The Times-Tribune 13th Region Boys and Girls Tournaments will be held at The Arena in 2014 By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
After being played at Harlan County High School this past season, the 13th Region Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments are back at The Arena. Host Jackson County High School and Connie Hunt, general manager of The Arena, have agreed to bring both tournaments back to The Arena for the 2013-14 season. Both tournaments had been held at The Arena from 2010-2012 after a 13-4 vote from the 13th Region athletic directors before being moved to Harlan County High School this past year. Hunt said she was excited to have both tournaments back at The Arena. Hunt confirmed each school in the 13th Region will receive $1,500 apiece. She also confirmed student tickets will be $5. Jackson County High School Athletic Director Wes Bishop was pleased that his school and The Arena officials were able to work things out. Williamsburg High School will be next in line to host both tournaments in 2014-15 and principal Gary Peters confirmed his school will go the route of playing the tournaments at The Arena, too. thetimestribune.com/sports/x2015924305/It-s-Back

WYMT-TV Sweet Sixteen Boys and Girls Finals move to Sunday
It was a move born out of necessity, but it was such a success it will continue on. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Board of Control voting today to play the Boys and Girls Sweet 16 Semi-Finals on Saturday and move the Championship Games to Sunday. This happened for the first time in tournament history this year because of a scheduling issue with UK and national television. Many worried that a Sunday final would hurt attendance, but fans turned out in record numbers. In March, the tournament began as normal with four games each on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Then on Saturday, UK closed out the regular season with a noon home game against Florida. That night, in the Sweet Sixteen Semi-Finals, a crowd of 20,172 turned out to see Madison Central-Hopkinsville and Ballard-Montgomery County. But Sunday was the real question mark and that afternoon, the first ever Sunday final brought 17,351 fans back to Rupp Arena to see Madison Central's comeback win against Ballard. It was the largest championship-game crowd since 2009. This new format will also be in place for the Houchens Industries Girls Sweet Sixteen for the first time beginning in 2014. www.wkyt.com/wymt/sports/headlines/Sweet-Sixteen-Finals-move-to-Sunday-203064551.html

sentinel-echo.com Jake Allen reportedly enrolls at Clay County By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
North Laurel coach Brad Sizemore knew he would have to replace three key players next season, now he has a fourth. Center Jake Allen has reportedly enrolled at Clay County High School. Allen averaged 14.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Last season he broke a finger during a preseason scrimmage and got a late start on the court. He averaged 11.9 points per game and 8.4 rebounds. Officials at North Laurel did not want to comment stating that was their policy on student matters. Officials at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association referred questions to the KHSAA handbook. KHSAA Bylaw 6 states that a student transferring from one member school to another is subject to a one-year period of ineligibility. This period of ineligibility may be waived if there is a bona fide change of residence. KHSAA Assistant Commissioner Darren Bilberry did not address questions about Allen specifically, but did give a time line on transfer requests in general. Clay County will have to replace seven seniors from last year’s 13th Region championship team. Those players include front court starters Marty Bowling, Stephon Lyttle, and Kody Reed. All three averaged in double figures with Bowling pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds per game. The Tigers will be building around junior guard Tyler McDaniel, who averaged 18.5 points per game. Clay County finished 26-7 last season and defeated North Laurel three times, including a 64-58 win in the 49th District title game. The 6-foot-8 Allen helped lead the Jaguars to their first 13th Region title as a sophomore. Louisville Courier Journal sportswriter Jody Demling ranked Allen as the 25th best player in the class of 2014 last year. North Laurel finished the season 16-16, a year after playing in its first Sweet Sixteen. They will lose point guard Marcus Carson, who will be playing baseball at the University of Kentucky, and forward Austin Rush, who signed with Transylvania. Also graduating is guard Kendrick Henson a part-time starter. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x508500553/Allen-transfer-leaves-another-hole-for-Jaguars

The Perry Central boys' basketball program will soon face their second coaching change in the past year. Harlan Daily Enterprise Several new faces atop preseason rankings John Middleton, Sports Editor
With several of last year's regional contenders hit hard by graduation, there will be several new teams atop the 13th Region rankings heading into next season. Defending champion Clay County will remain atop my rankings, despite graduating four starters. The Tigers return 13th Region Tournament Most Valuable Player Tyler McDaniel at point guard and will receive a boost from the incoming transfer of former North Laurel standout forward Jake Allen. Along with sophomores Wes Wolfe and Blake Smith, that should be enough to keep Clay County as the favorite heading into next season. Knox Central has arguably the most talent in the region. The Panthers return a stellar backcourt trio of Matthew Barger, Jeffrey Adams and Dustin Hensley. They also get back sophomore big man Chad Marsee. However, this team has struggled in the postseason, so I gave the edge to Clay County's experience. Bell County should rejoin the region's elite next season after rebuilding for the last few years. The Bobcats return the bulk of their lineup, led by seniors Tyler Potter and Jake Patterson. With standout guard Jordan Fox back Jackson County quickly established itself as one of the better teams in the region last season. The now senior point guard will look to lead the Generals to their most successful season in recent memory next year. No one in the region lost more than Harlan County last season. However, even with the graduation of four starters, the Bears should remain a contender next year. Juniors Zach Caldwell, Fred Massey and Tyler Miller will give Harlan County one of the area's top frontcourts to build around. Cody Bumgardner will lead the backcourt, while sophomores Trey Sanders and Zach Wilson and freshmen Treyce Spurlock and Cameron Carmical will all see playing time. South Laurel, Corbin, North Laurel, Middlesboro and Barbourville fill out the rest of the top 10. Each of those teams return enough to upset anyone in the top five, but it remains to be seen if they will be consistent enough to make a deep run in the regional tournament. The Harlan Green Dragons join a group of Williamsburg, Pineville, Whitley County and Lynn Camp that are just outside of the top 10. The Green Dragons will again feature one of the region's youngest lineups next season. The backcourt will be led by sophomores Caleb Hogue and Drew Parks and freshman Noah Busroe, while Aaron Simpson and Leighton Piper return inside. www.harlandaily.com/archives

Maci Morris and her Bell County teammates will be at Clay County Thursday January 30.
middlesborodailynews.com Bell County star Maci Morris commits to UK By: Ben Roberts, Lexington Herald-Leader
When Matthew Mitchell hits the recruiting trail, very rarely is there a failure to communicate. The Kentucky women’s basketball coach walked into the home of Bell County star Maci Morris on Wednesday night for his first in-home visit. He walked out with a commitment from one of the best guards in the Class of 2015. Mitchell’s down-home approach resonated with the Morris family, who had already hosted four or five other college coaches since the September recruiting period began. Lewis Morris mentioned Louisville, Marquette and Dayton as some of the schools that were recruiting his daughter the hardest. She also had interest from several high-profile West Coast programs, but never got a chance to visit any of them. Morris — a 6-foot prospect — has visited UK several times, and her father said Mitchell has been involved in her recruitment for two years. The UK coach was at all of Morris’ AAU games with the Kentucky Premier squad over the summer, according to Lewis Morris. Premier is the same program that produced current UK freshmen Makayla Epps and Kyvin Goodin-Rogers. Morris has been a starter at Bell County since the eighth grade and played on the varsity even before that. Last season, she averaged 21 points and 8.5 rebounds as a sophomore, leading Bell County to the 13th Region title game, where she had 27 points and 13 rebounds in a 63-60 loss to Corbin. She was voted by coaches to the Herald-Leader’s All-State second team. Bret McCormick of the All-Star Girls Report ranks Morris as the No. 43 overall prospect in the Class of 2015, but added that she has top-25 potential. Mitchell plans to play Morris at the wing position when she gets to Kentucky in two years. The UK coach won’t be allowed to talk publicly about his newest commitment until she signs next year, but Morris’ father — who is the head coach of the Bell County boys’ team and a former all-state player himself — said Mitchell likes Maci’s versatility. Morris is UK’s first commitment from the Class of 2015. The Cats have one commitment for next year’s class — three-star forward Jaycee Coe of Tennessee. Morris was in Rupp Arena for Big Blue Madness last year, and she told Mitchell that she would be back for next month’s season-opening festivities. The UK women’s coach has become one of the main attractions at Madness in recent years, showing off his dance moves in tributes to pop music legends. www.middlesborodailynews.com/news/sports/2524084

Maci Morris and her Bell County teammates will be at Clay County Thursday January 30.
Herald-Leader Maci Morris's dad was baseball and basketball star at Cumberland High School By Mike Fields, Staff writer
Bell County basketball standout Maci Morris, who committed to UK last week, comes by her talent naturally. Lewis Morris, her dad, was a baseball and basketball star at Cumberland High School, and was Associated Press high school male athlete of the year in 1985. He averaged 24 points and 11.5 rebounds his senior year in hoops, and he had a 31-3 career pitching record in baseball. He had an offer to play baseball at UK, but signed to play basketball at East Tennessee State. He later transferred to Cumberland College. Patti (Myers) Morris, Maci's mother, was a 1,000-point scorer at Harlan and helped the Green Dragons to the 1987 Sweet Sixteen. She played college hoops at Transylvania. Morris said when he was in grade school, his hero was Kyle Macy, who helped UK win the 1978 NCAA title. So is Morris' daughter Maci named after Kyle Macy? "That's the way I looked at it," Morris said. "I don't know if her mom would say that or not. But her mom told her Maci ought to wear No. 4 at UK, like Kyle Macy did." www.kentucky.com/2013/09/26/2845359/franklin-county-football-still.html

thetimestribune.com Clay County 79, South Laurel 57
It was all about the Clay County Tigers in the second game of the Red River Shootout as the host team walked away with an easy win over the visiting South Laurel Cardinals 79-57. It was an unusual game for the Cardinals who were without their head coach Jeff Davis and star player Zac Baxter. The team has been without Baxter for two games, but lost Davis right before the tip, as the coach had to be taken to the hospital after feeling light headed. Reports after the game said Davis was doing well and alert. Assistant Coach Dennis Hammons stepped in for Davis and has his team playing well in the first half. Despite being seemingly outmanned, the Cardinals were able to keep the game close with superb three-point shooting. Senior Tyler Grubb knocked down two three-pointers in the first quarter and Brennan Miller hit another to keep the Clay County lead close, with the Tigers holding a 15-13 advantage heading into the second quarter. South Laurel was able to tie the game at 18-18 midway through the second quarter on a three-point shot from freshman Jared Grubb, but that would be the last time the Cardinals would be in the game as the Tigers slowly began to take over. 1. Clay Co. (3-0 overall, 3-0 vs. 13th Region foes)
The Tigers are off to a red-hot start with three straight wins, while averaging 76 points per game. Robert Marcum's squad fought off a spirited Corbin team at home Monday to stay undefeated. Senior Jake Allen has had an immediate impact for the Tigers. Through three games Allen has averaged 10 points and eight rebounds and is shooting 76 percent from the free throw line.

Times-Tribune 13th Region Notebook By Les Dixon
We're two weeks into the high school basketball season, and this is what we know in the 13th Region — on the boys' side, Robert Marcum's Clay County Tigers are showing why many picked them to repeat as region champions. Clay County has taken on all comers, and the Tigers have shown they can take a punch. Powered by the play of Chip McDaniel, Trey Farmer, Wes Wolfe and Jake Allen, Clay County has beaten the likes of South Laurel, Corbin and North Laurel. The Tigers knocked off the Cardinals at home, 79-57, after using a strong second-half effort by Farmer, who can shoot just like his dad, former Clay County star Richie Farmer. Marcum's squad was challenged early and often against Corbin, actually trailing throughout the contest before pulling off a 69-62 win at home. The Tigers hit the road on Friday and faced off against rival North Laurel and actually trailed by as many as six points before pulling away and winning, 79-65. Clay County responded with a 79-57 win over Marion County on Saturday in the Bobby Keith Classic to improve to 5-0 on the young season. Tuesday, December 17 Harlan County at Clay County Two 5-0 teams will meet in Manchester. Remember these teams played each other in the 13th Region finals last season. Clay County Tiger Basketball
The Times Tribune 13th Region Prep Hoops Power Poll
Boys
1. Clay Co. (6-0 overall, 5-0 vs. 13th Region foes)
The Tigers are still unbeaten overall and have won five straight over 13th region foes. How good have they been? Their wins over regional opponents have been by an average of 15.8 points per game. There really have been no surprises so far this season for Clay County. They were expected to dominate the 13th Region coming into the season and they have done just that so far.
Clay County will get its fill of holiday action as the Tigers travel to Leslie County for the Citizens Bank Shootout and then to Dayton Beach, Fla. for the Sunshine Classic.
2. Corbin (4-2, 2-1) 3. Harlan County (5-1, 2-1) 4. Knox Central (2-3, 0-0) 5. Jackson County (3-3, 2-1) 6. North Laurel (4-3, 1-2) 7. Bell County (6-2, 5-2) 8. Williamsburg (2-3, 1-1) 9. South Laurel (2-3, 1-2) 10. Whitley County (3-2, 2-1) Girls

The Lady Tigers continue to be inconsistent. James Burchell's squad hasn't been able to put together consecutive wins so far this season.

Times Tribune Don't count out James Burchell's Clay County Lady Tigers By Les Dixon
It hasn't been the best of seasons for James Burchell's Clay County Lady Tigers, but they seem to be peaking at just the right time. After getting off to a 4-6, the Lady Tigers captured consecutive wins for the first time this season, including a 79-78 thriller against defending 13th Region champion Corbin, as guard Ajaycia Cotton hit a last-second shot to give her team the win. Clay County is young, but improving and is definitely not a team you want to play once post-season play begins. Keep an eye out on this team. www.thetimestribune.com/sports/x1186924799/Ready-for-A-Battle

Times Tribune Robert Marcum's Clay County Tigers Showing they are the region's best By Les Dixon
Despite coming up short on the road during Friday's loss to defending 12th Region champion Wayne County, Robert Marcum's Clay County Tigers have shown they are the team to beat in the 13th Region. The Tigers led throughout the game against the Cardinals before seeing Wayne County wrap-up the win at the charity stripe. Clay County is currently 10-3 on the season, and is the only team that is unbeaten against 13th Region competition at 5-0. Quietly becoming a team to keep an eye on is David Parks' Harlan Green Dragons haven't played the toughest schedule in the 13th Region, but they are now 9-2 on the season while riding an impressive seven-game win streak in the process. This is definitely a team to keep an eye on. Harlan's lone losses have came against Bell County - a 40-39 defeat on Dec. 10, and a 59-52 setback on Dec. 14. Everyone is talking about Jackson County, Williamsburg and Barbourville being the favorites coming into next week's 13th Region All 'A' Classic Tournament, but don't count at Harlan either. One team that is really struggling is Harlan County. After starting the season 5-0, the Black Bears are 1-9 during their last 10 games, including riding a current seven-game losing skid. www.thetimestribune.com/sports/x1186924799/Ready-for-A-Battle
