. Late lead slips away from women's basketball 71-63
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A one-point halftime lead eventually turned into an eight-point margin of defeat, and the University of Pikeville women's basketball team fell short in its bid to record a major upset against No. 4 Shawnee State University on Monday night at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center, losing 71-63. The Bears are now 0-2 in the Mid-South Conference and 1-4 overall, while Shawnee State moves to 2-0 in the Mid-South and 4-1 on their season. UPIKE sophomore forward Brogan Conley led all scorers with 28 points, and recorded eight rebounds for the Bears. Freshman forward Whitney Belle Jackson contributed 12 points and eight rebounds of her own before fouling out with 7:46 remaining. Junior center Lenae Shouse-Stacy had eight rebounds as well to go along with her four points. Senior point guard Megan Mosley tallied six points, five rebounds, and three assists, while freshman guard Christin Haney added 10 points and four rebounds. The Bears played 12 players Monday night, but received only three points from their bench, all from freshman center Nicole Lyons. Shawnee State's junior center Catrice Mitchell notched a double-double, with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with her four steals, two of which came late as UPIKE attempted a last-minute comeback. Sophomore guard Alannah Sheets scored 19 points thanks to 5-of-8 shooting in the first half from the three-point line. Sheets did major damage as a spot-up shooter from the left corner, but adjustments by UPIKE at halftime kept her from scoring in the second half. Abby Ballman, a senior guard, added 13 points (including a half-court buzzer beater to close the first half) and a game-high eight assists. Alex Pohl, a junior forward, added eight more points while snagging 12 rebounds. UPIKE will take to the court again on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when they visit Indiana University-Southeast. They will have to wait until December 1st when they travel to University of the Cumberlands to have another shot at their first conference win. Shawnee State also goes on the road Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Julio Costello Classic in Crestview Hills, where they will play Maryville College. . Women's basketball falls at IUS UPike Press Release
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Too many turnovers and not nearly enough free throws cost the University of Pikeville on Saturday in a 77-47 loss at Indiana-Southeast. The Bears suffered through 29 turnovers in the game and were credited with only nine assists in their fourth straight loss. In addition, they managed only 4-of-16 shooting from the free throw line and suffered a loss in renewing the rivalry the schools shared when both were members of the KIAC. All of that made the 40-30 rebounding advantage – and 15 offensive rebounds – inconsequential. IUS (5-3) took a 35-21 lead to the half and then clicked on all cylinders in the final 20 minutes. The Grenadiers hit 51.9 percent from the floor, including 5-of-9 from the arc, and added 9-of-11 shooting from the line to extend their lead. Freshman Christin Haney led the Bears in scoring for the first time in her career, flipping in 13 points. She was the only Bear to make a free throw in the game, going 4-of-8 from the line. Sophomore Brogan Conley followed up her career-high 28 against Shawnee State on Monday night with 12 points and six rebounds, while freshman Whitney Belle Jackson tossed in 10 markers and added eight boards. Freshman Sydni Wainscott came off the bench to lead the Bears with five assists in the loss. Grenadier guard Ashmere Woods hit three three-point shots to lead all scorers with 20 points. Forward Megan Murphy followed with 15, hitting three treys herself, and led everybody with nine rebounds as well. Guard Heather Wheat scored 12 points and had a game-high six assists. Pikeville (1-5) will be back in action Tuesday night when it hosts Alice Lloyd College at 6 p.m. The game will be the first of four played this season at the UPIKE Gym and is a rematch of Pikeville's 78-53 win in Pippa Passes on Nov. 8. As part of its initiative to raise awareness for Judi's Place for Kids, everyone bringing a new child's blanket or a stuffed animal to the game will be admitted free of charge.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville outscored visiting Alice Lloyd College 47-33 in the second half to pick up an 80-70 win Tuesday night. Pikeville (2-5) scored the game's first nine points and expanded its lead to as many as 12 in the first half before the Lady Eagles mounted a comeback and took a 37-33 lead to the half. They began pumping the ball inside and when freshman Nicole Lyons scored on a layup with 12:04 left the lead was double digits (17-7) for the first time. The lead grew to 12 (26-14) with 7:36 left when freshman Whitney Belle Jackson scored inside, but that would prove to be the biggest lead of the night. The Lady Eagles scored seven of the first nine second-half points, and when freshman Haley Smith nailed a jumper with 17:28 left, the lead was 44-35. .
WILLIAMSBURG Ky. – The University of the Cumberlands used two runs that totaled 17-2 in its favor in the first 9:35 of the second half to take control and pull away for a 74-47 win over the University of Pikeville Thursday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. It was a poor shooting night for both teams. Cumberlands got the win despite hitting only 34.8 percent from the field and 29.6 percent from the arc. Pikeville, meanwhile, sank only 30 percent overall and 26.3 percent from deep. But the home team forced 26 turnovers and committed only 10, giving it 19 more attempts from the floor. Pikeville (2-6, 0-3 in the Mid-South Conference) led 28-26 at the half and a layup by freshman Whitney Belle Jackson to open the second frame made it a four-point edge. Cumberlands (7-1, 2-1), however, immediately had its first run, scoring 10 of the next dozen points. Junior Dace Bicane had four points during the run, and when junior Vernisha Moss turned in a three-point play with 16:42 left, the Patriots had turned the four-point deficit into a four-point (36-32) lead. The lead was four (42-38) after Jackson split a pair of free throws with 13:24 left, but it would be 3:21 before the Bears scored again, and in the interim Cumberlands ripped off seven straight, and when sophomore Jackie Alexander nailed a three-point shot with 10:25 left, the Pats had their first double-figure lead of the night at 49-38. COLUMBIA, Ky. – No. 14 Lindsey Wilson used two double-figure runs in the first half to blow by Pikeville 75-60 Saturday afternoon at the Biggers Sports Center. PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville took another tough Mid-South Conference loss Thursday night, falling to the University of Rio Grande 80-69. Senior guard Kaylee Helton led all scorers with 21 points for Rio Grande and complement them with three blocks, three assists and two steals. Jayvonna Saddler, a junior forward, added 16 points and 10 boards for a double-double. Junior guard Shardae Morrison-Fountain ran the offense well with 12 points and a game-high six assists, while freshman forward Tinesha Taylor added 12 points herself. Sophomore guard Kate Hammond added 10 points for the Red Storm, which improved to 17-10 on the season and evened its conference mark at 7-7. Pikeville (4-24) was led offensively by freshman forward Whitney Jackson, who had 15 points and seven rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench before suffering an injury midway through the second half. Sophomore Brogan Conley did her best to step up in Jackson's absence, finishing with 13 points and five rebounds. The start of the game had the Bears faithful uneasy as Rio Grande was able to begin with a quick 11-4 run in which the Bears appeared confused defensively. Following a timeout and regrouping of the troops by Bears Head Coach Bill Watson, UPIKE was able to score seven unanswered points to tie the game, then took the lead on Jackson's free throw. UPIKE led for most of the first half thanks to a strong, physical defense that was able to stop Rio Grande's crisp passing and force them into attempting three-pointers, which they went 2-of-9 on in the first half and 4-14 for the game. The Red Storm crept back into the game and held a brief lead, but went into the locker room trailing the Bears 35-33. In the second half, things began to fall off for the young Bears. Rio Grande, which shot only 43.3% from the field in the first half, was able to get more quality shots and hit 64.3% as a team in the second. After seeing his team give up 15 unanswered points, Coach Watson called a timeout trailing 52-37. The Bears will finish their season with two home games, first against WVU Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Red Storm next play Saturday at 2 p.m. as well, when they travel to U.Va.-Wise.
