Lady Cats snap losing streakBy JAY COMPTON/Sports EditorThe Bell County snapped a four-game losing streak by avenging an earlier loss to Clay County. The Lady Cats were 11-5 before blowing a late lead and losing 7-6 at Clay on April 18. Including that loss, they had gone 3-11 since then, before Tuesday's game. Bell jumped on Lady Tiger starter Jayme Gilbert early as they put up three runs in the first inning. The Lady Cats added to their lead in the third inning. Those runs proved to be decisive as Clay got two in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4. Gilbert took the loss for Clay. She pitched six innings and gave up six hits, had one strikeout and didn't walk a batter. "We spent a lot of time working on our hitting before the game," Brock said. "Gilbert's a pretty good pitcher and we only struck out once. We also hit some balls pretty good against her." CC 000 220 0 - 4 11 3 BC 302 000 x - 5 6 1 Gilbert and Fisher; Taylor and Dixon. North captures district crownBy Dennis A. Borden, Staff WriterThe North Laurel Lady Jaguar juggernaut continues to roll. The Lady Jaguars shut out Clay County 9-0 to easily win the 49th District championship game on Monday. North Laurel won its 30th game of the season behind pitcher Abby Sears, who had a career-high 19 strikeouts against the Lady Tigers. Each team went down in order in the first inning, but the Lady Jaguars took a 2-0 lead in the second. Brittany Lawson singled to center field and managed to come all the way home when the ball got away from the center fielder to give North Laurel a 1-0 lead. An infield hit by Chandler Costello, a stolen base and a passed ball produced the second run with Costello crossing the plate. The Lady Jaguars rallied again in the third inning on an opening walk to Chelsea Blanton. After Blanton stole second and third, Heather Collins singled her home to make it 3-0. Collins reached third base on an outfield error and scored the fourth run on a passed ball. Chelsea House tripled, but was thrown out at the plate on the next play when Sears grounded back to the pitcher. Lawson drove in the fifth run with a single to left field to give North Laurel a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Lady Jaguars added a pair of runs in each of the last two innings to top off the victory in convincing fashion. Clay County broke up a Sears' no-hitter in the seventh inning when Chastity Lewis hit a line drive down the right field line for a single. Sears retired the last two batters on strikeouts to end the game. The region draw will not be held until 10 a.m. on Saturday at Corbin High School which will determine the times for each regional game. Read the entire article at....
