DEC. 9, 1989: KANSAS 150, KENTUCKY 95

Pitino lost his coolers after Jayhawks lived 'stat dream'

The Wildcats endured a 150-95 beating, the second largest margin of defeat in UK's proud history. Only an 87-17 loss to Central on Jan. 28, 1910, has been worse. Kentucky plays at Kansas on Saturday for the first time since that 55-point loss on Dec. 9, 1989. For those who were there, the memories are fresh.
"The worst beating I ever had in my life -- college, high school, middle school, elementary school, bar none," Richie Farmer said.
Farmer, then the darling of UK fans as a homegrown basketball icon and now Kentucky's commissioner of agriculture, still finds the loss difficult to swallow. Kentucky was five games into Pitino's rebuilding effort. The Cats had eight scholarship players, none taller than 6-foot-7. Kansas ranked No. 2 in the country.
"I just never understood why he had to beat us that way," Farmer said of then-Kansas Coach Roy Williams. "A 50-point lead with two minutes to go, I think it's pretty secure."
Farmer recalled being on the floor beside seldom-used Johnathon Davis and three walk-ons with the Jayhawks' starters still in the game deep in the second half.
"I always wanted to sit down and ask him about that," he said.
Kentucky took revenge by beating Kansas 88-71 in Rupp Arena the following year. Then UK terminated the series which had given college basketball 18 games in the previous 21 seasons.
