South Laurel girls, Corbin boys claim victories in 50th
The South Laurel Lady Cardinals are making themselves right at home in their new surroundings. In their first year in the 13th Region, the Lady Cardinals advanced to the regional tournament with a 65-56 victory over Whitley County.
The Corbin Redhounds also advanced to the championship game on the boys side, routing Whitley County 67-40. A wreck on Interstate 75 kept the Whitley County bus from arriving on time, delaying the start of the game for about an hour. The Colonels finished the season 5-21. Corbin (17-9) will face defending state champion South Laurel in the district title game.
51st District
Tournament host Pineville was upset by Lynn Camp 52-50 in the first round of the 51st District Tournament. The Tigers will advance to the regional tournament for just the third time in school history and the first since 1962.
49th District
Billy Carson scored 21 points and Justin Howard added 15 as North Laurel rallied to defeat Red Bird 69-54 in the first round of the 49th District Tournament. The Cardinals stayed in front for most of the first three quarters before being outscored 24-8 in the final period.
Derek Davis and C.R. Berry led Red Bird (12-14) with 18 and 13 points, respectively.
The North Laurel Lady Jaguars also advanced to the championship round with a 62-28 victory over Red Bird. North Laurel (13-15) raced to a 19-6 lead after one period and never looked back, leading by double figures the rest of the way. Caitie Jackson led the Lady Jags with 20 points. Red Bird (4-18) was led by Nicole Mills and Kelsey Dickerson with seven points apiece.
