TheTimesTribune Panthers ready for some pigskin By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
The Knox Central Panthers had high expectations going into the 2011 season, but saw those expectations fall to the wayside after losing to Boyle County, 28-14, during the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. And according to Panther coach Scottie Russell, the loss to the Rebels made his Panther players more determined and focused coming into their workouts before the dead period hit a couple of days ago. Russell has a lot of reasons to be optimistic. He admitted there have been a lot of positives during his team’s recent workouts. Knox Central lost some talent from last season’s 7-4 squad, but returns one of the top players in the state in senior tailback Jeffrey Canady. Canady has given a verbal commitment to play for Eastern Kentucky, but Russell said other schools still have an eye on him. Even with Canady returning to the mix, Russell said his team does have some holes to fill, especially at the quarterback position. thetimestribune.com/sports/x439053565/Panthers-ready-for-some-pigskin

TheTimesTribune Welch’s Cardinals ready to take the next step By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Things are on the rise for Larry Welch and his South Laurel Cardinals. Just two years ago South Laurel was coming off a winless 0-10 season, but they responded by posting a 5-6 record in 2011 which included a trip to the Class 5A playoffs. Many expectations are coming with the improvement and the Cardinals are seeing it firsthand, as many are tagging South Laurel to make a run at the Class 5A, District 7 championship. There is plenty of reason to have excitement this season with quarterback Tyler Dethridge returning along with a lot of weapons on an offense that scored more than 30 points a game during eight of their contests. Dethridge had a breakthrough season in 2011 by connecting on 176-of-326 pass attempts for 2,405 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also had 441 rushing yards and seven scores on the ground. The key to the Cardinals’ success, though, might be on just how much the defensive side of the ball has improved. Even though South Laurel was potent on offense, opposing teams were just as good, scoring more than 30 points per game during eight different occasions, which included a 60-point outburst by Russell County, 46-point outputs by both Clay County and Perry Central and a 41-point effort by Southwestern. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1483808586/Welch-s-Cardinals-ready-to-take-the-next-step

TheTimesTribune Black says Whitley County passing game has improved By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
2011 turned out to be a season the Whitley County Colonel football team wants to forget. After starting the season 0-3 while being outscored 99-13 during the process, Whitley County could never get on track and finished with a 3-8 mark despite making the Class 5A playoffs. It marked the first time Whitley County had a losing record since the 2007 season when the Colonels posted a 2-9 mark. The Colonels finished the 2011 campaign with a five-game losing skid which included their 40-10 loss to Southwestern in the playoffs. But 2012 is bringing hope to Jim Black’s squad and he admitted he liked what he has seen so far during workouts before the dead period hit this past week. Black said sophomore quarterback Austin Ysidro has been looking good behind center along with freshman backup quarterback Luke Woods. Black said he wasn’t displeased with his team’s offensive play last season (Whitley County scored 30 or more points four times during the season), but knew his team needed to improve its passing game to compete for a district championship. The Colonels only passed for 249 yards last season. The running attack should be Whitley County’s strong point again for the upcoming season with senior Boston Bryant returning in the backfield. He rushed for 1,512 yards and finished with 12 rushing touchdowns last season. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1483808592/Black-says-passing-game-has-improved

Hazard Herald Perry Central wide receiver peaks college coaches’ interest by Ira D. Combs, Tri State Sports Media
The interest level from several colleges is picking up for Perry County Central wide receiver/all purpose back Austin Pray. The 6’ 2”, 182 pounder has been invited to several combines and/or worked out for college football coaches during individually arranged workouts at UK, WKU, EKU, Morehead State University, Georgetown College, UPike and University of the Cumberlands so far this summer. Pray has also had interest from from Ball State and Wofford University as well as Cornell, Penn and Harvard from the Ivy League. Having been raised by two parents (Keith and Michelle Pray) who are educators and high school coaches themselves, Austin’s academic record is very much in order with a 4.4 GPA and already having scored a 32 on his ACT. Pray, who also plays basketball and runs track for the Commodores has been a starting WR/DB for three years and has 100 career receptions for over 1,500 yards and 15 TD’s on offense while collecting 138 tackles, 16 passes broken up and five interceptions on defense.

Defense comes to play in the second half
The U.S. Under-19 National Team began its defense of its International Federation of American Football Under-19 World Championship gold medal Saturday night in Austin, Texas, with a 27-6 win over American Samoa. American Samoa had seven offensive possessions in the second half. Those ended in four three-and-outs, a turnover on down, an interception and a fumble. “The defense will never admit it, but they played a helluva game,” Brayden Scott said. “Those guys finished this one off for us.” Three-star defensive end Dajaun Drennon (Slickerville, N.J./Timber Creek) got consistent pressure on the quarterback while Ole Miss commit Herbert Moore (Memphis, Tenn./East) and Kentucky commit Jacob Hyde (Manchester, Ky./Clay County) consistently reestablished the line of scrimmage to allow the linebackers to fill holes and make plays. Justin Bridges-Thompson (Spartanburg, S.C.) was consistently around the football, as was Texas A&M commit Reggie Chevis (Houston, Texas/Sharpstown), who led Team USA with 5.5 tackles. “I think in the first half we were trying to just get adjusted, I know I was,” Drennon said. “I think once we got settled in and got the blood flowing, we were just able to go out and play football.” The Americans next play Austria at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday, July 4. The gold medal game is 8 p.m. CT Saturday, July 7.

The Perry County Central Commodores will be looking to build on last year’s record eight-win regular season and first ever playoff win for the school. Austin Pray, who has gained the attention of several college scouts and coaches, is expected to take over as quarterback this year. Pray amassed some impressive numbers last season as a receiver, and has completed more than 100 receptions for 1,500 yards over his career. The Commodores will be having to replenish their ranks, however, after losing several key players, including one of the state’s top defensive players in Matt Robinson, who will be playing next season alongside several of his teammates at the University of Pikeville, including Jared Deaton, Jay White, Kyle Huff and Bryan Rankin.

TheTimesTribune Panthers ready for run at district title By John Stepp
After finishing the 2011 football season in a three-way tie that gave them the third seed in the district, Scott Russell’s Knox Central Panthers are gearing up for the 2012 season with one focus – leave it all on the field. Russell’s squad came away disappointed after a first-round loss to Boyle County last season, but spirits, and expectations, are high, as the Panthers come off a great off-season in which much of the team is stronger and in better shape than ever before. Despite losing the likes of Jonathan Barger, who leads Knox Central in all major statistical passing categories, and Cody Diamond, who signed to play football at Carson-Newman, Knox Central feels this could be the year they capture their first ever district title. One key to their goal of a championship will be senior running back/linebacker Jeffrey Canady, who is arguably the best player in the mountains, with already scholarship offers from Eastern Kentucky and Wofford. Russell said Canady has grown into a fantastic football player and leader over the past few years. While Canady will be asked to play multiple positions for the Panthers, one position that is up-in-the-air at this point is quarterback. Expected starter Matthew Barger has yet to come out for football this season, and has forced Russell to move senior Devon Evans from wide receiver to under-center. With their first game of the season just over a month away, Russell said his squad looks to be on the right track, but has to continue to keep working hard. thetimestribune.com/sports/x941531745/Leave-it-on-the-field

In his career, he has completed 249 of 485 passes (52 percent) for 4,288 yards and 48 touchdowns with 25 interceptions. Middlesboro Daily News Bobcats gearing up for 2012 season
LOG MOUNTAIN — The Bell County Bobcats have been hard at work over the past two weeks getting ready for the 2012 football season. Wayne Mills is in his second season as the Bobcat football coach after guiding the team to a 11-2 record and the state quarterfinals last year. Mills has high hopes for his Bobcats in 2012. While Bell will have a tough time replacing stand-out running back Cory Davenport and a few good linemen, they lost just seven seniors from last year. Backfield starters Jonathan Polly and Ryan Collett return as seniors and some younger players are ready to step into the spotlight. Bell’s season ended in the quarterfinals with a 26-0 loss to Louisville Central. Mills says that last game has been a motivator for the players this off season. Bell County opens up at Lexington Catholic on Aug. 17. Bell will also be hosting an SEKC Grid-O-Rama on Aug. 10 with the Bobcats scrimmaging Harlan and Middlesboro scrimmaging against Pineville. TheTimesTribune South Laurel captures Union College seven-on-seven title By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
When it comes to success at the seven-on-seven level, go no further than Larry Welch’s South Laurel Cardinals. The Cardinals, who are coming off a playoff appearance in Class 5A last season, captured the Union College seven-on-seven championship by going a perfect 6-0 while going against teams such as Boyle County, Leslie County, Lynn Camp and Pineville. South Laurel will enter the 2012 season with high expectations after recovering from an 0-10 season in 2010 with a 5-6 mark in 2011. Many believe the Cardinals return enough talent to make a run at the Class 5A, District 7 championship this season, which would be their first district title dating back to 1999. One positive Welch admitted he is excited to see out of his team is the improvement on the defensive side of the ball. Everyone knows how talented South Laurel can be on offense (scored 30-plus points in eight games in 2011), but it is the defense (allowed 30-plus points eight games) that is a concern this season. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1236704086/South-Laurel-captures-Union-College-seven-on-seven-title

sentinel-echo.com Detherage poised for big season at South By Mitch Howard, Sports Writer
South Laurel doesn‘t have to look very far to find a former quarterback in the state record book. The names Ricky Bowling and Neil Warren remain high in several categories. Bowling shares the state record with Tim Couch for career touchdown passes with 133. Warren is 14th on that list with 104. Warren also had the fifth best single-season touchdown mark with 56 in 1999. Bowling threw 40 touchdown passes in 2007. Bowling’s 947 career completions are a state record and his 12,575 career yards still rank No. 2 all-time. Warren threw for over 8,000 yards in his career. The Cardinals current quarterback, Tyler Detherage, is earning a lot of attention as he enters his senior year. Detherage is coming off a strong junior season and appears poised for a breakout year. Detherage threw for 2,405 yards as a junior with 30 touchdowns. He also rushed for 441 yards and seven touchdowns. Detherage never got a chance to see Warren play. He did watch Bowling during his South Laurel career, but they never shared a field. Detherage said he didn’t know what to expect when he first stepped under center at South Laurel. He did not have goals of how many touchdowns or yards he would throw. Detherage attended several quarterback camps over the summer and spent a lot of time in the weight room. South Laurel has also been touring the state’s 7-on-7 passing camps, including a win at the Union College camp and runner-up at Lindsey Wilson. When asked about his goals, Detherage still doesn’t talk about flashy individual numbers. His goals are based on what his team can accomplish. The Cardinals are coming off a 5-6 season that saw them make the playoffs. With Detherage and much of the offensive talent returning from a team that averaged 30-plus points per game last season, there are plenty of weapons for a big season. Detherage does plan on playing football in college, but where he ends up will depend on his senior year. Western Kentucky is among the schools watching the South Laurel quarterback to see how he performs. Other schools in the mix include Union, Lindsey Wilson, Kentucky Wesleyan. He has been impressed by Pikeville College and Dudley Hilton. www.sentinel-echo.com/localsports/x1841413609/Detherage-poised-for-big-season-at-South

Clay County will travel to Garrard County Friday August 17 to open the 2012 football season in the Farmer’s National Bank Hall of Fame Bowl.
centralkynews.com Garrard County wants to build on last season's success By HAL MORRIS
Last year was last year for Garrard County. That is the message Garrard coach Mark Scenters wants to get across to the Golden Lions after the best season in school history. Satisfaction and complacency should not be a problem for the Garrard, which returns plenty of experience on both sides of the ball off a squad that went 12-2 and advanced to the Class AAA semifinals for the first time. Scenters knows people will ask how Garrard can make a similar run after some key losses on both sides of the ball. Doubt may be the best motivator for what is a still a veteran Garrard squad, led by quarterback Billy Abney who threw for 2,005 yards and 22 touchdowns with seven interceptions last year and is the top returning rusher with 79 yards. It’s the line that may be the biggest boost for Garrard, as all five senior starters and the top reserve return to an offense that averaged 41 points and 414 yards per game. Left tackle Shae Garcia anchors the line, which includes Dylan Worley, Layne Marsee and Bradley Rector. Dakota Hisle, who started in the playoffs after Rector was injured, also returns. Garrard has about 19 players on the line as compared to 10 or 11 most years. They will be blocking for running backs who had a total of 135 yards last year. But Scenters said this year’s backs are just waiting their turn. Caudill will be the primary ball carrier, but junior Noah Williams and J.T. Lyons could also see a lot of touches to give the offense balance. The biggest question on offense is who Abney is going to throw to. Caudill had seven catches for 88 yards and will catch the ball out of the backfield. Lane Cumby, normally a defensive back, will also move to wide receiver along with Jacob Smith and Jacob Simpson. Scenters said his defense was a bit unsung last season, but the Lions will be depending on the defense more this year. Rector, Worley, Garcia and Ronnie Saylor return along the defensive front. www.centralkynews.com/amnews/sports/highschool/amn-prep-football-garrard-county-wants-to-build-on-last-seasons-success-20120731,0,2935029.story

The Times-Tribune Matthew Barger and 61 others come out for practice at Knox Central By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
With camp beginning today in Artemus for Scott Russell’s Knox Central Panthers, the second-year head coach and former Mr. Football likes what he has seen so far out of his group. A lot of positives have come Knox Central’s way the past few weeks. Matthew Barger has returned to the team and has made the Panthers’ offensive attack even stronger in the process. Russell said he now has 62 players out for the team, which is the largest amount since he came to Knox Central as an assistant coach nine years ago. Russell also said senior tailback Jeffrey Canady is still committed to Eastern Kentucky University, but a lot of Division I schools are still giving a look at him. Russell said he has been pleased with the way practices have been during the summer, but the lack of depth at the skill positions remain a concern. Knox Central will host a pair of scrimmages Thursday with Lynn Camp and Cumberland Gap, Tenn. playing at 6 p.m. while the Panthers and Williamsburg follow. thetimestribune.com/sports/x44824302/Off-to-camp

thespringfieldsun.com Commander football looks to overcome youth in 2012 By Brandon Mattingly
Washington County football is coming off a 5-6 season that saw them eliminated in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs, and with a huge senior class stepping off the field for the final time in that loss to Glasgow, the Commanders are going to have to learn quickly if they’re going to return to the postseason in 2012. What the Commanders do return are playmakers that can make big plays when they get the ball in their hands. Tyler Loving was the team’s leading rusher last season, with 720 yards on 108 carries (6.7 yards per carry) with eight touchdowns. Alex Marshall was one of former quarterback Trae Abell’s favorite targets last year, reeling in 23 catches for 242 yards in eight games. Marshall said he expects to take his game to another level this season as a senior. With seven seniors, 14 juniors, 12 sophomores and 15 freshmen, experience is clearly the top need for Sagrecy’s young team, as Friday night’s scrimmage against North Oldham was the first time many of the Commanders experienced a varsity atmosphere. North Oldham pulled away late in the scrimmage for a 30-6 win. Loving said the offense, spear-headed by Marshall and himself, has a chance to put up quite a few points this year, especially if everyone sticks to their assignments. www.thespringfieldsun.com/content/commander-football-looks-overcome-youth-2012

The Middlesboro Daily News Bobcats look to continue domination
Bell County enters the 2012 season in a familiar position. The Bobcats are the clear favorites in Class 3A’s District 4 as they’ve won 27 straight game against district foes, a streak that dates back to the 2006 playoffs which was also the last time Bell lost to any team from the Mountains. There’s more than just tradition backing up the high expectations for Bell this season. The team features a group of 16 seniors, including 11 that were starters on last year’s 11-2 squad. That experience starts in the offensive backfield where senior Corey Oslonian is back for his second year as the Bobcat quarterback. Oslonian was the model of efficiency last year in completing 41 of 77 passes for 703 yards and 13 touchdowns against just one interception. Also returning as starters in the backfield are senior halfbacks Ryan Collett and Jonathan Polly. Collett ran for 316 yards and five touchdowns in ten games while playing mostly fullback and Polly had 691 yards and seven scores last year. Their one-two punch should ease the loss of Cory Davenport, who finished his senior year with nearly 1800 yards and 28 touchdowns. Taking over at fullback is junior Shane Lawson, who showed he has a little bit of a burst with a long run against Harlan in Friday’s scrimmage. Senior receiver Tyler Green made the most of limited opportunities in 2011, leading the team with 20 receptions for 359 yards and seven TDs. Another senior, Jeffrey Saylor looks to be his primary backup and will also be on the field when the Bobcats go into their spread formations. Senior Brandon Spade and sophomore Dylan Cox will share time at tight end. Two starters return along a senior-dominated offensive line. Hunter Marcum (6-4/270) is back at center and Jonathan Burnett (6-3/230) moves over to left tackle. Senior Tyler Mills (6-1/230) is the left guard with big Tan Hudson (6-6/320) taking over at right tackle. At the right guard position juniors Cody Griffin (6-2/240) and Trevor Swanner (6-0/205) will be splitting time. There is plenty of experience on defensive side of the ball as well. Cox returns at left end with Burnett starting at left tackle and seniors D.J. Warwick and William Elliott at the guard spots. Senior Joe Jackson is the right tackle with Saylor bringing speed and height to the right outside linebacker spot. Polly and senior Corey Lee give the Bobcats a pair of active inside linebackers that can cover a lot of ground. Green returns at right corner with junior Justin Warwick taking over at the left CB and Oslonian is back at safety. Bell’s 2011 season ended in the quarterfinals with a 26-0 loss to Louisville Central. There are plenty of interesting games on the Bobcats’ schedule this year, starting with a showdown against 4A contender Lexington Catholic on Friday in Lexington. Lex-Cath’s 3,000-yard quarterback Kyle Bolin has committed to the University of Louisville and the team will be featured on an ESPNU game the following week. The Bobcats go back to Lexington in week two to take on 6A Bryan Station as part of the iHigh Football Frenzy then play county rival Middlesboro in the City/County Bowl on Aug. 31 in their home opener. The Bobcats also host Whitley County and then start district play after their Sept. 14 open week. Wayne County comes to Bell on Sept. 21 with the Bobcats going to Casey County the following week. Bell hosts rebuilding 5A Clay County on Oct. 5 before completing their district slate at Corbin and at home against McCreary Central. The Bobcats close out the regular season with a big showdown at 5A Harlan County on Oct. 26. The Black Bears are coached by Tom Larkey, who was the Rockcastle County coach in 2006 when the Rockets were the last Mountain team to beat Bell. centralkynews.com Garrard County nips Clay County 15-14
Garrard County coach Mark Scenters was the first to admit it wasn’t the prettiest win he has ever had, but he wasn’t about to give it back. Tied at 0-0 late in the first half, the Golden Lions gave up an 88-yard touchdown run to trail at the intermission before they rallied with a strong second half to hold off Clay County 15-14 Friday night in the season-opening Farmers National Bank Hall of Fame Bowl at Dyehouse Stadium. Both teams struggled offensively throughout the first half. Clay managed to reach paydirt with less than a minute to go in the half when Sam Carr, who led all rushers with 170 yards on 23 attempts, broke free from a tackle at the line of scrimmage and raced 88 yards for the only touchdown of the half to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage. That only seemed to motivate Garrard, though. The Lions, who had only 100 yards offense the entire first half, took over at their own 47-yard line after a Clay turnover on their first possession of the second half and promptly went 53 yards in eight plays and scored when senior quarterback Billy Abney connected with Jacob Simpson for a 10-yard touchdown strike. Garrett Caudill ran for a two-point conversion, and suddenly Garrard had turned the deficit into an 8-6 advantage. The defense didn’t quit all night, either. Despite giving up the 88-yard touchdown to close the half, they limited the Tigers to just 86 yards on 40 offensive plays the rest of the night, including a goal-line stand to stop three straight plays inside the 3-yard line in the fourth quarter. A 36-yard interception return for a touchdown from freshman Slade Crutchfield as the fourth period began and an extra-point kick gave Garrard a 15-6 cushion with 11 minutes, 34 seconds to play in the game. The Garrard offense had problems moving the ball against a Clay defense that included Kentucky recruit Jacob Hyde. Abney was able to complete just seven of 14 pass attempts for 65 yards, but in fairness, he also had a lot of passes dropped by his receivers. Clay had one last rally after recovering a Garrard fumble on a punt at the Garrard 20-yard line. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Holland scored on a 1-yard sneak, then connected with Joey Dezarn for a two-point conversion to pull the Tigers to within one point at 15-14, but they could never get the ball back for one last chance. www.centralkynews.com/amnews/sports/highschool/amn-prep-football-garrard-county-nips-clay-county-1514-20120818,0,7729620.story

Bethlehem 30 Washington County 27
Washington County held a 27-22 lead over Bethlehem with two minutes remaining in Friday night’s football season opener at Bennett R. Lewis Field in Springfield, when Eagles’ junior quarterback Connor Ballard took matters into his own hands. Facing a 4th-and-6 at the Washington County 19-yard-line, the Eagles appeared to have their backs against the wall, before Ballard scrambled to the sideline and drew contact two yards shy of the first-down marker. Ballard went airborne for a 360-degree front-flip, landing on his back for what resulted in a first down by the tip of the football. Ballard eventually finished the drive off with a 3-yard touchdown run, as well as a two-point conversion, to give his team a 30-27 lead. www.kystandard.com/content/football-bethlehem-hangs-beat-washington-co August 31 - Perry Central - HOME (Appalachian Bowl) - 6 PM

Coming into the season, Knox Central was picked by many to make a deep run into the playoffs and after the Panthers’ 40-21 thumping of South Laurel in Friday’s Pioneer Bowl, now you can see why. Scottie Russell’s squad forced the Cardinals’ pass-happy offense into five interceptions during their first five possessions and in return built a commanding 27-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Knox Central outgained South Laurel, 393-198, in total offense, including a 252-86 edge on the ground and cruised to the easy 19-point win. thetimestribune.com/sports/x946183846/As-Good-as-Advertised September 14 - Whitley County - HOME - 7:30 PM

Campbellsville’s Dale Estes knew his season opener as Eagles’ head coach would be a toughie and Russell County posted a 51-0 shellacking in the opening game of the fourth annual Forcht Bank Bowl at Campbellsville University on Friday. Russell County, which lost only two of nine games in 2011 by a total of seven points, needed only 17 seconds to score when Nick Britt went around left end from 65 yards out on the second play from scrimmage. Britt, who was named the Offensive Player of the Game, carried the pigskin only nine times, but had 197 yards and two more scores. www.cknj.com/content/russell-rolls-over-eagles-51-0 October 19 - Rockcastle County - HOME - 7:30 PM

herald-leader.com Canady, Barger and Evans come up big for Knox Central By Mike Fields, Herald-Leader Staff writer
■ Knox Central got big performances from Jeffrey Canady, Matthew Barger and Devon Evans in a 40-21 win over South Laurel last week. Canady ran for 111 yards and two TDs, had 41 yards receiving and returned an interception 48 yards for a TD. Barger had three catches for 96 yards and a TD, and had three interceptions. Evans was 8-for-9 passing for 147 yards and two TDs, ran for 63 yards, and picked off a pass. ■ Perry County Central is looking for a boys' basketball coach. Allan Hatcher stepped down at Perry Central to return to West Virginia, where he began his coaching career. He led Williamson to a state title in 1983. Hatcher took three Kentucky schools to the Sweet Sixteen — Graves County six times, Marshall County four times and Perry Central once. The Williamson, W.Va., newspaper reported that Hatcher might be in line to get the Chapmanville High School coaching job. ■ When G.J. Smith died of a heart attack at age 59 last week, he was most often referred to as a former UK basketball player. But Mr. Smith had his greatest success as a high school basketball player and baseball coach. He led Hazel Green and Laurel County to back-to-back state tournaments in 1970 and '71. He averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds in his senior season. Mr. Smith coached Laurel County and South Laurel baseball for 28 years and had 696 victories. His 1998 team lost to eventual state champ Harrison County in the sectional finals. He was in the inaugural class inducted into the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997. Mr. Smith's humility was his hallmark. ■ The Scholastic Ball Report starts its 10th season on WKYT-TV on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Gary Ball's new co-hosts are Doug Flynn and Leah Pear Kerkhoff. The Times-Tribune Black ready to see Colonel players in action against Russell County By Les Dixon, Sports Editor
Russell County’s Nick Britt poses as a big problem for the Whitley County defense Friday at Colonel Stadium. The senior tailback ran for more than 2,000 yards on the ground last season for the Lakers, which included a 209-yard effort and three touchdowns during their 30-0 win over the Colonels last season. His big-play ability is what concerns Whitley County coach Jim Black the most. Britt’s three touchdowns came from 45 yards, 51 yards and 79 yards during last season’s game. The Colonels are the only team from the Tri-County that didn’t open regular season play in Week Zero, but scrimmaged Pulaski County last week and Johnson Central the week before while leaving Black happy with the way his team has looked during their pre-season battles. Even though his team dropped a 30-0 decision last year to the Lakers, Black said his team played a good game. Whitley County piled up 368 rushing yards against the Lakers with Boston Bryant accounting for 159 of those on 21 carries. thetimestribune.com/sports/x1144052959/Anticipation
