Moonbow Trail Trek Oct. 27 at Cumberland Falls Commonwealth News Center press release
The 22nd Annual Moonbow Trail Trek, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, offers nature lovers the opportunity to combine a challenging hike with a chance to view some beautiful scenery. Cumberland Falls is called the “Niagara of the South” because of its 125-foot-wide curtain of water. Sometimes at night, when conditions are right, mists from the falls produce a faint rainbow, known as a moonbow. The moonbow may be visible after dark Oct. 27-31. The Moonbow Trail Trek takes hikers during daylight hours to see the falls and other natural formations, including cascading streams, tower cliffs and house-sized rock formations. There is a 7-mile trek for the most adventurous hikers and a 4.5-mile trek for those with less experience. The 7-mile hike departs between 8:30 and 10 a.m. EDT, and the 4.5 mile trek leaves between 10 and 11 a.m. Availability is limited, and participants must preregister by Oct. 25. Participation is limited to the first 100 people to register. Check-in stations will be staffed throughout the hike and sweeps will be conducted to ensure safety. The Moonbow Trail Trek is not recommended for children under 10 years old or solo hikers. The cost is $15 per person and includes a T-shirt. Participants should bring a day pack, hiking boots, extra socks, a flashlight, batteries, rain gear, a first-aid kit, a warm jacket and enough food and water to last six to eight hours. Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin has a lodge, cottages, the Riverview Restaurant, a campground and hiking trails. Lake Cumberland Water Level To Increase 20 Feet This Summer Commonwealth News Center press release
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that it plans to raise the level of Lake Cumberland this summer by 20 feet, a year ahead of schedule as it nears completion of repairs on Wolf Creek Dam. “This is great news for tourists, boaters, fishermen and the marinas and other businesses in the Lake Cumberland area,” said Gov. Steve Beshear. “The early completion of the work at Wolf Creek Dam will help bring back much-needed jobs in this area.” The corps said it planned to raise the level of the lake by about 20 feet this summer to a range of 700-705 feet above sea level, Lt. Col. James A. DeLapp, the Nashville District commander, said in a news release. Before raising the level, a safety team must conduct a review of a new barrier wall that is near completion to ensure it meets safety standards. In 2007, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lowered the level of Lake Cumberland by 40 feet to ease pressure on the structure. The corps said the dam needed repairs because a failure of the nearly mile-long dam would flood communities along the Cumberland River. It has remained at a level of about 680 feet above sea level. The lowering of the water level resulted in fewer visitors to the lake and hurt local marinas and other tourism-related businesses. Even at the lower water level, the lake is the third largest lake in Kentucky. News reports said visitation to the lake dropped by 11 percent from 2006 to 2007. “I think this is the best news we could have received,” said Carolyn Mounce, executive director of the Somerset-Pulaski County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The fishermen are going to be in fishing heaven. It’s going to make fishing on Lake Cumberland a premium.” Gerry Buynak, assistant fisheries director for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, said adding water atop the lake’s overgrown banks will boost fish populations in Lake Cumberland for the next three to five years. “This will result in a ‘new lake’ fish population boom, with very good spawns of fish such as bass and crappie expected,” he said. “This vegetation will also provide cover for young fish so survival should increase resulting in the production of very strong year classes.” Kentucky Fish and Wildlife will stock 150,000 more walleyes and 150,000 more striped bass than normal this year. Altogether, the department will add 1 million walleye and striped bass to the lake this year to give fishing a boost. Buynak said the department also plans to jump-start the trophy trout fishery in the Lake Cumberland tailwater by stocking 10,000 trout larger than 15 inches next winter. “This will bring the fishery back quicker as the abundance of the larger rainbow trout in the tailwater has declined drastically due to poor water conditions,” Buynak said. AmeriCorps Crew Works on Kentucky Trails Commonwealth News Center press release
Nine young people from across the United States are spending several weeks this spring working on trails in eastern Kentucky to help communities and state parks. The AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps team has worked in Letcher County and at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park near Corbin and is scheduled to do more work at Stearns and Natural Bridge State Resort Park at Slade during April and May. The Office of Adventure Tourism applied for the crew to work along the state’s two largest trails – the Sheltowee Trace and the Pine Mountain Trail. Elaine Wilson, director of Adventure Tourism, said the team is helping communities interested in becoming “Trail Towns,” a new program that highlights the outdoor adventure opportunities available in communities across Kentucky. The AmeriCorps team has been welcomed at each work location. The Letcher County Fiscal Court honored each crew member with a proclamation, and guests at the state parks have offered their thanks. “People come up to us and ask us what we’re doing,” team leader Katie Moir said. “They shake our hands and are very thankful for the work we’re doing.” The workers have built bridges, added trail steps and cleared trails. They also learn from experts about trail maintenance and historic preservation. “I think it’s been an amazing experience. It’s something I would not get to do anywhere else,” said Moir, a graduate of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minn. The team members are 18-24 years old and are trained in first aid, CPR, safety and other skills before they start their work. Sponsoring organizations must provide shelter and one meal a day for the crew. Lake Cumberland Is a Great Summer Vacation Spot Commonwealth News Center press release
More boaters, anglers and vacationers are expected to head to Lake Cumberland this summer as the pristine southeastern Kentucky lake’s water level rises about 20 feet following repairs to the dam. Lodging operators are anticipating a strong summer season, said Carolyn Mounce, executive director of the Somerset-Pulaski County Convention and Visitors Bureau. “I bet my hat that we’ll be over 4 million visitors this year,” she said. That figure would approach the record number of visitors reported in 2006, before Lake Cumberland was lowered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during repairs. An abundance of lakes and streams across the Commonwealth makes Kentucky a summer vacation playground. The Bluegrass State boasts more miles of navigable water than any state other than Alaska. Visitors who venture to Lake Cumberland for houseboating, skiing, fishing and relaxing can expect lots of fun this summer. The lake’s half-dozen marinas that rent houseboats, ski boats, water scooters and other water recreation equipment are ready to meet the anticipated increase in demand. Houseboating is one of Lake Cumberland’s biggest claims to fame, with the lake’s many tranquil coves and inlets providing great places to anchor and enjoy the lazy days of summer. The operator of Lake Cumberland’s largest marina said bookings for the luxurious rental craft are up. “We have 60 houseboats for rent,” said Bill Jasper, president of State Dock in Jamestown. “The lake’s coming back. We should have a great year.” Meanwhile, fish should also be biting at the lake known as among the best for anglers in the eastern United States. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is adding 1 million walleye and striped bass to Lake Cumberland’s stock this year to give fishing a boost. Rising water atop the lake’s overgrown banks is expected to spur fish population growth. Spawns of crappie and trout should also be strong. Mounce said boat and vacation shows she’s been attending are abuzz with talk about the resurgent Lake Cumberland. She advises travelers to make motel and other reservations at the lake as early as possible. Lake Cumberland, Kentucky’s deepest and third largest lake in surface area, was lowered 40 feet by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2007 to ease pressure on Wolf Creek Dam and allow repairs. This summer’s level will reach approximately 700 feet above sea level. The normal level of about 720 feet will be achieved by spring 2014, creating a surface area of more than 50,000 acres, according to the Corps. For more information about Lake Cumberland vacation opportunities, visit: www.lakecumberlandtourism.comThe Kentucky Department of Travel and Tourism is an agency within the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, which promotes the Commonwealth as a travel destination. Tourism in Kentucky has an economic impact of $12.2 billion, supports about 174,000 jobs and generates more than $1.2 billion in taxes.
