Clay Unemployment rate at 12.8 percent
Unemployment rates fell in 113 Kentucky counties between October 2009 and October 2010, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate — 16.8 percent. It was followed by Jackson County, 14.9 percent; Menifee County, 13.9 percent; McCreary County, 13.4 percent; Powell County, 12.9 percent; Clay and Grayson counties, 12.8 percent each; Wayne County, 12.5 percent; Wolfe County, 12.4 percent; and Leslie County, 12.2 percent. migration.kentucky.gov/newsroom/educationcabinet/Octco2010rates.htm

Two Hurt In Clay County Accident
Updated: Dec 2, 2010 7:58 AM Kentucky State Police blame slick roads for a Clay County accident that sent two people to the hospital Wednesday night. Police say Justin Blevins, 24, was driving a Chevy Trailblazer along U.S.-421 about 15 miles south of Manchester when he lost control and collided with a van. Blevins and Larry Henson, a passenger in the van, were both flown to UK Hospital. No word on their conditions. t.co/PhoDTGW

A former eastern Kentucky election commissioner convicted in a vote-buying case has had part of his conviction dismissed. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that U.S. District Judge Danny C. Clay County 11th poorest in US
Nearly one in six people living in rural America fell below the poverty line in 2009, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. And poverty rates in rural counties continue to be higher than in rural and urban communities. In 2009, the poverty rate in rural America was 17.26%, according to the Yonder’s analysis of Census Bureau data. The rate in exurban counties was 13.3%; and in urban counties, the rate was 13.9%. The national poverty rate in 2009 was 14.4%. Clay County came in at 11th at 43.3%

"World's Greatest Dad" arrested for making meth in house with two year old child
WYMT-TV Report Police find an active meth lab while checking on a two year old child in Laurel County. 34-year-old Aundrea Lay and 42-year-old Terry Cornett were arrested for manufacturing meth and endangering the welfare of a minor. In his mug shot, Cornett is seen wearing a t-shirt that says "World's Greatest Dad." The two year old was taken into protective custody and was released to a case worker. Williams and Farmer make several stops in the region WYMT-TV Report
They hope to be the next governor and lieutenant governor. Kentucky Senator David Williams and Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer made several stops in the region. Handshakes were the theme. Williams and Farmer are taking the big race one step at a time. "Before we worry about November, we have to win the primary," said Williams. The pair made several stops in Laurel and Knox County. Farmer, a Clay County native says its good to be home. "I'm first a country boy...an eastern Kentucky boy at heart. Clay County Deputy Jailer Facing Charges WYMT-TV Report
Deputy Jailer William Sizemore was taken into custody on January 15th for something he allegedly did five days earlier. "There was a warrant obtained for the Deputy Jailer here in Clay County for harassing communications and assault 4th," said Sheriff Kevin Johnson. Sizemore allegedly assaulted his girlfriends 17-year-old daughter. Dean's and President's lists are announced by University of the Cumberlands
WILLIAMSBURG, KY (02/07/2011) University of the Cumberlands' Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs has announced the President's List for the fall semester of the 2010-11 academic year. Jenna Wilson from Manchester has been named to the Dean's List in recognition of academic excellence. Wilson, a senior, is pursuing a major in music education. Full-time students who have obtained a cumulative scholastic standing of 3.5 and have no grade of "I" are eligible for the Dean's List. To be eligible for the President's List, a full-time student must have obtained a scholastic standing of 4.0 and have no grade of "I." Located in Williamsburg, University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study, nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master's degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.

Clay County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a tip Sunday night of some suspicious activity at a home in the Burning Springs community of Clay County. One-time judge in Clay County to be sentenced in vote fraud case
FRANKFORT, Ky. — A former eastern Kentucky judge and seven others are set to be sentenced on convictions that they schemed to buy votes for several local offices in three elections. U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves is scheduled to hand down a sentence for R. Cletus Maricle, a one-time judge in Clay County on Thursday in federal court in Frankfort. FRANKFORT — Two of eight Clay County residents convicted last year in a vote-buying conspiracy were sentenced Tuesday for their roles in a wide-ranging conspiracy to buy votes. U.S. District Judge Danny C. Reeves sentenced William E. Stivers to 292 months — more than 24 years — in prison. Charles Wayne Jones, 71, was sentenced hours later to 20 years in prison. Stivers, 58, was the first of eight Clay County residents to be sentenced for taking part in a vote-buying conspiracy that Reeves said damaged a lot of people in Clay County. MANCHESTER — Clayton Jackson and Chris Sturgill were friends from childhood, Sturgill's mother said outside the courtroom during Jackson's murder trial Thursday. Through tears, Linda Roark said she didn't know why Jackson might have killed her son, his wife and their three children in February 2004. Jackson was charged in 2007, and the trial was moved to Clay County after an unsuccessful attempt to seat a jury in Leslie County. A jury was seated and opening statements were made Thursday. Clay County residents arrested in Laurel County robbery Laurel County Sheriff Press Release
According to Sheriff John Root, Laurel Sheriff's Department received an emergency call that there had been an armed robbery at H and S Store on Ky 80, on 1/31/2011 at approx. 2:35 P.M. approx. 8 miles east of London. Apparently, a man armed with a pistol entered the store and robbed the store clerk of an undisclosed amount of money an...d fled the scene on foot. Witnesses followed and saw the suspect jump into a small blue car which was parked near the store and the vehicle headed east on Ky 80. The only description of the suspect was a white male with a blue hoody on and a sheet wrapped around his head and face. The driver of the car is described as a white female with blond hair. According to Sheriff John Root, On Wednesday, 3-23-2011 at approx. 5:00 P.M. , information was developed through a joint investigation between Clay County Sheriff Kevin Johnson, Manchester Police Department , Ky State Police, and the Laurel County Sheriff’s Dept. leading investigators to question a female suspect being held in the Clay county jail (on unrelated charges). She is a suspect in the armed robbery of H and S Store, 8 miles east of London on Ky 80 on January 31st, 2011. The suspect vehicle, a small car, fled the scene of the robbery headed toward Clay County on Ky 80. The female suspect is identified as Tasha Nicole Treadway age 24, of Manchester. A male suspected in the robbery is identified as Robert Travis Napier age 34 also currently of Manchester who is in the Laurel County Jail on unrelated charges. The two suspects are also being questioned regarding other area robberies, and crimes. Investigating for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department is Detective Charlie Loomis and Detective Tommy Johnston. Chief Deputy Eddy Sizemore Assisted. Police tell us the man who claimed he was robbed at gun point outside of the Burger King in Manchester was actually lying. Officials say Adam Wagers claimed he got attacked again Thursday morning. Wagers is being held in the Clay County Detention Center. He is charged with two counts of falsely reporting an incident. MANCHESTER — Prosecutors showed a jury on Friday two bows, and an arrow they say Clayton Jackson used to kill Chris Sturgill in 2004. Jackson, 30, could face the death penalty if convicted in the deaths of Sturgill, his wife, Amanda, and their three young sons and burning their home in the Leslie County community of Roark on Feb. 6, 2004. Jackson was charged after pleading guilty and serving time in federal prison for an illegal shotgun found in his home during the search. On Monday, the jury will rehear tapes of detectives' interviews with Jackson, which were difficult to understand in court on Thursday. They will use earphones to enhance the sound. WYMT-TV News Report Alleged serial robber has been arrested
Police make a big break in a string of robberies that crosses the Clay, Leslie, and Laurel County lines. Authorities say they have the serial robber behind bars. Police have now arrested Robert Travis Napier, the man they say is in the video and allegedly responsible for the robbery. Murder Trial Continues in Clay Circuit Court WYMT-TV Report
The murder trial of Clayton Jackson began day three with several hours of almost total silence. That's because a device was brought in to clear up a taped interrogation of Jackson by police that was recorded just hours after Chris Sturgill, his wife Amanda, and their three sons were murdered. Only those with headphones could listen in on what the prosecution and defense call valuable information.
