Rodney Chrisman, middle, presents a $500 check to Horse Creek Volunteer Fire Department board Chairman Ricky Harris, left, and Fire Chief Bill Goins.Jackson Energy’s Operation Round-Up program recently donated $2,500 to area organizations. Operation Round-Up is funded by voluntary contributions from Jackson Energy members who round their electric bills to an even dollar amount every month. The spare change, which averages around 50¢ a month, is placed into a trust fund and nonprofit groups and agencies apply for grants. A voluntary board of Jackson Energy members reviews the grant applications and funds projects throughout the cooperative’s service area. Since it started in 2003, Operation Round-Up has awarded almost $50,000 in grants. For more information, call (800) 262-7480.

The Department supports Kentucky’s youth in many ways. The KDA’s Division of Agriculture Education, Farm Safety and Farmland Preservation has two popular programs that travel to schools around the state and touch the lives of thousands of Kentucky children throughout the school year. The KDA launched a second Mobile Science Activity Center in 2006 in response to increasing demand from Kentucky schools for visits by the traveling interactive education experience. Each 42-foot trailer contains 10 group work stations, allowing students to conduct hands-on investigations about agriculture and the environment. Students apply scientific principles and processes to agricultural materials to make corn plastic, lip balm, ice cream and other products. Chris Aldridge photo The preceding press release was from Manchester resident and Commissioner Richie Farmer and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.
