Coaching Church Planters in Minnesota and Wisconsin Minnesota STEVE MELVIN saw the value of church planting at a young age as his parents participated in starting a new church as lay leaders in rural Iowa. As a state director of missions, Steve works with five church planting catalysts to help start new churches in the states of Wisconsin and Minnesota. The two states have a population of 11 million people and only 182 Southern Baptist churches. Your gifts through the Cooperative Program help Steve to encourage, train and coach new church planters as they plant the gospel in two of the least-reached states in North America. Ask God to send more church planters to Minnesota and Wisconsin. The preceding "Missionary Moment" was made possible by gifts to the Southern Baptist Association Cooperative Program, which is supported by several Clay County churches who are members of the Booneville Baptist Association which consists of 25 churches in Clay and Owsley counties which are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Reaching the Unchurched of Detroit Michigan As a church planting catalyst, KEVIN LITCHFIELD discovers and deploys church planters to metro Detroit. He says only 7 percent of the region is considered “churched.” A large number of Muslims live in the region with the suburb of Dearborn alone having more than 45,000. Half the city of Hamtramck comes from Bangladesh and Yemen. The Detroit metro area also has extreme poverty. Your gifts through the Cooperative Program help Kevin encourage and equip church planters whom God has called to this difficult mission field. Pray for the 1.3 million residents of Oakland County. Currently, there are no active church plants in the county. Oppressed in Southeast Asia Southeast Asia When thousands of Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic group, fled Myanmar by sea, they hoped to leave an oppressive homeland. Yet several months later, many Rohingya are still without a home. Although many Southeast Asian countries refused to let passengers disembark, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand have temporarily provided shelter for some of the Rohingya. Almost 1 million Rohingya are often denied food and medical care. Workers SCOTT AND ALYSSA BRANDING*, supported through the Cooperative Program, bring clothing and food to the Rohingya in southern Thailand. The items were purchased with funds from Baptist Global Response. Pray that God uses the Brandings to show His love to the Rohingya so they might trust Him for eternal life. Bible Reference & Statement: Matthew 16:26 The answer to the first question in this Scripture is “nothing.” The answer to the second question can be that the Christian gives whatever he can back to God because God has given him eternal life. We also give to help share the gospel with others. Starting New Churches among Montana’s Ranchers Montana ED SMITH’s assignment is to start new churches in eastern Montana. Though the size of Maine, the region has only 85,000 people. Most of the pastors are bivocational since the churches typically average only 30 to 60 attenders. One significant challenge in starting new churches in the region is finding church planters who have the skills to work on the region’s ranches, which provide most of the jobs. Ed is grateful for your gifts through the Cooperative Program and asks you to pray for God to guide him as he works in these small ranching communities. He also asks you to pray for the pastors who serve the region. Wedding Opens Eyes of Missionary to Needs in the Pacific Northwest Washington ANDY BROWN discovered the need for gospel-preaching churches in metro Seattle when he visited the region in 2012 to perform a wedding. That weekend God began to impress on Andy the need for new churches in western Washington. In January 2013 Andy and his family moved to Bothell, Wash., to start The Landing Church. In January 2015, he started another at Pike Street Market in downtown Seattle. Your gifts given through the Cooperative Program help Andy and his wife, TRANG, serve the people of metro Seattle. Please pray that the Lord would draw people to Himself in the Pacific Northwest using missionaries like Andy. A lifestyle, characterized by good management, is a balanced lifestyle. As Christians, we manage what God provides for us and seek to balance the number of things accumulated and consumed with the amount we give to God and to others.
