2013 BOYS’ SWEET 16® CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SET FOR SUNDAY KHSAA News Releases
For the first time in the 95-year history of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16®, the tournament championship game will be played sometime other than Saturday night. The traditional state tournament format will undergo a transformation for the 2013 event due to potential scheduling conflicts with Rupp Arena. “We received a request a few days ago from the University to consider other Saturday (and potentially Sunday) alternatives in the event that the final schedule for 2012-2013 necessitated the Wildcats playing at home on Saturday, March 9,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “The 2013 scheduling has been a constantly evolving challenge for a while as we had previously surrendered our contracted dates for the arena to allow UK to host the NCAA Second/Third round that year.” The semifinals, a doubleheader that has been played on Saturday morning for more than fifty years, will move to Saturday night while the championship will be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The opening and quarterfinal rounds will remain on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as in previous years. Exact tip-off times for the semifinals have not been confirmed and will be announced at a later date. The decision was made on the part of the Association to eliminate the potential scheduling conflict with the University of Kentucky men’s basketball program on Saturday, March 9 and measure affects the 2013 tournament only. “It is important that the two largest and most tradition rich clients sharing the arena work together on a solution when there comes that time that we both need the facility,” Tackett noted. “They say that necessity is the mother of invention,” Tackett continued. “While we all like to be reverent to tradition it’s not a bad idea to try something new and we have certainly been willing to do that in the last few years. The format of our tournament, particularly Saturday, has been a discussion topic for years with coaches, fans and media. Circumstances have created both a need and an opportunity for us to try something different for one year and we will see what happens with it. The worst that can happen is we go back to the formula we know has worked for most of our 94 years.” Tackett emphasized the reason the Association decided to make the change at this time is twofold. First, it gives longtime fans of the event ample time to make changes to travel and lodging plans in Lexington for the week of March 6-10 prior to any final announcement by the SEC as to the Kentucky schedule. Second, since both the KHSAA and University of Kentucky have a scheduling overlap, the KHSAA’s preemptive decision is a simple case of wanting to be a good neighbor and partner to not only to the staff of Rupp Arena, but also the University, which has assisted the Association over the years through use of its facilities and personnel for championship events. “We appreciate the KHSAA not only for their working with the University on hosting the second/third rounds of the NCAA, but in helping through this unprecedented schedule conflict,” said DeWayne Peevy, Executive Associate Athletic Director / External Operations at the University of Kentucky. “We both need the arena and in this way, we both have access.” The format of the Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16® at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green the following week will not change. “Without the necessity due to scheduling conflicts, we did not think it would be fair to the participants and fans of the girls’ tournament to revise that schedule, and arbitrarily switch them to a new format that has not been tried yet,” said Tackett. “This change is being made because of a scheduling conflict with the boys’ tournament. No such conflict exists with the girls’ event in Bowling Green. But after the 2013 tournament, we will review the situation as we do each year, and make any necessary future decisions.”

Former Clay County basketball coach Kevin Spurlock
Hazard Herald Kevin Spurlock named new basketball coach at Perry Central by Cris Ritchie, Editor
A familiar name to high school basketball fans in Perry County will take the reins of the Perry Central boys’ program as Kevin Spurlock accepted the head coach’s position this week. Spurlock will begin working at the school on September 4, and will make the move from Sheldon Clark High School in Martin County, where last season he coached the Cardinals to a 26-7 record and a district championship, eventually losing to an athletic East Ridge squad in the 15th Region finals. Spurlock, a Floyd County native, made a name for himself in coaching circles when he took over the Hazard Bulldogs’ program in 2002, going 19-10 in his first season. Three seasons later, he would coach the Bulldogs to a district championship and an appearance in the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena. He moved to the 13th Region in 2006, where he became head coach at the storied Clay County High School, and where he would win four straight district titles before moving on to Sheldon Clark in 2010. He captured two more district crowns for the Cardinals, but has yet to win another region title since 2006. Perry Central lost several players from last season’s team to graduation, including Jaysean Paige and Kyle Huff, but Spurlock will still inherit a talented squad with freshman Braxton Beverly in the backcourt and senior Dalton Cornett anchoring the team on the blocks. Spurlock is a Floyd County native and graduate of Allen Central High School, where he also coached baseball and football early in his career.

The Times-Tribune Tigers hand Corbin first loss of the season with 72-66 win By John Stepp
It was a tournament-like atmosphere in the Corbin High School gymnasium as the Redhounds took on the Clay County Tigers in a matchup between two of the top teams in the 13th Region. The Tigers prevailed in the slugfest, 72-66, improving their record to 3-0 on the season. All five Clay County starters were in double figures, with Tyler McDaniel leading all scorers with 19. Despite the scrappy performance, the Redhounds struggled to compete with Clay County on the offensive and defensive boards, as the Tigers scored on several offensive rebounds. The Redhounds return to action on Thursday when they host the Lynn Camp Wildcats. Clay County will host Louisville Holy Cross on Saturday. The Times-Tribune Whitley County ends Clay County’s 61-game region win streak By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
With the game tied at 55 apiece and only seven seconds remaining, Whitley County’s Maria Johnson rebounded a missed shot and quickly passed the ball to Brandi Smith, who had just enough separation from a Clay County defender to release and hit a three-pointer as time expired, giving the Lady Colonels a 58-55 win — Clay County’s first regional loss since dropping a 74-64 decision to South Laurel on March 9, 2008 in the 13th Region Tournament championship game. Whitley County coach Larry Anderson admitted Clay County’s win streak against 13th Region opponents never entered his mind coming into the game. Anderson said coming into the contest, his team needed to put pressure on Clay County’s guards and keep Cheyenne Madden and Morgan Chesnut from taking things over in the post. The plan worked, as Madden, who entered the game with a team-best 24-point scoring average was limited to only four points in the first half and 11 points for the game while Clay County turned the ball over 15 times in the loss. The game was close throughout with the Lady Tigers leading by as much as eight points (22-14) in the first half, while Whitley County opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to build a 48-40 edge. But that’s when things got interesting, as Clay County went on a 15-5 run and took a 55-53 lead with :50 remaining after a basket by Madden, but two made free throws by Smith combined with her last-second three-pointer turned out to be enough to give the Lady Colonels the win. Whitley County (58) — Powers 4, Smith 21, Craig 10, Johnson 11, Dingess 3, Jones 9 Clay County (55) — Cotton 9, Mathis 6, Chesnut 17, Madden 11, Robinson 10, Smith 2. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1951921589/Brandi-Smith-s-buzzer-beater-ends-Clay-County-s-61-game-region-win-streak

Tigers win over Boyle County
The Boyle County boys spent most of their game Tuesday night trying to catch Clay County, only to lose their lead in the fourth quarter and fall 58-51 at Manchester. Boyle (3-1) fell behind 13-0 and trailed 15-5 after one quarter but battled back to take a 40-38 lead with 6 minutes remaining. The Rebels led by five points near the midpoint of the fourth period, but Clay (5-0) turned the tables and took its own five-point lead with 46 seconds to go. The Tigers then sealed their win at the free-throw line, where they were 16 for 20. Brett Jones scored 21 points for Boyle, and Hagen Tyler added 13. Micah Miniard had eight rebounds for the Rebels. Tyler McDaniel led Clay with 22 points, and Marty Bowling had 10 rebounds to help the Tigers outrebound the Rebels 33-24. www.centralkynews.com/amnews/sports/amn-prep-basketball-boyle-boys-fall-at-clay-southwestern-drubs-danville-boys-20121212,0,6064093.story

The Times-Tribune Knox Central rallies to knock off Clay County at Home By Chris Parsons, Staff Writer
The Knox Central Panthers turned a seven-point halftime deficit into a six-point win Thursday as Matthew Barger scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Panthers to a 68-62 win over the visiting Tigers. In addition to his 22 points, Barger added seven assists and turned the ball just one time against a typically stingy Clay County defense. When all was said and done, the Panthers had outscored Clay County 24-13 in the final eight minutes to pull out the 68-32 win. The Panthers improved to 4-1 on the season, while Clay County falls to 5-1 after suffering their first loss of the season. Clay County (62) T. Smith 15, McDaniel 13, Reed 10, Bowling 8, Lyttle 6, B. The Times-Tribune Knox Central falls at home to Clay County By Chris Parsons, Staff Writer
Entering Thursday’s game against Knox Central, the Clay County Lady Tigers were coming off their first 13th Region loss since 2008 after dropping a 58-55 decision to Whitley County Monday night. After jumping out to a 19-11 lead at the end of the first half and extending the gap to 36-19 at halftime, there were no worries of a second loss as the Lady Tigers cruised to the 67-29 win. The Clay County three-point barrage came early and often as the Lady Tigers made good on six of them in the first half. For the game, freshmen Talaura Mathis and Ajaycia Cotton knocked down four three-pointers each to help pace Clay County. Cheyenne Madden led all scorers in the game, pouring in 17 points, one of which came in the second half. Cotton and Mathis added 14 and 12, respectively. After leading 36-19 at halftime, Clay County used a 31-10 second half effort to put things away for good, improving to 3-1 on the season. Knox Central falls to 3-2 on the season. The Lady Panthers were led by Jenna Mills with 10 points. Clay County (64) Madden 17, Cotton 14, Mathis 12, Robinson 12, Roberts 8, Chestnut 2, Woods 2. The Times-Tribune Third quarter woes lead to North Laurel’s 68-53 loss to Clay County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Brad Sizemore’s North Laurel Jaguars took Clay County’s best punch in the first half and answered with a made three-point basket by eighth grader Peyton Broughton to take a 34-31 lead at halftime. But it was the Tigers’ third quarter punch that delivered the game-changing blow. With Clay County (6-1 overall 1-0 vs. 49th District opponents) trailing 38-37 at the 5:34 mark of the third quarter, Tiger coach Bobby Marcum decided to go with a bit more defensive pressure and it worked. The Jaguars turned the ball over eight times as the Tigers closed the period with a 13-2 run and never looked back during their 68-53 win over North Laurel. The Jaguars (4-4), who are now 1-2 against 49th District opponents, were outscored 37-19 during the second half while turning the ball over nine times and connecting on only seven-of-23 shot attempts. It didn’t help much that both Marcus Carson and Austin Rush were both battling foul trouble throughout the game’s final 16 minutes. Sizemore’s squad got as close as 10 points (60-50) with 3:18 left in the game after a three-pointer by Broughton, but the Tigers wrapped up the win by answering with an 8-3 run as Tyler McDaniel scored seven points during the stretch. The sophomore guard led all scorers with 23 points while Marty Bowling followed with a 14-point effort. Broughton and Rush each scored 10 points for North Laurel. North Laurel (53) Carson 9, Henson 9, Broughton 10, Thompson 4, Rush 10, Jervis 9, Asher 2. Clay County (68) McDaniel 23, Reed 6, Rice 8, Lyttle 8, Bowling 14, T. Smith 4, B. Smith 2, Wolfe 3. sentinel-echo.com Madden, Clay too much for Lady Jags By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
It went about like you would expect when a Clay County team that has lost only once meets a North Laurel team that has won only once. The Lady Tigers opened a double-figure lead in the first quarter and turned on the cruise control for a 68-40 win. With point guard Kayla Bruner out for the season with a torn ACL, it has forced the Lady Jaguars to scramble the lineup. But now the Lady Jaguars have had 10 games to adjust and are looking at the same record they had through 10 games last season. Most of the damage was done inside by Cheyenne Madden with 21 points and Morgan Chestnut with 14. Madden would be playing for Mahan had she stayed at North Laurel after her sophomore year. Instead she is starring for the Lady Tigers and averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. Madden scored 10 in the first quarter for Clay County, showing a soft touch in the lane and power under the goal. sentinel-echo.com Clay’s 11-0 run lifts Tigers over North, 68-53 By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
You expect a tough game every time you travel to Clay County. Throw in that this was a rematch of the 13th Region finals and that district seeding was at stake. The Tigers 11-0 run in the third quarter was a key to the 68-53 win. The loss leaves the Jaguars 0-2 in the district and in jeopardy of a tough road game to open the 49th District Tournament. There is still a chance of a three-way tie if North Laurel wins its remaining games with Clay County and Jackson County. Clay County and Jackson County have not played each other. Last year North Laurel lost 88-52 at Clay County in the regular season and 47-40 in the district championship. But the game on Clay County’s mind was the 54-52 North Laurel win in the 13th Region championship that sent the Jaguars to their first Sweet 16. Recent history proves Tuesday’s game does not determine the season. The Jaguars will also get Jake Allen back in the lineup soon with doctors expected to release him to practice this week. The Independent Ashland stays unbeaten with win over Clay County by: Aaron Snyder
Ashland remained unbeaten as it outdueled Clay County, 71-67, during the opening round of the eighth annual Raceland Derby Classic on Thursday at Raceland-Worthington High School. Ashland (7-0) transformed a 33-32 halftime deficit into a 52-42 lead by the 1:22-mark of the third quarter. The Tomcats attack the basket more fluidly to create foul trouble for Clay County big man Marty Bowling, who averages a double-double. While Bowling still managed 17 points and 12 rebounds, he was limited to no field goals in the second half. Tyler McDaniel, the Tigers’ leading scorer, hit a hot streak in the third quarter to help tighten things up. He finished with 25 points. Clay County tied the Tomcats four times in the fourth quarter, but never seized the lead in the period. Clay County (67) Reed 14, Rice 3, McDaniel 25, T. Smith 2, B.
