wkyt.com Kentuckians compete on The Amazing Race
Two longtime friends from Clay County will be among those competing in CBS's upcoming season of "The Amazing Race." They'll face off against ten other teams in a race around the world for a million dollars. The two men say they have a special motivation to win, since one of them just lost his job with Kentucky's Department of Agriculture. "I'm just a laid back guy, like to lay on the couch, watch sports," Mark Jackson explained. Jackson has the opportunity of a lifetime. Along with his friend William "Bopper" Minton, he has a shot at a fortune on the upcoming 20th season of the CBS series, "The Amazing Race." "We're going to get a chance to win a million dollars. Two poor country boys that have never... We're from the other side of the tracks. I'll just put it that way," Jackson said. Minton says he's competing to help pay medical expenses for his seven-year-old daughter who suffers from severe asthma and respiratory problems. Seen in a television interview, wearing the Agriculture Department's Kentucky Proud logo, Jackson says he could use the extra money ever since he lost his non-merit job as a special assistant with the department. "When Phil says go, he's turning loose two thoroughbreds is what he's turning loose," Minton said. "And I want to apologize to all the other teams right now for the actions that's going to be taken because we're not... by any means necessary..." Jackson added, "Listen to me, we have to win this million dollars. We have to." wkyt.com Manchester fire department taking 30 day leave of absence.
Manchester Mayor George Saylor said the fire department was responding to too many calls, and he also declined their request for a paid firefighter position because the city can not afford it. Manchester Fire Chief Jamey Mills says after hearing of a possible new policy that the fire department would not be paged out on calls as the same time as other first responders, he felt the department was not respected by city hall. Mills says this is not a strike, and they still plan on serving their community. Mayor Saylor called a meeting Thursday night with the fire department. After the meeting started, the firefighters responded to a wreck, and the mayor says they did not come back. Mayor Saylor said he asked in writing for the Chief Mill's resignation, but the mayor says Mills has not resigned. www.wkyt.com/wymt/home/headlines/City_fire_department_plans_to_take_30_day_leave_of_absence_140209293.html

WYMT-TV Efforts to get a guardrail on deadly Clay County curve pay off
Along parts of Kentucky 11, in Clay County, crosses serve as chilling reminders of the lives lost along this roadway. Eugene Jackson's daughter Kimberly and grand daughter Gabriella, added their names to the lives lost along this road. Jackson says his daughter, grandchild, and son-in-law hydroplaned and went off the road and into a creek below. The son-in-law was the only one to survive. Since then, this father started a movement to save other lives but he never thought it'd get this far. Jackson calls the newly approved railing a fitting tribute to the lives he lost and a sign of hope for the lives that may be spared. There's no word on when the railing will go up, but Jackson says he was told the money has been set aside for the project and he takes that as a positive sign. www.wkyt.com/news/headlines/Efforts_to_get_guardrail_on_deadly_curve_pay_off_148817485.html?ref=485

WYMT-TV Chilling 911 call after stabbing Reporter: Jerrika Insco
The chilling call only lasts 58 seconds but takes us inside a home where something went terribly wrong. Clay County Magistrate James Lyttle's oldest son made the 911 call after his mother was stabbed. His mom is now fighting for her life and his father is dead in what police are calling an attempted murder suicide. The call came in moments after police say James Lyttle stabbed his wife Sharon but before he shot himself in a shed across the street from his home. Jimmy Lyttle made the chilling 911 call at 6:19 Wednesday morning after his father stabbed his mother with a kitchen knife. At the time, Jimmy and his younger brother Jacob had no idea what had taken place on a typical morning in the Lyttle home with coffee brewing and breakfast on the table. The family and community are left wondering what led up to such a violent crime that left one dead and another fighting for her life. Sharon Lyttle is still at the UK Hospital in serious condition, but her family says she has already made progress and they expect her to pull through soon. WYMT-TV Dezarn, Briggs amoung sixteen officers honored during memorial ceremony
RICHMOND, Ky. - Her hands trembling, her smile grateful, Laurie Sticklen tightly clutched the bright, crisply-folded American flag presented to her. As her husband James Sticklen's name and date of death were read aloud to the mournful silence, Sticklen held the flag close to her heart, her recent grief still weighing on her tiny frame. Sticklen was one of 16 officers honored Tuesday during the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial's 13th annual ceremony. The Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial monument is the only monument in the commonwealth that recognizes all Kentucky peace officers who have been killed in the line of duty. This year's additions bring the total number of names on the monument to 501. Sticklen and Federal Bureau of Investigations Special Agent Timothy Briggs both died in 2011. The other 14 officers were killed in the line of duty between 1869 and 1964. Briggs was jogging with another agent at the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in London, Ky. when he suffered a fatal heart attack. Briggs spent 14 years with the FBI and had a reputation for being a passionate investigator. He won national awards for a drug case that led to more than 60 convictions on drug, vote-buying and corruption charges stemming from Clay County's then-corrupt political circles. Those historical officers whose names were added to the memorial today are: Sheriff Thomas W. Napier, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, died Sept.18, 1869
Patrolman George E. Roberts, Louisville Police Department, died July 7, 1890
Town Marshal Edward Thompson, Hardinsburg Police Department, died Dec.18, 1890
