Fouls, Poor Shooting Hamper Union in 56-53 AAC Loss Union College Press Release
Fouls, poor shooting and key injury proved to be a bad combination for the Union women's basketball team as host Bryan (Tenn.) came away with the 56-53 Appalachian Athletic Conference win on Saturday. The loss drops Union to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in the AAC, while Bryan is now 10-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The Lady Bulldogs were whistled for 27 fouls, sending the Lady Lions to the line 38 times. Bryan made 27 free throws to account for nearly half of its points. Union suffered a setback midway through the first half when senior center Lindsey Waters left the game with an injury. Waters made her only basket of the game to pull Union within 14-12 at the 10:26 mark. So thereafter, she landed wrong when going for a defensive rebound. Waters left the game with only three points and two rebounds. Despite the absence of Waters, Union held its own. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Lions 8-5 the rest of the half to take a 20-19 lead into the intermission. Neither team shot the ball well, combining to go 12-for-51 from the field. Both squads made only six field goals and one 3-pointer during the opening period. Union did make 7-of-8 free throws, while Bryan went 6-for-8 at the line. In the second half, Union led for much of the period and owned a 36-29 lead with 13:27 to play following a Macy Clontz 3-pointer. However, Bryan began to claw its way back. Using an 11-4 run, Bryan tied the game at 40-40 after Macy Kilgore sank a pair of free throws at the 7:39 mark. Undaunted, Union fought back and held a 46-42 lead when Lydia Nash scored with 5:02 remaining. The Lady Lions responded with a 9-1 run to grab a 51-47 lead with 2:52 to play. All but two of Bryan's points during the rally came from the foul line. Down five with 1:11 to play, Union got buckets from Amber Taylor and Laura Perkins to make it 54-53 ballgame with 37 seconds left. But that was as close as Union could get as Bryan got two more free throws down the stretch to seal the 56-53 win. After falling behind 36-29, Bryan scored 19 of its final 27 points from the free-throw line and recorded its last field goal of the game at the 4:33 mark. Poor shooting from everywhere but the charity stripe was the theme of the game for both teams. Union hit only 27.6 percent (16-of-58 shots) from the field and went 4-for-16 from long range. The Lady Bulldogs connected on 17-of-22 free throws for a 77.3 shooting percentage. Bryan shot the ball a little better, making 34.1 percent (14-of-41) but went 1-for-8 from 3-point range. Bryan hit 71.1 percent (27-of-38) from the line. The Lady Lions were hampered by 31 turnovers. Union committed only 23. Alyson Roberys led Union with 14 points with Haley Perkins adding 11. For Bryan, Jenna Ray scored 14, while Burnette and Keila Formont added 13 and 11, respectively. Union returns to action Wednesday at St. Andrews (N.C.). The AAC game tips at 5:30 p.m.

Nash's Big Night Leads Union to 75-46 Victory Union College Press Release
Freshman center Lydia Nash exploded for a career-high 36 points to lead the Union women's basketball team to a 75-46 victory of host St. Andrews (N.C.) in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday. With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improve to 14-6 overall and 7-3 in the conference. The Lady Knights fall to 3-16 overall and 1-9 in the AAC. Heading into the game, Nash had only scored in double figures six times this season with a high of 18 points coming against Asbury (Ky.) on Nov. 20. But with senior Lindsey Waters out with an injury, Nash stepped up in a big way goin 15-of-16 from the field and 6-for-7 at the line. Not only are her 36 points the most any Lady Bulldog has scored this season, they are the second-most in the conference. Only Virginia Intermont's Rainey Story has scored more in a game this season, netting 39 against Point (Ga.) on Jan. 12. There are only six players to score 30 or more points in a game this season in the AAC, and Union is the only team with two players accomplishing the feat. Waters scored 31 against Asbury (Ky.) on Nov. 20. Nash's 15 field goals made are a conference high this season. Waters is second with 14 baskets made in a game. Although averaging only 9.3 points per game for the season, Nash has played well recently, scoring in double figures in three of the last four games and averaging 18.3 points. Union lead from wire-to-wire, opening up an 11-point lead in the first half. St. Andrews cut the deficit to 24-21 with 5:04 left in the first, but Union took a 32-25 lead into the half. The Lady Bulldogs began the second half with a 16-2 run, opening up a 48-27 advantage. Union led by as much as 31 points en route to the 75-46 decision. Haley Perkins was the only other Lady Bulldog to score in double figures as she finished with 11. For St. Andrews, Renee Norton was the lone player to crack double digits, posting a team-high 14 points. Union returns home Saturday to play host to AAC rival Tennessee Wesleyan. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

Reinhardt Hands Union 68-57 Home AAC Loss Union College Press Release
Reinhardt (Ga.) used a second-half surge to pull away from host Union to claim the 68-57 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory on Tuesday. Jennifer Thomas drained a 3-pointer to pull Union even at 39-all with 11:59 to play. However, the Lady Eagles mounted an 18-6 run to open up a 57-45 advantage en route to the 11-point win. Hannah Mayo scored all seven her points during the decisive rally for Reinhardt. The loss drops Union to 14-8 overall and 7-5 in the AAC, while Reinhardt improves to 13-11 overall and 8-4 in league play. The Eagles are now in sole possession of third in the conference standings with Union now sitting in a tie for fourth with Bryan (Tenn.). Should the tournament start today, Union would be the fifth seed since Bryan currently holds the tie-breaker having won the teams' only meeting this season. Union and Bryan face each other in Barbourville in the regular-season finale on Feb. 16. For the second game in a row, Union struggled offensively. The Lady Bulldogs hit 34 percent (16-of-47 shots) from the field and went 3-for-18 (16.7 percent) from 3-point range. In fact, Thomas was the lone Lady Bulldog to make a trey, going 3-for-5 from long range. Reinhardt connected on 19-of-43 shots (44.2 percent) from the floor and finished 3-for-10 on 3-point attempts. The Lady Eagles really did some damage at the foul line in going 27-of-36 (75 percent). Union shot 73.3 percent (22-of-30) from the charity stripe. The majority of the Lady Bulldogs' points came from the bench. Brooke Hill led the team with 17 points with Thomas and Lindsey Waters coming off the bench to chip in nine and eight points respectively. Macy Clontz added a free throw to account for the bench's 35 points. Playing for the first time since Jan. 19, Waters contributed eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Haley Perkins was the lone Union starter to score in double figures, finishing with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. For Reinhardt, Tara Hay netted a game-high 25 points as she went 13-for-16 at the foul line. Kayla Aiken followed with 16 points. Union looked like it was in good shape to take the lead into the half up 22-18 with 2:28 left and momentum on its side. But Reinhardt responded with a 9-2 run to close the period to take a 29-24 lead into the break. The Lady Bulldogs battled back to claim at pair of one-point leads, the last being 33-32 at the 14:19 mark. Big First Half Propels Union to 71-63 AAC Win Union College Press Release
Visiting Virginia Intermont tried to rally, but Union's huge first-half lead was insurmountable on Saturday as the Lady Bulldogs recorded the 71-63 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory. The win is Union's second in a row as it improves to 16-8 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Virginia Intermont is 11-15 overall and 6-8 in the AAC. The Lady Bulldogs dominated the first half, holding the Lady Cobras to 12 points as they built a 38-12 lead at the break. Union hit 13-of-32 shots (40.6 percent) from the field during the opening period, while Virginia Intermont went 3-for-26 (11.5 percent) from the floor. But give the Lady Cobras credit as they did not quit in the second half. Union opened the half with a 6-1 spurt to open up a 31-point lead at 44-13. However, Virginia Intermont began to whittle away at the margin, cutting the deficit to 55-42 following a Coco Hull basket with 4:25 remaining. Union responded by pushing the lead up to 61-44 after a pair of Amber Taylor free throws at the 3:32 mark. Yet, the Lady Cobras kept battling and eventually got the margin in single digits before running out of time as the Lady Bulldogs held on for the 71-63 decision. New Season Brings Lots of New Faces for Bulldogs Union College Press Release
Every new season brings change and uncertainty, and that is never truer than it is for the 2013 Union baseball team. Whereas last year's 35-21 squad was one of the more experienced teams, the 2013 edition has a lot of new faces. Union returns only three players who started or saw regular playing time, and the Bulldogs have a lot of holes to fill on their pitching staff. "There are a lot of positions open right now, and guys will have to win jobs before conference play starts," said Union head coach Bart Osborne. The new season gets underway Monday at 2 p.m. with a trip to non-conference rival Cumberlands (Ky.). Union will play its home opener Friday against Davenport (Mich.) at 2 p.m., and Appalachian Athletic Conference play begins March 1-2 at Point (Ga.). Of the position players, senior first basemen Tyler Brake and senior catcher Gabby Juarbe are the lone returnees. Starting 41 of the 48 games he played in, sophomore Nelson Price is the only regular back in the outfield. The Bulldogs return six pitchers, yet none of them started more than three games out of a combined 49 appearances. With so much youth and inexperience around, Osborne and the rest of the Bulldog coaching staff will be counting on the seniors to step up and set the example. "We're looking for our seniors to provide leadership and lead the way," Osborne said. "They are the ones who have been in our system the most and know what we as a coaching staff expect." As a team, Union batted .320 with 96 doubles, 10 triples, 26 home runs and 361 RBIs in 2012. The Bulldogs outscored their opponents 410-220. A signature trademark of Osborne coached teams has been its base-stealing abilities to create more scoring opportunities. Last season, Union stole only 100 bases, and the returning players accounted for 13 of them. Pitching-wise, Union produced a team ERA of 3.49 with 11 complete games and seven shutouts. The Bulldog staff struck out 365 and walked 158 in 440 2/3 innings pitched. Infield Around the horn, Brake is the only Bulldog who saw significant playing time last season. A mainstay at first base, Brake earned a spot on the 2013 All-Appalachian Athletic Conference Preseason Team after hitting .324 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 35 RBIs last season. Battling for playing with Brake will be sophomores Blake King and Tyler Wheeler. King appeared in our two games last season, registering only one official at bat, while Wheeler red-shirted in 2012. At second base, newcomer Miguel Mendez is the favorite to man the position. A native of Lansing, Mich., the junior is a transfer from MaComb Community College. Sophomore J.D. Burrell is the leading candidate to take over at shortstop right now. He played in 23 games last season, but largely in a pinch-running role. Burrell started twice and batted .364 with eight hits in 22 at bats, producing a double, three RBIs and six runs scored. Newcomer Jared Tomany and sophomore Jackson Arnett will begin the year rotating at third. Tomany is a junior transfer from Kishawaukee Community College and could see playing time at second and short as well. Arnett appeared in two games last season, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Sophomore Zach Gross could also figure into the mix in the field. In 32 games with four starts last season, he batted .208 with three RBIs and 14 runs scored. Outfield While sophomore Nelson Price returns with the most experience from last season, the Bulldogs have a number of others who have spent time roaming the range. Playing in 48 games and starting 41, Price posted a .328 average with 10 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 33 RBIs. Price will start the season in left field with freshman Tyler Young battling him for playing time. In center, a trio of players will vie for starting spot. Junior transfer LaVance Anderson heads the group with sophomore Vance Sullivan and junior Garrett Fryrear nipping at his heels. Anderson comes to Union from Lackawanna College, while Sullivan and Fryrear were used in pinch-running opportunities last season. Sullivan and Fryrear combined to score 36 runs with Sullivan also going 6-for-35 (.171) at the play with four RBIs. In right, Ben Hartley returns for a re-do of his junior season. He was all set to have a solid junior campaign in 2012, but an injury in the season opener ended up sidelining him for the year. As a sophomore in 2011, Hartley batted .329 with five doubles, a triple, a home run and 29 RBIs. He scored 57 times and swiped 32 bases as well. Hartley will compete for the starting nod with junior Corey Nicholson, who played in three games last season and batted .250 (1-of-4) with a RBI and a run scored. Catcher Juarbe, another All-AAC Preseason Team selection, leads a group of five who could see regular time behind the dish for the Bulldogs. In 44 games, Juarbe batted .275 with 11 doubles, a triple, a home run and 18 RBIs. Defensively, he was tough to run against as he gunned nine would-be base stealers. Sophomore Zach Dillman also saw action behind the plate in 2012, appearing in 28 games and starting 11. He posted a .289 average with three doubles and 12 RBI while throwing out one runner. Three newcomers – sophomore Colby Lawson, freshman Tyler Tye and freshman Tee Goble, will push Juarbe and Dillman for playing time. Pitching Staff One of the biggest uncertainties for Union this season is who will the starting pitchers will be. The six returning hurlers made a combined 49 appearances but only five starts. "Everyone on our pitching staff is going to have a shot to show us what they can do," said Osborne. "With 16 games scheduled before our first conference series, we are hoping to get our staff lined out before the heart of the season gets here." Junior Luke Collis and sophomore Justin King are two favorites to lock down a starting pitching role. Collis is a transfer from Southwest Illinois College, while King, a Barbourville native, joins Union after a season at Lincoln Memorial University. Other potential starters could be Price, Trey Alexander and Drew Hillard. Price made one appearance on the mound last year, tossing one shutout inning. Hillard is arguably the Bulldogs' top returning arm. In 2012, he made 20 appearances with two starts and went 3-2 with a 2.67 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings of work. Alexander, a right-hander, is freshman from Glasgow, Ky. Jordan Mynear returns following a 3-0 season in 2012. In 11 appearances, he made three starts and registered a 4.19 ERA with eight strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings pitched. Junior Kendall Ferguson is also back after making three appearances and recording a 3.86 ERA with no decisions in 2 1/3 innings of work. Travis Kottenbrock is also back, but an injury has him sidelined and it is uncertain when or if the left hander will take the mound this season. In 2012, he went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 11 relief appearances. Kottenbrock fanned 12 and walked five in 15 innings pitched. Besides Price, Sullivan and Tomany are positions players who could spend time on the mound. Sullivan made three appearances last season, striking out two in 3 2/3 innings pitched with a 12.27 ERA. Others who could see time on the mound include seniors Eli Nickell, Kyle Williams and Jacob Janutolo; sophomore Colby Jamerson; and freshmen Justin Smith and Alex Fuller. Schedule Per the usual, the schedule is a strong one for the Bulldogs. In addition to the 24-game conference slate which includes No. 1 and defending NAIA national champion Tennessee Wesleyan, Union plays four other teams ranked in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 as well as two others which received votes in the poll. The Bulldogs will face No. 3 Lee (Tenn.), No. 9 Faulkner (Ala.), No. 12 Lindsey Wilson and No. 20 Georgetown (Ky.) for a total of eight games – all but two scheduled for home. The conference series with Tennessee Wesleyan is also set to be played at Jerry W. Carey Stadium. Union will play three-games sets against Davenport and AAC rival Bryan (Tenn.), both of which received votes. In all, Union has 38 home games scheduled versus 19 road games. The AAC Union is projected to finish third in the conference in 2013, according to the AAC Coaches' Poll. Tennessee Wesleyan is the overwhelming favorite to win the conference championship. Tennessee Wesleyan received eight of the nine first-place votes for a total of 64 points. Teams did not vote for themselves. Bryan received the only other first-place vote and is second with 54 points. Right behind Bryan is Union in third with 52 points. Milligan (Tenn.) (42 points) and Reinhardt (Ga.) (34) round out the top five. Montreat (N.C.) is sixth at 25 points, Point seventh with 16 points, St. Andrews (N.C.) eighth at 15 points, and Virginia Intermont ninth with 12 points. Union went 16-8 in the AAC to place third during the regular season in 2012. The Bulldogs advanced to the tournament championship game, but fell 5-3 to Tennessee Wesleyan in extra innings. The 2013 AAC Baseball Tournament is set for April 29-May 3 at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
