Jags comeback fails at Clay Co., 66-63
By Denis House, Sports Editor (The Sentiel-Echo)
MANCHESTER-With eight seconds left in last Friday night's game between Clay County and North Laurel, the Jaguars had the ball, trailing 66-63 with a chance to tie the game and send it into overtime.
But the Jags never had a chance to get that shot off, much to the chagrin of Coach Jim Conway, as Clay picked off a pass and ran out the clock for the three-point win. The loss wasted a 28 point effort by senior guard Shanade Allen, and also dropped the Jaguars to 9-7 on the season with a tough game against No. 1 Scott Co. this Thursday night in Georgetown.
Midway through the third quarter, Clay (13-3) held a 20-point lead, as North struggled throughout the second and third quarters. Clay's Desmond Swafford and Will Jones combined to score 21 points in the third for the Tigers.
North slowly began to chip away at the Clay lead in the fourth quarter, with Allen leading the way, scoring five straight points. The shooting of Allen, along with Billy Carson, helped North get back in the game, cutting the Clay lead to 61-57 late.
After a free throw by Clay's Justin Hobbs, North's Anthony Trabish and Justin Howard scored big baskets, cutting the margin to one at 62-61. Clay then scored two quick baskets with less than a minute left to push the lead to 66-61. After cutting the lead to 66-63, North had one more chance, but unable to get off a shot, the Jaguars fell.
North held a 16-10 lead after one, but trailed 28-25 at the half. A 25-11 fourth quarter helped the Jaguars get back into the game.
North Laurel (63)-Allen 28, Carson 11, Howard 10, Trabish 6, Asher 5, Smith 3.
Clay Co. (66)-Swafford 26, W. Jones 16, D. Sizemore 11, Hibbard 6, R. Smith 5, Mathis 2.
