Lady Bulldogs Finish 2011-12 Ranked Number 25 Union College Press Release
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Union women's basketball team is the 25th-ranked squad according to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Postseason Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Monday. The Lady Bulldogs were 21st in the final regular-season poll, but they fell four spots to land at No. 25 in the postseason rankings. Union received 68 total points, six back of No. 24 Huntington (Ind.). Northwestern (Iowa) is back where it began the 2011-12 season. The Red Raiders, who captured their third-straight national title on March 13, have been rewarded with the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Coaches' Postseason Top 25 Poll. Northwestern received all 12 first-place votes for 312 points in returning to the top spot for the first time since the preseason poll was released on Oct. 24. The Red Raiders, who promoted seven-year assistant Chris Yaw to head coach this season, lost four of their first eight games and fell out of the rankings altogether on Nov. 28. They would then go on to win 24 of their final 27 games, including the 75-62 title game victory over College of the Ozarks (Mo.). The win made Northwestern the first school to win three-consecutive titles in Division II women's history and the first to record five national championships overall in the 21-year history of the championship event. College of the Ozarks, which finished as the national runner up for the fourth time in program history, moves up one spot to No. 2 with 302 points in the postseason poll. Concordia (Neb.), the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular-season and tournament champion, flip-flopped with Ozarks and fell back to No. 3 with 290 points. Indiana Wesleyan, who held at least a share of the No. 1 ranking in 11-straight polls this season, dropped three spots to No. 4 after picking up 284 points. Grand View (Iowa), making its first appearance of the season in the top five, checks in at No. 5 with 260 points. Eastern Oregon made the biggest hike up the rankings in the postseason edition. The Mountaineers vaulted from No. 24 in the final poll to No. 11 this week after pulling off two of the biggest surprises at the National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa. Eastern Oregon upset then-No. 11 Ave Maria (Fla.) in the first round and proceeded to take down then-No. 6 Concordia (Mich.) in the second round before falling to the Ozarks in the quarterfinals. The first-round loss for Ave Maria pushed the Lady Gyrenes all the way down to No. 18, a fall of seven spots. Two newcomers entered the postseason poll in No. 23 Daemen (N.Y.) and No. 24 Huntington (Ind.). Daemen, a No. 7 seed at the national tournament, nearly pulled off an opening round stunner before dropping a 65-60 decision to second-seeded Morningside (Iowa). Huntington, who was an at-large National Championship qualifier, fell to Concordia (Mich.), 69-60, in the first round. Daemen and Huntington replaced St. Thomas (Fla.) (No. 20) and Indiana Southeast (No. 25) in the poll. Twelve of the 14 Division II women's basketball conferences and independents are represented throughout the Top 25. The GPAC, which has led all leagues in Top 25 representation in each poll this season, again placed the most teams of any conference in the rankings with five: Northwestern, Concordia, No. 6 Morningside, No. 8 Briar Cliff (Iowa) and No. 15 Hastings (Neb.). The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and independents. Union posted a 25-8 overall record and went 13-5 in conference play. The Lady Bulldogs won the AAC Tournament and advanced to the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament.

Burton Tabbed Union's New Men's Basketball Head Coach Union College Press Release
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College Interim Director of Athletics Tim Curry announced Tuesday the hiring of Kevin Burton as the 19th head coach of the Bulldog basketball program. "I don't know if there's a more excited guy about getting a coaching job than me," Burton said of joining the Union coaching staff. Burton spent seven seasons as the head men's basketball coach at Lambuth (Tenn.) University before the institution closed due to financial issues. During his tenure with the Eagles, Burton compiled an overall record of 139-75, averaging just fewer than 20 wins per season. "We are real excited about having Kevin join our athletic staff here at Union," said Curry. "Obviously, his success speaks for itself, and I look forward to watch his teams play here at Union." In addition to the impressive win total, Burton's teams amassed a great deal of success at Lambuth. He had a team ranked in the top five of the NAIA Division I Coaches' Poll in three consecutive seasons, had the nation's top scoring team in 2008 (95.2 points per game) and ranked second two other times (92.0 ppg in 2007 and 91.0 ppg in 2010), and made three consecutive trips to the NAIA National Championship Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2006. "I think (the high-scoring offense) was a byproduct of our talent level (at Lambuth)," Burton said. "The most important thing is to have a basketball program that is enjoyable to be around, fun to watch and a real joy to be associated with. And when you put that all together, you're going to have a real opportunity to win on and off the floor. Under his tutelage, Burton had nine players selected as NAIA All-Americans, 17 make the all-conference team and nine earn a spot on the all-academic team. He also coach two conference players of the year, two conference freshmen of the year and the 2007 Basketball Times National Player of the Year. In 2007-08, Burton led Lambuth to the TranSouth Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships as he was named the TranSouth Coach of the Year. "Regardless of how many points we're scoring, I think we will be an enjoyable team to watch and be associated with," Burton said. "The points and the system will work its way out in time." Burton is no stranger to the state of Kentucky. A native of Nicholasville, he graduated from Jessamine County High School before moving on to Asbury College, where he was a captain on its basketball team. In 1999, Burton received his masters from Eastern Kentucky University in sports administration. He became the head men's basketball coach at St. Catharine College in 2000, coaching the then-junior college for four seasons before moving on to Lambuth. Besides returning to the sidelines, Burton is happy to return to an area he has called home for much of his life. "I'm chomping at the bit to roll up the sleeves and get to work and meet everyone I'm going to be working with because I think it's going to be enjoyable and fun," he said. Burton also added, "Always felt fortunate and blessed to be able coach basketball but even more so now given the situation that took place at Lambuth." Burton is single and has a 3-year-old son, Grayson. The Bulldogs went 8-23 overall and 5-11 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference in 2011-12.

Tim Curry, Union College Women's Basketball Coach
Lady Bulldogs Eyeing Another Championship Season Union College Press Release
Fresh off a very successful campaign, the Union women's basketball team is hungry for more in 2012-13. The pieces came together just right for Union in 2011-12 as the Lady Bulldogs went 25-8 overall, won the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament and advanced to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship Tournament for the fourth time in program history. The 25 wins equal the program record, which had been accomplished twice before. The Lady Bulldogs open the 2012-13 campaign Friday and Saturday as they host the Union College Classic. Union will face Pensacola Christian (Fla.) on Friday at 8 p.m. and Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. Union lost a couple of key pieces from last year's championship squad; however, the Lady Bulldogs more than return enough firepower to make another title run. "Our style is not going to change," said Union head coach Tim Curry. "We've got a lot of experience coming back. We've got three starters back, but really we've got four." Topping the list is senior Lindsey Waters, the reigning AAC Player of the Year. She is joined by senior Laura Perkins and junior Alyson Roberts. Waters started all 33 games, while Roberts started 30 of the 31 she played in with Perkins starting 24 of 33 games in 2011-12. Also back is junior Amber Taylor, who started all 11 games she played in before having to miss the second half of the season. Union also returns five others, who will provide some solid depth off the bench. With all this experience back, it lessens the blow of losing three seniors for last year's team, including two four-year starters in Kara Pile and Courtney Thomas. "Losing the three we lost, we lose a lot of experience," said Curry. "So, we have to have a lot of people step up and help fill the void." Pile averaged 11.8 points per game and earned All-AAC Second Team honors, finishing her career with 1,222 points and 436 rebounds. Thomas averaged 5.1 points and 5.3 rebounds last year and graduated seventh on the all-time rebounding list with 583. Kathryn Clark was a solid contributor in 2011-12, appearing in all 33 games and starting five and averaging 3.2 points per game. Union was the second-best scoring team in the AAC last year, averaging 69.3 point per game and had the league's third-best scoring defense, holding opponents to 61.6 points per game. The Lady Bulldogs also led the league at the free-throw line as it made 72.7 percent from the charity stripe. It's no secret a lot of the team's success centers around 6-foot-1 center Waters, who earned NAIA All-American Second Team honors last year. She averaged a double-double with her 20.7 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. In all, she set four school records – most free throws made in a season (191), most rebounds in a season (367), most blocked shots in a season (82) and best blocks per game average in a season (2.48). "Lindsey set the bar high for herself. She's certainly our go-to player; no question about that," Curry said of Waters. "She's, without a doubt, one of the best players in the country." Joining Waters in the starting lineup will be Taylor at the point, Roberts and Perkins as shooting guards, and freshman Haley Perkins as wing/post player. Taylor was having a nice season before having to miss the final22 games. Through 11 contests, she averaged 12.0 points and 4.5 rebounds and dished out 44 assists and had 25 steals. Roberts and Laura Perkins averaged 8.2 and 7.7 points per game, respectively. Roberts led the team with 52 3-pointers made. The duo also combined for 112 assists. Haley Perkins is a 5-foot-10 guard and averaged 12.9 points and 7.4 rebounds last year for Glasgow (Ky.) High School, helping her team win the Region 4 championship and advance to the KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen. Key returners off the bench include Brooke Hill and Marah Rice. Hill earned a spot on the AAC's All-Freshmen Team last season, averaging 5.4 points and 3.3 rebounds. She was second on the team in blocks with 27. Rice, a junior, chipped in 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, really improving her play as the season progressed. Rice came up big in the AAC Tournament championship game as she hit three 3-pointers to keep Union in the game, turning a 26-12 deficit to 31-23 margin at the half. Also back are Kaley Griffin, Jennifer Thomas and Sarah Scruggs. The trio saw regular time off the bench in 2011-12 and combined to average 3.7 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. Including Haley Perkins, the Lady Bulldogs have six freshmen who will be battling for playing time. Helping out on the wing will be 5-foot-8 Macy Clontz, who averaged 13.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last year for South Laurel (Ky.) High School. At the post, Union will have the options of plugging in Lydia Nash and Adreana Jefferson. Nash and Jefferson present Curry with two different styles of play to turn to. Nash, who averaged 12.7 points and 5.6 rebounds for Boone County (Ky.) High School last season, fits the mold of a typical, physical post player. Meanwhile Jefferson is a more athletic, run-the-floor type of player. Jefferson helped Parkview (Ga.) High School to a 30-1 record last year and an appearance in the Elite 8 last year. Also new on the squad are Taylor Wilson and Taylor Atkinson. Wilson helped Bell County (Ky.) High School to a 19-12 record last season, playing in all 31 games. Atkinson, meanwhile, was a key member of the Powell County (Ky.) High School team which went 16-13 overall last year and won the District 56 championship. Winning the AAC will not be an easy task for the Lady Bulldogs, who are picked to finish second in the league behind Tennessee Wesleyan which has won the regular-season crown the past two years. "Women's basketball in the AAC has gotten tougher every single year, especially the last few years," said Curry. "You can be beat at home or on the road in this league." Milligan (Tenn.), Montreat (N.C.) and Virginia Intermont have been tough outs, Curry noted, and Reinhardt (Ga.) has added a new head coach and Bryan (Tenn.) is showing improvement. Last year's push to the finish was anything but easy for Tennessee Wesleyan or Union, which recorded conference marks of 15-3 and 13-5 to place first and second, respectively. Tennessee Wesleyan lost two of its first four conference games and had to climb up the standings the rest of the season. Meanwhile, Union set in the middle of the pack on Feb. 2 with an 8-5 conference record and had to win its final five games to lock up the second seed. "You have to show up and play every night or you're going to lose in this league," Curry said. Outside of the conference, the schedule is not an easy one. Union will face perennial powerhouse and No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan on Nov. 16 at the Grace (Ind.) College Classic. The Lady Bulldogs will also play host Grace, which ranks sixth in a conference where the top five are either ranked or receiving votes, on Nov. 17.

Lady Bulldogs Collect 83-48 AAC Victory Union College Press Release
The 18th-ranked Union women's basketball team pounded the paint and came away with a big 83-48 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Columbia (S.C.) on Saturday. Union scored 68 points in the paint with senior center Lindsey Waters and freshman center Lydia Nash lead the way with 17 points apiece. Waters also grabbed 11 boards for her second double-double in a row and sixth of the season. She also had three blocked shots, extending her streak to a career-best 17 games with at least one block. The Lady Bulldogs controlled the game from the outset, opening up a 24-4 cushion following an Amber Taylor bucket with 10:30 to go in the half. The Fighting Koalas cut the deficit down to 15, but Nash hit back-to-back baskets to end the period to send Union into the locker room up 43-24. The second half was a repeat of the first. Union led by as much as 38 points en route to the 83-48 decision. Union scored 30 points off of Columbia's 31 turnovers and got 43 points from its bench. In fact, Waters was the only member of the starting five to crack double digits. After Waters and Nash, Brooke Hill chipped in 11 points with Marah Rice adding 10. Union narrowly won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Columbia 53-51.
