By JOHN HENSON, Managing Editor (Harlan Daily)
Three quarters were left to play, but there was little doubt that the game was over when Oneida Baptist closed the first period Monday with an 11-0 run against Evarts in the opening round of the 13th Region All A Classic. Oneida Baptist led 15-11 with two minutes left when the Mountaineers’ pressure sparked the decisive surge. Amos Nabge scored off a drive, and Josh Messmer followed with a putback basket. Nagbe scored twice more off steals seconds apart before Chris Cahill’s 3-pointer pushed the lead to 26-11, sending the Mountaineers to an 89-70 victory and into a quarterfinal matchup against Pineville.
Oneida Baptist’s press forced Evarts into 10 turnovers in the first quarter, resulting in numerous easy shots as evidenced by the Mountaineers’ 60 percent (12 of 20) shooting in the period. Cahill, a senior guard, poured in 32 points to lead Oneida Baptist (5-10), hitting 12 of 21 shots from the field. Tyler Hixson came off the bench to add 11 points. The duo combined for five 3-pointers.
Oneida Baptist stretched its lead to 33 points in the third quarter as senior forward Chris Love hit all three of his shots in the period, but Evarts continued to battle. Senior forward Jamie Combs had three baskets in the quarter as the Wildcats cut the deficit to 70-43 heading into the final period. The OBI lead again reached 30 midway through the fourth quarter, but Evarts didn’t quit and outscored the Mountaineers 27-19 in the period. Evarts turned up its pressure in the second half, forcing OBI into 11 turnovers in the fourth quarter. The pace of the game grew faster as the night progressed, leading to an extremely ragged second half that featured numerous turnovers and rushed shots.
