Joyce Marion Obitlegacy.com/ClearLakeObserverOn May 3, 1933, in the Cotton Hollow of Clay County, Manchester, Kentucky, a fifth child was born to Roy and Ethel Cotton. It was a girl that they named Marion. After absorbing plenty of Cotton Hollow and Clay County culture, Marion moved to Dayton, Ohio as a teenager to live with relatives. After finishing her schooling she was employed by a host of varied and sundry employers until she acquired a job at Wright-Patterson Aircraft as a Technical Aircraft Parts Librarian. After a failed marriage to Johnny Griffin she accepted a Technical Librarian position for Butler Publications in Hawthorne, California. In 1967, she married James Joyce. They lived in Altadena and Pasadena until James' retirement in 1980. They then moved to Lake County, California where they learned to raise bountiful vegetables and flowers. A neighbor introduced Marion to ceramics, a hobby in which she became very adroit, creating many personalized gifts for friends and relatives. In 1988 James and Marion moved to Kelseyville, California but, worsening arthritis produced a crippling affect in Marion's hands that reduced her control and sensitivity. However, Marion's creative mind would not let her stop producing, and she became famous for her lip smacking rum cakes. Once they were tasted you would only want more. During one Christmas season she baked and sent out more than 30 rum cakes. As time took its toll and her physical maladies continued, she reluctantly cut her output to about 10 cakes for just a few chosen few. Marion passed away on August 30, 2008 at the age of 75. Left to morn her passing were James, her husband of 42 years and 3 step-children: Lauren Preston, her son Jeffery and his daughters Damaris and Jahanya; Paula Schraven, her son Brandon, daughters Kim Dutro and Kelly Newquist, and Kelly's children, sons Emerson and Daishel, and daughter Averie; Terence Joyce and his daughter Diantha and son Isaac. Also missing her are many nieces and nephews along with a host of neighbors and friends. Services will be held Monday, September 15th, 1 p.m. at Chapel of the Lakes.
