Harlan Daily Enterprise Clay County falls to Harlan County in WYMT Classic JOHN MIDDLETON, Sports Editor
Harlan County won’t be playing in the championship of the WYMT Mountain Classic, but the Black Bears showed they are a clear favorite to capture the 13th Region title on Thursday. Harlan County never trailed on its way to a 58-47 victory over regional contender Clay County in the WYMT consolation bracket at Perry Central. Harlan County wasted little time erasing memories of Wednesday’s loss to Hazard, opening the contest on a 10-0 run to take control. After struggling to hang on to the ball Wednesday, Harlan County was much improved against the Tigers. The Bears didn’t have a turnover in the first quarter and finished with just nine in the contest. Harlan County (15-3) will face North Laurel in the fifth-place game of the WYMT Classic on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Jaguars defeated Betsy Layne on Thursday. Clay County (11-6) will travel to North Laurel on Jan. 18. Harlan County (58) – Tyler Brewer 10, Alex Sergent 12, Chad Massingill 2, Aaron Caldwell 17, Tyler Miller 7, James Bond 6, Zach Caldwell 4, Cody Bumgardner 0, Trey Sanders 0, Zack Wilson 0. Clay County (47) – Tydler McDaniel 13, Blake Smith 5, Jarrod Rice 0, Marty Bowling 5, Stephon Lyttle 17, Travis Smith 0, Wes Wolfe 7. Read more: harlandaily.com/bookmark/21375040

The Times-Tribune Fear 'Les' 13th Region Basketball Rankings
Boys Top Five
1. Harlan County Harlan County remains the most consistent team in the 13th Region and they have now separated themselves from the rest of the pack, but they still have to get over the postseason hump of being 0-4 all-time in the 13th Region Tournament. 2. Clay County The Tigers picked up a big 68-67 come from behind win at home over 49th District rival Jackson County. Clay County moved another step closer to capturing the 49th District’s top seed after Stephon Lyttle’s last-second shot secured the one-point win for the Tigers. 3. Jackson County Jackson County had rival Clay County down as many as 14 points before seeing the Tigers rally to pick up a slim one-point win. It looks more than likely Jackson County and North Laurel will meet up in an elimination game in the first round of the 49th District Tournament. 4. Corbin 5. Barbourville 6. Pineville 7. Knox Central 8. South Laurel 9. North Laurel 10. Bell County Girls Top Five
1. Harlan County This is the first time since the 2008 season boys and girls teams from the same school (South Laurel) were ranked No. 1 at the same time. That’s pretty impressive for the Bears and Lady Black Bears basketball teams. Harlan County finally got over the hump in the 13th Region by defeating Clay County for the first time in school history in overtime, 59-49.Just how impressive have the Lady Black Bears been? Well they haven’t lost to an instate team yet. 2. Whitley County The Lady Colonels fall from the top spot while posting a 3-4 record during their last seven games. Whitley County has played some top-notch competition during the stretch, but needs to be a bit more consistent. 3. Clay County The Lady Tigers suffered their second loss to a 13th Region opponent this season this past week against Harlan County. Just goes to show you how impressive their dominance had been before the season dating back to the 2005-06 campaign — they had only lost twice to regional opponents during that span. Clay County will be back in action Saturday on the road against 12th Region favorite Lincoln County before hitting the road again Monday against Corbin in a 13th Region matchup. 4. Bell County Bell County has responded well since losing to Harlan County a couple of weeks ago. The Lady Bobcats have put together a 6-2 record since the loss with setbacks coming against Rockcastle County and Woodford County. 5. Corbin 6. Lynn Camp 7. Barbourville 8. South Laurel 9. Pineville 10. Knox Central thetimestribune.com/sports/x503818410/Fear-Les-13th-Region-Basketball-Rankings

Harlan County 58, Clay County 47 — The WYMT Consolation matchup between both Harlan County and Clay County could be a preview of things to come in the 13th Region Tournament. Mike Jones’ squad jumped out on Clay County, 18-10, and led 30-20 at halftime before pulling away in the second half.

There’s a first time for everything. If you don’t believe it, ask the Corbin Lady Redhounds. The Times-Tribune13th Region NotebookBy Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The 13th Region is beginning to turn into one of the most unpredictable regions for both the boys and girls teams and after this past Friday’s results, you’ll see what I’m talking about. So here we go — on the girls’ side, Bell County upset Harlan County while South Laurel upset Whitley County and Harlan surprised Barbourville. On the boys side, Corbin fought back from 16 points to beat Knox Central on the road while Bell County shocked Harlan County while Pineville upset Jackson County while Whitley County surprised South Laurel.
The Corbin Lady Redhounds captured their first win in 19 tries against Clay County this past Monday thanks to a 16-point effort by Holli Disney and a last-second shot by Miranda Wilson. The one-point loss marked the third 13th Region loss for Clay County, who entered the season with only two losses to 13th Region teams dating back to the 2005-06 season.
Lynn Camp’s Matt Trosper turned in one of his best efforts during his varsity career by recording a triple-double against Oneida Baptist Saturday. Trosper scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and finished the game with 12 assists.
(Boys) Clay County 58, North Laurel 52 — The Tigers moved one step closer to grabbing the 49th District’s top seed by upending the defending 13th Region champion Jaguars, 58-52 loss. The six-point loss dropped North Laurel to under .500 (10-11) on the season.
(Girls) Corbin 57, Clay County 56 — Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons had never beaten 13th Region power Clay County, but the Lady Redhounds did just that Monday as Kayla Wilson’s basket with 1.8 seconds remaining turned out to be the game-winning shot. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1303525886/13th-Region-Notebook

sentinel-echo.com Jags cold early in 58-52 loss to Clay County By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
North Laurel missed its first seven shots and went almost six minutes before scoring its first points. It would give Clay County an 11-0 head start on the way to a 58-52 win. The Jaguars rallied to cut the lead to six points at halftime only to again come out cold. Clay County scored the first eight points of the second half. Clay County (11-6) now controls its own destiny for top seed in the 49th District Tournament. North Laurel (10-10) will need a win at Jackson County to secure second seed. The Times-Tribune Fear 'Les' 13th Region Boys Basketball Rankings
1. Harlan Co. (17-4 overall, 9-1 vs. 13th Region foes) What’s the scoop: Before I get to writing about Harlan County, I’m going to say this is the hardest time I’ve ever had doing the Fear ‘Les’ 13th Region Rankings. You can throw four or five teams in the mix and make a strong case why they should be No. 1, but with that said, I’m staying with the Black Bears once again. 2. Corbin (15-6, 9-3) 3. Clay County (14-6, 6-2) The Tigers seem to have righted the ship after dropping three straight games last week. Clay County is now winners of three straight with hopes of continuing its recent success. I’m starting to believe the way Tyler McDaniel and Marty Bowling play is the way Clay County goes. These two players are very important to the Tigers’ success. The Tigers host Perry Central and Pineville over the next five days. 4. Knox Central (12-8, 4-4) 5. Middlesboro (12-7, 7-4) 6. Jackson County (14-8, 7-2) 7. South Laurel (8-11, 5-4) 8. North Laurel (10-11, 4-7) 9. Barbourville (12-8, 7-4) 10. Herald-Leader High school notebook:Holmes hopes to be first team since Clay County to reach state tournament undefeated [/b] By Mike Fields
Can Holmes become the first boys' basketball team in 24 years to reach the Sweet Sixteen undefeated? Jason Booher's Bulldogs have a shot. They are 21-0 with seven regular-season games left. If they run the table, then make it unscathed through their district and region tournaments, they will be 33-0 and headed to Rupp Arena. The last team to accomplish that was Bobby Keith's Clay County Tigers in 1989. They were 33-0 and No. 1 in the state going into the Sweet Sixteen. (They lost to Marshall County in the first round.) In 1982, Allen Feldhaus Sr.'s Mason County Royals took a 30-0 record into the state tournament. (They lost to Virgie in the quarterfinals). Brewers was Kentucky's last unbeaten boys' basketball champion in 1948. * The scramble for supremacy in 14th Region boys' basketball is fascinating to watch. Perry County Central, Knott County Central, Hazard and Breathitt County have been considered the top four teams, but now along comes Cordia threatening to crash the party. A pair of talented Canadian transfers — Emmanuel Owootoah and Marlon King — have gotten an injunction that has gotten them on the court after they were ruled ineligible by the KHSAA. They combined for 30 points in a win over Letcher County Central on Tuesday. * Pairings for the boys' and girls' state basketball tournaments will be drawn by the KHSAA on Friday. The draw show will be televised by CWKYT-27.2 in Lexington at 1 p.m., and will also be available on www.khsaa.tv. The boys' Sweet Sixteen is March 6-10 in Rupp Arena. The girls' Sweet Sixteen is March 13-16 in Western Kentucky's Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. * North Laurel hosts the United States Energy Coal Basketball Classic on Saturday. The schedule is: North Laurel vs. Southwestern (girls), 2 p.m.; Johnson Central vs. Knox Central, 4; North Laurel vs. Whitley County, 6; Oak Hill Academy vs. Faith Baptist Christian (Ga.), 8. There was no change at the top of the most recent AP girls' and boys' basketball poll. Undefeated Marion County continues to dominate the girls' poll, firmly ensconced in the top-spot. With just one early-season loss to Bryan Station, Anderson County continues to chase the Lady Knights. After avenging that loss to the Defender with a convincing 65-45 victory on Jan. 22, the Lady Bearcats followed up with a 64-31 thumping of Collins. Madison Central also held steady at No. 5. The Lady Indians picked up a 61-43 win over Woodford County, followed by a 63-44 victory over Rockcastle County. Madison Central will face Clay County on Jan. 31. The Lady Tigers fell out of the top-10 despite picking up two more wins to improve to 19-4. Clay County knocked off Lexington Catholic 51-29 and also crushed Barbourville 73-39. GIRLS 1. You don’t hear a lot out of the Tiger camp, but they have put together an impressive four-game win streak, which includes big wins over North Laurel, Bell County and Pineville. Clay County has an important stretch of games remaining against some top-notch teams. The Times-Tribune Cards fall to Clay County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor

That was the case Tuesday, as Clay County managed to hold on and defeat South Laurel, 69-62. The Times-Tribune FEAR ‘LES’ 13th Region Boys Basketball Rankings
1. Harlan Co. (20-5 overall, 11-2 vs. 13th Region foes) 2. Corbin (19-6, 12-3) 3. Jackson County (17-8, 10-2) The Generals leapfrogged Clay County after playing one of their best games on Tuesday against North Laurel. This was the first time I got to see Jackson County play and boy, can they. This team is solid just as long as Steven Wagers doesn’t get into foul trouble. Jackson County will host Clay County Friday, Perry Central Saturday and Oneida Baptist Tuesday to finish out the regular season. Jackson County’s matchup against Clay County is huge. First off if the Generals win by more than two points, they will be the No. 1 seed, which means no elimination game against North Laurel. The two teams met on Jan. 4 with the Tigers coming from behind to pick up a 68-67 win. 4. Clay County (17-6, 9-2) It’s hard to drop a team a spot when they are winners of six straight games, but unfortunately for Clay County, I did. But honestly you could easily flip-flop both the Tigers and Jackson County at the three-four spots. Clay County picked up a big win on Tuesday against South Laurel while also beating Pineville, North Laurel and Bell County during the six-game win streak. The Tigers will host Breathitt County Saturday and Perry Central Wednesday. 5. Barbourville (15-10, 8-6) 6. North Laurel (13-12, 6-8) 7. South Laurel (10-13, 6-6) 8. Knox Central (13-11, 5-5) 9. Barbourville (10-12, 6-7) 10. Pineville (14-9, 10-7) thetimestribune.com/sports/x503845003/FEAR-LES-13th-Region-Boys-and-Girls-Basketball-Rankings

The Times-Tribune FEAR ‘LES’ 13th Region Girls Basketball Rankings
1. Clay County (20-5 overall, 7-3 vs. 13th Region foes) Welcome back to the top spot Lady Tigers. After sitting around and pondering about whether to keep Harlan County at the top spot or slide Clay County in, I decided to move the Lady Tigers back to No. 1. Why? Well, I just believe the Lady Tigers are playing better basketball right now — nothing more than that. The key to Clay County’s success has been the improved play of guards Ajaycia Cotton and TaLaura Mathis. Cotton connected on six-of-eight shot attempts and scored 14 points during the Lady Tigers’ 58-22 win over North Laurel Monday. Clay County will travel to play Jackson County Friday before traveling to play Elizabethtown Saturday. The Lady Tigers will host South Laurel Monday. 2. Harlan County (22-3, 12-1) 3. Corbin (19-7, 13-3) 4. Bell County (20-4, 12-2) 5. Whitley County (16-6, 9-2) 6. South Laurel (11-11, 8-7) 7. Barbourville (16-9, 10-7) 8. Lynn Camp (19-8, 12-7) 9. Harlan (12-13, 7-10) 10. sentinel-echo Hot-shooting Clay dismantles North, 58-22 By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
Statistics show Clay County leads the state in field goal shooting at 51.8 percent. North Laurel doesn’t have to see those numbers to be convinced. The Lady Tigers made 24-of-35 shots in rolling to a 58-22 win over the Lady Jaguars on Monday. Clay County did get inside and rarely missed once they did. Former Lady Jaguar Cheyenne Madden led the Lady Tigers with 15 points despite sitting the fourth quarter. Madden ranks third in the state in field goal shooting at 66 percent. The Lady Tigers are not just an inside team with Talura Mathis among the top 10 in the state in three-point shooting at 2.6 per game. Clay County made just three three-pointers on the night with little need to shoot further than point-blank range. CLAY COUNTY (58) — Roberts 2, Cotton 14, Mathis 7, Chestnut 11, Madden 15, Robinson 5, Woods 4. sentinel-echo Tigers pull away late from Cards, 69-62 By Denis House, Sports Editor
Beating Clay County at home is a daunting task for any team. Since the 2009-10 season, the Tigers are 37-7 at Bobby Keith Gymnasium, including 9-1 this season coming into Tuesday night’s match-up with South Laurel. Make that 10-1, but it didn’t come easy, as the Tigers pulled away late to take a 69-62 win. The recent Super Bowl had a 34 minute delay due to a power outage. This game had its own delay of almost the same amount of time, but it came before the tip-off, as Clay County celebrated its Senior Night, then its cheerleaders performed a routine. By the time this was all done, and the teams were given 20 minutes to warm-up, the game started well over a half hour from its previous scheduled start time of 7:30 p.m. Clay County placed four players in double figures, led by Stephon Lyttle’s 16. Tyler McDaniel added 12, and Jarrod Rice and Marty Bowling both had 10. Baxter led South with 14 and Jones had 12. They would be the only Cardinals to break double figures. This was the third straight game that Jones came off the bench to score in double figures. The Cards shot 35.2 percent from the field, making 18-of-51. They were also 15-of-22 from the free throw line for 68 percent. Clay hit 23-of-49 from the field for 46.9 percent and 21-of-27 from the charity stripe for 77.7 percent. SOUTH LAUREL (62) — Baxter 14, Slavey 8, Sanders 8, Jones 12, Schaser 2, Vandeventer 3, T. Grubb 6, Miller 4, Rader 5. CLAY COUNTY (69) — Rice 10, Reed 7, Bowling 10, Lyttle 16, Smith 9, Wolfe 5, McDaniel 12. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x964899140/Tigers-pull-away-late-from-Cards-69-62
