University of Pikeville Basketball
Halloween Hoopla coming Tuesday University of Pikeville Press Release
The University of Pikeville's annual kickoff to basketball season is coming this Tuesday. Halloween Hoopla will be held October 23 at the UPIKE Gym. Beginning at 7:15, the band, cheer and dance teams will be performing, while the men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced and see action. In addition, shooting contests, a free-throw and three-point contest and a Halloween costume contest will be held. Also, music and trivia contests will be held throughout the event. Last season didn't go as planned for Coach Kelly Wells and the Bears, who came into the season ranked No. 1 in the country off of the 2011 national title. Wells and his staff have a solid base of returners and some very talented newcomers this season. Trevor Setty was the MVP of the 2011 national tournament and averaged 15.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last year. Setty was first-team All-Mid-South Conference and an honorable mention All-American and his 1,199 points has him 19th on the all-time scoring list at the school. He will be joined by junior point guard Josh Whitaker. The Hazard native averaged 4.8 points and 2.7 assists last season. Deuce Briscoe, who scored more than 1,000 points in three seasons at the NCAA Div. I level, and 2010 Mr. Basketball Elisha Justice headlines the talented list of newcomers. Briscoe played at Charlotte last season while Justice spent two seasons playing for Rick Pitino at Louisville. That duo will be joined in a talented backcourt by 6-0 senior Chris Johnson, a transfer from St. Francis, Penn. Coach Bill Watson's women's basketball team will look to rebound from a disappointing 2011-12 season. The Bears return junior Brogan Conley and sophomore Whitney Belle Jackson from last year's team. Conley is a 6-0 junior guard from Paintsville who averaged 12.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game a season ago. Jackson is a 6-2 forward who averaged 10.9 points and 5.1 rebounds. Among the newcomers this season will be Peyton Wright, a freshman from Owsley County who scored more than 2,000 points in high school. Shooting guard Callisha Johnson and point guard Jayme Jackson are transfers from Motlow State (Tenn.) Community College, while sophomore Natalie Tunnell was a member of the Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) team that went 27-6 and played in the NAIA Div. I women's basketball national tournament last March in Frankfort.

Dutch junior Rianne Hofstraat swished a three-pointer with 1:24 left to put the Patriots up for the first and only lead change of the game, 58-56. The Bears' upset bid was fueled largely by strong, team-based defense. Harshly limited shot selection for St. Catharine meant the Patriots finished the first half shooting just 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) from the floor. A combination of two things however would be the Bears' undoing. Firstly, the Patriots' offense was able to execute much more easily in the second half, and finished the game 21-of-55 (38.2 percent) from the field. Secondly, the Bears aggression on defense meant they were called for 26 fouls to the Patriots' 12, resulting in 32 free throws being taken by St. Catharine compared to just 13 for UPIKE. The Patriots were lead in scoring by senior center Janae Howard, who came off the bench to record 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in 25 minutes of action. Senior forward Reilly Poirier narrowly missed a double-double, with 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Calhoun also added 10 points for the Patriots. Freshman forward Peyton Wright continued to impress for UPIKE, going for 13 points and six rebounds without turning the ball over once. Junior point guard Jayme Jackson added 12 points along with four rebounds as well as four assists. Senior guard Sally Roberts closed out the list of Bears in double-figures, adding 11 points. Former Clay County Lady Tiger Whitney Jackson has 2 points and 5 rebounds in only 18 minutes as she battled foul trouble and finished the game with four fouls. The Bears will be looking to make amends when they take on arch-rival Georgetown College on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the East Kentucky Expo Center. The Patriots will continue to ride what is now a six-game winning streak into Saturday when the challenge U.Va.-Wise at 2 p.m.

Whitney Belle Jackson leads UPike with 15 points and eight rebounds University of Pikeville Press Release
No. 16 Georgetown College used a big second-half run to ease past the University of Pikeville 77-52 Saturday afternoon at the East Kentucky Expo Center. Faced with an aggressive Tigers defense which forced 17 of UPIKE's 21 turnovers, the Bears had to shoot from behind the arc for most of the game, but finished only 1-of-21 (4.8%) from long range. A jump shot by junior Brogan Conley pulled the Bears within six (34-28) with 17:44 to play in the game. But the Tigers nailed the next 12 points of the game. Only three Tigers scored during the stretch, with senior forward Devon King flipping in five, and when junior Lissa Jonas scored on a layup with 1:35 to play, the lead was 46-28. Georgetown was led by junior guard and reigning National Player of the Week Kourtney Tyra, who finished with a game-high 21 points including a perfect performance of 11-of-11 at the free throw line. Tyra was supported well courtesy of senior forward Devon Golden, who scored 14 points and recorded four steals, and junior guard Andrea Howard's seven points and nine rebounds. For the Bears, sophomore center Whitney Belle Jackson led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward Brogan Conley added six points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Sally Roberts, sophomore guard Christin Haney and junior forward Callisha Johnson all also finished with six points. The Bears, now at 5-12 overall (2-7 in Mid-South Conference play), travel to No. 7 Cumberland University on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. UPIKE will be looking to avenge last week's 72-58 home loss to the Bulldogs. Georgetown meanwhile advances to 12-6 overall (6-3 in MSC) and will be traveling to U.Va.-Wise on Monday's Martin Luther King Day holiday.

Cumberland opens strong in win over Bears University of Pikeville Press Release
Number 7 Cumberland University made short work of the University of Pikeville Thursday night in a 60-39 win at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center. The Bulldogs put the clamps on the Bears early on and never looked back in picking up their 19th win in 20 outings, their 10th compared to one Mid-South Conference loss. Cumberland scored the game's first 14 points, forcing eight Bear turnovers before allowing a point. When sophomore Whitney Belle Jackson finally scored with 12:02 left on a layup, it ended an 0-for-7 stretch to start the game and cut the lead to 14-2. By the half, Cumberland had allowed the Bears only four field goals and held a 36-9 lead. The second half was much better for the Bears, who outscored the Bulldogs 30-24. Pikeville limited Cumberland to only 35.5 percent shooting and 1-of-14 from the arc in the second half. Pikeville (5-13, 2-9) had two players in double figures. Jackson led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds, while junior Brogan Conley followed with 10 points and seven rebounds. Senior Sally Roberts had five of her team's seven steals in the loss. Cumberland had a balanced attack that allowed only two players reach double digits. Senior guard Josette Campbell tossed in 12 while junior London Elie added 10. Pikeville will remain on the road Saturday, visiting the University of the Cumberlands. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in the O. Wayne Rollins Center.

Cumberlands wins tough battle with Bears University of Pikeville Press Release
The University of Cumberlands used an 8-3 run in the middle of the second half to finally establish some separation and knock off the University of Pikeville 73-64 Saturday afternoon at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. Pikeville took a 45-44 lead when senior Sally Roberts nailed a three from the corner with 9:35 to play. It came off a pass from freshman Peyton Wright and gave Roberts her fifth point of the game. Cumberlands (13-8 overall, 5-7 in the Mid-South Conference) seem to right itself, and over the next three minutes regained the lead. When junior Jill Herman scored with 6:27 to play, the Patriots led 53-47. Pikeville continued to battle, but could get no closer the rest of the way in falling to 5-14 overall, 2-10 in the league. Unlike Thursday night when the Bears managed only nine first-half points, they stormed out of the gates to score the first nine of the night. Cumberlands missed its first seven shots in the game, and when sophomore Whitney Belle Jackson scored inside off a dish from junior Callisha Johnson, the lead was 9-0 less than three minutes into the game. But Cumberlands soon found its range. After hitting 3-of-21 to start the game, the Patriots closed the half 7-of-12, and by forcing some 12 first-half turnovers, the home team took a 31-28 lead into the half. Cumberlands finished the game 23-of-68 from the field and 9-of-35 (25.7 percent) from the arc. Pikeville shot 44.2 percent overall and was 3-of-9 from the arc. The difference, however, came from the line, where Pikeville managed to make only 15-of-32 (46.9 percent) for the game. Johnson led the Bears with 20 points in the loss, adding four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Junior Brogan Conley followed with 13 points and nine rebounds. Jackson tossed in 10 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Junior Jill Herman led all scorers with 26 points, pulling down seven rebounds and four assists. She was joined in double figures by senior Dace Bicane and junior Erica Lane with 11 each. Junior Jackie Alexander tossed in 10. Junior guard Jessica Upchurch led the Patriots on the glass with 13 to go with nine markers. Pikeville will have little turnaround time, heading to Montgomery, W.Va., to play WVU Tech on Monday night.

Threes to tie rattle out in loss at Tech University of Pikeville Press Release
A pair of three-point shots to tie the game in the closing seconds fell off as the University of Pikeville fell to WVU Tech 64-61 Monday night. Pikeville (5-15) took a five-point lead with 3:19 to play when sophomore Christin Haney nailed a three to make it 60-55. It was Haney's fourth successful three-point shot in her first five tries as the Lexington native led the Bears with 16 points while pulling down six rebounds. From there, however, Tech scored nine of the game's final 10 points, getting five of them on seven free throws in the final 1:51. With the score tied at 61, a free throw by Courtney Sturdivant with 14 seconds left gave the home team the lead for the final time. The deadlock was the 11th of the game. Sturdivant missed the second toss but the Golden Bears got the rebound. After another foul, Amber Tully sank both free throws with 13 seconds left. Tully led all scorers with 24 points, nailing 6-of-13 from the arc. Pikeville was only 24-of-67 (35.8) percent from the floor, including 5-of-16 from deep. The Bears were only 8-of-14 from the line. Former Clay County Lady Tiger Whitney Belle Jackson finished the game with four points and three rebounds. Pikeville returns home on Thursday night – and to Mid-South Conference play – when it hosts Bluefield College at 6 p.m. at the Expo Center. On Sunday, Indiana-Southeast visits at 3 at the UPike Gym.

Bears knock off Bluefield, 87-80 University of Pikeville Press Release
The University of Pikeville women’s basketball team held off a strong rally by the Bluefield College Rams to cap a convincing 87-80 triumph Thursday night at the East Kentucky Expo Center. The Bears pick up a much needed Mid-South Conference win to bring them to 6-15 overall, 3-10 in the Mid-South Conference. By driving inside for most of the first half, the Bears were able to put several key frontline players for the Rams into foul trouble early. This also had the added benefit of creating an advantage in free throw shooting (25-of-39 for UPIKE; 10-of-20 for the Rams). Pikeville had the statistical oddity of having more steals (10) than turnovers (nine). The Rams turned the ball over 12 times in falling to 14-9 on the season, 6-7 in the league. The Bears were led in scoring by junior forward Calisha Johnson, who continued her impressive run of form with a career-high 28 points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Kayla Day came off the bench to put in 11 points, matching her career-best total she had in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 5. Day’s senior counterpart Sally Roberts added 10 points and five assists, with fellow starter Jayme Jackson contributing a further five assists in addition to her nine points. Junior forward Brogan Conley scored 10 while pulling down six rebounds, and senior forward Anne Klee anchored the Bears defensively with four steals. Former Clay County Lady Tiger Whitney Belle Jackson was limited to only 14 minutes of action before she fouled out. She finished the game with 8 points and 5 rebounds. The Rams’ offense was led by senior guard Ashley White and junior forward Janee Simmons, both of whom had 22 points. Simmons came up just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds before fouling out of the contest late. White, on the other hand, played the entire 40 minutes without being substituted and produced five assists for the Rams. Junior guard Tequila McNeal was able to score 13 points while recording a game-high seven assists. The Bears can now take some momentum into Sunday’s 3 p.m. game against Indiana University-Southeast at the UPike Gym. Bluefield, meanwhile, travels to U.Va-Wise on Saturday at 2 p.m.

16-point run leads Bears past Grenadiers University of Pikeville Press Release
The University of Pikeville used a 16-0 run midway through the second half to knock off Indiana-Southeast 74-66 Sunday afternoon at the UPike Gym. IUS (12-11) went on a 10-2 run to take a 44-41 lead, but the Bears ripped off 16 unanswered points to take control of the game. Pikeville improved to 7-15 with their second straight win. After leading most of the first half, IUS took a lead and was on top 24-23 after senior Ashmere Woods hit a jumper with 3:41 to play to end a 7-0 run. But the Bears closed the half with eight of the final 10 points. Sophomore Christin Haney had all eight for the Bears, including a pair of three-point buckets to start the trend. Pikeville wins 66-62 over No. 13 Georgetown College University of Pikeville Press Release
Junior guard Callisha Johnson fired in 31 points and scored the go-ahead basket with 18 seconds left to give the University of Pikeville a 66-62 win over No. 13 Georgetown College Thursday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gymasium. After Georgetown missed a shot to tie, freshman Peyton Wright went to the line and sank a free throw with 5.8 seconds left to make it a three-point lead. After a Tiger timeout, she made it a two-possession game with the second toss. Wright was equally solid; after a scoreless first period, she finished with 15 markers and 13 rebounds while blocking four shots. The win made the Bears 8-15 on the season and 4-10 in the Mid-South Conference as they battle to qualify for the league's eight-team tournament at the end of the month. It was also the third straight win for the Bears since Coach Bill Watson informed the school of his intention to retire at the end of the season. Georgetown fell to 16-8 on the season, 10-5 in the league. It appeared Georgetown was going to have an easy go of it and led 28-16 after a basket by Jessica Foster with 5:17 to play in the half. But after that, the Tigers didn't score again in the half while the Bears rolled up 14 unanswered points. Whitney Belle Jackson had four while the torrid Johnson flipped in the other 10, going 6-of-6 from the line during the stretch. When she tossed in a pair from the stripe with 28.4 seconds left in the half, she had 20 and the Bears had a 30-28 lead which they took to the break. Pikeville won the game while shooting only 40.3 percent overall and 23.1 percent from the arc. They did, however, hit 9-of-10 from the line. Georgetown lost thanks to shooting only 31.1 percent overall and 4-of-25 (16 percent) from the arc. While the Bears took care of business from the line, the Tigers were only 12-of-20. Pikeville will remain on the road, visiting St. Catharine College on Saturday at 2 p.m. Georgetown will be home on Saturday, hosting U.Va.-Wise.

With the win, the Bears improved to 5-11 in the league, trailing the 6-10 Blue Raiders for eighth place with four conference games remaining. Only the top eight teams will play in this year's league tournament. “We're in it now,” said Coach Bill Watson, who guided his team to its fifth win in six outings – 3-1 in the league – since announcing his resignation at the end of the season. “We're right where we want to be.
