Margaret Thurman
Margaret Thurman wife of “Spider” Thurman died May 9 in Richmond
Margaret Bernice Muncy Thurman passed away May 9, 2014, after a short illness at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Ky. She was born in Ft Knox, Ky., on October 13, 1921, to Larkin Kelly Muncy and Mary Esther Marcum Muncy. Her father was an Army officer, and Margaret enjoyed a happy, event-filled childhood, growing up on Army bases. Upon her father’s retirement, the family relocated to Salem, Indiana, where she graduated from Salem High School. Margaret’s family returned to Manchester, Ky., and prior to her freshman year at Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College (now EKU) in 1938. She was introduced by her aunt to an EKU upperclassman, James Wyatt “Spider” Thurman. Margaret’s aunt asked Spider, the football quarterback, to make sure she was safe at Eastern, and he did. They married in 1942, prior to his deployment in WWII, and spent over 72 years together. Margaret graduated with honors from Eastern with both a B.S. and master’s degrees. She and Spider spent most of their lives in Richmond, and both retired from EKU. Margaret pioneered the medical assisting program at Eastern and served on the first formulating board for state exams. After retirement, she and Spider spent many years earnestly fishing the rivers of Florida. Margaret loved to travel and was on a return-flight from Europe when the 9/11 terror attacks occurred. American airspace was closed to traffic, so she and her aging companions devised a plan for the passengers to return home from Canada. She was a woman of action and resolve, and did not know the meaning of the word “can’t.” Margaret is preceded in death by: both parents and a brother, Larkin Kelly Muncy (Jr). She leaves: her beloved husband, J.W. (Spider); beloved son, Tom (wife, Lorenda) of Richmond, Ky., and beloved son, Scott (wife, Jan) of Cashiers, N.C.; and grandchildren, Mary Margaret Thurman Moreland (husband, Richard) of Richmond, Ky., Laura Thurman Lilly (husband, Rob; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Stephen and Bennett Lilly of Atlanta, Ga.), and Elizabeth Thurman Nealy (husband, Michael; great-grandchildren, Audrey and Aiden of Bowling Green, Ky.) and Christopher Thurman of Richmond, Ky. Funeral services for Margaret Thurman were conducted May 12 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: Hospice Care 350 Isaacs Lane Richmond, KY 40475
