The Times-Tribune Fear 'Les' 13th Region Girls Basketball Rankings
1. Clay County (23-5 overall, 9-3 vs. 13th Region foes) The four-time defending 13th Region champions are where they usually are during the end of the regular season — sitting atop my 13th Region rankings. A lot of people are counting out Clay County because of its earlier losses to regional teams, but I say not so fast. The Lady Tigers are now winners of four straight after upending South Laurel at home a couple of days ago, 54-36. Clay County has put together an impressive 13-3 record since Christmas break. The Lady Tigers finish regular season play Friday on the road against Middlesboro before going against the winner of Red/Bird/Oneida Baptist Wednesday in semifinal action of the 49th District Tournament. 2. Corbin (21-8, 15-3) 3. Harlan County (22-5, 12-2) 4. Bell County (22-5, 13-3) 5. Whitley County (18-7, 11-2) 6. South Laurel (12-13, 9-8) 7. Barbourville (18-10, 12-8) 8. Lynn Camp (20-8, 13-7) 9. The Times-Tribune Fear 'Les' 13th Region Boys Basketball Rankings
1. Clay County (19-6 overall, 10-2 vs. 13th Region foes) We are down to the last Fear ‘Les’ 13th Region Rankings of the regular season and for the first time on the boys’ side, we’ve got a new No. 1 ranked team. Yep, Harlan County is no longer the region’s top-ranked squad and is replaced by the region’s hottest team — Clay County. Clay County’s two losses against 13th Region teams (against Harlan County and Knox Central) are the fewest in the region. Combine that with the Tigers’ current eight-game win streak and you see why I have them ranked No. 1. Clay County will travel to play Middlesboro Friday before going against the winner of Red Bird and Oneida Baptist Wednesday during semifinal action of the 49th District Tournament, which is held in Jackson County. 2. Corbin (21-6, 13-3) 3. Harlan County (20-7, 11-3) 4. Barbourville (16-10, 9-6) 5. Jackson County (18-10, 11-3) 6. Pineville (17-9, 13-7) 7. Knox Central (15-12, 7-6) 8. South Laurel (11-15, 7-6) 9. sentinel-echo.com 49th District could have many different endings Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
It’s like a movie where you can pick your own ending. I could write this column three times and make a case for Clay County, Jackson County, or North Laurel to win the boys’ 49th District Tournament. Clay County is 4-0 against the other two teams. That isn’t very convincing when you consider the wins over Jackson County were by a combined two points. You don’t think North Laurel can catch fire and win this tournament and more? The Tigers had two wins over North Laurel last season, including a 36-point rout in Manchester. But it was North Laurel that came out on top in the region. Although some teams are getting a measure of revenge for Clay County’s years of dominance, they have not been able to wrestle the 49th District title away. Clay County has won the 49th District nine straight years. The last time they lost in the district tournament was a 52-51 thriller to Rockcastle County in the 2003 finals. The Rockets are no longer in the 49th District. Since losing the title in 2003, the Tigers have a record of 54-3 against district opponents. Along with the previously mentioned loss to North Laurel, the Jaguars also picked up a 68-56 win over Clay County in the 2010 Cumberland Falls Invitational Tournament. The only other district loss in nine years was a 2004 loss at OBI. The Girls’ 49th District Tournament is being played in Jackson County, but the girls’ championship still goes through Clay County. The Lady Tigers haven’t lost a 49th District Tournament game since they fell in the championship game in 2005. That season they lost to Rockcastle County in the finals. The Lady Rockets are no longer in the 49th District. Since that loss, Clay County has won seven straight 49th District titles. They have won 35 straight 49th District games. There have been a few close calls. Clay County needed overtime to hold off North Laurel 50-49 in the 2010 49th District championship game. The last time one of the current 49th District teams beat Clay County was 2003 when both Jackson County and North Laurel knocked off the Lady Tigers in the regular season. Rachel Gaynor coached the Lady Jaguars to a 50-49 win. Nine days later Greg Parrett, now the Jackson County boys coach, led the Lady Generals to a 54-36 win. That was not your typical Clay County team with the Lady Tigers losing in the first round of the district tournament that year. This season has been much more typical Clay County. Two of the Lady Tigers five losses have been in overtime. The other three losses were by a combined eight points. Clay County has lost twice to 13th Region opponents. They fell by three points to a Whitley County team that has since lost four starters to injuries. They also lost at Corbin to a Lady Redhounds team that may be the hottest team in the region. Clay County is winning behind a strong and efficient inside attack of Cheyenne Madden and Morgan Chestnut. Madden averaged 17.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Her 67 percent field goal shooting ranks third in the state. Clay County as a team ranks No. 1 in field goal percentage. Chestnut is almost equally effective at 15.6 points and seven rebounds per game. Then you have to worry about Talaura Mathis on the outside, who ranks among the state leaders in three-pointers at 2.6 per game. The Lady Tigers are ranked No. 18 in the state with good reason. This tournament will not do anything to hurt that ranking. www.sentinel-echo.com/columns/x766088719/On-The-Rebound-Story-could-have-many-different-endings

Middlesboro Daily News Jackets fall to Clay County, 78-53 by Jay Compton, Sports Editor
A slow start spelled doom for the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets on Friday as Clay County jumped out to a 19-2 lead and went to a 78-53 win. The Tigers’ active 2-3 match-up zone and a 2-1-2 fullcourt press were also a big factor in Clay’s early surge. Middlesboro missed their first nine shots from the field and were forced into seven turnovers during the first quarter. Any hopes of a second half comeback were dashed by McDaniel, who hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter. Poindexter scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the third for Middlesboro, but the Tigers continued to pull away. It was 59-37 after three and Clay went on to win by 25. It was the 10th straight win for the Tigers as they close the regular season with a record of 21-6. Both teams will open district tournament play next week with Clay County playing the winner of Monday’s Oneida Baptist-Red Bird game on Wednesday in the 49th District semifinals at Jackson County. Middlesboro (14-12) will face Bell County on Tuesday in the first round of the 52nd District Tournament at Harlan. Middlesboro Daily News Madden’s 31 leads Clay over Lady Jackets by Jay Compton, Sports Editor
Clay County’s size advantage was just too much for the Lady Jackets to overcome on Friday. Senior forward Cheyenne Madden scored 31 points to lead the Lady Tigers to a 71-41 win. Madden took over the game in the second quarter and scored ten of Clay’s 12 points in the period. Middlesboro was held to just two baskets from Carissa Padgett and single free throws by Green and Spurlock and Clay County took a 36-18 lead into halftime. Both teams will open play in their district tournaments next week. Middlesboro (5-20) will take on Harlan County in the 52nd District semifinals on Wednesday at Harlan. Clay County (24-5) will play the winner of Monday’s Oneida Baptist-Red Bird game on Wednesday in the 49th District semifinals at Jackson County. 1. Clay County (25-5 overall, 11-3 vs. 13th Region foes) I said this last week and I’ll say it again — the four-time defending 13th Region champions are where they usually are during the end of the regular season — sitting atop my 13th Region rankings. A lot of people are counting out Clay County because of its earlier losses to regional teams, but I say not so fast. The Lady Tigers are now winners of six straight after upending Oneida Baptist during semifinal action of the 49th District Tournament Wednesday. Clay County has put together an impressive 15-3 record since Christmas break. The Lady Tigers are looking to capture their eighth straight 49th District title against North Laurel. Who is the last team to beat Clay County in the district tournament? Rockcastle County, back in 2005, who won 66-50. 2. Corbin (23-8, 17-3) 3. Harlan County (25-5, 15-2) 4. The Times-Tribune FEAR ‘LES’ 13th Region Boys Basketball Rankings
1. Clay County (22-6 overall, 12-2 vs. 13th Region foes) The Tigers hold on to the No. 1 spot for the second straight week and once again, have reached the finals of the 49th District Tournament after upending Red Bird Wednesday. Clay County might just be the most balanced team in the 13th Region. The Tigers have four players averaging in double figures in scoring — Tyler McDaniel (17.9), Marty Bowling (11.7), Stephon Lyttle (11.3) and Kody Reed (10.1). If coach Robert Marcum continues to get this type of play, Clay County will be tough to beat in the 13th Region Tournament. The Tigers are looking to run their win streak to a season-best 12 games against North Laurel in the finals of the 49th District Tournament. Clay County has already beaten the Jaguars twice this season. 2. Corbin (23-6, 15-3) 3. Harlan County (22-7, 13-3) 4. Barbourville (19-10, 12-6) 5. Knox Central (16-13, 8-7) 6. Jackson County (18-11, 11-4) A promising season came to an end when North Laurel upended the Generals during semifinal play of the 49th District Tournament. This year’s team was one of the best teams to come out of Jackson County in a long time. 10. The Times-Tribune North Laurel falls behind 20-0 before losing to Clay County, 59-32 By Chris Parsons
The North Laurel Lady Jaguars dug a hole too big to climb out of Thursday as they fell 59-32 to Clay County in the 49th District championship game. The Lady Jaguars (6-25) failed to score a point in the first quarter and trailed 30-8 at the end of the first half. North Laurel managed to mount some offense in the second half, but the Lady Tigers outscored them 18-11 in the period to extend the margin to 48-19 with one quarter to play in the game. The Lady Jaguars outscored Clay County 13-11 in the final eight minutes, but eventually fell 59-32 as the 49th District Runner Up. The Lady Jaguars have a few days to prepare for the 13th Region Tournament, which will get underway next Tuesday. Mahan said there’s plenty of work for his team to do between now and then. Ashley Wyatt led the Lady Jaguars with nine points in the loss, while Hannah Gray added seven. Clay County’s Morgan Chestnut led the Lady Tigers with 19, while Cheyenne Madden chipped in 14. North Laurel (32) — Wyatt 9, Chestnut 3, Gray 7, Smith 3, Lawson 3, Rains 2, Carpenter 3, Ellington 2. Clay County (59) — Robert 4, Cotton 8, Mathis 4, Chestnut 19, Madden 14, Robinson 7, Smith 2, Woods 1. thetimestribune.com/sports/x36427047/Clay-in-a-big-way

The Times-Tribune Tigers win 10th straight 49th district championship by beating North Laurel By Mitch Howard
Clay County made it 10 straight 49th District titles with a 64-58 win over North Laurel Friday. Clay County turned the ball over eight times on the night and just once in the fourth quarter. They also out rebounded North Laurel. But possibly the Tigers biggest strength was an active, aggressive zone that forced North Laurel to take 20 three-point shots. They made only four. The Jaguars were still able to get 15 points from Jake Allen, but it may have been his toughest 15 points this season. Clay County (64) — McDaniel 19, Reed 8, Rice 10, Lyttle 6, Bowling 15, Wolf 6. North Laurel (58) — Carson 18, Thompson 11, Henson 5, Allen 15, Rush 4, Jervis 5. thetimestribune.com/sports/x36429378/Clay-holds-on

Clay County High School Basketball
The Times-Tribune With so many upsets, who knows who will end up cutting down the nets? By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
If the 13th Region Tournament is anything like the way the regular season has been for 13th Region teams, who knows who will be cutting down the nets Saturday night at Harlan County High School. The 13th Region Tournament returns to a high school campus for the first time since the 2008-09 season, as host Harlan County (23-7) will enter the season as the favorite after capturing the 52nd District title with a convincing 83-57 win over Middlesboro last week. But to win the school’s first-ever 13th Region crown, the Black Bears must erase the memories of tournaments past. Harlan County has never won a game during its four appearances in the 13th Region Tournament and has been knocked off the past two seasons by Clay County. This time around, the Black Bears must find a way to get past 50th District runner-up South Laurel (13-16), who is the only team in the region tournament with a losing record. The Cardinals won’t be a pushover, though. South Laurel lost earlier in the season at home to the Black Bears, 44-32, but that was without the services of starting guard Blake Sanders, who was out with a hand injury. Sanders is back now along with teammate Zac Baxter, who is one of the top scorers in the region. There are other teams in the tournament that will challenge Harlan County for the regional crown. Red-hot 49th District champion Clay County (23-6) enters with an impressive 12-game win streak and could easily capture its first 13th Region championship since 2001, but first things first, the Tigers must get past first round foe Barbourville (19-11). Dinky Phipps’ squad has surprised many this season with some impressive wins, including a 56-53 road win over Harlan County on Feb. 3. Barbourville is led by Devon Mills, who is considered one of the region’s top players. Tony Pietrowski’s Corbin Redhounds (24-6) are another frontrunner for this year’s regional crown. Corbin enters the tournament with the best record while winning its last nine games and 14-of-its last 15 decisions. The Redhounds also own a road win over Harlan County this season and will play Middlesboro in today’s first round opener. The two teams have met once this season with Corbin coming away with an easy 68-51 win. The Yellow Jackets are powered by Donnie Foister and Austin Poindexter. When they are on, they are on and win they’re off, they’re off, according to coach Russ Thompson. The best first round game might just be the matchup between defending 13th Region champion North Laurel Jaguars and Knox Central. Both teams are capable of putting together a run to win the 13th Region Tournament. Brad Sizemore’s Jaguars (15-15) have struggled at times this season, but return most of the nucleus that surprised many last year when North Laurel won its first-ever regional crown. The Jaguars picked up a 63-47 win at home during their regular-season finale against the Panthers (17-13), but Knox Central is much-improved since the loss —actually, they're healthier. Brian Evans’ squad ran through the 51st District Tournament with ease, beating Pineville by 10 points on 62 percent shooting while upending Barbourville in the title game by 15 points on 54 percent shooting. thetimestribune.com/sports/x564662021/The-Unknown

Clay County High School Basketball
The Times-Tribune Four-time defending region champion Clay County is team to beat By John Henson
The 13th Region has produced its share of powerhouse girls basketball teams over the years that made deep runs at the state tournament. Rarely, though, has a field been stronger overall than the group that will gather this week at Harlan County High School. The 13th Region had seven teams post winning records during the regular season and all seven won at least 19 games. All seven also made it through district competition and will compete this week for the regional title. The toughness of the field will be on display in the opening game when the two top teams in the preseason square off as Clay County (26-5) takes on Whitley County (19-10). The Lady Tigers hadn’t lost to a 13th Region opponent over the past four years until falling to Whitley County, Harlan County and Corbin this year in close games. Clay still features the region's most potent post game, led by seniors Cheyenne Madden (18.0 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per game) and Morgan Chesnut (15.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and junior Sara Robinson (7.9), but the Lady Tigers had an adjustment period in the backcourt following the graduation of Alisha Mitchell and Sabrina Smith. Sophomore Ajaycia Cotton (6.3) took over at point guard and has progressed through the course of the year. Freshman wing Talaura Mathis (7.8) is one of the region's best shooters. Whitley was slowed by a devastating string of injuries and illnesses late in the season as senior point guard Bethany Powers (7.3) went out with a knee injury, junior wing Brandi Smith (19.3) suffered from mono and junior center Kandace Craig (7.2) missed several games with a hand injury. All three are back now, along with sixth man Hallie Jones (4.8), who was also out with a knee injury. Junior guard Maria Johnson (12.6) helped fill the void on offense when the Lady Colonels were short-handed as perhaps the region's top three-point shooter. Bell County (25-5) will be a favorite in the second game Wednesday against Lynn Camp (23-9). The Lady Cats knocked off Harlan County in a 52nd District championship showdown matching two of the region's top teams. A backcourt featuring all-stater Maci Morris (20.7), Jessica Sanders (11.4) and Morgan Garnett (9.8) is the Lady Cats' strength. Bell County's post tandem of Paige Robbins (6.1) and Kelli Smith (4.9) played well, especially on defense, in the district tournament. Lynn Camp is the Cinderella story in this year's tournament with a school-record 23 wins. The Lady Cats have been led by senior guard Kayla Smith and junior forward Heather Wilson. Harlan County (25-6) will face Barbourville (21-10) in the first round of the tournament for the second straight year. The Lady Tigers have never defeated Harlan County but enter this year's tournament as 51st District champs. They also set a school record for victories. The Erslan twins, Kara (18.0) and Kelsey (14.1), point guard K.K. Liford (3.8), Amber Mills (11.4) and Brianna Tate (7.4) lead an all-junior Barbourville starting lineup that has played together since middle school. Barbourville isn't loaded with size or depth but have become a contender by playing hard and making life difficult for opposing offenses. Corbin (24-8) will be a prohibitive favorite against North Laurel (6-25) in the last game of the first round, but you can be sure that Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons has reminded her team what happened to Whitley County in last year's first round when the Lady Colonels were the victims of one of the biggest upsets in tournament history. Corbin features a strong backcourt, led by the WIlson twins, MIranda (12.8) and Kayla (11.1), along with Brooklyn Ashurst (4.8). Junior forward Sarah Ashley (6.8) and senior center Holli Disney (5.5) round out the lineup. North Laurel has been led by senior forwards Kendall Ellington, Brooke Carpenter and Ashley Wyatt. thetimestribune.com/sports/x986694812/Road-goes-through-Clay

WYMT-TV article and video Tigers heading to state for the first time since 2001
When Robert Marcum and his #3 Clay County Tigers defeated Mike Jones and his #10 Harlan County Black Bears Saturday for a trip to Rupp Arena and the Sweet 16, the team donned a 13th region championship tee shirt which read "Back on Top". This is significant because this is the first time the Tigers have gone to state since the 2000-2001 season. Ironically enough, Mike Jones was the head coach of those Tigers. So betting back on top was extremely emotional. The Tigers head to state peeking at the right time. Since the WYMT Mountain Basketball Classic, they have won 15 straight games. Now the Tigers will meet up with another mountain team as they will take on #2 Knott Central in the first round of the tournament. And the way these Tigers are currently playing, they will be tough to stop in Lexington. Camron Justice
ukrecruiting.bloginky.comCamron Justice of Knott Central listed as a top prospect
Sophomore, Camron Justice made headlines back in December when he scored 62 points in a single game at the the Republic Bank Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic. The 6-foot-2 guard told the Herald-Leader earlier this year that he already has scholarship offers from Tennessee, UAB, Morehead State, and Western Kentucky. He’s also heard from Louisville, according to Scout.com, which considers him a three-star recruit. Like Bolden, his recruitment should continue to pick up over the next few months. WYMT-TV Report and Video Patriots feeling more prepared for game with Tigers at Rupp Arena
Knott Central was oh so close to advancing to last year's Sweet 16 semifinals, and with the core of that team making a return trip to Rupp Arena, this year's Patriots are a year older and more experienced. The Patriots were able to defend their 14th region crown by blowing past Perry Central 52-32 thanks in large part to a strong defensive effort. And if Knott is to advance past their first round opponent, Clay County, they will need a similar defensive performance. The Patriots will look to make it back to back trips to the Sweet 16 quarterfinals, and maybe more, when they tip-off with the Tigers Thursday night at 8:00pm at Rupp Arena. www.wkyt.com/wymt/sports/headlines/Patriots-feeling-more-prepared-for-return-trip-to-Rupp-195197931.html

Middlesboro Daily News Clay County falls to Knott Central, 68-54
Camron Justice had 29 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Knott County Central overcame a slow first quarter to beat Clay County 68-54 in a first-round game in the Kentucky boys’ Sweet 16 state basketball tournament Thursday. The Patriots (30-5) were sluggish out of the gate, and Clay County took advantage. The 13th Region champions made 7-of-15 from the field in the first quarter and led 17-9. But the shots stopped falling for the Tigers (26-7), who made one field goal in the second quarter. The Patriots took the lead for good less than four minutes in. Clay County finished 19-of-61 shooting from the field, making 4 of 24 in the second and third quarters while Knott County stretched its lead to 15 points. Justice made 11 of his 13 free throws in the fourth quarter. Knott County Central will play Ballard in the quarterfinal round Friday. Read more: middlesborodailynews.com/bookmark/21919372

courier-journal.com Boys' Sweet 16: Knott County Central defeats Clay County 68-54 [/b] Knott County Central followed its first-quarter struggles with some second-quarter thunder to surge past Clay County 68-54 in Thursday’s final first-round game of the KHSAA Boys’ Sweet 16 in Rupp Arena. Sophomore Camron Justice had 29 points to lead Knott County Central, which trailed 17-9 after the first period but used a 17-3 run in the second to take the lead for good in the matchup of Eastern Kentucky schools. The Patriots (30-5) will face Ballard, which defeated Johnson Central earlier in the evening, at 8 tonight in the quarterfinals. Justice, one of the state’s best sophomores, had only three points in the first quarter as Clay County (26-7) used a diamond-and-one defense intended to limit his production. He and the Patriots came alive in the second quarter to take a 31-23 halftime lead. Corey Short hit three of the team’s four 3-pointers during the quarter. Clay County coach Robert Marcum said that early foul trouble to big man Marty Bowling hurt the Tigers’ post defense and that his team began settling for long jump shots in the second quarter instead of attacking the rim. He said the Tigers seemed to get fatigued on defense as well. Justice’s 19 second-half points thwarted any comeback chances for the Tigers. He finished 13 of 15 from the foul line, including 12 of 13 after halftime. Clay County, a traditional powerhouse that was in its first Sweet 16 since 2001, had legendary retired coach Bobby Keith on the bench as an honorary assistant. Marcum, a former Tigers player, said Keith “is the guy who has kind of made Clay County basketball what it is today,” and he wanted him to have one of the best seats in the house.
