Fear 'Les' 13th Region Ratings
Boys Top 5
1. South Laurel (11-1)
The Cardinals captured the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic on Thursday by defeating Archbishop Malloy, 65-53.
The first Litkenhouse Ratings came out this week and the Cardinals are No. 1 in the state with a 101.6 rating. Who follows South Laurel in the 13th Region? Rival North Laurel comes in with a 74.7 mark. That's almost a 27-point differential.
2. North Laurel (6-5)
3. Barbourville (7-2)
4. Corbin (6-4)
5. Clay County (7-3)
What's the scoop: The Tigers posted a 2-1 record in the Berea Tournament this past week and survived a 60-55 contest with Jackson County on Dec. 22.
Surprise, surprise: The Tigers' 75-54 loss to Madison Southern in the Berea Tournament was an eye-catcher to me. North Laurel beat the Eagles by seven points at ‘The Jungle', but then again, it was Madison Southern's second game of the season.
What's ahead: Clay County will travel to Harlan Dec. 5 before hitting the road Jan. 10 to face Powell County - a team the Tigers beat 68-61 in the Berea Tournament.
No. 6 Cawood (5-5)
No. 7 Bell County (8-3)
No. 8 Pineville (7-2)
No. 9 Harlan (5-2)
No. 10 Lynn Camp (7-3)
Girls Top 5
1. Clay County (12-1)
What's the scoop: It's a two-team race in the 13th Region between Clay County and Corbin. The Lady Tigers are on a roll. Clay County went 3-1 in the 5th/3rd Bank Classic last week and captured the Applebee's Winter Classic this past week.
Surprise, surprise: Jayme Gilbert is leading Clay County with a 23-point average and has hit on 104-of-175 shot attempts this season. She has also connected on 79-of-104 shot attempts from the free throw line. Paige Jackson has hit on 38-of-72 shot attempts.
What's ahead: The Lady Tigers will travel to Wayne County on Jan. 6.
2. Corbin (10-1)
What's ahead: The Lady Redhounds will have an important district game with Whitley County on Jan. 6.
3. Bell County (10-3)
4. Middlesboro (8-5)
5. Whitley County (7-3)
No. 6 Knox Central (9-2)
No. 7 North Laurel (6-6)
No. 8 South Laurel (5-4)
