BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Visiting Reinhardt (Ga.) made the plays it needed to down the stretch and pulled out the 66-63 upset over No. 19 Union on Tuesday in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. The Lady Eagles (7-8 overall, 2-1 AAC) overcame a 10-point deficit with 11:15 to play to capture the conference win. Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) chipped in 13 points with Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) adding 10. Union led for much of the game but had trouble putting much distance between it and Reinhardt. The Lady Bulldogs led 30-28 at the break and appeared to take control of the game when Pile drained a 3-pointer and a sank a pair of free throws to put Union up 52-42 with 11:15 to play. Kareen Abling connected on two free throws with 6.5 seconds to go, giving the Lady Eagles a 66-63 lead. Union tried to get the ball down the floor for a 3-point attempt, but turned the ball over to end any hope of a comeback. Reinhardt dominated Union on the glass, outrebounding the host 48-38 with 20 offensive boards. The Lady Bulldogs had only eight offensive rebounds. MONTREAT, N.C. - Mykiea Russell hit a jumper at the buzzer to send host No. 13 Montreat (N.C.) to a 65-63 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over No. 19 Union on Thursday. In what was a back-and-forth affair, the game boiled down to who had the ball last. Unfortunately for Union, Montreat had that opportunity. Russell countered with a bucket with 26 seconds left to push the Lady Cavaliers up 63-60. But that was too much time for Montreat to win it regulation as Russell scored the game-winner as time expired, giving Montreat the 65-63 decision. The loss is Union's second in a row as it is now 11-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Montreat improves to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the AAC. Lady Bulldogs Remains in NAIA Top Twenty Union College Press Release
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Despite suffering a pair of losses, Union remained the 19th-ranked team according to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Monday. The Lady Bulldogs went 1-2 last week, dropping a three-point game at home and a two-point contest at then-No. 13 Montreat (N.C.). Still, Union garnered enough votes to stay at No. 19. In fact, Union is only 11 points behind No. 16 Grace (Ind.). Union is 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. AAC rival Montreat (12-2 overall, 4-0 AAC) moved up one spot in the poll, taking over at No. 12. Three other conference foes - Bluefield (Va.), Tennessee Wesleyan and Milligan (Tenn.), each received one vote. Indiana Wesleyan maintained its hold on the top spot by remaining a unanimous No. 1 selection for the fourth-consecutive week in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Wildcats received all 14 first-place votes for 374 points despite suffering their first loss of the season to NAIA Division I then-No. 22 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), 65-62, on Dec. 17. Indiana Wesleyan has since won five straight, including a 45-39 victory over then-No. 23 St. Thomas (Fla.) on Dec. 30. The top five teams held from the Dec. 12 poll, although with shuffling in the Nos. 2 through 4 slots. No. 2 Briar Cliff (Iowa) and No. 3 Davenport (Mich.) are each up one spot with 352 and 351 points, respectively. No. 4 College of the Ozarks (Mo.) slides back two places with 347 points due to losses to Biola (Calif.) on Dec. 29 and Azusa Pacific (Calif.) on Dec. 30. No. 5 Morningside (Iowa) remains in the same slot after collecting 324 points. Two-time defending champion and preseason No. 1 Northwestern (Iowa) made the biggest leap this week by vaulting 10 spots to No. 10. The Red Raiders lost four of seven early in the season but have rallied, winning their last nine games. That streak includes victories over then-No. 8 Hastings (Neb.), 80-68, on Dec. 17 and over then-No. 7 Concordia (Neb.), 74-67, on Jan. 4. St. Thomas (Fla.) made the next biggest leap among ranked teams, going from No. 23 to No. 17. In their last two outings, wins over Johnson & Wales (Fla.) and Northwood (Fla.), the Bobcats have triumphed by a combined score of 145-88. Meanwhile, Kansas Wesleyan, formerly No. 12, experienced the biggest drop as it fell from the poll completely after losing three-straight. The only other team to fall from the rankings was Cardinal Stritch (Wis.), who was ranked No. 18 in the Dec. 12 poll. Kansas Wesleyan and Cardinal Stritch are replaced by No. 20 Friends (Kan.) and No. 22 Southwestern (Kan.). Friends is now 6-0 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) play after a 64-60 win over Bethel (Kan.) on Jan. 5 and a 82-64 win over McPherson (Kan.) on Jan. 7. Southwestern sits in second place in the KCAC with its only league loss coming to Friends, 86-76, on Dec. 10. The Great Plains Athletic Conference placed the most teams of any league in the poll with five: Briar Cliff, Morningside, No. 6 Concordia, Northwestern and No. 13 Hastings. The Mid-Central College Conference was second with four ranked teams: Indiana Wesleyan, No. 8 Bethel (Ind.), No. 16 Grace (Ind.) and No. 23 Marian (Ind.). The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The next poll will be announced on Jan. 16.

Herman Boone to Speak at Union on Thursday Union College Press Release
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Coach Herman Boone, who quickly gained national notoriety following the success of the film Remember the Titans, will be keynote speaker at Union College's upcoming annual Spring Convocation. Boone's story of coaching football in a newly integrated school in the early 1970s was chronicled in the 2000 box office hit, which starred Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington. On Jan. 19, he will bring messages associated with this experience to the Union College community. The event is at 9:30 a.m. in Conway Boatman Chapel. Although seating will be limited, the public is invited to attend at no charge. Now retired from coaching, Boone continues to motivate and inspire audiences like Union College students, who vow as part of their freshman induction ceremony to uphold the values that Boone speaks about. Debbie D'Anna, dean of student life, expects Boone's speech to make a profound impact on the student body, while reinforcing their acceptance of the college's core values. Boone will bring lessons in diversity, respect, teamwork, community involvement and the importance of character. He will also offer commentary about his experiences associated with Remember the Titans. Boone's famous story occurred in Alexandria, Va., in 1971, when three area schools integrated to form T.C. Williams High School. It was from this union that the Titan football team was created. Racial strain added to the stress of combining teams that had formerly been rivals. Tensions quickly escalated when Boone was named head coach, passing over the local favorite who remained on the staff as an assistant coach. Boone's appointment angered many people, who viewed the decision as a gesture of goodwill to the black community rather than being based on merit. Remarkably, the two coaches were able to put aside their prejudices, and in doing so unified their players to form a team whose common vision was to respect each other and win football games. At the same time, through the game of football, the coaches were able to help their small Virginian community put aside intolerance and join together to support their children. The Titans became one of the best teams in Virginia, compiling a 13-0 record. They went on to win the state championship. Union College is a four-year liberal arts institution related to the United Methodist Church.

Number 24 Union Collects Key AAC, Road Win Union College Press Release
BRISTOL, Va. - Senior forward Courtney Thomas equaled her career high in scoring, pouring in a team-high 17 points to help lead No. 24 Union to a 62-57 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over host Virginia Intermont on Saturday. Thomas (Glasgow, Ky.) hit 6-of-10 shots and went 4-for-4 from the foul line in netting her 17 points. She last scored 17 against Tennessee Wesleyan on Dec. 4, 2010. Union needed a big game out of Thomas and others with Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.) kept in check. Averaging 21.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, Waters was limited to six points and six rebounds due to foul trouble in the first half and swarming defense when she was on the court. With Waters' productivity drastically reduced, the rest of the Lady Bulldogs stepped up their game. In addition to Thomas, Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) poured in 16 points, while Brooke Hill (Sparta, Ky.) had nine points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Marah Rice (Scottsville, Ky.) and Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) each added seven points. Union led most the game, but it still came down to the wire. Down 57-52, Virginia Intermont's Jayla Lane drained a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game with 26 seconds left. A pair of Thomas free throws pushed the margin back to four, but Teonika Webb scored on a driving layup to make it 59-57 with 15 seconds to play. With 10 seconds to go, Perkins sank a two free throws for a 61-57 Union lead. Shelby May then missed a jumper, and Union got the ball back. Roberts hit 1-of-2 from the line with 2.4 seconds remaining to seal the 62-57 decision. Webb led Virginia Intermont with 22 points with Rainey Story adding 15. With the win, Union improves to 18-7 overall and 9-5 in the AAC. Virginia Intermont is 17-9 overall and 10-4 in conference play. Union returns to action Wednesday when it plays host to Milligan (Tenn.). Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Union Drops Pair of Games Saturday Union College Press Release
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - No. 12 Union suffered two defeats Saturday, falling 3-1 to Iowa Wesleyan and 10-6 to Shawnee State (Ohio) at Jerry W. Carey Stadium. The Bulldogs are in the midst of a three-game winless streak as they are now 2-3 on the year. Union Hangs on for 66-63 Tourney Win Union College Press Release
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - It wasn't the easiest or the prettiest of victories, but it was a victory none the less for No. 22 Union as it defeated seventh-seeded Reinhardt (Ga.) 66-63 in the quarterfinals of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday. The Lady Bulldogs (23-7 overall), the tournament's No. 2 seed, will host No. 6 seed Milligan (Tenn.) Friday at 7 p.m. in the semifinal round. The Buffaloes defeated No. 3 seed Bluefield (Va.) 68-55. The other semifinal game has No. 4 seed Virginia Intermont traveling to No. 1 seed Tennessee Wesleyan. Game time is also 7 p.m. on Friday. Despite only scoring four points and grabbing two rebounds in the first half due to foul trouble, Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.) registered her 19th double-double of the season with a game highs 24 points and 14 rebounds. Brooke Hill (Sparta, Ky.) came off the bench to chip in 11 points and five rebounds, while Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) added 11 points. Only up 32-30 at the half, the Lady Bulldogs came out strong to start the second period and appeared to have a firm grip on the game. Using a 14-2 run, Union built a 46-32 cushion with 12:37 to play. Waters poured in nine points during the rally. However, Reinhardt battled back. A Monique Blanding layup at the 9:55 mark pulled the Lady Eagles within 47-41. After Union reclaimed a 10-point lead, Reinhardt charged back again, piecing together a 12-6 stretch to make it 57-53 at the 2:55 mark. As the shot clock was about to expire, Pile hit a layup and was fouled. After completing the three-point play, Union owned a 62-55 advantage with 1:51 to go. Yet, Blanding scored the next three buckets for Reinhardt during a 6-1 run to pull it within 63-61 with 21 seconds remaining. Fouled with 19 seconds to play, Pile hit 1-of-2 free throws to give Union a three-point lead, but Blanding answered with another layup to make it 64-63 with 13 seconds left. In the closing moments, Waters hit 2-for-4 free throws while Reinhardt was unable to hit another basket as Union held on for the 66-63 victory. It should come to no surprise to anyone the game was this close. The previous two meetings between Union and Reinhardt were decided by three or fewer points. Reinhardt defeated Union 66-63 on Jan. 3 in Barbourville, while Union pulled out a 64-62 decision at Waleska, Ga., on Jan. 31. For the Lady Eagles, Blanding led the way with 17 points with Jordan Marsh added 14 points. Erin Courington had just nine points but hauled in 13 rebounds. Lady Bulldog head coach Tim Curry picks up 300th career victory Union College Press Release
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Junior center Lindsey Waters had a career night, scoring 38 points and grabbing 19 rebounds in leading 22nd-ranked Union to a 76-68 victory over visiting Milligan (Tenn.) in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal round on Friday. The win is also Lady Bulldog head coach Tim Curry's 300th career victory. He is 300-257 overall in 16 years as a head coach and 208-145 in his 11th season at Union. No. 2 seed Union (24-7 overall) will now face top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday at 7 p.m. in Athens, Tenn., for the tournament championship. Tennessee Wesleyan defeated No. 4 seed Virginia Intermont 60-51 in the other semifinal contest. Waters (Stearns, Ky.) was nearly unstoppable, going 12-of-16 from the floor, 3-for-4 from 3-point range and a perfect 11-for-11 at the foul line in registering her career-high 38 points. She also grabbed 20 rebounds, three shy of the single-game mark. However, Waters has tied Shanica Jackson's single-season record of 351, which first set during the 1998-99 season. And as if that wasn't enough, Waters also had four blocks and two assists to her credit. From the outset, Waters was on her game as she scored Union's first 15 points. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good with a Waters layup at the 16:12 mark to make it 8-7. However, sixth-seeded Milligan (18-14 overall) would not go away. Union took a 39-30 lead into the half and owned a 60-49 advantage with 10:07 to play when Waters drained a 25-footer for her third 3-pointer of the day. The Buffaloes bounced back with an 8-0 run, cutting the margin to 60-57 following an Ashlee Price jumper with 7:03 to go. The Lady Bulldogs regrouped, taking a 67-60 lead after Waters converted an old-fashioned, three-point play with 3:07 remaining. Yet, Milligan had an answer, using an 8-2 rally to slice the margin to 69-68 with 49 seconds left. Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) was fouled with 22 seconds to play. She hit the first but missed the second. However, Waters hauled in her biggest rebound of the game, giving Union the ball with 21 seconds to go. Three seconds later, Pile was sent back to the line where she connected on both free throws to give the Lady Bulldogs a 72-68 edge. As Milligan then tried to move the ball down the floor, Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) came up with a steal. Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) then hit two free throws to make it a six-point game. After a Buffalo missed shot, Courtney Thomas (Glasgow, Ky.) was fouled and sealed the game with two more free throws to make the final 76-68. Pile nearly recorded a double-double as she finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Four Buffaloes scored in double figures with Kayla Kelly leading the way with 18. Jamiee Hill had 14 points, while Price and Good each chipped in 13. Union finished the game hitting 42.1 percent (24-of-57 shots) from the field and 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from 3-point range. At the line, the Lady Bulldogs connected on 20-of-23 free throws (87 percent). Milligan hit only 37.3 percent (26-of-67) from the field but drained 8-of 15 shots (53.3 percent) from long range. The Buffaloes struggled at the line, making only 10-of-20. Thanks in large part to Waters, Union won the battle on the board with a 47-37 rebounding edge.

Marah Rice (Scottsville, Ky.) also came through with a season-high, scoring 11 points. Early on, things did not look good for Union as it did not score its first points until the 14:34 mark. Tennessee Wesleyan took advantage of the Lady Bulldogs' struggles, building a 20-4 cushion with 9:01 to go in the first half. Down 26-12, Rice caught fire, draining three 3-pointers in a row and adding a layup to pull Union within 29-23. Not ready to quit, Tennessee Wesleyan clawed its way back, taking a 48-47 lead off a Cody Houck 3-pointer. After Waters reclaimed a one-point lead for Union, Davis hit a bucket to put the hosts up 50-49 with 1:17 to go. Alyson Roberts (Baxter, Tenn.) then put Union up for good with 23-footer for a 52-50 lead with 49 seconds remaining. Tennessee Wesleyan had opportunities to try to tie the score, but it missed two front-ends of a bonus situation and turned the ball over once. Meanwhile, Union hit 3-of-4 free throws in the waning moments to wrap up the 55-50 victory and the AAC Tournament Championship. "I told the girls before the game that this game was going to be about competing and putting yourself in the best position to win," said Curry. "We showed incredible resilience to stick with it and battle back tonight." Houck and Davis paced Tennessee Wesleyan with 14 points apiece. Union finished the game, making 43.8 percent of its shots from the floor (21-of-48 shots) and from 3-point range (7-of-16). College of the Ozarks (Mo.), which boasts the nation's longest winning streak at 20, remained at No. 3 with 320 points. No. 4 Davenport (Mich.) moved up two spots with 310 points after knocking off then-No. 4 Concordia (Mich.) in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament championship. Morningside again rounds out the top five with 296 points. No. 16 College of Idaho, fresh off its Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament title, made the biggest move up in the poll by advancing four positions. Meanwhile, no Top 25 squad fell more than two spots. No. 25 Indiana Southeast, the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament champ, is making its first poll appearance since the Jan. 9 release. Indiana Southeast replaced Saint Mary (Neb.) (No. 23) in the rankings. Thirteen of the 14 Division II women's basketball conferences and independents are represented throughout the Top 25. The GPAC, which has led all leagues in Top 25 representation in each poll this season, again placed the most teams of any conference in the rankings with five: Concordia, Morningside, No. 8 Northwestern (Iowa), No. 12 Briar Cliff (Iowa) and No. 19 Hastings (Neb.). The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. The postseason poll will be released on March 19.

Lady Bulldogs Fall 60-42 at NAIA Tournament Union College Press Release
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Union saw its season coming to a close Wednesday following a 60-42 defeat to Jamestown (N.D.) in the opening round of the NAIA Women's Basketball Division II National Championship Tournament at the Tyson Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The Lady Bulldogs did want they need to do defensively, holding the nation's third-best offense to only 60 points. However, Union struggled offensively and were dominated on the glass as Jamestown outrebounded Union 53-33. Union ends the season with a 25-8 overall record, equaling the program record for most wins in a season and posting the best winning percentage in a season at .758. Union also posted 25 wins during the 2002-03 and 2007-08. The Lady Bulldogs also advanced to the national tournament those seasons. Part of the Lady Bulldogs' struggles stemmed from Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.) being in foul trouble the entire game. She missed the final eight minutes of the first half thanks to two fouls. Then, the Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year fouled out with 8:57 to go. In 16 minutes of action, Waters finished with only four points and six rebounds. "There's two things. Number one, she didn't play well and the smaller post kid doesn't always foul," said Union coach Tim Curry. "But it is what it is. When she gets four points and six rebounds, we're going to struggle a bit at times." In her absence, freshman Brooke Hill (Spara, Ky.) stepped up her game, finishing with a game-high 12 points. She also had six rebounds and three blocked shots. Hill was the lone Lady Bulldog to score in double figures. Laura Perkins (Myra, Ky.) followed with nine, while senior Courtney Thomas (Glasgow, Ky.) had six. Union never got into the flow offensively. The Lady Bulldogs shot 28.3 percent (13-of-46 shots) from the floor and 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from 3-point range. Normally a good free-throw shooting team, Union struggled at the line as it made 11-of-19 free throws (57.9 percent). "We didn't make layups. We were 8-for-29 on 2-point shots and most of them were right at the rim," said Curry. "We talked about this before the game. We knew we'd be about to get to the rim, and when we get there, they're not going to try to block the shot. You just got to go and finish, and we repeatedly blew the easy ones." Jamestown didn't shoot much better, hitting 34.4 percent (22-of-64) from the floor. But the Jimmies controlled the glass and hauled in 19 offensive rebounds to give them several second chance even though they scored just eight second-chance points. Down 30-21 at the half, Union pulled within 34-28 with 13:38 remaining. The Lady Bulldogs had several chances to cut the margin even closer, but they could not seize the opportunity. "We missed two layups and two free throws during that stretch and just didn't rebound from it," said Curry. From that point on, the Jimmies began to steadily add to its lead. Jamestown led 44-32 with 8:57 to go and then 51-35 at the 4:16 mark en route to the 18-point decision. Kayla Roemmich and Bridget Schuneman paced Jamestown with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Amber Ramlo had only three points but hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds. Union is 0-4 all-time in national tournament play. This was the final game as a Lady Bulldog for Thomas, Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) and Kathryn Clark (Frankfort, Ky.). Pile had three points and two assists, while Clark finished with four points.

Bulldogs Use Big Inning to Coast Past Cumberlands Union College Press Release
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Union College baseball team scored 12 runs in the fifth inning to blow open the ballgame, as they posted a dominating 16-3 victory over Cumberlands (Ky.) in seven innings at Jerry Carey Stadium on Wednesday. With the win, Union moved to 7-10 on the season, while Cumberlands fell to 8-10 with the loss. Union got things going offensive right off the bat, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. In the frame, Tim DeVito led off with a single, then was knocked home on a Joe Engle RBI double. Engle then scored after consecutive passed balls moved him home, giving the Bulldogs an early two-run edge. After two innings in which both teams failed to score, Cumberlands got on the board in the top of the fourth to cut the UC lead in half at 2-1. The Bulldogs, however, answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs, once again, to take a 4-1 lead. Zach Dillman had an RBI single in the inning, while DeVito picked up the other RBI on a sacrifice fly-out. After Cumberlands failed to score in the top of the fifth, stranding two on base, the Bulldogs exploded for 12 runs in the bottom half of the frame to blow the game wide open at 16-2. In the inning, Union almost went through the lineup twice, as they pounded out 11 hits and forced three walks. Cumberlands went on to score the final run in the top of the sixth, as the mercy rule went into effect after they went down in order in the top of the seventh, as the Bulldogs took the 13-run home win. Overall at the dish for Union, freshman Nelson Price had another big day, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. DeVito also went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Tyler Brake was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Meanwhile, Dillman was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Donnie Popham rounded out the top performances at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Former Clay County Tiger Corey Nicholson grounded out short in his only plate appearance. On the mound, UC starter Jordan Mynear (1-0) earned his first win of the year after tossing four and a two-thirds. He only gave up a run on four hits. Sandro Ferreira (1-3) took the loss for Cumberlands. Union returns to action on Friday when they host Bryan (Tenn.) in their 2012 AAC season opener. The doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m.
