos. Sophomore Larry West followed with seven solo tackles, one for loss and an interception. Pikeville had eight tackles for loss, four sacks and three interceptions among its four forced turnovers. The Bears will take the field a week from Saturday when they host Kentucky Wesleyan (0-1) at 6 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. At halftime, the national championship men's basketball team will receive its rings in a special ceremony. In March, the Bears won the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship with an overtime win over Mountain State University.

Late score moves Bears to 2-0
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Junior quarterback Trevor Hoskins hit senior Axxel Rivas from 21 yards out with 53.3 seconds remaining to give the University of Pikeville a 24-17 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday night. The score was Hoskins' third of the night – the second to Rivas – and was his 32nd career scoring pass, which set a new school record for touchdown passes for the university. The win made UPike 2-0 on the season and was its fourth straight after an 0-8 start a year ago. Wesleyan fell to 0-2 on the season. Hoskins finished 19-of-34 for 238 yards along with his three scores. He did throw three interceptions in the win. Rivas finished with 85 yards and two scores on six catches. The Panthers got on the scoreboard first with the costliest of Hoskins' picks, as sophomore Jeff Ward hauled one in at the five and rambled 95 yards for the touchdown. Matt Wilson's PAT made it 7-0, the only first-period touchdown, with 8:14 left. Hoskins evened the count with the only second-quarter score, a 34-yard pass to senior Chris Joseph, with 7:46 left in the half. Freshman Grayson Quick's PAT tied it at 7-7. The turning point in the game came in the final minute of first half when the Panthers got the ball first-and-goal on the four-yard line. Thanks to a penalty, they got seven tries to score, with the final three coming from the one-yard line but were turned away to keep the game tied at the half. Wilson gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead with 7:15 left in the third on a 38-yard field goal, but the Bears responded with the first of Rivas' scoring catches, this one from 22 yards out to make it 14-10 with 3:17 left in the third. Kentucky Wesleyan wasn't finished and regained the lead when senior Chris Owen found junior Shawn Mooney on a three-yard scoring play, ending an eight-play, 65-yard drive that took 5:29 off the clock. Wilson's extra-point made it 17-14 with 9:55 left. But the Bears posted the final 10 points of the night. The first three came on a 20-yard field goal by Quick to tie the score with 4:00 to play, followed by the game-winner, which ended an 83-yard play that took six plays but only 1:24 off the clock. Owen, the Panther quarterback, was 14-of-31 for 150 with the score and no interceptions. He hit Mooney six times for 68 and the score. Freshman John Dudley Hilton was the leading tackler for the second straight week for the Bears, finishing with eight tackles, all but one solos, a recovering a fumble. Senior Marc Sweet had six tackles, including one for loss and recovered a fumble. Kentucky Wesleyan was led by senior linebacker Ken Stoklosa's eight tackles. The all-conference selection had one tackle for loss and recovered a fumble. Ward had six tackles and recovered a fumble in addition to his interception for a score. Pikeville will be back in action next Saturday when it hits the road for the first time, heading to Rome, Ga., to take on 1-0 Shorter College. Kentucky Wesleyan will play its first home game next Saturday when Sienna Heights travels to Owensboro. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Bears get first votes in football poll since 2006
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Dudley Hilton was a household name in the Commonwealth when he came to the University of Pikeville last spring to be the new football coach. He's starting to garner some national acclaim as well. UPike, which ran its record to 2-0 with a 24-17 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College on Saturday night, picked up six votes in the NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 Poll that was released on Monday night. The poll came nearly five years to the day since the last time the Bears – then Pikeville College – was mentioned in the poll. That came on Sept. 11, 2006 when they got two votes in the first coaches ratings of the regular season. In that year's preseason poll, Pikeville was ranked 26th the year after it made the 2005 playoffs for the first and what is still the only time in school history. The last time the Bears were in the Top 25 was in the final ratings of the 2005 season, dated Jan. 17, 2006, when they were 15th in the country. Pikeville is 2-0 on the season with a convincing 63-18 win over Southern Virginia in the season opener, a week prior to last week's win over KWC. The latter of the wins came on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 53.3 seconds left from Trevor Hoskins to Axxel Rivas. It was the second time in the game the pair had hooked up for a score, and gave Hoskins the school's all-time record for touchdown passes in a career with 32. He established the mark in only his 12th game as a Bear. The road to 3-0 won't be easy, however, as the Bears play their first road game of the season on Saturday afternoon when they face Shorter College at 1:30. The Hawks broke into the Top 25 and stand tied for 21st in the country this week. Three Mid-South Conference teams are ahead of Shorter in the poll. Georgetown (1-0) is No. 8, while Cumberlands (2-0) is 10th and Campbellsville (2-0) is 17th. Cumberland University, which fell to 1-1 after a 30-27 loss to Campbellsville, picked up 13 votes in the poll, followed by the Bears. Union College became the seventh Mid-South school in the poll by picking up one vote.

Two late scores lift No. 21 Shorter past UPIKE University of Pikeville Press Release
ROME, Ga. – No. 21 Shorter University scored nine points in the final 27.8 seconds to hold off the University of Pikeville 29-21 Saturday afternoon at Barron Stadium. The Hawks remained unbeaten at 2-0 on the season, while the Bears slipped to 2-1 in their first season under Coach Dudley Hilton. Just as it had done seven days earlier, the Bears took a fourth-quarter lead on a pass from Trevor Hoskins to Axxel Rivas, this time covering eight yards, and freshman Michael Quick's PAT with 10:54 remaining put the Bears in front 21-20. It stayed that was in the closing minutes of play. The Hawks had an opportunity to take the lead with 4:30 to play but sophomore kicker Troy Postell's 44-yard field goal attempt was wide right. The Hawks got the ball back down the stretch and moved it to the Bear 28, where Postell was given another opportunity. This time he nailed it from 45 yards to put the Hawks on top 23-21 with 27.8 seconds left. The Bears weren't ready to die, however, and returned the kick to the 32. Hoskins then hit freshman Tanner Napier for a 37-yard gain to the Shorter 31, and after spiking the ball connected with Napier for another 15 yards to the 16 with 8.1 seconds left. Pikeville then sent Quick on to try the 33-yard game-winning field goal, but it was blocked by senior Daniel Hazard, who picked it up and returned it 65 yards for the score as the horn sounded. Early on it appeared the Hawks were going to run away with the game. Three early touchdown runs – a 14-yarder by sophomore Kenny Foster, a seven-yard run by sophomore Jonny Sitton and a two-yard tote by sophomore C.J. Scott – gave them a 20-0 lead with 12:30 to play in the first half. The Bears began chipping away with a six-yard scoring toss from Hoskins to sophomore Jordan Amis with 3:59 to play in the half, and then got back in the game for good when freshman Marquis Terrell took the opening kick of the second half 84 yards for the score to make it 20-14. Hoskins, a junior from Middlesboro, was 27-of-39 for 261 yards in the loss. He hit Amis nine times for 39 yards, while freshman Shawntez Johnson had four catches for 71 yards. Senior B.J. Iverson led the ground attack with 86 yards on 17 carries. Shorter senior quarterback David Byrd completed only 2-of-11 passes for 43 yards, but both came on the drive to set up the go-ahead field goal in the final minutes of play. Scott led all ball carriers with 131 yards on 15 tries. Sophomore lineman Chris Ross and junior linebacker Marc Sweet were in on nine tackles each for the Bears. Shorter's defensive effort was led by Hazard and junior Demery Hawkins with seven each. Pikeville will be home next Saturday when it entertains Faulkner at 1:30 p.m. at the Hambley Athletics Complex, while Shorter will head to Kentucky to play No. 8 Georgetown at 1:30 p.m.

Hoskins, Travis lead Bears past Faulkner
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – It was billed as a showcase of two of the country's best quarterbacks, and in the end, for at least one day, the one wearing orange came out on top. Pikeville junior Trevor Hoskins tied his own school record with six touchdown passes to lead the Bears to a 51-34 win over Faulkner University on Saturday afternoon. Hoskins, a 6-3 junior from Middlesboro, was 36-of-51 for 481 yards on the day he became the school's all-time leader in career passing yards. His 36 completions also established a new record, surpassing his own mark of 31, which he set last year at Faulkner and then matched at Lindsey Wilson. Amazingly, his 481 yards are nowhere near his record of 607 for which he threw at Georgetown last season. In addition, the Bears set a new school record for most points in a half when they posted a 44-21 halftime lead. But Hoskins wasn't the only player with an eye on the record book. Sophomore Demitri Travis tied the school mark with three interceptions of the nation's leading passer entering this weekend's play, Faulkner junior Josh Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth entered play as the nation's leader in total offense (460 yards), passing (465.5 per game) and pass efficiency (193.2). On Saturday he posted respectable numbers, going 29-of-52 for 312 with three touchdowns, but was intercepted five times in the game. Faulkner (1-2) scored first in the game. After causing a fumble deep in its own end of the field, the Eagles went 58 yards on six plays and scored when freshman D.J. Box scored from a yard out. The kick, however, was blocked, leaving the score 6-0 with 11:01 to play. The Bears scored three times before the period ended to take control. Hoskins sandwiched touchdown passes of nine yards to sophomore Hunter Adams and seven yards to senior Axxel Rivas around a 42-yard field goal by freshman Grayson Quick to give the Bears a 17-6 lead after a period. The wild second period began with Faulkner crawling within two after Hollingsworth hit junior Chris Kordakis for an 11-yard score. The two hooked up for the conversion as well to make it 16-14 with 13:58 left in the half. But the Bears scored three more times before Faulkner found the scoreboard again. Hoskins hit senior Bobby Owens and freshman Tanner Napier on 13-yard scoring passes before sophomore Larry West picked off a Hollingsworth pass and ran 55 yards for the score to make it 37-14 with 3:44 left in the half. The teams traded touchdowns before the welcomed intermission. Hollingsworth hit sophomore D.Q. Woodruff on a 20-yard scoring pass before Hoskins found freshman Shawntez Johnson from 18 yards to send the teams to the half with the Bears on top 44-28. The Eagles got within striking distance in the third period, as Box scored on a one-yard run and Kordakis caught his second touchdown pass of the game on a 10-yard pass to make it 44-34 with 54 seconds left in the period. But the Eagles tried to pull within a score on a two-point conversion that failed, leaving the spread at 10 pints. The only score of the fourth quarter was Hoskins' record-tying sixth touchdown pass, covering 11 yards to Johnson with 13:56 to play. In addition to the passing yards, Pikeville ran for 122 yards in the game. Senior B.J. Iverson and freshman Marquis Terrell had 42 yards each. Two Bears receivers were over the century mark in yards, as Johnson had 122 yards on six catches and sophomore Jordan Amis added 119 on five hauls, making him the third Bear receiver alltime to surpass 1,000 yards. Box had 62 yards to go with his two scores on the ground. Hollingsworth hit seven targets on the day, with Kordakis leading the way with eight catches for 78 yards. In addition to his three picks, Travis added seven solo tackles in the win. Senior Branden Teasley led the way with nine tackles, seven being solos, in addition to a fumble recovery. The Eagles were led on the defensive side by freshman Mike Norman, who had 11 solos among his 12 tackles and interception. The teams begin divisional play within the Mid-South Conference next week. Pikeville will be at Campbellsville in a game set for a 1:30 kickoff while Faulkner will host Shorter College at noon.

Bears force nine turnovers, hold off No. 19 Campbellsville University of Pikeville Press Release
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The offense gains the headlines, and deservedly so at the University of Pikeville. On Saturday, the defense led the way by forcing nine turnovers to beat No. 19 Campbellsville University 37-30. Pikeville improves to 4-1 with the win and 1-0 in the East Division of the Mid-South Conference, while Campbellsville fell to 3-2, 1-1 in the East. It wasn't a picturesque performance for the Bears, who turned it over four times as well, but a road win over a Top 20 program was exactly what Dudley Hilton was looking for. “We didn't do everything right, but we're going to get on that charter bus with a big win and that's all that matters for us,” he said. Pikeville jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period when junior Trevor Hoskins hit sophomore Hunter Adams on a 22-yard scoring pass and freshman Jared Harris scored on a five-yard keeper out of the wildcat formation. Freshman Grayson Quick's extra-points were good. Campbellsville needed little time to tie the game. Quarterback Will Warf kept for a three-yard score and then hit Bobby Leonard from six yards, and David Hon's kicks evened the game with 6:47 left in the half. But the Bears would open a comfortable lead before the break. Hoskins hit senior Axxel Rivas on a 4th-and-3, and when Adams sprung him free with a downfield block he went 40 yards for the score. The kick was blocked, but Quick hit a 22-yard field goal before Hoskins found sophomore Jordan Amis on a six-yard score with 51 seconds left in the half to give the Bears a 30-14 lead at recess. The lone third-period scored was a 29-yard Hoskins-to-Amis touchdown to push the lead to 37-14 with 1:44 left. The Tigers, however, were not ready to die. The loss moves Pikeville to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the East Division of the Mid-South Conference and came in front of a Homecoming crowd of 4,113. Cresap's score – his second one-yard rushing touchdown of the game – ended a day that saw Lindsey Wilson (3-2, 1-1) lead by 14 points on two occasions, only to see the Bears rally to take a fourth-quarter lead. The Bears seemed to be more comfortable coming out of the dressing room, as Hoskins ended a seven-play, 85-yard drive to start the half with a two-yard score to make it 21-14. Freshman Grayson Quick then connected on a 34-yard field goal with 8:34 left in the third to make it 21-17. Neither quarterback was tremendous on the day. Cresap was 25-of-46 for 364 with a score but through four interceptions, as the Bears now have 14 picks in their last three games. Hoskins was 16-of-39 for 232 with two scores and one interception, suffering through a day when Bear receivers struggled catching the ball. Both teams had tailbacks hitting the century mark. PIKEVILLE, Ky. – No. 5 Georgetown College totaled 518 yards of offense and knocked off the University of Pikeville 45-21 Saturday afternoon at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. Georgetown (6-0, 3-0 Mid-South Conference) had a balanced attack, rushing for 228 yards and throwing for another 290 to easily outgain one of the nation's most potent offenses, as the Bears came in with 338 yards on the afternoon. Freshman quarterback Neal Pawsat was tremendous, finishing 18-of-22 for 278 with two touchdowns and one interception in the win. Junior Adam Schmitz was a force both running and receiving, carrying for 36 yards on only six carries with two touchdowns and catching four balls for 47 yards. The wing back from Union, Ky., scored the first two touchdowns of the game on runs of one and 10 yards to give the Tigers a 14-0 first-period lead. Pikeville answered 15 seconds into the second period when quarterback Trevor Hoskins hit senior Axxel Rivas for the final 13 yards of a 10-play, 99-yard drive, and freshman Grayson Quick's extra-point cut the lead in half at 14-7. Tanner Gilbert gets tackle; Pikeville falls to Lindsey Wilson University of Pikeville Press Release
Former Clay County Tiger Tanner Gilbert picked up a solo tackle but Lindsey Wilson College posted 22 fourth-quarter points to turn a five-point deficit into a 53-36 win over his University of Pikeville Bears on Saturday afternoon at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex. Lindsey Wilson (2-1) both ran and passed for more than 300 yards, and its 610 yards of total offense is the most in school history and the third most ever allowed by a Pikeville team. The Blue Raiders also posted 53 points against a Pikeville team that had allowed only 35 points through two games and none after halftime. Pikeville (2-1) put together 449 yards of offense on its own as senior quarterback Trevor Hoskins (18-of-31, three touchdowns and one interception) had his first 300-yard passing game of the season, throwing for 326, posting the sixth 300-yard passing game of his career. Junior receiver Jordan Amis caught six passes for 143 yards and a score, giving him six career 100-yard receiving games. Sophomore Shawntez Johnson came just shy of the mark with 98 yards on four hauls and a score. The Bears also ran for 123 yards, with freshman Chris Perry, who caught a touchdown pass, rushing for 91 yards and a score. Lindsey Wilson had two 100-yard rushing efforts, getting 120 from freshman Tommy Smith and 116 from junior Rome Cotton. Both scored twice on the ground. Sophomore Branden Cresap, who beat the Bears with a touchdown run with 2.1 seconds left a year ago, was 18-of-28 for 301 with a score and a pick. He made 10 receivers happy in the game, with none catching more than three balls. Trailing by five to start the fourth period, the Blue Raiders had three long scoring drives to pull away. Cresap capped the first one with 12:46 to play with a one-yard keeper, and then found sophomore Ben Madon for the conversion. The seven-play, 80-yard drive made it 39-36. Cotton finished a five-play, 71-yard drive with a three-yard scamper with 9:48 to play, with junior Mark Corbett's kick making it 46-36. An insurance score came from Smith, whose nine-yard run was the capper of a 10-play, 67-yard drive that peeled 5:37 off the clock and ended with 2:57 to play. By the end of the first period, each team had found pay dirt twice. Cresap hit junior Willie Jones for a 38-yard score to begin things, with UPIKE answering when Hoskins found Amis for 73 yards. It was the longest play in the career of both players and the fourth longest passing play in school history. Junior Hunter Adams scored on a three-yard rush before Smith found a seam and went 56 yards, ending the first period at 14-14. Lindsey regained the lead with 9:07 left in the half on a 19-yard run by senior De Wallace, only to see the Bears even it again on a seven-yard pass from Hoskins to Perry with 5:44 to play. A 23-yard Corbett field goal with 1:21 remaining sent the Blue Raiders to the locker room on top 24-21. Pikeville seemed to take control in the third. Perry blasted through the line for a 72-yard run with only 57 seconds gone in the half, and a bad snap on a punt gave the Bears a safety with 12:42 remaining to make the score 30-24. Cotton scored from nine yards out before Hoskins ended a 75-yard drive with a two-yard corner pattern to Johnson to make it 36-31 with 6:33 remaining in the third. They forced six U.Va.-Wise turnovers and, after giving up 22 fourth-quarter points in a loss last Saturday, outscored their guests 14-0 in the final period. Pikeville got two scoring runs and a fumble recovery from senior tailback Zeke White, while senior quarterback Trevor Hoskins was 15-of-24 for 276 yards with two scores and a pick. Sophomore Grayson Qu 2:16 left to kick booted the PAT with 11 minutes to play in the opening frame. Senior Trevor Hoskins hit junior Jordan Amis from 20 yards out to make it 14-0 with 6:23 to play in the first. Hoskins then hit Shawntez Johnson on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 3:09 to play to end it. For Johnson, it was the fifth straight game during which he has caught a touchdown pass. Gilbert has three tackles, UPike falls to Belhaven University of Pikeville Press Release
Former Clay County Tiger Tanner Gilbert had four tackles, including one for a loss for the University of Pikeville but Belhaven University scored the game's first 24 points to knock off UPike 24-14 Saturday afternoon at historic H.T. Newell Field. Early on it appeared Belhaven would make a mockery of the game, scoring two touchdowns in the first six minutes, getting points via the offense and special teams. It took only 4:00 to move down the field for the first touchdown, coming when quarterback Alex Williams ended a 62-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown pass to senior Deuce Coon. Joao Bellmonte's PAT made it 7-0. After a three-and-out for the Pikeville offense, senior Isiah Wiley took the punt at the 32, slipped a tackle at the point of catch and went 68 yards for a 14-0 lead with 9:34 to play. But from there the Bears' defense bowed its back, allowing only a second-quarter field goal, this time by Carl Blundell from 33 yards away, before the half. Belhaven got the first points of the second half when Williams ended an 80-yard drive with an 18-yard pass to senior Kylan Pollard, with Bellmonte's PAT making it 24-0. Tanner Gilbert has three tackles in record setting loss to Union University of Pikeville Press Release
An earthquake shook the mountains of Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Nothing was likely as shaken up as the respective football record books for Union and Pikeville. In the end, the Union Bulldogs will get credit for the win, 60-59 over the University of Pikeville Bears on a gorgeous season-ending Saturday afternoon at Birch/Nau Field. But along the way, offensive record books took a beating on either side of the ball in one of the most exciting games in the history of either school. The quarterbacks, seniors who will go down as the most prolific passers in the history of their respective programs, put on masterful performances. Mike Brinkley, a 6-0, 188-pound senior from Anthony, Fla., finished the game 20-of-42 for his first career 400-yard game at 401 and five touchdowns. His counterpart, Trevor Hoskins, a 6-3, 205-pound senior from nearby Middlesboro, finished 20-of-34 for 382 yards and three touchdowns. For Hoskins, the holder of every game, season and career record in the book, it marked the seventh time in his career he had more than 300 yards but tied for only the sixth most in his career. And then there's this – Union finishes the season 4-7; Pikeville closes it out at 3-8. Amazingly, neither team set scoring records. Pikeville's record is 63 in a game and combined 128. Union's records were set in the corresponding game last season, when it lost to Faulkner University 95-89. Union jumped out to an early lead, taking the opening kick downfield for a 32-yard touchdown run by senior Rob Brown. It would turn out to be the senior's final score as an ankle injury moments later ended his career. Freshman kicker made it 7-0 with 12:28 left in the opening period. Pikeville answered quickly, as Hoskins hit Tanner Napier for a 57-yard touchdown catch at 10:40 left in the period. A Seth Millar 19-yard run with 6:34 left and a pair of Grayson Quick PATs gave the Bears a 14-7 lead. But before the period ended, senior quarterback Mike Brinkley had hit senior Jontrel Colbert from 27 yards out and junior Jared Smith for a 40-yard score, making it 21-14 Bulldogs by the end of the period. The Bears got on the scoreboard with 12:29 left in the half when sophomore Octavian Crutcher blocked a punt through the end zone for a safety, cutting it to 21-16. Millar put the Bears back on top with an 11-yard run with 10:03 to play, but the conversion pass failed to keep the lead 22-21. Union regained the lead when sophomore Leonard Dixon went 54 yards for a score. The conversion pass failed but Union led 27-24 with 8:57 to play. Each team closed the half with scoring passes. Hoskins hit junior Jeremy Hill from 23 yards out before the duo hooked up for the two-point conversion. Union's came when Brinkley found senior William McGarvey deom 41 yards out. The Bulldogs led 34-33 at the break. Pikeville scored the first two touchdowns of the second half. Hoskins hit Hill from 30 yards out – failing on the conversion run – and Miller scored for the third time, this time from 11 yards out. Quick's PAT made it 46-34 with 8:38 to play in the third. Scoring runs – Union's by Dixon from one yard and Pikeville's by senior Zeke White from the four – sent the teams to the fourth with Pikeville leading 53-41. Union scored the first 13 points of the fourth. Peebles hit two field goals, from 27 and 20 yards, respectively, around a touchdown that came when freshman Keonrick Daniels fell on a fumble in the end zone. Brinkley had hit Dixon, who fumbled at about the six after gaining 28 yards on the play. The second field goal made it Union 54, Pikeville 53 with 5:08 to play. Pikeville then had its longest drive of the game, needing eight plays to cover 70 yards and taking 3:51 off the clock. It ended with White's second scoring run, this time from a yard out, to make it 59-54 with 1:13 to play. The conversion pass failed. That left the door open for the Bulldogs, who needed only 1:04 to run an amazing 11 plays and covering 76 yards, ending when Brinkley's last career pass found sophomore Deron Hicks for 20 yards. The conversion run failed, making it 60-59 with 8.9 seconds remaining. Pikeville returned the kick to 26 and had 0.5 seconds left. Hoskins final career pass was caught by Tanner Napier, who flipped it to Jordan Amis, but his lateral was recovered by the Bulldogs to end the game. Union carried the ball 38 times for 228 yards, while the Bears went 39 rushes for 225. The Bulldogs netted 629 yards on 83 plays, while Pikeville had 60 on 73 snaps. White led the Bears with 83 yards on 19 carries and two scores, while Millar had 10 carries for 75 yards and three touchdowns. Union got 157 yards and two scores from Dixon on 22 carries. Amis tied a school record with 11 catches in the game and had 128 yards, while Hill caught five for 162 yards and two scores. Napier hauled in three for 84 yards and a score. Hicks led Union receivers with four catches for 105 yards and a score. Sophomore John Dudley Hilton led the Bears with eight tackles, five being solos. Former Union got 10 tackles, five and five, from Darrin Greene in his final performance.
