TWC Outlasts Union, Wins 9-7 in 11 Innings Union College Press Release
Union had its sights set on another upset, but it was not meant to be as visiting and top-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan battled back to claim the 9-7, 11-inning Appalachian Athletic Conference victory on Saturday. The loss drops Union to 19-12 overall and 6-6 in conference play, while Tennessee Wesleyan is 25-9 overall and 10-2 in the AAC. Tennessee Wesleyan also won the weekend series two games to one. Tied 6-6 after eight innings, both teams had their chances in the ninth and 10th to take the lead and/or the win, but all attempts went for naught. Tennessee Wesleyan had one on with one out in the ninth, but the threat ended when Gabby Juarbe (San Juan, P.R.) threw out Aaron Stubblefield trying to steal second for the third out in the frame. In the bottom of the ninth, Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) and Tyler Young (Manchester, Ky.) lined back-to-back, singles with two outs. However, Noah Piard got the next batter to fly out to center to send the game to extra innings. Both teams rapped out a single apiece in the 10th, but no runners got past second base. In the top of the 11th, Tennessee Wesleyan managed to load the bases with two outs when Travis Burnside roped a 3-2 pitch down the right-field line for a double, driving in all three runs for a 9-6 advantage. Union was not about to go down with a fight, and Juarbe led off the bottom of the 11th with a solo home run to left. Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) nearly made a 9-8 game with a solo shot of his own but Trey Griffin snagged it at the wall. Piard got Union's next to batters to ground out, sealing the 9-7 Tennessee Wesleyan win. Piard improved to 2-0 with the win, allowing one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. Jared Tomany (Bryant, Wis.) suffered the loss to go to 0-1, surrendering four earned runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Union received production throughout its lineup with LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.), Juarbe, Price and Ben Hartley (Lexington, Ky.) each collected two hits. Juarbe and Price each had two RBIs as well. Jackson Arnett (Tompkinsville, Ky.) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a home run. The 1-2-3 hitters in Tennessee Wesleyan's lineup as well as the No. 9 hitter did the most damage for the visitors, going a combined 15-for-25 with five runs scored and six RBIs. The rest of Tennessee Wesleyan's lineup with 4-of-24 with two RBIs. Burnside, Tennessee Wesleyan's leadoff hitter, finished the game 6-for-7 with three doubles and three RBIs. Jake Stone went 4-of-7 with a RBI, while Branden Walker was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Union received a solid pitching performance out of starter Drew Hillard (Lexington, Ky.). Lasting five inning, he allowed one earned run on eight hits and three walks and fanned a season-high seven batters. Tennessee Wesleyan drew first blood with a run in the top of the third, but Union countered with a four-run rally all starting with two outs. With two gone, Hartley got things started with a single, and Anderson followed with a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Juarbe followed with a single up the middle to score Hartley to make it 1-1. After a walk to load the bases, Price singled through the left side of the infield to drive in two more runs. Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) followed with a RBI single of his own, making it a 4-1 contest. Arnett led off the fourth with a solo home run to put Union up 5-1, and Hartley added a RBI single in the fifth to make it 6-1. In the sixth, Tennessee Wesleyan put three runs on the board thanks to a Brad Carpenter two-run double and a Stone RBI single. After tallying another run in the seventh, Tennessee Wesleyan tied the game up at 6-all in the eighth on a Griffin solo home run. Following a pair of scoreless frames, Tennessee Wesleyan pulled out the win with a three-run rally in the 11th. By the Numbers * The teams combined to leave 25 runners on base - 15 for Tennessee Wesleyan and 10 for Union * Juarbe now leads the team in home runs with four. Bulldogs Cruise Past VI, 13-4, to take AAC Series Union College Press Release
The Union College baseball team made quick work of Virginia Intermont in the third and final game of an Appalachian Athletic Conference series Sunday, bashing out 20 hits in a convincing 13-4 victory. With the win, the Bulldogs clinched the weekend series win over the Cobras, taking two of three games, and improved to 23-16 overall, 9-9 in the AAC. VI fell to 19-11, 9-6 in the AAC with the defeat. In the win, UC got off to a fast start, racing out to a 8-0 lead after two and a half innings. The run support was more than enough for the Union pitching staff to work with from there on out, as the combination of starter Drew Hillard and reliever Trey Alexander combined to allow just six hits on the afternoon. Overall, six players in the Union lineup had multiple-hit games, paced by designated hitter Zach Dillman and left fielder Nelson Price. Price went 3-for-5 on the day, with three runs scored and five RBI, three of which came on a three-run homer in the seventh inning. Meanwhile, Dillman went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Also, second baseman Ben Hartley had a big day batting ninth in the lineup, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored. Miguel Mendez was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four runs scored, while Tyler Young went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Tyler Brake rounded out the players with multiple hit games, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. On the mound, Alexander (4-0) earned the win, tossing five innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits. Hillard was solid in his start, striking out five in four innings of work. Turning Point After plating two runs in the top of the first, the Bulldogs essentially put the game out of VI's reach with a four-run second inning to go up 6-0. LaVance Anderson had the first RBI hit of the inning, a single with no outs that scored Mendez. However, three of the runs in the frame came with two outs, as Brake, Dillman, and Young all had RBI singles with two away. By the Numbers: * The Bulldogs blasted 20 hits in today's victory, the most in a game for the team since smacking 23 hits in a wild 23-21 victory at Cumberlands (Ky.) on Mar. 18, 2010. * Union brought the lumber in their two wins this weekend, combining to score 28 runs and smack 32 hits in their two victories over the Cobras. * Price's five RBI day was a career-best for the sophomore. He also hit his third homerun of the season in the win, and now has hit eight round trippers in his career. * Dillman's four-hit game matched a career best, as the sophomore also had four hits in an 18-11 win over UC-Clermont on Mar. 20 * Alexander has turned into a reliable long reliever for the Bulldogs, and with today's performance lowered his ERA on the season to 1.86. Up Next: Union plays it's first home game in over two weeks on Tuesday, as the Bulldogs host Georgetown (Ky.) at Jerry Carey Stadium in a single nine inning contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Brake Doubles Way to Record in 18-8 UC Win Union College Press Release
Senior first baseman Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) etched his name into the record book as became the first Bulldog to line four doubles in a game in Union's 18-8 victory over visiting Georgetown (Ky.) on Tuesday. Six players had previous lined three doubles in a game with Arthur Dockery being the last to do so on March 20, 2011, against Tennessee Wesleyan. "I am really happy for Tyler," said Union coach Bart Osborne. "He's a four-year player for us and has worked hard day-in and day-out for us. This could not happen to a better player." According to the NAIA website, Brake is only the fourth player to ever collect four or more doubles in a game in NAIA history. Korey Grow of Huntington (Ind.) and Pichi Balet of Cumberland (Tenn.) each had five with Grow doing so in 2007 against Grand View (Iowa) and Balet in 2001 versus Lambuth (Tenn.). Josh Northup of Bellevue (Neb.) collected four doubles against Park (Mo.) on April 15, 2008. Brake had ripped three doubles by the fourth inning as he started off 3-for-3. He popped out and walked in his next two plate appearances. In the bottom of the seventh with Union up 17-8, Brake came up with two runners on and two out. He ended the game with a double shot to left-center field wall for his fourth double and second RBI of the game, completing the 18-8 Bulldog victory. For the game, Brake went 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Union is now 24-16 overall, while Georgetown fell to 25-14 on the year. Overshadowed by Brake's record performance was the hitting of freshman Tyler Young (Manchester, Ky.), who collected a season-high five RBIs in going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) went 3-for-5 with two driven in, while Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. The entire lineup was clicking offensively as all nine starters had at least one hit. Union finished with 17 basehits, marking the fourth double-digit hit total in the last six games. The Bulldogs, for the first time this season, have their team batting average sitting at .300. "Our bats have finally woke up," Osborne said. "I just hope we can keep it going the rest of the season." Turning Point A five-run second provided the energy to fuel Union's offensive outburst as the Bulldogs erased an early four-run deficit. Georgetown got the early advantage, scoring four runs in the top of the first - all with two outs. Union cut the deficit in half with RBIs from Brake and Young. In the second, Gabby Juarbe (San Juan, P.R.) got the rally going with a two-run triple to tie the score at 4-4. Price singled in Juarbe and Dillman later added a two-run single to put Union up 7-4. Union extended its lead to 13-4 with a six-run fourth before Georgetown finally scored again, posting two runs in the fifth. The Bulldogs pushed three runs across in the sixth and both teams tacked on two apiece in the seventh to make the final 18-8. Vance Sullivan (Verona, Ky.) got the win for Union, improving to 5-0. He allowed six runs, five earned on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Jordan Nekola suffered the loss for Georgetown, surrendering seven runs, all earned, on seven hits, and two walks with no strikeouts. He is now 2-1. By the Numbers * Price extended his team-best hitting streak to 11 games. He's had multiple hits in eight of the 11 games. * Brake now leads the team with 10 doubles on the season. Price and Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) each have eight, while Juarbe has seven. Union has 49 as a team. * Brake and Juarbe lead the team in RBIs with both having 34. Price is right behind at 33. * In the last two games, Union has compiled 31 runs and 37 hits while holding the opposition to 12 runs and 16 hits. Up Next Union will play at St. Catharine (Ky.) Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Brake Helps Power Bulldog DH Sweep Union College Press Release
Senior Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) continued his hot hitting Saturday as he helped fuel Union's Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of visiting Milligan (Tenn.), winning 7-3 and 3-1 in extra innings. On the day, the Bulldog first baseman went 4-for-6 with a double, two home runs and four RBIs. Brake's biggest hit came in the eighth inning of the game two when he blasted a two-run home run to give Union the 3-1, walk-off win in extra innings. The sweep improves Union's overall record to 26-17 and its conference mark to 11-9. Milligan falls to 20-20 overall and 7-10 in the AAC. Justin King (Barbourville, Ky.) pitched a pair of scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth frames to up his record to 3-4. King faced the minimum, not allowing a hit or walk with one strikeout. Meanwhile, Drew Hillard (Lexington, Ky.) closed out the game with two shutout innings in the sixth and seventh to collect his first save of the year. Hillard gave up two hits and walks and fanned one. A three-run second put the Bulldogs up 4-1 as they never trailed en route to the 7-3 decision. With two on and one out, LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.) lined a run-scoring single to break the 1-1 tie. Gabby Juarbe (San Juan, P.R.) followed with a two-run base hit to give Union a 4-1 advantage. Milligan scored twice in the top of the third, but Union accounted for the game's final three runs on its way to the four-run win. Anderson and Juarbe both had two hits and two RBIs, while Brake finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBIs. For Milligan, Tyree Jefferies led the way in going 2-for-4 with two driven. Ethan Fleenor took the loss for the Buffaloes, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings pitched. He is now 3-5. Game 2 - Turning Point In what was a pitchers' duel, it was the bat of Brake which decided the outcome as he belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. Tied at 1-1, Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) led off the eighth with a five-pitch walk. Brake then sent the first offering from Buffalo closer Justin Joshson rocketing over the right-field fence to give Union the 3-1, extra-inning victory. Milligan outhit Union 9-4, but starter Luke Collis (St. Charles, Mo.) did a masterful job keeping the Buffaloes off the scoreboard. Milligan's lone run came in the fourth and it was unearned. Collis recorded his fifth complete game as improved to 5-2. He gave up one unearned run on nine hits and one walk to go along with a season-high nine strikeouts. Union's other run came off a Price sac fly in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. Corey McPherson, Luke Kirk and Brett Mercurio each went 2-for-4 for Milligan. Johnson took the loss, dropping him to 2-5. By the Numbers * Price extended his hit streak to 12 games, but it ended in the second game. However, Price had the game-tying RBI with a sac fly and scored the game-winning run in the 3-1 win. * Anderson now has the longest current hit streak for Union, which is now at 11 games. Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) is next at seven games with Juarbe at five. * Collis' nine strikeouts are the most by any Bulldog pitcher in a game this season. The previous high was seven by Hillard. * In the last four games, Brake is 8-for-14 with five doubles, six runs scored, two home runs and six RBIs. * Brake's two four-baggers give Union 20 on the year in 43 games. The Bulldogs belted 26 in 56 games last season. * Union stole six bases on the game, upping its total to 92 in 43 games. Last year, Union swiped 100. Up Next After Sunday's game versus Milligan, Union will travel to Georgetown (Ky.) on Tuesday for a single, nine-inning contest at 6 p.m.

Former Clay County Tiger Tyler Young knocked in the winning run in the Union 17-16 win over Milligan.
How Sweep It Is! Union College Press Release
There were 33 runs scored, 38 combined base hits and 10 total pitchers used. But in the end, it all added up to a Union 17-16, Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Milligan (Tenn.) on Sunday. The wild, one-run decision completed the three-game sweep for the Bulldogs as they improve to 27-17 overall and 12-9 in conference play. The Buffaloes fall to 20-21 overall and 7-11 in the AAC. As one would expect, there were several offensive heroes for Union. Gabby Juarbe (San Juan, P.R.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs, Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) finished 2-or-5 with a home run and three RBIs, and Ben Hartley (Lexington, Ky.) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three driven in. A high percentage of Milligan's offense came off the bat of Brandon Malone, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs. The scoring started early with Union posting three runs in the first inning as there was at least in one run scored in every inning except for the seventh inning as both squads were kept at bay. After the Bulldogs took the early 3-0 lead in the first, the Buffaloes reeled off the next nine runs, scoring four in the second, two the third and three in the top of fourth. During that stretch, Malone belted two four-baggers, driving in a total of five runs to lift Milligan to a 9-3 cushion. In the bottom of the fourth, Union began the comeback. The Bulldogs put together a two-out rally with Hartley starting it with a run-scoring single. Then with two on, Juarbe launched a three-run bomb to pull Union within 9-7. Union evened the ledger in the fifth as Hartley lined a two-out single to push a pair of runs across. Milligan bounced back with a three-run sixth, collecting Tyree Jefferies RBI double and a Nathan Millsap two-run single for a 12-9 lead. The Buffaloes tacked on a run in the top of the eighth thanks to a Brett Mercurio run-scoring single for a 13-9 advantage. But then, Union's offense exploded. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a walk and back-to-back hit batters. Juarbe followed with a two-run single to cut the deficit in half. After a Nelson Price (Burkesville, Ky.) single to reload the bases, Tyler Brake (Burlington, Ky.) singled to make it a one-run contest. Zach Dillman (Cincinnati, Ohio) then lofted a deep sac fly to right to drive in the equalizer, tying the game at 13-13. Tyler Young (Manchester, Ky.) put the Bulldogs up one with a run-scoring single, and Mendez punctuated the rally with a three-run home run to give Union a 17-13 lead. Union needed those insurance runs as Milligan was not going to go down quietly. Blake Buck lined a one-out, double to drive in a run. With two on and one out, Millsap roped a two-run double to pull the Buffaloes within 17-16. Mercurio then singled, but the ball hit the umpire to keep the runners at second and first with one out. Reliever Blake King (Hindman, Ky.) got out of the jam with a strikeout and line out to left as Union escaped with the 17-16 victory. Jared Tomany (Bryant, Wis.) picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-2 as he allowed one earned run on four hits and no walks with two strikeouts in three innings pitched. The save is the first for King, who gave up no runs on two hits and no walks with a strikeout. Jake Howell suffered the loss for Milligan, dropping him to 0-2. He was responsible for five earned runs on five hits and no walks with one strikeout. By the Numbers * All 33 runs were earned. There was one error committed by Milligan, but it did not result in a run. * LaVance Anderson (Bowling Green, Ky.) extended his hit streak to 12 games, equaling Price's team-best stretch on the season. Mendez' streak is now at eight with Juarbe's now at six. * The 16 runs are the most Union has allowed to an opponent this season. * Union stole five more bases to give it 97 on the year. Up Next Union will travel to Georgetown (Ky.) on Tuesday for a single-game contest at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs return home Wednesday to play host to Cumberlands (Ky.) at 4 p.m.

Former Clay County Tiger Tyler Young was 1 for 3 in the Union loss to Number 4 Faulkner Saturday afternoon.
No. 4 Faulkner Takes Two from Bulldogs on Senior Day Union College Press Release
The Union College baseball team dropped a pair of games to No. 4 Faulkner (Ala.) Saturday afternoon at Jerry Carey Stadium, losing game one, 5-1, and game two, 3-0. With the losses, the Bulldogs fell to 27-20, while Faulkner improved to 40-10 with the victories. Before the first game, the Union College program honored eight seniors for their contributions to the program. They were: Ben Hartley, Travis Kottenbrock, Gabby Juarbe, Kyle Williams, Drew Hillard, Tyler Brake, Jordan Mynear, and Jacob Janutolo. Game One In the first game, Faulkner jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, and never looked backed, using strong pitching to post the four-run win. Union scored their lone run of the contest in the fourth, as a Brake RBI single scored LaVance Anderson with two outs. However, the Bulldogs recorded just four hits in the first game against the Faulkner pitching duo of starter Johnny Shuttlesworth and reliever Julian Esquibel. Shuttlesworth (10-1) earned the win, giving up three hits in five innings of work with five strikeouts, while Esquibel earned the first save of his season in four innings of shutout relief work. For UC, starter Hiilard (3-4) was the loser. Game Two In the second game, Faulkner once again leaped out to a first inning lead, and never looked back, as the Bulldog offense was stymied once again by the Eagle pitching staff. In the first, Faulkner got on the board with two runs off of UC starter Luke Collis to go up 2-0. The lead was more than enough for Eagle pitchers Will Dismukes and Brad Griffis to work with, as the Bulldogs mustered just three hits on the pair in the contest. Bulldogs Roll Past Reinhardt, Win 10-0 Union College Press Release
Union moved closer to securing the No. 2 seed for next week's Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament with a 10-0 league win over visiting Reinhardt (Ga.) Wednesday. With the win, the Bulldogs are 28-20 overall and 13-9 in the AAC. Union has two more conference games remaining - both with Reinhardt. The only team who can catch Union is Virginia Intermont, which is 11-10 in league play. The Cobras, however, have to close out the season at ninth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. A victory in one of the two games versus Reinhardt will lock up the No. 2 seed for Union since it holds the tie-breaker over Virginia Intermont as the Bulldogs took the series two games to one from the Cobras. Thursday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. Prior to the first game, Union President Dr. Marcia Hawkins will throw out the first pitch. Turning Point A six-run fifth turned a relatively close game into a rout as Union recorded the 10-0 decision. The Bulldog pitching staff kept at the Eagle batters at bay, allowing only four hits, two walks and one hit batter. Meanwhile, Union was helped out by eight Reinhardt errors, resulting in four unearned runs. Union scored a run in each the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead before pushing two more across in the fourth. Before the Bulldogs could bat in the fifth, there was a 55-minute rain delay. When play resumed, the Union bats took over. Miguel Mendez (Lansing, Mich.) got the scoring going with a two-run double, which was followed by a J.D. Burrell (Amanda, Ohio) two-run single for an 8-0 lead. The Bulldogs tacked two unearned runs to stretch the margin to 10-0. Luke Collis (St. Charles, Mo.) picked up the win, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk in five innings work, upping his record to 6-3. Justin King (Barbourville, Ky.) and Blake King (Hindman, Ky.) each tossed one inning of shutout ball to wrap up the victory. Mendez and Burrell each finished with two hits and two RBIs. By the Numbers * This is the fourth shutout victory for the Bulldogs this season. * Union collected its 100th stolen base of the year in the 48th game. The Bulldogs had 100 swipes in 56 games last year. * Collis has dropped his ERA to 2.99. Up Next Thursday's doubleheader will be the final two games for Union during the regular-season. Reinhardt tacked on a run off a Dusty Davis double in the fifth to stretch its lead to 9-6. Bulldogs Pull Away From Bryan in 9-4 AAC Tournament Win Union College Press Release
The second-seeded Union College baseball team scored three runs in three separate innings, and used a late push to pull past seventh-seeded Bryan (Tenn.), 9-4, on Tuesday at the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium. With the win, UC improved to 30-21 overall, and move on to play sixth-seeded Virginia Intermont Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. Bryan fell to 29-25 with the loss, and face elimination tomorrow in a tilt with third-seeded St. Andrews at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs got off to a fast start in the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead after a half inning. In the frame, Nelson Price had an RBI single scoring LaVance Anderson, while Manny Acevedo scored the second run on a Bryan error. The third and final run was scored by Tyler Brake, who was knocked home on a Tyler Young RBI single. Bryan added a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1 UC after an inning, and things held serve until the top of the fourth, when Union attacked for three more runs. Gabby Juarbe picked up his first RBI of the day on a ground out that scored J.D. Burrell, which was followed up by a Brake two-run home run over the right field fence. The round-tripper, which was the ninth of the year for the senior, made it 6-1 Union after three and a half. Bryan, however, made things interesting as the game went on, scoring a lone run in the fifth, then two more in the sixth to cut the lead down to 6-4 entering the eighth inning. There, Union put the game away, scoring three more runs to go up five. Anderson had an RBI on a bunt that scored Miguel Mendez from third, while Juarbe capped the inning off with a bases clearing, two-RBI double. The run support was more than enough for the Union reliever Jared Tomany to work with over the next two innings, as the Bulldogs rolled on in the tournament with the five-run victory. Overall, Juarbe and Price were the only UC players with multiple hits on the night. Juarbe finished 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Price also went 2-for-5 with an RBI to help a Union offense that pounded out 12 hits on the Bryan pitching staff. On the mound, Luke Collis picked up the win (7-3), tossing seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out three. For Bryan, Cody Rhinehart led the Lions at the dish in a losing effort, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tim Curry, Union College Women's Basketball Coach
Union Eyes Return to Top of AAC in 2013-14 Union College Press Release
The Union women's basketball team returns a lot of experience and has added a lot of youth and talent in the hopes of capturing the Appalachian Athletic Conference championship and returning to the national tournament. The Bulldogs are coming off a 21-10 overall record and 12-6 conference mark. Union advanced to the tournament title game but fell to Reinhardt (Ga.), preventing the Bulldogs from a second consecutive trip to NAIA National Championship Tournament. While it brings back three starters plus another who started 11 games, Union has to replace a two-time NAIA All-American in Lindsey Waters and a three-year starter in Laura Perkins. Waters, a two-time AAC Player of the Year, averaged 16.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game to go with a school-record 92 blocks. Perkins dished out 53 assists and averaged 5.1 points. However, replacing Waters could help make the Bulldogs a deeper and potentially a stronger team. "We have the ability to play a little deeper than we have been because we don't have the all-American player in the lane you'll leave in there for 34-35 minutes a game," said Union coach Tim Curry. In his 13th season, Curry is 230-156 as the Bulldogs coach. He boast a 322-268 career record. "We can split those minutes up more." In all, the Bulldogs look to have the ability to run 10-11 players deep this season, and it begins with the four returning starters. Leading the pack is senior guard Amber Taylor, who is the team's top returning scorer at 11.1 points per game. She also dished out 118 assists, had 65 steals and averaged 3.9 rebounds. Taylor was nearly automatically at the foul line with an 84.3 free-throw percentage, ranking her 12th in NAIA Division II. She turned a solid performance during the AAC Tournament, averaging 21.3 points per game in collecting All-Tournament Team honors. Union also returns Haley Perkins, who was the AAC Freshman of the Year in 2012-13. Starting all 31 games last season, Perkins averaged 10.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game to go with 71 steals, 54 assists and 23 blocks. She made the All-AAC Third Team as well. Back for her senior season is guard Alyson Roberts, who posted 6.7 points and 3.3 rebounds last season along with 61 assists and 33 steals. Sophomore Lydia Nash started 11 of the 31 games she played in, averaging 9.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. Named to the AAC All-Freshman Team, Nash had the best single-game performance by a Bulldog last season as she went 15-of-16 from the field in scoring a team-best 36 points against St. Andrews (N.C.). In all, Union has a solid core returning in its senior and sophomore classes. "With our senior class, we've got a lot of veterans," said Curry, "and we'll look to them for leadership. And our sophomores are a strong group with great experience already." In addition to Taylor and Roberts, Marah Rice is also a senior who's played integral roles for Union over the years. Rice started one game out of the 30 she appeared in last season, averaging 2.5 points per game. The sophomore class is packed with talent. After Perkins and Nash, Macy Clontz helped out with 3.4 points per game as she averaged nearly 13 minutes a game. Adreana Jefferson saw almost 10 minutes of action a night last season and contributed 1.6 points and 2.0 rebounds per contest. Taylor will be tasked with the job of running the show as the point guard. In 70 career games, Taylor has shown to be a dual threat with 719 career points and 267 career assists. She is also solid defensively with 130 career steals. "Amber has the ability to be as good as any point we'll see this season," said Curry. Roberts could also see time running the point as well as freshman Reagan King, who could play any of the three perimeter positions. For the most part, Roberts will be the No. 2 guard. Of her 203 career field goals made, 141 are 3-pointers as she owns a career 35.0 shooting percentage from behind the arc. Freshman Jenna Mills could also see plenty of time as the shooting guard. Perkins is the leading candidate to start at the No. 3 position for the Bulldogs, but the versatile 5-foot-10 sophomore could see time as the shooting guard and at the power forward slot. Perkins has the ability to drive the lane but also 36-of-98 (36.7 percent) 3-pointers last season. "As good as she was last season, Haley has only gotten better," the Bulldog coach said. Nash will occupy the post, while Jefferson start at center. "Lydia played well for us last season when Waters was out with her injury," Curry said. "AJ (Jefferson) is our best defender and has really improved her offense. She's becoming a well-rounded ballplayer." Helping out at the 3-, 4- and 5-positions will be Aaliyah Lumson, a 5-foot-10 freshman. Clontz and junior Sarah Scruggs will see minutes on the perimeter and at the No. 4 position. Scruggs saw limited action last year averaged 1.4 points per game and shot 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from 3-point range. As always, the road to an AAC championship will not be an easy one. The Bulldogs are picked to finish third behind co-favorites Tennessee Wesleyan and Milligan (Tenn.). All three teams are ranked in the top 35 in the NAIA with Milligan leading the way at No. 19. "With three teams in the top 35 and another (Reinhardt) who played in the national tournament, it's not going to be easy to win this league," said Curry. "There are 5-7 teams who could come out on top. "The league is really strong," he added, "and it's going to be a challenge to play well every night to put ourselves in contention." With the addition of Truett-McConnell, there are now 11 teams in the AAC. Because of the growth, the 20-game conference schedule gets underway early this season as Union will play at Milligan on Nov. 12. "We don't have a lot of time to get ready, so we are going to have to at the top of our game early on," said Curry. The 2014 AAC Tournament is set for Feb. 26-March 1 at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort and Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
