The Times-Tribune Cardinals hope to slow down Russell County’s Britt By Chris Parsons, Staff Writer
If you like offense, this week’s match-up between South Laurel and Russell County could be the game for you. Last week, Russell County knocked off Whitley County 49-20 and the Cardinals beat Lynn Camp 54-6. With a combined 103 points scored between the two teams. Though South Laurel was pegged as a passing threat coming into the season, the Cardinals ran for 338 yards during their 55-6 win over the Wildcats. South Laurel totaled 556 yards on offense thanks to Landon Bray (103 yards on nine carries) and the big play ability of Jason Mitchell (54-yard touchdown run). If they hope to keep up with Russell County, they’ll have to have a repeat performance. The Lakers tallied 230 yards on the ground, 123 of which came via Britt. thetimestribune.com/sports/x252498037/Cardinals-hope-to-slow-down-Russell-County-s-Britt

The Clay County Tigers will travel to Log Mountain Friday October 5th to take on Bell County at 7:30 PM in a non-district game.
The Middlesboro Daily News Bobcats take on Middlesboro in the City/County Bowl
When Middlesboro and Bell County met in last year’s City/County Bowl, the electricity in the air was palpable. The intensity of this rivalry created an atmosphere that even surpasses what you find in the playoffs. The Yellow Jackets rode that emotion in the early going and were hanging with the Bobcats, down just 21-14 with the ball in the second quarter. But Bell got a big interception from Cory Davenport to turn the momentum and went on to romp 63-20. This year the City/County Bowl moves to Log Mountain and Friday night we’ll find out if that intensity was a product of the teams’ first meeting in eight years. Once again the Bobcats are considered a heavy favorite, but rivalry games tend to bring out the best in both teams and anything can happen. Both teams come in at 1-1 and Jacket coach Randy Frazier said that off the field it’s a friendly rivalry between the schools. Frazier also acknowledged that the Jackets have a tough test in front of them. The Bobcats bring one of the top rushing attacks in the state, led by the senior tandem of Ryan Collett and Jonathan Polly. Bell will be without senior quarterback Corey Oslonian, who suffered a knee injury last week. Freshman Peyton Collett will be starting under center. Frazier said the key for the Jackets is containing that running game. A difficult task as Bell’s offensive line features seniors Tan Hudson (6-6, 320), Hunter Marcum (6-4, 270) and Jonathan Burnett (6-3, 230). Bell faced two of the state’s top passing attacks in the first two weeks and performed well against both. The run defense will be key and that part of the Bobcat defense is led by senior linebackers D.J. Warwick and Corey Lee. Ends Jeffrey Saylor and Dylan Cox will also have a lot of responsibility defending Middlesboro’s Wing-T. In addition to being the City/County Bowl — Friday’s action kicks off with Pineville taking on Williamsburg at 6 p.m. — this is also the home opener for the Bobcats. The Times-Tribune Panthers will face tough test in Friday’s Appalachian Bowl By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The Knox Central Panthers are looking to go 3-0 for the first time under coach Scottie Russell, but to do so, they’re going to have to find a way to get past Johnson Central. The Golden Eagles don’t possess the running talents of former tailback J.J. Jude, but still return a solid nucleus of talent that has surprised many by defeating North Carolina’s Hayesville High School (39-7) and Perry Central (44-36). Knox Central is coming off a 14-7 win over Karns, Tenn. and Russell said there are a lot of things his team needs to improve on, despite the Panthers’ 2-0 record The Panthers enter the game with tailback Jonathan Gist leading the way with 310 rushing yards on 47 carries while senior tailback Jeffrey Canady isn’t too far back with 214 rushing yards on 27 attempts. Quarterback Devon Evans started the season red-hot, completing eight-of-11 pass attempts during Week One’s 40-21 victory over South Laurel, but threw some interceptions last week. He has completed 12-of-23 pass attempts for 240 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. thetimestribune.com/sports/x143113583/Panthers-will-face-tough-test-in-Friday-s-Appalachian-Bowl

Times-Tribune Cardinals searching for a win By Chris Parsons, Staff Writer
The South Laurel Cardinals will be looking for a win against Clay County this week, but head coach Larry Welch said the match-up will be a tough one for his team. The Tigers boast a two-man attack with the running game, using Sam Carr and Joey Dezarn when it comes to eating up yards. Carr leads the team with 285 yards and four touchdowns on 37 carries, while Dezarn had tallied 256 yards and a pair of TDs on 29 carries. Together, the two of them combine for 180 yards per game so far this season. For South Laurel, the offense was believed to be a strong point coming into the season with the return of quarterback Tyler Dethridge expected to lead the way. So far, the Cardinals are averaging 29 points per game, but last week was Welch and company only mustered 13 points, all of which came courtesy of plays by Jason Mitchell. Mitchell scored on a 24-yard catch and an 81-yard touchdown run late in the game. Kickoff for Friday’s game is set for 7:30 p.m. thetimestribune.com/sports/x774500832/Cardinals-searching-for-a-win

Kentucky Guard, Clay County's Jacob Hyde gears up early for upcoming Border Bowl by Sgt. Scott Raymond, Kentucky National Guard Public Affairs Office
Kentucky high school football fans received a unique early look at the 2013 Border Bowl during a press conference hosted by the Kentucky National Guard at Boone National Guard Center in Frankfort, Ky., September 5, 2012. For the first time, a select group of players were announced to the “Be The Elite” Team Gridiron, months prior to the playing of the interstate all-star game that is scheduled for January 12, 2013. The Border Bowl, in its sixth year, is sponsored by the National Guard and pits some of Kentucky’s best high school football players against the best from state neighbor and rival Tennessee. Officials from the Kentucky National Guard worked with state high schools to coordinate the countdown to the Border Bowl with the Kentucky Guard’s new “Be The Elite” campaign. The goal was to tie in the star football players selected with the recruiting push to find the best and brightest to wear the uniform of the Kentucky National Guard. The “Be The Elite” program was set up to qualify only the strongest on candidates that represent Kentucky’s finest and runs through September. “Today was a significant step to make the Border Bowl a year round event,” said Freddie Maggard, Kentucky National Guard Community Outreach Coordinator. “The professionalism displayed sends a distinct message that the National Guard Border Bowl is a first class operation and I’m very proud of all those involved.” Local sports broadcaster and radio show host Larry Glover was the guest speaker. He spoke of the tradition of the Border Bowl and the continued rivalry between the two states, calling it an amazing opportunity for young players to be apart of something bigger than themselves. Twelve players were selected to the team, including four on hand for the event. Clay County High School senior, Jacob Hyde was in awe of the press conference, and the excitement built by the media in attendance and the location in a helicopter hangar on the National Guard base. “I never expected to experience something like this,” he said. Hyde even had the chance to sit in the pilot’s seat of a UH-60 Blackhawk, which he said he could barely fit into to. The aircraft’s cockpit wasn’t designed or the 6-foot, 2-inch, 313-pound frame of the defensive tackle. Hyde simply looks forward to finishing his season strong at Clay Co., and enjoying his moment in the Border Bowl. Hyde has committed to wear blue next year, playing football at Commonwealth Stadium. “It’s really a great honor to represent Kentucky and the University of Kentucky,” he said.

herald-leader.com Clay County lineman blossoming into 'special' recruit for Kentucky By Mike Fields
The bright red pickup with a black "Friends of Coal" license plate that reads "Hyde" is one of most recognizable vehicles in Clay County, with 6-foot-21/2, 325-pound Jacob Hyde behind the wheel and flashing a smile as bright as the truck's headlights. Hyde, whose dad died when he was 4, credits his mother, Patricia, for instilling the right values in him. He also has been positively influenced by Clay County assistant Mark Deaton, whom Hyde calls "a father figure to me on and off the field. Deaton first took notice of Hyde when he was an eighth-grader. The big kid was playing middle school basketball, but he was already working out diligently in the high school weight room. After Deaton took him to a UK basketball game, the coach and player struck up a father-and-son relationship that is now family-strong. Deaton took Hyde to summer camps and combines so colleges would notice this huge player's huge upside. Before his junior season, Hyde attended UK's camp, and was so impressive that Joker Phillips offered him a scholarship. Hyde didn't make an immediate decision, however, because he wasn't sure he could play at that level. Hyde's self-confidence got a boost this summer when he was selected and played for Team USA in all-star games in Texas. He's been invited back to play for Team USA again in February. Hyde won't get to UK until next summer, so before he becomes a big man on campus, he'll continue to be a big man in Clay County. Knox Central 48 Clinton (TN) 28
Knox Central tailback Jeffrey Canady continues to put up impressive numbers, as his 322 yards on 24 carries and five touchdowns helped guide the Panthers past Clinton, Tenn., 48-28 Friday. With Jonathan Gist sitting out the entire second half due to precautionary reasons, Canady and the Knox Central offensive line took over, as the Panthers improved to a school-record 5-0 start. One week after limiting a Russell County squad averaging 54 points on the season to just 21 points last Friday night, Pulaski County picked up the defensive intensity even a couple of more notches, hosting the Rockcastle County Rockets. Pulaski County’s ‘D’ pitched a shutout on Friday evening, and after trailing the Rockets 2-0 at the half, Riley Hall and company got the offense going after the intermission, helping the Maroons even their record on the year to 2-2 with a 20-2 victory over ‘The Rock’. Despite being inside Pulaski’s 20-yard line three different times in the first half, the Rockets offense couldn’t put points on the board, and in the end, that’s what bit coach Scott Parkey’s club in the 20-2 setback to PC. Jeffrey Canady
TheTimesTribune Canady making a push for 2012 Mr. Football Award By John Stepp
Knox Central’s Jeffrey Canady has been the most talked about player in the mountains this football season, and that talking is growing more and more with each game. Not only is Canady Knox Central’s all-time leading rusher (2,670 yards), receiver (2,361), and scorer (68 touchdowns), he has helped lead them to their best start in the history of the school, compiling a 5-0 record this year. Doing his part, Canady has also rushed for 952 on just 91 carries while scoring 15 touchdowns. With the phenomenal season Canady has pieced together, so far he has garnered a widespread buzz as one of the leading candidates for Kentucky’s Mr. Football. His coach, Scott Russell, was Mr. Football in 1991 after leading the state in rushing his senior season and has offered some advice to his star player. Despite all of Canady’s achievements and accolades, at the forefront of his goals for the season is a district championship. thetimestribune.com/sports/x766434533/Canady-making-a-push-for-2012-Mr-Football-Award

Knox Central 12 Harlan County 6
It was a clash between two of the top teams in the mountains on Friday night when the Knox Central Panthers fought to a 12-6 victory over the Harlan County Black Bears. The win gave the undefeated Panthers their sixth in a row, helping them to their best start in school history. This is the second time this season Knox Central has knocked off a highly touted opponent, defeating perennial power Johnson Central three weeks ago. With most of the hype surrounding the Knox Central football team stemming from the play of star running back Jeffrey Canady, another hero stepped up for the Panthers on Friday in senior quarterback Devin Evans. Evans was a dual threat for Knox Central, passing for 99 yards, while adding 87 yards on the ground and a 52-yard kickoff return. The win over the Black Bears was just what Knox Central needed to carry momentum into their district schedule. The Panthers will open district play next week, traveling to Clay County. thetimestribune.com/sports/x325727649/Panthers-flex-muscles-and-improve-to-6-0-after-defeating-Harlan-County-12-6 October 5 - Bell County - away - 7:30 PM

While some recruits get nervous when their school gets off to a rough start and coaching rumors being to circulate, three-star Manchester (Ky.) defensive tackle Jacob Hyde has no doubts about where he'll be going. Hyde says he's status is so solid, that he's not even hearing from other schools anymore. He's shifted his full focus to leading Clay County to the playoffs. Hyde has attended both of Kentucky's home games this season as an unofficial visitor, and said that if he takes an official visit during the year it will be for the Samford game on November 17. footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1414440

Nick Britt
High school notebook: Russell County football on track for rare achievements By Mike Fields, herald-leader
For 20 years Russell County bobbed along as a .500 football program, posting a 107-107 record from 1990 to 2009. But the Lakers have found success the last couple seasons, going 15-2, including a 6-0 mark this year. Nick Britt a 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior, with 4.5 speed, has rushed for more than 4,600 yards and 75 touchdowns in his career. Russell County, rated Number 21 in the state by Dave Cantrall, has talent surrounding Britt. Barton Mann, a 6-4, 205-pound senior quarterback, has thrown for 2,100 yards and 18 TDs over the last two years. Junior speedster Evan Fletcher complements Britt at running back. Junior Blake Ellis has 1,100 receiving yards and 12 TD catches. Senior Lucas Williams has 12 career field goals, including a 49-yarder last week. Russell County history includes one team (1983) that had an undefeated regular season, and only two teams that have won a playoff game (in 2000 and 2009) in 43 years. The Lakers have a shot at both achievements. They appear to be on a collision course with unbeaten Class 4A district rival Knox Central. They play on Oct. 19. But Sharp isn't about to look past Rockcastle County and Clay County the next two weeks. www.kentucky.com/2012/09/27/2352838/high-school-notebook-russell-co.html#storylink=cpy

Times-Tribune Panthers start new season By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The Knox Central Panthers might be off to their best start ever at 6-0, but that doesn’t mean anything at the present time, according to head coach Scottie Russell. Knox Central will get a tough test Friday at Clay County when the Panthers will pay a visit to play the Tigers. Even though Knox Central has been making history with a 6-0 start, Russell said his players want to continue the feats by winning the school’s first district championship. Knox Central is coming off an impressive 12-6 win over Harlan County, which has garnered the Panthers a No. 5 ranking in Class 4A, but Russell said his team's focus is now shifted to Clay County. The Tigers (3-2) are led by University of Kentucky signee Jacob Hyde, who has been impressive on both the offensive and defensive line while Sam Carr leads Clay County with 708 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Joey Dezarn has 319 yards on the ground while quarterback Ryan Holland has completed 34 of 45 pass attempts for 545 yards and four touchdowns. Even though the Tigers have put up some impressive numbers individually, so has Knox Central. The Panthers are led by senior Jeffrey Canady, who has 1,054 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns on the ground, while teammate Jonathan Gist has 688 rushing yards and five TDs. You also have to keep an eye on quarterback Devon Evans, who has rushed for 300 yards while passing for 580 yards and five touchdowns. thetimestribune.com/sports/x403295623/Panthers-start-new-season

Even in the final week of the regular season, Boyle County has a lot to play for. The Rebels travel to Whitley County before hosting Clay County in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs. But Boyle coach Larry French doesn’t want his team to look ahead to Clay and lose any momentum they’ve built up at the end of the year. Boyle comes in averaging 39 points and 450 yards per game. Quarterback Casey Whittle has put together a solid season going 76 for 148 for 1,289 yards and 17 touchdowns with just three interceptions.
