Carl Edward ElliottIllinois memorial service for retired Kentucky State Police trooperCarl ElliottCarl Edward Elliott, husband of Janice Lewis Elliott, went home to be with the Lord on May 21 at Manchester Memorial Hospital after a short illness with cancer. He was born in Cairo, Ill. He was 64 years old. He grew up on a farm in Grand Chain, Ill. His parents are Carl and Louise Wiesenborn Elliott, Grand Chain, Ill. He has one sister Sharon Mumford (husband Bob), Metropolis, Ill. He was preceded in death by a sister Dianne Wittenborn. He is also survived by three children: Regina Goines (husband Randy), Karnak, Ill., Richard Elliott, Anna, Ill., and Julie May (husband Larry), Corbin, Ky. There are five grandchildren. He graduated from Grand Chain High School and attended the Kentucky State Police Academy, graduating in February 1972. He was assigned to the London State Police post and spent the majority of his career in Clay County as a trooper and detective. He was highly dedicated to his career in law enforcement and was recognized on many occasions for his outstanding service to the citizens of the county. He retired from the state police in August 1990. He continued to work in law enforcement for Akal Security, as a court security officer at the federal courthouse in London, until he had to leave work for medical reasons. He had to fully retire in May 2006. He was a member of the Island Creek Baptist Church and the McKee Masonic Lodge. He loved God, his church and his family, and had many wonderful memories with his family. In addition to his great love for law enforcement, he thoroughly enjoyed farming, gardening, sports and traveling. Funeral services were conducted at Island Creek Baptist Church May 24, 2007, with Rev. Wendell Carmack, Chaplain James Hodge and Rev. Tammy Horn officiating. Burial was at Manchester Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were handled by Britton Funeral Home. A memorial service was held June 3 at Ohio Chapel Church, Grand Chain, Ill. OBI Trustee William Clark Bailey Jr. dies at 79HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORTMr. Bailey William Clark Bailey Jr., a well-known Harlan resident, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Wednesday at Harlan Nursing Home. He was 79. Mr. Bailey spent much of his working life as a trust officer at the Bank of Harlan. He left the bank after about 25 years and became general manager of Asher Mining in Bell County. He retired several years ago. He was a member of the Harlan High School 1944 state championship boys' basketball team, a Korean War Navy veteran and a graduate of Georgetown College. Over the years, he had been a trustee of Georgetown College and Oneida Baptist Institute. A member of Harlan Baptist Church, he had been a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and boys' Sunday school teacher at the church. Survivors include his wife, Betty Cornett Bailey; a son, Dr. Clark Bailey of Versailles; a daughter, Barbara Bailey Cowden of Lexington, an on-air personality with WKYT-TV in Lexington; and six grandchildren. Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Harlan Baptist Church. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorial gifts are suggested to the Harlan Baptist Church Elevator Fund.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis Blair and wife, Sharon, Holmes Mill; Gerald Blair and wife, Robin, Cawood; two daughters-in-law, Wanda Blair of Holmes Mill; Barbara Blair of Indiana; and a sister, Myrtle Smith of Keokee. Also surviving are ten grandchildren: Mike Blair, Glenda Lawson, Kenneth Blair, David Blair, Melissa Smith, Kim Burkhart, Chris Stewart, Jamie Blair, Randy Blair and Janeane Blair; twenty-five great-grandchildren; fifteen great-great-grandchildren; her Hospice nurses including Renee' Sullivan, Lauren Webb and Flora Soloe; and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Cloverfork Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Blair and the Rev. Lloyd Ray Burkhart officiating. Burial followed in the Evarts Memorial Gardens. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Hopkins was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, John H. Hopkins; a son, John Mark Hopkins; her parents: George and Bessie Jane Miller Burchett; and a brother, Edison M. Burchett. Survivors include two sons: Paris Hopkins and wife, Donna, of Frankfort; Douglas Hopkins and wife, Nancy, of Manchester; one daughter, Pat Howard and husband, Bruce, of Baxter; and their brother, John Payne and wife, Betty, of Olive Branch, MS; also surviving are six grandchildren: Stacy, Travis and Bret Hopkins, of Frankfort; Dr. Daniel Hopkins, of Tampa, Fla.; Sarah Hopkins, of Lexington; and Adam Howard, of Baxter; one sister, Dolly Pillion, of Mt. Vernon. Mrs. Hopkins taught several years in the Harlan County Schools. In addition, she was an award winning quilter and exhibited her many quilts at local and regional show's as well as the Kentucky State Fair. Throughout her life, Mrs. Hopkins was an active participant in numerous community activities and organizations. She was a long time member of the Wallins Church of God. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Mount Pleasant Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Howard Family Cemetery of Laymon. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Appalachian Regional Missions, P.O. The son of the late Ramsey and Minnie Cornett Bruner, he was born May 22, 1924 in Clay County, Ky. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was retired from the Fisher Division of General Motors. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth Gill Bruner, his brother Leander Bruner, his sisters Marie Ray, Pauline Cornett and Carrie Fisher, and his granddaughter Treasa Bruner. He is survived by his children Brandy Brenda Cramer Farmer, Rick Bruner and Michael Bruner, of Tennessee, Larry Bruner, of North Carolina, and Carolyn Greer and husband Jerry, of East Bernstadt; his brothers A.T. Bruner and Mander Bruner, of London; his sisters Stella Meeks, of Ohio, and Opal Nicholson, of London; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
